A MAN tried to steal a car that he saw advertised on the Auto Trader website.

The offence took place at the Wellington Arms Hotel, off the A33, between 7.30pm and 8pm on Tuesday, December 4.

The man, who called himself Stephen, came to a house in Fair Oak Lane, Stratfield Saye, by appointment to view and test drive the BMW 1 series car.

He asked to take the car somewhere well lit so he could check the bodywork, so the car owner drove it to the car park of the Wellington Arms Hotel.

As the pair swapped seats, the man tried to steal the car, but the owner managed to get back in and stop him. After a small scuffle, the man ran off.

Officers have now released an efit image of the suspect.

He is described as of mixed race, aged in his mid 20s, and had a scar on the left side of his forehead. He wore black rectangular glasses, a long beige sheepskin coat, navy straight-cut jeans and plimsoll-style trainers which were blue and red.

PC Lee Stanbrook said: “I would like to hear from anyone who recognises this man or who saw anything suspicious at the Wellington Arms Hotel. It is believed he may be from the London area.”

Anyone with information can contact PC Stanbrook at Basingstoke police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
