Fulham 1 Saints 1
1:15pm Wednesday 26th December 2012 in Sport
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
This live event has finished
Latest
- Saints stay 17th after draw with Fulham
- Nigel Adkins' side now one point above drop zone
- Dimitar Berbatov gave Fulham early lead
- Rickie Lambert equalised with a late penalty
5:36pm
That result keeps Saints 17th, but moves them a point clear of the relegation zone, after Wigan lost at Everton. We will have some reaction for you on the website later and a full report and quotes in tomorrow's Daily Echo.
4:53pm
FULL-TIME: Fulham 1 Saints 1
4:47pm
GOAL Fulham 1 Saints 1 (Rickie Lambert pen 85): Chris Baird is penalised for handlin a corner in the box, with referee Phil Dowd pointing to the spot. Rickie Lambert slams the penalty to Mark Schwarzer's right. The Fulham keeper gets to the ball, but is beaten by the sheer power of it.
4:41pm
CHANCE (78 mins): Shaw's cross from the left finds Lambert, who hits a stinging left-foot volley that flashes just over the bar.
4:26pm
CHANCE (66 mins): Dejgah flashes a low shot across the face of goal, in what is one of the very few chances created by either side in a rather dismal second-half.
4:07pm
CHANCE (47 mins): Puncheon hits a left foot shot from the edge of the area across goal, but it skids just wide of the far post.
3:46pm
HALF-TIME: Fulham 1 Saints 0
3:38pm
CHANCE (35 mins): The game has descended into a quiet spell. Morgan Schneiderlin did have a half-chance, with a low shot from 20 yards, but he pulled it well wide of the post.
3:23pm
CHANCE (20 mins): A rare break forward for Saints. The ball falls to Cork 25 yards out, but his well-hit low shot is held by Schwarzer in the Fulham goal.
3:19pm
CHANCE (16 mins): Rodallega plays Kacanikilc down the left. His cross picks out Berbatov on the penalty spot, but he puts his header wide.
3:11pm
GOAL: Fulham 1 Saints 0 (Berbatov 8): Riether overlaps down the right side and delivers a low cross that flashes across the six-yard box. Davis dives down to it, but spills it in the wet conditions, with Berbatov gratefully readjusting his body and sweeping the ball home. The Fulham forward then reveals a T-shirt that reads "Keep calm and pass me the ball". He's booked for it, but for Fulham it's hard to argue against that advice.
3:06pm
CHANCE (3 mins): Fulham break down the right with Rodallega, who squares the ball to Sidwell on the edge of the area in space, but his low shot is just wide of the post.
2:56pm
The teams are on their way out here at Craven Cottage. Kick-off just a few moments away. We will have updates here for you throughout the match.
2:21pm
In terms of Christmas, I think the games we've got are winnable. We go into those games fully intending to set our stall out so we can win those games. That's what we'll ask of ourselves. Who knows if Dimitar Berbatov is the man to watch out for against Fulham. I am not sure if he has scored many this season, has he? He is a top class player but he is not their only player. He didn't play against us down here and we conceded two goals so they've got quality all over the pitch. They wouldn't have been in the Premier League for this amount of time if they weren't quality so we will obviously pay them respect, but it is about turning up on the day, performing and taking the three points.
Saints keeper Kelvin Davis
2:14pm
Just one change for Saints, which comes as no surprise. Emmanuel Mayuka is dropped to the bench after a disappointing display against Sunderland, with Steven Davis replacing him in the starting line-up.
2:13pm
THE LINE-UPS:
SAINTS: K Davis, Clyne, Fonte, Yoshida, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Cork, S Davis, Puncheon, Ramirez, Lambert.
Subs: Boruc, Hooiveld, Richardson, Ward-Prowse, Guly, Mayuka, Rodriguez.
FULHAM: Schwarzer, Riether, Hangeland, Senderos, Riise, Dejagah, Sidwell, Baird, Kacaniklic, Berbatov, Rodallega.
Subs: Stockdale, Kelly, Karagounis, Briggs, Hughes, Ruiz, Frei.
Referee: P Dowd.
1:46pm
Sometimes they showed they can get the results and sometimes their weaknesses have been exploited, like we have. You saw a big contradiction with Aston Villa, losing 8-0 at Chelsea after winning at Liverpool the week before. That is the Barclays Premier League for you. It is unbelievably strong so you have to be strong in your organisation and you need your players that can make the difference. I feel we have got these players and hopefully they will be available. Even when they're not, we have got other players that can do the job, but the margin is a bit thin between being successful and not successful. I don't think (Adam Lallana being out) matters. If you see them, they had Jay Rodriguez and we had a close look at him. He was quite expensive and they bought him. They have Gaston Ramirez, who has over £10million and is a good player. He can play on that flank and if you see Jason Puncheon on the other flank, he has done very well. They also have Emmanuel Mayuka, who we had a look at as well. He was £6million or £7million. They have a few players that can fill in that role. We have to do that all the time so why couldn't they come up with a solution?
Fulham manager Martin Jol
1:44pm
I’ve highlighted you need to win your games at home, especially against the teams around us. It hasn’t gone our way. We’ll analyse it, we’ll quickly move on, we’ll draw a line underneath it and get ourselves ready for the next one. All the games are going to be pressurised. What we’ve got to do is make sure we regroup and get ourselves ready for Fulham. They’re good, they play that 4-4-1-1 very well, with Berbatov between the lines. They’re well-organised defensively, they’re a unit, similar to what we go and do. So they’ll be a team that’s difficult to break down, but one we believe we can score against.
Saints manager Nigel Adkins
1:24pm
Fulham squad news: Bryan Ruiz could return today. The 27-year-old has been out since coming off in the 3-1 defeat to Sunderland on November 18 with a hamstring injury, but is rated 50-50 by manager Martin Jol for a return. Mahamadou Diarra and Mladen Petric are doubts and Damien Duff is definitely out. Simon Davies (hip) is also unavailable, while Steve Sidwell returns from suspension.
1:20pm
Saints squad news: Adam Lallana will again miss out with a knee injury. Saints didn't appear to have any other obvious injury problems emanating from the loss to Sunderland last weekend, though.
1:16pm
1:15pm
Hello and welcome to the Daily Echo’s blog covering the Boxing Day clash between Fulham and Saints, at Craven Cottage. Nigel Adkins’ side were smarting over Christmas after suffering a deflating home defeat to Sunderland last weekend. They have a chance to bounce back from that today as they travel to an out-of-form Fulham team, who have won just one of their last ten league matches. Saints remain outside of the bottom three on goal difference going into today’s game and will be hoping to earn a bit of extra breathing space with a second away success of the campaign.

Got some special long-lasting adhesive coated chopsticks which you can easily hold a whole spring roll in with no fear of dropping it; a big snow man mould (just pack the snow in and separate the two halves and you've got a perfect snow man); a pair of "sock-ets" which are socks with little pockets in them for small change/car keys etc - and a pack of "Kelvin Davis SureStopper" condoms from the club shop.
Also got an Olympic Torch cigarette lighter, but it's far too big to be useful quite honestly.

Just like the Sunderland game here..Opposition have done nothing, but we've gifted another bloody soft goal out of nothing, and despite the nice build up, we're not cutting it in the final third...Waiting too long to shoot, or not slipping the ball in to the danger zone.
Need more urgency and thrust in the final 30 yards in this second half..
Still think Fulham are there for the takin here, if our front boys have a bit more confidence...

Keep calm ....... on route from the North, we stopped off in Fatima. For those who don't know it's a religious site. You know, loads of churches and candles but far more shops than anything else all selling the same cr4p - effigies of Mary, crosses (oh, yes, how we could do with s few good crosses in the second half) and different shapes and sizes of the good Lord. Anyway, I said a prayer, so we can expect a lot better in the second half.

At last. A pen! Long overdue, even if a bit dubious. So many poor decisions against us in last half a dozen games. Nice to get one our way.
Of course, I take full credit for the fact that a ref finally gave a penalty our way. Had I not popped into Fatima .......
As for the game and the performance, heaving missed the first half, it's hard for me to comment. However, had we not got something (and we nearly didn't), I would have been worried. Fulham looked a total mess. Even worse than they were at SMS, and I thought they looked pants that day.
If we can't finish above them (and at lest 4 others), it won't say much for us.
Still, let's take the point and hope we play somewhat better in the next 2 games - we'll need to.

Nigel Adkins probably won’t be with us by the summer, defiantly not by this time next year. The Liebherr family don’t strike me as fools, they’re not going to bankroll a manager in the manner they have with Nigel, to see performances like we have seen this season.
Now the happy clappers will cough up their usual glib comments following a poor performance, such as, onwards and upwards, bring on Stoke and Arsenal! While desperately trying to prove their loyalty to the club, they are sweeping under the carpet the obvious, our build up play is way too slow allowing opposition defenses to always keep their shape and competently deal with our attacks. We wasted the chance to properly strengthen the squad in the summer and we have a manager who is out of his depth. He couldn’t even settle on a keeper in pre season, trying three in the first seven games of the season, incredible!
Now, it’s understandable that after back to back promotions, fans feel that he is due the opportunity to turn things round, and quite right! But I doubt after the war chest they gave NA, our club will ever get the chance to spend so much in such a short period of time without seeing results. We are missing the chance to establish ourselves as a permanent fixture in the Premier League, vying for a Europa cup place. Which a club of our size and potential, should be doing!

So, 3 positives:
1. We faught back in difficult conditions to get a (deserved) point
2. The centre-back pairing looks better and better (although I'm with those who want a top CB brought in during the window) So .......
3. The transfer window should bring some movement in and out.
The negative
1. We have struggled to beat two average teams over Christmas and conceded another poor goal today (okay, that's 2 negs, but I'm working on the theory that 2 negs make a positive)

Nigel spent a significant amount in the summer, affording him the chance to add quality players to a squad already containing some very talented players, and in the process, to secure our Premiership status. The results and performances tell their own story as to his success in this area.
As for the happy clappers, I’ve heard of seeing the glass half full, but your posts take it to the extreme! How can you look at the facts and still pretend that we haven’t missed an excellent opportunity to see the club taken to the next level. These chances appear rarely and fleetingly for a club such as ours. Maybe you don’t share the same high opinion and belief in the club that I have!

We have a UEFA four star stadium, some of the best training facilities in the land, a support base catchment area which is generous to say the least, a club owned by a family with considerable financial clout and a youth academy which in recent years has been nothing short of prolific! All of these act as an excellent springboard to help the club establish itself as a Premiership club.

We weren’t shocking, but we were poor.

I hear Merrington was going bonkers that it took Nigel so long to adjust from long ball to the stranded and isolated Ricki, to putting Gaston back in the hole and replacing the mundane Davis with JRod.
As for the other Davies, his time is up hugely at fault for the Fulham opener.

With respect Fulham are an average or below average side whereas Saints are technically superior generally but we have performed below average the last two games. Main problems I'm afraid are the keeper position in general and I notice we are very narrow in our play; 65 per cent of attacking play in the central channel. Most teams concede when the opposition have wide play. This is NA's decision.

Two promotions and you think we should be setting the world alight.
Ever heard of continuity? Most team's primary goal in this league is survival followed by the compilation of a squad to make that goal easier year on year.
Adkins and the board have had a single transfer window - what are you expecting? You talk about potential, but you want it instantly; don't be so naive.
Two seasons ago league 1 after being on the brink of extinction; be thankful that you're watching us play against Man U et al instead of teams like Crawley, Bournemouth and Accrington Stanley.

The trouble with English football (and I speak as an old winger, so I'm as guilty as anyone) is that, with the Wimbledon/Watford hoofball exceptions (for which there's very little excuse), it's all so boringly predictable. Win the ball, play it wide, hang a cross into the box and ........
I'd be interested to watch a video of every England goal from open play of the past 50 years and see how many didn't involve route one, a shot from distance, a bit of individual flair or play down the wings. In short, THAT goal (the third or fourth) against Holland in '96.
The future is clearly more about holding onto the ball and moving it about so as to vary the options. It's just that we've not yet perfected it; but with the current coaching set up, you can see the progress we're making.
After all, least we forget, we've come rapidly through the leagues, it's our first year back in the Prem, and new (hopefully better) players are slowly being added and are being bedded in.
It takes time but the signs are, over all, very good.

RL could have been into double figs by now if you go by some of the missed decisions in recent weeks. Have to say though, it looks like another massive 2 points dropped; even if we did rescue 1point. Fulham looked there for the taking. Everyone knows exactly how we are going to set ourselves out now. The only open book was "who would replace AL in his position on left. Surprise, surprise let's put Ramirez out there. Just like Sunderland. Even when subs come on they are expected to take up a place in the same pattern.

At last.

And a note to NA. The slow, short passing game is only of use if you’re the 82 Brazil team or seeing out a game that you are winning. Let’s mix up our play a bit and keep the opposition defense on its toes. We are way too predictable. We shouldn’t be allowing defenses to always keep their shape. In the final third, let’s be more decisive. Play some direct stuff, some longer passes for the forwards to run onto. Get the players to make some telling runs! And don’t resort to the long ball when all else fails.

Our midfield was IMO very poor. Spider and Davis were non-existant; Cork was erratic and Gaston I'm afraid is an absolute waste of space and money. He does the odd bit of fancy foot work but no end product.
Clyne was poor; Yoshida awful; Fonte seems to want to hoof everything and Shaw today apart from doing a couple of good runs made mistakes in defending no doubt he's tiring having played a lot recently.
Lambert again looks lazy, overweight and his body language says 'its all too much bother.'
Puncheon has gone off following recent good displays he would be so much better if he could use his right foot.
NA appears not to have a clue. He waited and waited until he brought two subs on Rodriguez and Guly. Why?
Why oh why when the mid field are so poor will NA not use JWP? He was on the bench! E couldn't have done any worse than Spider, Davis and Ramirez!!!! I think as far as JWP is concerned there are probably political reasons as to why he's not playing if that is the case it's a disgrace.
I noticed that Fox travelled today. No doubt he will replace Shaw against Stoke and NA will rearrange the bench - his way of 'utilising the squad over the festive season'.

I'm very concerned at this rate Saints are going one way - down. I hope I'm wrong. Cortèse needs to spend in January!
Finally 10 / 10 to the Saint fans today they sung their hearts out in the second half - excellent!!!!!
On a positive note.....other than the fans being excellent, which they are normally at every away game, especially in London, we did get point and the skunts got beat and I had cold meat and mash etc.

However, re our current tendency to play through the middle, if you watch, say, Spain (not a bad example), unlike, say, England (not a good one), the play tends to be much more central, with the wings being used more sparingly and, thus, less predictably so as have a much greater effect.

Kelvin is not good enough - Gazza has cost us points - Boruc is the same
INVEST TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
Against Fulham - after the softest goal you will ever see that we conceded - we had to chase the game and only the Crowd in the second half and a phenomenal effort by the Players saved the Day.
The sooner Nigel acknowledges this - the sooner Southampton will move to mid table safety.

They seem to think that Lambo was given absolutely no service where it counted, his work when he did get the ball was excellent. They said Puncheon only looked good during the period when he went wide left. Ramirez showed flashes of his talent during the last fifteen minutes when he went in to the "hole", should have been there all of the time. They did wonder at the timing of the substitutions too, JRod could have been on earlier. They did state that we were the better team for the last quarter. The Saints supporters were very loud and consistent throughout, well done them, they deserved to get something from the game. Stoke have just beaten Liverpool 3 - 1 and look a good side, but may have picked up a vital yellow card or two? I don't fancy Mayuka v Crouch, that is a bit of a mismatch. Trying hard not to be negative, it is not easy. You are right, some decent signings could be the turning point, but being one point above the relegation line is better than I expected 3 weeks ago. No bookings for us again, that is impressive but are we being too nice?

Unfortunately some one who calls themselves 'Bring back Branfoot' after the most hated manager we've ever had isn't off to a good start. With someone else it could be just humour but his appearance co-incided with the banning of a couple of skunts and therefore looked like a re-appearance. Then he immediately sided with skunts against Saints fans, something I've never ever seen before. It's a credibility issue not an opinion issue.

Saints play best with a 4411. Lets keep in simple - If Adam is out it is Fox If Rickie is on the side then it is Jay If Spider is suspended then JWP.
You get me drift.
Love the Saints but Barca we are not (yet)
In short - play the players in best positions, support Rickie and get some crosses in from the wings

Make no mistake, the aim this year is to survive. Nothing more. Build in January, build further in the summer, turn over the squad in a sensible period of time and continue to bring on the youth prospects. This plan has been outlined numerous times, by NA, by NC, and by most sensible Saints fans. So to expect something different is the sign of someone a little out of touch with the club.....COYR

We are not doing it for Rickie... but have to say Rickie was rarely in position to receive it he was off fluffing around in the wings or trying to be a midfielder. Tell me I'm wrong.. honestly.

I am pleased you have an idea and opinion on what is going on, but to slate everything every player is doing, plus the subs, and the formation, and the supposed politics.....cheer up Ebeneezer, we have to realise where we are in the evolution of this club, you cannot sign 12 new players and expect the club to have continuity, so we sign 4/5 and hope they gel and the others grow into the league.
Just got back from the game and although we managed a point it was a very disappointing performance from a mediocre Saints side.
I'm very concerned at this rate Saints are going one way - down. I hope I'm wrong. Cortèse needs to spend in January!
Finally 10 / 10 to the Saint fans today they sung their hearts out in the second half - excellent!!!!!

We weren’t shocking, but we were poor.
As for credibility, have you lost the plot? You act like people have to prove themselves to the likes of you. Really?
No offense, but I could care less what the likes of you think. There are people on this thread that I'm genuinely interested in hearing their opinions. You and the rest of the Stepford wives, not being among them!

The mantra, that they keep chanting to themselves is “Nigel’s doing a good job, he’ll turn it round’.
Slowly, some of then are admitting we were correct, but they hate having to concede that they didn’t identify a patently obvious weakness in our game play.

We already had players like, Cork, Lallana, Lambert. So why spend 7mill on Jrod? He will be offloaded & we will lose out financially on him. And Mayuka, I'm not sold on him.
If he had worked on strengthening the back a bit more we wouldn't have looked so susceptible to shipping soft goals. Credit where it's due, Clyne was a really good signing, but why not buy Butland and a decent CB and LB. Shaw is brilliant, but young. Also, an out & out ball winner in the middle of the park, would have been desirable.
We had the basis of a good team, but why did he spend so much on attacking players, Sharp, Jrod, Lee, Mayuka and Ramírez, whilst neglecting the back!

Sorry I am not convinced that Butland is worth the ludicrous fee being demanded. Adkins has made a lot of mistakes IMO both tactically and financially but is it any good chopping and changing managers, he deserves this window at least to get things right. Qpr I seem to remember when promoted bought in almost a new squad and reportedly have no team spirit and look where they are.
Do agree we need to up the tempo to our play and have urgency, lallana has that and is missed. Take gerrard out of the liverpool team and you have the same.

We are missing the chance to establish ourselves as a permanent fixture in the Premier League, vying for a Europa cup place. Which a club of our size and potential, should be doing!
As for credibility, have you lost the plot? You act like people have to prove themselves to the likes of you. Really?
No offense, but I could care less what the likes of you think. There are people on this thread that I'm genuinely interested in hearing their opinions. You and the rest of the Stepford wives, not being among them!

That is a very good post, I agree with you 100%, and even with Gerrard in the side yesterday, Liverpool were beaten by a team that played honest football despite not having any real star names, it can be done. NA has made a fair number of tactical blunders this Season, it is almost all down to lack of Premier experience rather than ineptitude, but he is learning from his mistakes, he has to if we are to survive.

Nigel spent a significant amount in the summer, affording him the chance to add quality players to a squad already containing some very talented players, and in the process, to secure our Premiership status. The results and performances tell their own story as to his success in this area.

And the slow, predictable way he's got the team playing, has held us back from building on this "excellent opportunity". Concrete enough?
Adkins has made a lot of mistakes IMO both tactically and financially but is it any good chopping and changing managers, he deserves this window at least to get things right. Qpr I seem to remember when promoted bought in almost a new squad and reportedly have no team spirit and look where they are.
Do agree we need to up the tempo to our play and have urgency, lallana has that and is missed. Take gerrard out of the liverpool team and you have the same.

I still believe we had a winning team and pulled it apart somehow, you can say they were not good enough for the prem but they were a team.
30 mill has been spent, on what? You cant see it. Yes we should have spent big on 1 goalie, but I still think Boruc could have a a part to play with his experience, he is fiery so what and a top central defender or 2.
At the moment we dont need a midfield because we keep punting it up, why cant we keep posession?
Still think we will stay up though, but it will have to be seen if Adkins survives Jan, sorry to say it.

Have we exceeded expectations since Adkins joined? Of course. Can we still improve? Undoubtedly. Are we more likely to improve with Adkins than anyone else who is either available or affordable? Probably. I don't buy the arguements of those who constantly advocate changes in management personnel and tactics as a means to improvement. I see Saints today as similar to Liverpool when they started their rise under Shankly - look it up if you don't know the story. Liverpool were an average second tier team and Shankly was a newish manager with no track record of managing 'big' teams in the big league of the day. He was allowed time to develop his knowledge and the team, and apply his methods and tactics. He stayed 15 years, winning the league 3 times and the FA cup twice.

Out of all the signings NA has made in the last eleven months, only three are first team regulars, Clyne, Ramírez and Yoshida. And Ramirez, whilst a quality player, hasn’t, as yet, proved worthy of his price tag and that he can make the necessary impact we need him to this season. And Yoshy, looking better with every game, but!
The other seven, Sharp, Lee, Davis, Gazza, Boruc, Jrod and Mayuka, have been unable to establish themselves, in a team battling relegation! That’s a transfer success rate that doesn’t breed confidence! It’s the equivalent to trying different door handles and seeing which one opens.

Given the ruthless nature of our chairman perhaps even he realises where the fault lay and that is why NA is still with us. Don't ever forget, however, that it is almost wholly down to NC for us being where we are today. He hasn't let us down yet and even he is allowed an odd mistake. He is also ruthless enough to refuse to let any of our better players go if he thinks we need to keep them.Anyway we arn't down yet. 2 or three good results on the bounce and we'll all be a lot happier. Villa are struggling, Fulham no great shakes, Wigan are due a relegation, so we live in hope. We have managed to get to the transfer window and are still in with a good chance of staying up. A couple of good signings and a lot could change. Next two games are toughies and if we get anything from them we will have done well. A good result at Villa very important. COYS.

And the slow, predictable way he's got the team playing, has held us back from building on this "excellent opportunity". Concrete enough?

And we switch from a team keeping the ball for way too long, to a team humping it forward. To me, it points to a manager out of his depth, at this level. Please Nigel, prove me wrong!
If we all agree that we need to speed our play up, why not have Ramírez, who has a lot of creativity, play in players with pace, such as JRod. Maybe this would help utilise both players strengths? But let's be more assertive in our play in the final third!

Who should we have bought? Who did we have the opportunity to buy but didn't? Apart from Butland, who plays for a team that is 6th from bottom of the Championship and has conceded 38 goals, you haven't really made much of an effort too answer the questions. What you have given us is an appraisal of the players we bought and the players we already have.
That said, it is clear, even to a happy clapper like me, that not all our signings have been instant successes and that we are not playing as effectively as we were earlier in the season.

Somehow I think there are a few reasons for this, tactical changes call for different methods, good (experienced) Premier Managers spend a lot of time watching vids of their next opposition and adjust their team and tactics to match as best as they can using the squad that they have. Weather conditions, in particular the last couple of weeks have had a major effect on how to use the ball to do the work. No good playing fast tippy tappy when the ball is getting stuck on a sodden pitch. Long balls are no use if the wind and rain are swirling around making it impossible to control. Come Spring and Summer with warm dry days and a perfect pitch we will see the best of Ramirez and co. who will make the ball do the work. Something to look forward to.

In the 91/92 season, we had the likes of Shearer, Tiss, Razor, Kenna, Doddy, Adams, Hurlock and Hall. A nice little blend, that underachieved, why? Because Branny thought by hoofing the ball forward we’d strike gold. Don’t tell me another manager wouldn’t have done better with that group.

To be honest, I have no idea. As I said in another comment, it's about learning by trial and error. That's true for tactics and for buying players. Not every signing works out. That's life. You just have to learn to live with it, learn from it and keep trying to improve. I think we're doing that.

Come Spring and Summer with warm dry days and a perfect pitch we will see the best of Ramirez and co. who will make the ball do the work. Something to look forward to.
What do we do if the pitch is sodden and the rain is swirling around? Because according to you, we can't play short balls on a sodden pitch or long balls when it's rainy or windy? Do enlighten me.

If you give it any thought at all, you'll realise that it's not like popping down to Tesco. You decide on a target and you're up against another dozen teams (if the player truly is good) all bidding different amounts to the owner and terms to the player. Add in agents muddyine the water and the fact that the current team may not want the player to leave and it's a mangled business. It's no wonder that players get away.
That point also misses out the obvious problem which is that we don't have a time machine to go back and change things, so it's not really a constructive comment, just a whine.
Comments about whom we might sign in January welcome, of course.

Nevertheless, it saw us through two successive promotions and to expect a massive change of tactics and personnel is unrealistic. This coud have lead to a shambolic mish mash such as the current QPR situation.
Yes, we need more quality and cover bought in...but wholesale changes will not help us imo. We must continue to learn and evolve.

Somehow I think there are a few reasons for this, tactical changes call for different methods, good (experienced) Premier Managers spend a lot of time watching vids of their next opposition and adjust their team and tactics to match as best as they can using the squad that they have. Bring back Branfoot wrote:It would take far too long to explain it all in words of four letters or less so that you could understand it. Basically if you play short passe on a wet pitch, they tend to grind to a halt early and don't reach the intended target. If you lump high balls up to your Centre Forward a gust of wind can make it difficult to read the trajectory. So, good players adapt with chipped passes to their team mates, but that is a difficult task to get it accurate, you can't play tippy tappy with the ball in the air, it doesn't work. So often yesterday, a normally hit pass either stuck in the mud, or went screaming along the turf and out of play, Ricky said as much in his post match interview. Our tippy tappy play when the pitches were dry was excellent to watch and while we had possession the opposition couldn't do anything as they couldn't get the ball. The trick is not to lose possession in critical areas, that is where most of the opposition threat has come from. Just simply blaming a GK for a mistake is too easy, if the defence is doing their job right the GK wouldn't be put into the position where his mistakes could cost us so dearly.

I honestly believe we are a club that has the potential to be vying for a Europa cup place.
I do too but shouldn't we be learning to walk before we start running?

Interesting..... Shankly was witty, as sharp as a pin and very captivating. Not knocking Nigel but he is none of these, if you've heard 1 of his interviews you've heard em all, they consist of a lot of 'verys and hard workings! In fact every Nigel I know are quite boring.
