Adkins: Lallana loss didn't cause defeat
7:00am Monday 24th December 2012 in Sport

Adam Lallana
Nigel Adkins stressed there was no guarantee Saints’ result against Sunderland would have been any different had injured captain Adam Lallana played.
The midfielder, who is expected to miss the next few weeks with knee ligament damage, was absent for the 1-0 defeat to the Black Cats at St Mary’s.
Adkins insisted the club are not overly-reliant on the 24-year-old and that a healthy Lallana might not have proved to be a difference on Saturday.
“It can’t be about one player. Every team’s going to have players that are going to be missing,” said Adkins.
“You’ve got to have a strong enough group of players that can go and contribute. Who’s to say if Adam had been playing it would have been any different?
“We’ve played Gastón Ramírez on the left-hand side to start off with and he plays there for Uruguay, and he does that very well, so we’ve got a talented player that has gone and played the position that Adam would have done.
“We can’t just turn round and say losing one player or missing one player was the (cause) of the result.”
Lallana’s absence led to Adkins employing a 4-4-2 formation, rather than his preferred 4-2-3-1 set-up, with Emmanuel Mayuka handed his first Premier League start in favour of Jay Rodriguez.
While the team offered barely any threat throughout the match, the Saints manager said it had been a different story in training during the week.
“We started Emmanuel and one of the big reasons was so we could get him in behind,” said Adkins.
“I’ll have to analyse why we didn’t. Why we didn’t find the pass, or why the run wasn’t there? I don’t know, but we didn’t get in behind."

It was de ja vu, as against Wigan, we had a game that should have yielded a positive result, but too many players, for what ever reason failed to give 100%, to say Lallana would not have made any difference is a bit tenuous, what Southampton FC needed was a spark, something special from one player and Adam is capable of doing that. Ramirez is capable, but on this day he was obviously not liking the conditions and was ineffective. Mayuk? why did he start? Possibly NA listening to pressure from the fans, I don't know. Probably will get flamed but I would give Guly a start at Fulham, it is his kind of game.

At least we have a game in hand on the rest. I'm sure Chelsea away will get us at least a point, lol.
All to do against Fulham. Let's see who steps up. If it's Guly, I think we can all give him the clean slate he would deserve.
I doubt we'll see Mayuka or the riddler again for a long while.
Personally I would give j-rod a start on the left at fulham, put gaston in the hole, let sir rickie wreak havoc on the knock downs and make cork the captain. And possibly partner davis with cork in the middle of the park. Spiderman looked tired, and/or afraid of his fifth yellow. It's a shame because I still see captain material in him otherwise.

We had plenty of options to replace Lallana, like for like, there was no need to tinker so much.

Spider did look a bit off and Davis did well as his replacement, Wouldn't be surprised to see Spider get his next booking just b4 the cup game. After that he will be able to get back to his normal game. Gaston has obvious talent but needs to step up a bit to justify his fee. Too easy to criticise a poor performance with the weather conditions the way they were. They got one lucky break and took it and then we let them off by not biting back hard enough. Just like in the Wigan game. Anyway as someone said on a previous thread we have gone from certain relegation to a battle, so that's a plus. Need to keep believing. COYR.

Saturday was down to the players - they just weren't there.
The goal was lucky - but I can't fault Sunderland for getting it and then closing out Saints like they did.
where did the long ball suddenly come from? all season I've been seeing a great passing game and then suddenly we are hoofing the ball up field? It didn't work the last time we played it so I don't know why it would work now.
However it's done and dusted - need to come away from Fulham with at least a point, would prefer three.

Fact is we haven't got an ambundence of quality in the squad and with lallana out you miss that and his high energy.
Ramirez is also a quality player who needs to see a lot of the ball, on Saturday for what ever reason that didn't happen, srl was labouring and we were losing possession as soon as we gained it. What is the answer? Sdr, guly, and Jay rod at the moment appear not to be. Srl is not an out n out goal scorer but a link up player similar to sheringham, Saturday there was nothing to link up and he almost looked like he was sulking.

Taking the additive and cummutative properties of the associative numbers and applying the inverse subtraction rule (with the quotient being negative and the reciprocals multiplying), we will win 5-2 on Boxing Day.
I haven't had time to calculate the exact score with Guly and Davis starting or Gazza v Kelvin in goal, but I've e mailed Nige with the formula so he can get one of Nicola's lackies to do it.
Surprisingly Foxy playing doesn't alter the result as we score as many from his crosses as we concede from his defensive slips.
Anyhow, using my scientific methodology, we can be pretty confident of predicting a win by at least two clear goals (plus one extra with my lucky pants on).
I've given Nige a separate formula to decide who should play in the hole, but have explained this is only 53% reliable.
It would be rather apt if, in the window, we signed Gustav Moth to play in the hole.

I've been working on the numbers. Fulham got thumped 4-0 by Liverpool who lost 3-1 to Villa last week, Villa got thrashed 8-0 yesterday. We beat Villa 4-1 and drew 2-2 with Fulham.

What we need over Christmas is simple. As I pointed out on an earlier thread, Strasbourg thinks of itself as the Capital of Christmas. This makes Spiderman (with Punch and Cork) playing in a croissant-shaped midfield formation just in front of a back 5 croissant-shaped defence (Fox, Shaw, Fonte, Yoshida and Clyne) a MUST.
Stick Ramirez behind SRL in what is known in France as 'le pan-au-chocolat ligne de but' and we'll be in for a tasty 3 points.
Of course, given how often Fox gets caught out of position drifting downfield, many will see this as justifying their belief in a straight forward 4-4-2. Those of us who understand a bit more about croissants and les chocolatines know differently.
Joyeux Noël et une Bonne Année tout le monde!
Or, as they say here in Portugal:
Feliz Natal e um Feliz Ano Novo a todos!

I think Nigel is going to need bigger whiteboards to take on this level of analysis. He must be well into his tenth set of erasable pens this season.
I'm not sure about the "hole" I thought that's what we had a Cork for (yo ho ho we do have a laugh dont we .. )
Perhaps we should consider standard deviation as a way of eliminating errors ... its a big formula and would put off the BBC asking questions about it in the post match interviews .. although I'm sure Nige would explain it very lucidly.
Regardless of the maths I have to say I never cease to marvel at Nige's middle management vocabulary though, after weeks of "playing as one" "underpinning the positives" and being swayed by his " there's goals in this team" comment I am disappointed by "we were flat" ......
I thought there were a myriad of other phrases to describe what was effectively a lack of imagination. my favourite, which I haven't heard lately on the telly, is "we didnt get the ball into the corridor of uncertainty" ..
Anyway a two goal win margin would have me wiping the whiteboard clean and getting ready for a happy New Year.
All the best !
I think we will beat Fulham .. I would never have thought of that if the Echo hadnt put up that "Saints target a win at Fulham" headline .. but now Im thinking hey! yeah! .. good idea !!

I'm afraid NA not for the first time this season looked totally clueless in the second half. Why of why was de Ridder included in the matchday squad? He hadn't even played in the premier league! Guly once again was awful and Davis has no 'forward' gear. I wonder who picks the squad I don't think it's NA! He said he will utilise the whole squad over the festive period. Is he managing a football team or a Boy Scouts outfit? Surely if you want to win in this league you play your strongest team?!!!!!
NA needs to be more assertive otherwise he will be off in January.

It is not enough to trap, control then pass, the decision of were it is going and what the person receiving himself is going to do needs to happen about 3 times as fast.
England even when they were not so embarrasingly bad would make the same mistake, simply put they took to long..
Teams beat us often with only one or two chances all game but they are incisive and cut us to shreds...yet for most of the game we have the ball, to what end if not to rip THEM open..
Talentented individuals sure, but collectively they are behind the 'thinking' speed of the premiership..
It is not an individual's problem nor one which a 'wonder' signing will solve...more a collective knowledge of what to do before they do it..
Also in the early stages when we threaten we simply do not convert an acceptable percentage, although we were free scoring in championship we missed hundreds it was obvious to all that this profligacy would never win games in PL..
Pretty football at times yes, clinical no..we need both.

Spider should be dropped and JWP to start with Cork in midfield. If this doesn't happen I predict as follows: Fulham 2 Saints 1; Stoke 2 Saints 0; & Saints 0 Arsenal 3. Saturdays performance can give no Saints fan any hope at all. You only have to read the national papers at the weekend to see that Spider and Ramirez both scored 5 out of 10 to see that the midfield needs shaking up. I don't think Davis fits the bill as he's too negative. JWP will at least go forward.

I understand that Fox is back training. No doubt he will come back in at left back and Shaw will be dropped to the bench like JWP was dropped to the bench when Cork returned. All the hype about Shaw will have an adverse affect on him. All the nonsense you hear about the big clubs coming in for him an about him being another Gareth Bale - for God's sake! He's 17. He's an outstanding talent and has done very well. However, on Saturday he struggled at times and was caught ball watching when Sunderland scored failing to get tight own or close down Fletcher - MOTD showed that! We have one of the top three academys in the country and yet we are still 15 years behind the Ajax and Barca model..both very, very similar..
The average trainee here has around 4000 hours of actual close control by the age of I think 14...over there it is 10.000 hours...
...in all sports and indeed life, practice, practice, practice...who said the more I practice the luckier I get?
Our coaches discard youngsters who are not naturals yet in Europe they have taken mediocre players and by repeating the same basics over and over these kids who would be discarded here eventually as they become automatic in their movements and control put our best to shame...
We need to be at the forefront of these teaching methods...

Our coaches discard youngsters who are not naturals yet in Europe they have taken mediocre players and by repeating the same basics over and over these kids who would be discarded here eventually as they become automatic in their movements and control put our best to shame...
We need to be at the forefront of these teaching methods...

I've been working on the numbers. Fulham got thumped 4-0 by Liverpool who lost 3-1 to Villa last week, Villa got thrashed 8-0 yesterday. We beat Villa 4-1 and drew 2-2 with Fulham.

The team against Sunderland was the one I would have picked. A few may have gone for Gazza and Jay Rod instead of Kelv and Mayuka but the rest of the team picks itself.

I agree he didn't play well on Saturday, but he's usually one of our best players.
I'm not a great fan of de Ridder, but not having played in the prem before is hardly a logical reason for not playing him. After all, everyone who has ever played him in the prem has had to have a debut.

De Ridder was brought on to add pace to the left, and it worked in my opinion. It always helps to have someone who can take on a player and get them booked. I'd like to see him come on more. They ended up doubling up on him and he still managed to cause problems.
On the not played in the Premier League before, I presume you wouldn't have played Lambert at all this season then?
Puncheon was kept quite all game by Rose, who was fantastic. I think Punch would have been better on the left as they had a midfielder playing right back and his pace would have been more effective.
Guly was on for 10 minutes and you say he was awful, it's hardly long to make an impact, and he showed a new, better, attitude I reckon and some decent touches.

A pacy winger that can consistently get a decent cross into the box wouldn't go amiss either.

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to Osprey, Baddesley, Kenny and the rest of my fans, too numerous to mention individually.
I will repeat my wish list for the Festive Season for those of you who may have missed it:-
1) NA to stay in his job
2) Saints to stay in the PL
3) NA&NC to clear out the dross and buy better than they did in the close season and bring in an experienced coach -- wish (2) may well depend on it!!
4) The Spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future to visit Nicola Cortese and have the same success as they did with Ebenezer --- although I know that is a very tall order indeed!
5) The Directors of Solent Interiors to choose their clients more carefully in 2013 and will be paid on time for the great work they do!
It is the season of goodwill to all men --- and although I appreciate none of you are not in the same league as I, when it comes to football knowledge, never-the-less, I bear no grudge and wish you all well!
...all the same...merry Xmas you miserable old buggar! :O)

Did you say you'll be over in Feb/March?
I'm intending to take the boys to Newcastle. I gather it's likely to be moved to the Sunday 24/2 and it's the day before term restarts but, hey!
So, if that one's on your schedule, let me know.
Ive just paid Bill out. I put his money on a Jack Cork score any time,11/2.
We lost.
Not sure if I'll make the Station pre-match yet. I have to collect my cousin at Parkway and he may be running late.
But I was thinking of popping into the now famous Joshua Tree and pitching big-little Strassie against little Seed and little Velleity on the pool table with the winning family getting a free round off the other two families.
Where is it? Do you go there after matches, too?

Saints need to get the cheque book out in the January sales. A class centre back and a hard nut gritty midfielder, who can strike a bit of fear into the opposition by winning tackles and settin up the play. A pacy winger that can consistently get a decent cross into the box wouldn't go amiss either.

The coaching staff aren't up to Premier League standard, it's as simple as that!
I've been saying all season that NA needs the help of a first class coach.
Interesting that the first thing Bagpuss did, on taking over at QPR, was to bring in his own two coaches, Bond and Jordan.
Saints can play like Barcelona on the training pitch, its what happens against real opposition that counts.

ah yes the ancient language of jibberish. do you realise there are now probably less than 10,000 proficient speakers of this local language, only a few years ago apparently 200,000 of them were on southsea front all talking jibberish
Recently there’s been a bit of a revival in farmerish; and some of the farmers have been swarming in unheard of numbers at the local cattle market, and shouting “pride of the saarf”.
Sadly, a lot of the new generation have forgotten their west country roots and changed the word “south-west” to south, hence “pride of the saarf-west”, the original chant has been lost. Many historians feel that this happened in the seventies when a local’s team of donkeys won a national award.
On the subject of Donkeys. Many local councillors now want the donkey to be part of a new town emblem, which they feel epitomises their town as some researchers believes donkeys are smarter, more easily trained, longer-lived and hardier than horses, and they can go longer without water than a horse; something which the locals just love.
Indeed one local story is that there was a time when some local donkeys reached the national gala final for 27 consecutive years; even though they never won any of the races.

I'm intending to take the boys to Newcastle. I gather it's likely to be moved to the Sunday 24/2 and it's the day before term restarts but, hey!
So, if that one's on your schedule, let me know.

Meanwhile, what links Santa with the Skates?
In both cases, their significant moments are always very short, and once those moments have past, there quickly comes a time when everyone stops believeing that they ever really existed.

What are our chances tomorrow? Can we deal with Berbatov, and Ruiz if he plays? Would really appreciate a result of some sort.

I would actually have played Davis in a 3 man midfield as the more offensive of the 3. This would of given us more control of the midfield whilst letting Punch, SRL and Gaston license to do their thing. Davis struggled in the absence of Cork because sitting in front of the back 4 isn't his game, getting forward and chipping in with goals (lampard style) is what Davis did at Rangers.
Nigel's tactics for Fulham should be quite interesting, do we sit back like we did at Liverpool or do we try and get on the front foot like we did against QPR. I think I know what suits us best! Over to you Nige..! Coyr
