Southampton starlet Luke Shaw has to wait until he turns 18 for improved contract

Daily Echo: Luke Shaw Luke Shaw

Saints are not expected to offer starlet Luke Shaw a new contract until next summer – even though the 17-year-old could be the subject of intense transfer window speculation.

The club have decided that big contracts shouldn’t be handed out until a player turns 18 – that birthday marking the first occasion you can sign for up to five years.

England youth international Shaw, a revelation at left back in recent weeks, does not turn 18 until next July.

Saints are not believed to have opened talks with Shaw’s representatives regarding a new, lucrative deal for a player who due to his age will be among the lowest earners in the entire top flight.

There is expected to be interest from some of England’s biggest and wealthiest clubs in Shaw when the transfer window opens at the start of next month.

Arsenal are heavily tipped with a January move, while Chelsea have had the coveted youngster heavily scouted.

The west London club are believed to be considering a bid, having previously attempted to lure him away from St Mary’s, while Manchester City could also get involved.

Saints are keen not to sell and, crucially, any decision remains theirs. Shaw, for his part, is currently happy at St Mary’s.

But while Saints fully intend to discuss a new and improved contract with Shaw, right now they are reticent to offer an extended deal, with negotiations remaining unopened.

Shaw is understood to be earning a very modest salary, having initially signed a regular first-year pro deal that kicked in when he turned 17.

Those contracts are usually designed for players who are still finding their feet in the development sides, and maybe getting the odd cup appearance.

But Shaw, whose current deal runs until 2015, has become a Premier League regular.

Saints recently followed through on their policy not to award big contracts until a player turns 18 with midfielder James Ward-Prowse, who signed a five-year deal in November a few weeks after reaching that age.

However, the difference between Shaw and Ward-Prowse is that the former is now a first team regular and, injury and form permitting, is likely to play every match for the remainder of the campaign.

As such, to earn in a month what some of his colleagues will earn in just a matter of days means the club must work to keep him happy with other far more wealthier clubs circling and sure to be prepared to offer big wages.

Shaw has been well-known to the country’s elite clubs for a number of years, with interest first emerging in him long before he was near the Saints first team.

His performances since breaking into the side this season have only strengthened opinions that he will eventually develop into one of, if not the, best left-back in England.

With Shaw’s value only likely to rise, his suitors will be keen on doing a deal for him as soon as possible.

But when recently asked about Shaw, Adkins confirmed: “He is still under 18 and when he gets to that (age) we'll go down the same lines we’ve gone and done with James Ward-Prowse.”

I'm pretty sure he doesn't have to busk for spare change at the Bargate. I reckon he's probably gets some pretty generous appearance-related bonuses.

I think we do right by our kids, and until he's 18 all he needs to worry about is his football, not boring stuff that involves numbers and lawyers and heavy sh1t like that.

This has got Chamberlain written all over it!! The Echo will bang on about this for weeks!! Why would he want to go anywhere, he’s now a regular starter for a Premier League team and he’s still developing. I think Shaw is a great talent but for me, Clyne has looked better this season. Saying that, how good will these two be in years to come.

Because the way the media works is to think "Oh, Ashley Cole's leaving. Who's an up and coming left back? Um, that Southampton lad? Yes, that means they're definitely after him."

It's harmless fun, though. I wouldn't credit the Echo with the ability to actually influence whether players stay or go (I don't think they were even 1% of the reason AOC left) but it does shift papers if you worry the readers a little bit. Just take it with a pinch of salt is my advice.

Well there’s a bloke in my office that does a man-sized one of those at 10 o’clock every day without fail and renders not just the toilets but also the surrounding area completely unusable for at least an hour. And, yet, his contributions to my mornings are more erudite, witty and generally welcome than anything I’ve ever read from one of the blueshite who posts on here.

This time around I would quite like to see Saints hanging onto some of these quality players rather than letting them go to clubs with more money.

It's about time we got rid of that selling philosophy and concentrated on building a squad to take on the higher echelons of the Premier League.
I would only sell players who aren't getting regular first team starts and buy in a couple of defenders in January
Keep hold of Shaw - If he continues to develop he's going to be much more valuable and he will earn more if he decides to move later on

He didn't make his mark when he played in England before and knocking in goals for Celtic is a doddle, Sutton even managed it a few years back, i'd let him go to Liverpool, as I don't see him being any better than Rodriguez, who it seems is the natural under-study to Lambert.
Don't understand why there is an apparent need for a new striker. We have plenty in the squad plus Sharp on loan. All this talk of Hooper makes me wonder who is on the way out. Think Sharp is miles better than Hooper, the difference is Sharp has not had the chance to play at a higher level. so Hooper is a puzzle to me. If you compare the 2 strikers they both played for Scunthorpe under Adkins, Sharp was far better than Hooper in the same team and same league, under the same management. The only difference is Sharp signed for his boyhood club Sheff utd, who had him sat on the bench. Whereas Hooper signed for Celtic. So no brainer, we need a Striker that bad, get Sharp back instead of spending loads of money on Hooper.

Enjoy the comments, I'll be serious on this, I was at St Marys for the Reading game and was very impressed with Shaw, he's intelligent, strong, brave, quick and a natural, hopefully because Saints are a Premier Team who are ambitious and improving he'll want to be part of this, it seems Nigel is gifted with getting the Players minds the same as his, every interview with any of the Players, they all sing from Nigels hymn sheet, Clyne and Puncheon compliment each other and it's a different Team to when I saw them against Man City, Saints need to prove they are difficult to beat home and away and climb up the League, the Fans will be happy and the Players will have trust and show loyalty that is so lacking in todays top Football

Well there’s a bloke in my office that does a man-sized one of those at 10 o’clock every day without fail and renders not just the toilets but also the surrounding area completely unusable for at least an hour. People literally cry if they go near it. And, yet, his contributions to my mornings are more erudite, witty and generally welcome than anything I’ve ever read from one of the blueshite who posts on here.
That's interesting.

Everyone knows that sh!te smells because it contains indoles, mercaptans and hydorgen sulphide gas.

It is less widely known, however, that one of the more pongy indoles is called a skatole(really - no joke).

I do not know if the skates were named after skatoles or vice versa,

Almost 75% of your colleagues' turds are water and almost all the rest is dead bacteria and
indegestible fibre. This shows that you only need a very small amount of skatoles to create an unbearable hum.

I suggest you ask him to try cutting out fizzy drinks. Floating turds exposed to the air pong the most. They float because they contain more gas than sinkers. Thus with less gas the offending skatoles go straight to the bottom of the pan.

Anyone intersted in knowing more can buy my one of my two popular books available on Amazon ie "1000 Things You Didn't Know About Turds" and "Wwwwhhhhhooooaaah! - You Fat Skatole!"

Everyone keeps churning out that "Rodriguez natural successor to Lambert" quote. I think even I have found myself saying it after a few beers.
But it is rubbish.

They are nothing alike, play a completely different style of play and have very different strengths.
We really do have no other natural goal scorer than Rickie.

And everyone reciting about bringing Sharpe back is ignoring the evidence. He's scored 5 goals for Forest. That is hardly the sort of form that I would expect of a player that should be at Saints after almost half a season.
Despite the fact that we probably owe him for getting us promoted, he is not good enough for the EPL.

I haven't seen enough of Hooper to compare and I doubt many the people posting on here honestly have either?

But we need another goal scorer. Because if Rickie was out for a long time, I wouldn't be confident that we have enough options in our team to keep the goals flowing.

Rodriguez has looked lost up front on his own, Mayuka is untried, but is likely to playing attacking midfield.

Apart from some of our great young players on their way through... who can we play up front???

Lee, mayuka, Rodriguez, Guly, Ramirez and Lallana can play upfront. We don't need any more strikers, because I don't know if you've noticed but we only play one striker anyway and we're scoring goals for fun.

I suggest you ask him to try cutting out fizzy drinks. Floating turds exposed to the air pong the most. They float because they contain more gas than sinkers. Thus with less gas the offending skatoles go straight to the bottom of the pan.

"tangohead and knobhead" are apparently OK if used by scrotum, but you don't have to use bad language to be offensive, as dummynonce is quite adept at doing.

He didn't make his mark when he played in England before and knocking in goals for Celtic is a doddle, Sutton even managed it a few years back, i'd let him go to Liverpool, as I don't see him being any better than Rodriguez, who it seems is the natural under-study to Lambert.

Apart from some of our great young players on their way through... who can we play up front???
most boring post of the day....
I have seen both Sharp and Hooper at there time at Scunthorpe, and spoke to both of them on many occasions. That's why i was trying to sum both players up. As for Sharp and Forest, if you watch the highlights and read the match reports, Sharp is not getting the service he normally get's. There passing style centers around there other strikers, There's been alot of times where Sharp has been in perfect position to score, yet they ignore him. Something Forest needs to work on.

Been from Scunthorpe ( but no longer living there ), i have watched both players in there ' prime '. and Sharp wins hands down. Keegan goes back to Scunny to watch them play, and was keen on Sharp even to the point that he recommended him to alot of the prem clubs including Liverpool. Just a shame he signed for sheff utd, cause they really messed up his career.

You know when babies do those really sour poos that smell like milk that’s been left in the airing cupboard for three weeks and then had a bit of sulphuric acid added for the lols?

That's my "fact of the day" sorted! 0:)

Well there’s a bloke in my office that does a man-sized one of those at 10 o’clock every day without fail and renders not just the toilets but also the surrounding area completely unusable for at least an hour. People literally cry if they go near it. And, yet, his contributions to my mornings are more erudite, witty and generally welcome than anything I’ve ever read from one of the blueshite who posts on here.[/p]
That's interesting. Everyone knows that sh!te smells because it contains indoles, mercaptans and hydorgen sulphide gas. It is less widely known, however, that one of the more pongy indoles is called a skatole(really - no joke). I do not know if the skates were named after skatoles or vice versa, Almost 75% of your colleagues' turds are water and almost all the rest is dead bacteria and indegestible fibre. - You Fat Skatole!"[/p]
That's my "fact of the day" sorted! 0:) Merry Christmas Saints! think you're right about cortese, It was him that wanted the future first team to contain more academy lads.so saving a fortune in transfer fees ect....... so I would think that any of those that do get into the first team squad will get long term deals. the future for us looks petty good...
thing is NC gets loads of abuse on here for the way he conducts business at sms, but the abuse normally comes from a few posters. clyne was a bargin and should go on to play for england as should shaw, if we get an england manager who can look past the big teams and spot talent at any club. shaw will get a good contract offer, and hopefully he will sign and not think that going to a so called `big team` would be better for him. NC and NA are creating a quality squad at saints, a squad that with a little bit of tinkering could be good enough to push for the europa league next season, we can but hope!

can't disagree with any of that,I honestly think we're only two or three players away from being a good side.whether we can get them in next month is a big ask,but I truly believe we have the right people, doing the right things for the future of this club...
we will succeed eventually I'm certain.

I agree with you both. The way the team is shaping up it seems that with NCs investment background, he wants a young promising team that will either earn us more by being successful, or earn us more by selling them onto to richer clubs.. In the longer term.
yeah, your right about the selling on bit.
sell some and integrate some into the first team.but I think that is as you say, more of a long term strategy.short term we need to try to stay in this league, and that might mean some more spending.
....but it's good being a saint aint it..........

yeah, again I agree.I like the way we're being seen as a club that gives youngsters a chance. as It only enhances our chances if we're trying to bid for some younger talent as they can see whats happening here.not only that but the academy players will take heart from the fact that adkins aint frightened to put the younger players in.gives them something to strive for,and makes the less likely to want to leave.

I agree with you both. The way the team is shaping up it seems that with NCs investment background, he wants a young promising team that will either earn us more by being successful, or earn us more by selling them onto to richer clubs.. In the longer term.
yeah, your right about the selling on bit.
sell some and integrate some into the first team.but I think that is as you say, more of a long term strategy.short term we need to try to stay in this league, and that might mean some more spending.

yeah, again I agree.I like the way we're being seen as a club that gives youngsters a chance. as It only enhances our chances if we're trying to bid for some younger talent as they can see whats happening here.not only that but the academy players will take heart from the fact that adkins aint frightened to put the younger players in.gives them something to strive for,and makes the less likely to want to leave.
exactly ..... nigel said from the outset that it's important to keep a route open from the academy to the first team ..... he's done a first class job so far .
mr adkins has indeed done a first class job,I'm still a bit bemused that some fans wanted to get rid.he Is still learning just like the players, but what he's achieved since he came here is really quite remarkable.

Confucious, you're way too good to be giving this stuff away for free. Seriously, do you fancy writing a sitcom about football fans? I mean, it's really hard to think of any obvious joke of a football fanbase right now, but I reckon we could smash it.

We've been here many times.

Osprey is a fish-baiter, as we all know. It must be something in his nature; I wouldn't mind if he didn't seem to get rings run around him from by the Pompey fans.

You're not exactly catching many fish in your razor sharp talons, Osprey. If you had a brood to feed, they'd all be chriirping with hunger. Good grief.

I agree with you both. The way the team is shaping up it seems that with NCs investment background, he wants a young promising team that will either earn us more by being successful, or earn us more by selling them onto to richer clubs.. In the longer term.
yeah, your right about the selling on bit. sell some and integrate some into the first team.but I think that is as you say, more of a long term strategy.short term we need to try to stay in this league, and that might mean some more spending. ....but it's good being a saint aint it..........

yeah, again I agree.I like the way we're being seen as a club that gives youngsters a chance. as It only enhances our chances if we're trying to bid for some younger talent as they can see whats happening here.not only that but the academy players will take heart from the fact that adkins aint frightened to put the younger players in.gives them something to strive for,and makes the less likely to want to leave.
exactly ..... nigel said from the outset that it's important to keep a route open from the academy to the first team ..... he's done a first class job so far .
mr adkins has indeed done a first class job,I'm still a bit bemused that some fans wanted to get rid.he Is still learning just like the players, but what he's achieved since he came here is really quite remarkable. I just love being a saint, after years of sh!t...... just look at us now !
knee jerk reactions from people who know little methinks , all true fans that i know are happy with our progress ...... good innit !
problem is all us fans who could see the good that NA had done and was doing even at the start of the season, when we were playing well but losing to the top teams, were called happy clappers and told that we are idiots who know nothing about football. we were told how the back 4 were awful and would continue to ship in at least 3 goals a games and go down with the fewest points total ever. i know i was given abuse by so called fans for supporting NA and the team. where are those `fans` now? oh yes thats right their the ones who booed guly.
i love being a saints fan and always have, even in tough times.

exactly ..... nigel said from the outset that it's important to keep a route open from the academy to the first team ..... he's done a first class job so far .
mr adkins has indeed done a first class job,I'm still a bit bemused that some fans wanted to get rid.he Is still learning just like the players, but what he's achieved since he came here is really quite remarkable. I just love being a saint, after years of sh!t...... just look at us now !
knee jerk reactions from people who know little methinks , all true fans that i know are happy with our progress ...... good innit !
problem is all us fans who could see the good that NA had done and was doing even at the start of the season, when we were playing well but losing to the top teams, were called happy clappers and told that we are idiots who know nothing about football. we were told how the back 4 were awful and would continue to ship in at least 3 goals a games and go down with the fewest points total ever. i know i was given abuse by so called fans for supporting NA and the team. where are those `fans` now? oh yes thats right their the ones who booed guly.
i love being a saints fan and always have, even in tough times.
truth is that all proper fans are happy clappers .... that's our job after all .... to be slated on here for being positive about the team we love is beyond belief and i trust no one who does it !
I actually took that accusation, of being
a "happy clapper" as a badge of honour.
I simply support the saints, nothing more nothing less.whatever adkins puts on the pitch i will support. If I don't like what I see then I moan after the game. booing is not on the agenda

Both the last seasons were promotion ones. The one before that was coming out of Admin and winning the JPT. Anyone not happy with our progress has unrealistic ideals.

And I think that shows the different mind sets of our 2 teams fans. I, like most saints fans, am more than happy to debate football whereas most poopey fans seem stuck in the 70's.

Back on subject, how much money would you think we would accept for shaw? I don't want him to go nor do I think he will, just thinking if chelsea come in for him, and he wanted out, what would you let him go for? I wouldn't take less than £7.5mill.

Perhaps, if you kept off of their site, they wouldn't come to this one. You are as annoying to them as they are to us. Especially as you seem to be a bit inebriated judging by the quality of the wording, looks like you had a session before you went on there. Better use of the Caps Lock would give more credence to your posts. I have no doubts about your loyalty, but pots calling kettles black comes to mind.

Patience is a virtue.[/p]
ignore and report ....... do not respond , it's simple .[/p]
Good grief.[/p]
I see, it's bash Osprey week is it, I guess there are other sites that are more worthy of my skills, this one has gone downhill big time. I may return if I see any improvement.[/p]
You'll be back. Lol. City Saint
