Motorists are being warned again about the dangers of leaving their engines running and cars unattended while their vehicle heats up.

Inspector Alan Rhees-Cooper (right), of Queensbury Neighbourhood Policing Team, said yesterday: “Locking the vehicle does not prevent the vehicle being stolen. The thief will just smash a small window, reach in, unlock your door and drive away.

“Nearly all insurance companies will not cover you if your key is in the vehicle. If it is stolen, they will not pay out. If you leave your keys in your car whether it is on the road or on your drive, there is a high likelihood it will be stolen and your insurance company will not pay out.”
