Hampshire have signed Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal to play for the club in the latter part of the 2013 season.

Ajmal, recognised as one of the top spin bowlers in world cricket, said: “I am very pleased to be joining Hampshire to play in the County Championship.

“I have always enjoyed playing in England and look forward to playing my part in helping Hampshire get promoted.”

The 35-year-old will qualify as one the side’s overseas players during August and September.

Fellow overseas signing George Bailey is likely to be involved in Australia’s T20 internationals against England during that period – a series that slow-bowler Danny Briggs may also be a part of.

Hampshire manager Giles White said: “As things stand, it is possible that both George and Danny could be involved in the ODI series between England and Australia so the availability of Saeed for August and September is a great fit.

“He is one of the best bowlers in the world in all forms of the game and will add real quality to the squad at the business end of the season.”

Ajmaal previously played county cricket for Worcestershire, in 2011, taking 17 wickets in three first class matches, 11 wickets in four List A matches and 16 wickets in eight Twenty20 matches.
