Fans urge Adkins to bolster Saints' backline
8:00am Tuesday 18th December 2012 in Sport
Saints fans have overwhelmingly backed their club to sign a new centre half during the January transfer window.
A poll which attracted over 2,000 votes on dailyecho.co.uk found that 73 per cent of all those taking part targeted a new central defender as the club’s top priority when the window reopens two weeks today.
Saints endured a torrid start to the season defensively as they couldn’t stop shipping goals with a back four that was changing on a regular basis.
They have found more stability and solidity in recent weeks, which has seen a marked improvement in form and a rise up the table.
But Saints fans still remain concerned that for a side that has had few problems scoring goals, conceding them is still the major barrier to staying in the Premier League.
Nigel Adkins may well target more than one central defender given the lack of cover at the club in that role.
The current first team pairing of Jose Fonte and Maya Yoshida are only backed up by Jos Hooiveld.
l From back page The other senior centre halves on the club’s books, Aaron Martin and Dan Seaborne, are so far down the pecking order they are out on loan at Crystal Palace and Charlton respectively.
For so many fans to agree on one specific area to be strengthened is a rare thing and shows their concern over that role.
As well as the huge majority for a centre half some 15 per cent were keen to see Saints land a new goalkeeper.
Adkins has struggled to decide who is his number one this season, chopping and changing between Kelvin Davis, Paulo Gazzaniga and Artur Boruc.
Whether the club would seriously consider bringing in a fourth senior keeper is a point of debate as that is a lot for any side to carry, especially one who only have the league and FA Cup to worry about.
Also to be taken into consideration is the length of contract you may have to offer. If you wish to get a senior and experienced top level keeper the chances of them being happy to uproot and move for a deal to the end of the season are slim.
Only six per cent of voters were keen to see the full back positions strengthened in the window.
That figure may had been higher a couple of months ago but with the emergence of Luke Shaw in the left back role, and with Nathaniel Clyne continuing to perform well on the other side, the urgency has dissipated somewhat.
Saints though may well still reflect they need cover.
Just five per cent of the vote was for midfield/wingers.
It is one area of the Saints squad that is very well stocked for players.
There is no need for any cover to add depth to the squad, the only argument would be for better players than are already at the club to be purchased to come straight into the first team.
With goals not an issue the smallest vote was for strikers.
Only two per cent of fans felt that area needed strengthening.
Saints are only playing with one out and out striker in their current formation.
That man has been Rickie Lambert but with Jay Rodriguez, Emmanuel Mayuka, Tadanari Lee and Guly do Prado all in the squad and with experience in that position Saints do seem to have options and depth to rely on.

I suppose we should cherish it. In 30 years time when Portsmouth Football Club is a distant memory and all the children of that fair city grow up supporting Saints and wearing red and white we'll probably romanticise about the time when we had a local rival and "banter" existed. We won't remember that they were rubbish at it, but we'll smile and think "bless" because they had a go.

But back to the real reason why we post our thoughts, the defence does need some fresh blood, someone with a bit of pace and aerial ability. Not sure where to look, but i am sure we will find one, maybe not Scott Dan or Curtis Davies, they don't have a great track record when it comes to demotions! An experienced left back, someone who Shaw can look up to and learn his trade from. The goalkeeping situation is a bit of a farce, who gave the decision to sign Boruc, he was overweight, and had the biggest chip on his shoulder i have ever seen! if we could mould all 3 together, that would make a great keeper!
What we want and what we get are always different, but a few surprises are always up NC's sleeve, so fingers crossed and lets get another 3 points against sunderland.

For a start, I find it unacceptable that such an idolised figure for children smokes a pipe, is grossly overweight and wears liberal quantities animal fur. It's also clear that he is employing countless elves, without union representation, in unregulated sweat shop conditions.
It's obvious also that no VAT or NI revenue at all is being contributed from this obese slave driver's vast enterprise which is deliberately located in a tax haven.
Furthermore, isn't it time this fat tax dodger was properly checked and authorised to enter children's bedrooms?
And finally, the fact that this worshipped role model, marketing globally, is white, male and heterosexual merits serious debate.

It's all very well being PC, but when it comes to the French and strikes, I say, s0d 'em!
Mind you, Gérard Depardieu, who has put on huge amounts of weight and, for tax purposes, just moved to Belgium, could pass as Santa if you gave him a beard. So maybe the answer is to move the Capital of Christmas to Ghent, Liege or Brussels and be done with it.

Can't believe you haven't voted much for a keeper. All the best sides have a good one, even your best old sides; Shilton, Flowers, Niemi.
Playing 3 keepers regularly in a season could prove costly.
If Mr positive isn't going to play Boruc, then replace him with Friedel or someone else, and you will have a good young'n, a loyal keeper, and a class keeper. Easy.
Looks like Ramirez might need replacing as well though. Diddums. Fair play to Adkins he has improved the defence, but cover is a good idea.

Well I don't know whether he is or not but I haven't heard anything to make me think otherwise except for that italian interview a few weeks back.
I see it's Hartlepool away for you lot this weekend now thats a bigger 6 pointer than us and the Mackems as your both in the bottom four. Will be interesting to see how many of the worlds greatest away support are up there this weekend as our awful support managed to fill the away end twice in two midweek trips. I must say the first was one of my favourite away trips whilst in league 1.
I'm pleased that you would love us to win a cup something we both have in common

I don't think Sunderland will be as easy a game as you think. I have Mingolet and Lambert in my fantasy team, so a difficult one that.

In answer to your question about Matt LeTiss' England caps yesterday. Venables tried to tempt Matty away to Spurs and was spitting blood when he refused the offer, consequently when TV moved to become the England manager, Matty was never going to figure in the equation.
Matty was without doubt a much better player than Gazza (I don't know why you would question this as a football fan) and even Platini said he was one of the most gifted players he'd ever seen. If you can, find a dvd or video called 'Unbelievable' which features countless MLT goals. I know you are a skate but I kid you not, as a football fan you will find it breathtaking. The man was truly gifted and most involved in football knew it.

Redknapp would never have gone there unless he was guaranteed a January purse. They are already unbeaten in four, have a tough two months coming up, but cucially have lots of home games. They are an experienced side. I think Reading are already down. My guess is that he will buy a couple of players from the same club like he did with Pompey from Spurs with Mendez et al.

With regards to the story...it's no secret that we need bolstering in defence...I've not a clue who would be a target, but I'd imagine NA has. A cool calculated value-for-money couple of purchases would suit me fine.

So not many posts about the article then?
didn't read anything about Portsmouth in the article so why are the posts just slagging matches between Portsmouth & us?
Surely all Saints Fans know where we need to strengthen so come on put forward some ideas about who you'd like to see us buy.
We don't need to squabble with Pompey fans just sit back & see where the Saints are & where Pompey are & enough's said.
