A YORK-based charity has celebrated raising more than £100,000 in its silver jubilee year.

York Against Cancer was launched in 1987 to help residents living with cancer, and this year held a number of special events including a ball at the National Railway Museum, an eight-man cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End, a London shopping train, a penalty shoot-out competition with York City Football Club and local primary schools and a recent panto night at the Theatre Royal.

A spokeswoman said: “York Against Cancer want to sincerely thank everyone for their support this year.

“A special effort was made to raise as much money for the charity’s work as possible and the final total has surpassed all expectations.”

The charity’s final event for 2012 will be a special Pickering to Whitby trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on Sunday, December 30.
