Gaston to continue his right to roam
10:50am Thursday 27th December 2012 in Sport
Gaston Ramirez
Gaston Ramirez looks set to continue to have no fixed position to call his own.
The £12m man was used on the left, the right and in behind Rickie Lambert as Saints battled to a point at Fulham.
There is an increasing clamour for Ramirez to be given a run of games in the hole off of Lambert where he has looked most effective.
However, Adkins hinted he will continue to mix and match.
“We brought Gaston in in the summer and it takes a bit of time to adjust, but he’s got undoubted ability and we have to get him on the ball to show everyone the talent he has got,” he said.
“We can talk about trying to find a situation to effect the game.
“Gaston can play behind Rickie, he can play on the left wing, he can play on the right.
“At stages in the game you want to effect the game and get players in the game.
“Defensively, Riether getting forward in the first half hour gave us a little bit of an issue and probably led to the goal where Gaston wasn’t able to track him as he got down the wing.
“I changed him and Jason Puncheon over from a defensive point of view and that’s nullified the attacking threat of Riether and got us in the game a bit more.
“We wanted to play Steven Davis in off of Rickie to utilise the football and in the end I put Gaston in behind Rickie as well.
“You are forever making decisions to change things around to try and give yourselves an opportunity to win it.”
Saints did look a more threatening attacking prospect when Ramirez was moved into the hole behind Lambert at Fulham but when asked if he had decided on the best position for his star man Adkins replied: “Get him on the football. It’s one of them.
“He plays on the left hand side for Uruguay and with Adam being out for the last couple of games we’ve utilised him in that position.
“Again he can play as we have utilised him in behind Rickie.”

Yes there was this small time club to the east we could have brought it with that money and made it our reserve team. What you really hate is the fact your poxy little club could have been saved with that money but instead we took a chance on a South American who I think ultimately will become the reason why we stay up this year. Also helps that some of the other teams down the bottom with us are shocking

I thought after a poor first half we battled back well.
Two things though,
1) Why do we insist on putting ourselves under pressure by always passing the ball around at the back, sometimes it is prudent to get the ball forward quicker.
and 2) why is we refuse to shoot a bit sooner?.
Adkins said that we like to play football out from the back , true but not all of the time.
I thought the fans were great yesterday, there were the odd groans but the majority got everyone singing and supporting the team.
Did anyone else notice how Guly just walked off the pitch without waving to the fans at the end ?

I don't know yet. We have seen glimpses of his potential, but the injury didn't help. £12m? How many expensive players have become folk heroes straight away? I am hoping that as playing conditions and familiarity with his team mates improve, will see him blossom and shine, jury is still out whether we will get our money worth. Enough profanities, something is bugging me, look teams around us are slipping up like skates chasing fivers on an iceflow...and we are NOT capitalizng...
...in short other teams are having a mare and we are not gaining traction...
..my concern is we just are not good when the pressure is on and make howlers...
...last year as promotion dawned we almost blew it and we WERE the best team in the league..
From that immortal film Cool Hand Luke...." Luke ie the team has got to get it's mind right, what we have here is failure to comminicade" (that's how the warden said it)...
For me it is a mental thing...we are not up to speed in this department and panic, Mufco, the old LFC, just grind teams down...
LFC beat us to the title in I think 82 or 84...they scored the winning goal in the last ten minutes of HALF there home matches..just kept plugging away eventually the OTHER team cracked, with us it is the other way around..
....mindset not talent is at fault here.

Guly carries a weight on his shoulders due to some of our most fickle fans. I only hope he can handle it and prove himself capable at this level.

Recently the DE did a report on how NA asked players what was going wrong. This can be looked at in 2 ways.
1) He is an inclusive manager who likes his players to think, work together and come up with solutions, bonding the team together
2) He is a clueless manager who is so desperate to find the answers he consults his players to find out
No doubt, as a positive thinker, you will go for No1 but both arguments have merit and substance. To be objective you must see the stars and the mud.

The rest are doing OK, Fonte and Yoshi have really improved, Luke is fantastic and Nat C. also, but they never know if KD will catch, punch, drop or bungle it.
Punch is turning out a cracker and apart from losing Lala the future is bright for Red and White.
But we do need a quality keeper and cover for Luke and the centre halves.
Hopefully another point against Stoke and then revenge against the Gooners after Kelvins horror show at the Emirates.

My colours and the tone of my previous posts have not changed so you will know that I like and admire NA very much but believe he lacks tactical and technical ability. Please give me the grace to know that I would never call him clueless. I haven't called for his head as we owe him time to get things right. I hope he learns but haven't seen much evidence of this. For example: (The mud) He insists on playing the same style of football even to the point that he plays players out of position to accomplish it. This, imo, weakens the side, makes us predictable and one dimensional hence we are not free scoring as we were. We have been worked out.
(The stars) Our defence has worked hard and have all stepped up as a unit and all credit to them and NA. We are not leaking goals as we were!
I don't doubt your support, Os, it is quite obvious and you are to be commended for it but please don't doubt mine because I am more critical and see things differently. I can assure you I am no less a supporter than you are.

When a small premier club spends a lot of money on one player understandably the fans get carried away with themselves but come on seriously £12m for a player who looks average at best was money wasted and a chance missed of bringing in a couple of proven quality players for the same money.

We have more gems to come and I'd like to see JWP playing Saturday as he is a real fighter and make no mistake we will be in a fight against Stoke.
I'd have a bit more faith in NA if he mixed up the play for a bit. I would have taken Davis off, shifted Gaston to the middle where he's best and put Fox on the left wing to get direct and pump balls into the box. Rickie is lethal in the box but we hardly see him there! He hangs outside waiting to lay the ball off but as we don't penetrate down the wings and pull them out of position, the box is full of defenders waiting. No coincidence that we don't get penalties! As I've said before, the fancy football is great to watch but we don't have enough depth to sustain it and should concentrate on winning regardless. Play players where they're strongest.
Believe me if NA gets wise and starts to frustrate teams and collect points, nobody will be happier than me. I want him to succeed. Above all though, I want us to succeed. It's exciting though isn't it?

Recently the DE did a report on how NA asked players what was going wrong. This can be looked at in 2 ways.
1) He is an inclusive manager who likes his players to think, work together and come up with solutions, bonding the team together
2) He is a clueless manager who is so desperate to find the answers he consults his players to find out
No doubt, as a positive thinker, you will go for No1 but both arguments have merit and substance. To be objective you must see the stars and the mud.
STID
I didn't advocate either position but merely pointed out that there is more than one perspective on every matter and that it all has merit.
So I wouldn't have people believe anything thankyou very much and would suggest you refrain from jumping down throats unecessarily. I did not suggest it was misguided loyalty either. Please read the post as is, without misinterpretation.
STID
STID

In other news, I'm reading that NA is holding KD at fault for Fulham's goal. Yet another keeper for the January window then?
Kd has been very loyal granted but I'm sure he wouldn't expect a place on the back of that. He has a couple of years left and he would be a credit to a lower league team, we need some one to take no1 spot and improve gazza. It's survival of the fittest and they get well paid (and fed at training ground) no time for sentiment.
Not sure if Robinson is the answer but will see what develops there. I agree with Adkins he was at fault!

A centre half in the killer mould and an experienced proven goal keeper a must. Need to off load more, depending who we bring in but there are definates such as Barnard and Hammond that need to be off the pay role permanent.

A lot more outs than in in window.
You'll remember that many fans were beying out for a signing at the time ;O)

We will be bottom three after arsenal as a result, but we will have chances quickly after that against villa away on the 12th and Wigan away on feb 2 (revenge?) and Newcastle away on feb 23 (the double on pardew!) which should be enough to see us at 17th by end of feb.
The game in hand with Chelski, plus the home games to man city and Everton are all write-offs, so those are games to enjoy.
If all goes to script, we can pretty much seal our fate with the home game against qpr on march 2.

And Uruguay languish at 16th in the world football rankings this month, down five places, despite having a golden generation of footballers that comes around once in a lifetime at best.
Even England are 6th (despite not playing sir rickie), and Uruguay languish behind he mighty Switzerland, Ecuador, Ivory Coast and Mexico. The only reason the coach at Uruguay hasn't been taken to task is that brazil are rated only the 18th best club in world ramnkings these days (maybe Guly has a chance after all), which taken pressure off all the other latin nations.

England are well over rated.. boring and over coached and lack management because of big head players and poncie big bossess.
Nigel is a breath of fresh air in football and gaston can play where he likes.. it reminds me of the school play ground.. two best out front first and they pick it from there.

I have posted that I am concerned about the Goalkeeping situation - and if we are relegated this is an area that we could have done something about.
Gazza gave away 4 points vs Swansea and Norwich and Kelvin gave away 2 points on Saturday.
A good Keeper get you 10 points extra a Season - We don't have that.
This is not the blame game - this is where we need to improve to remain in the Premiership.
You could argue that the Defence has cost lots of points and the way we played in the first 8 games. This area has been greatly improved and if you the Club buy a Top Quality Centre Half in the January Window - this will continue to strengthen the Team.
There are further improvements needed to our developing Team. Until the penalty yesterday and despite all the pressure - I could not see the MIGHTY SAINTS scoring yesterday. J Rod was a Top Player last season and playing him out of position this Season and the Step up has meant he has not had the success.
I don't agree that we should lose the plot against Arsenal. Bradford kept them at bay for 70 minutes where they did not have a shot on Target - why not THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.
WE OWE ARSENAL - and nothing would please me more than the 1-0 WIN to the Saints.
We have the Second Half of the Season to look forward to - but without a Top Keeper we will have to FIGHT to the final day or be relegated.
BETTER to get the reality check now and start the FIGHT than sit with rose coloured glasses until the final few games.
ALL THE SUPPORTERS need to get behind the Team. The Passion in League One and the Championship is not as intense in our Premiership Games and without good or winning football it creates a flat atmosphere.
I don't enjoy or go to games to lose and will not write off the Team against Everton or Chelsea or Man City.

I'm looking forward to the games against arsenal, Everton and city at home, because on our day we can give any one of them a game.
If the pressure is off a bit and the crowd bring the atmosphere, we might even nick some points.

On gaston, he really doesn't look good to me on the left - his close control and trickery have made him look totally lethal inside behind Lambo when he's played there.
He scares the bejesus out of lumbering center halves when he starts moving around with the ball in the box but full backs are better equipped against him.
