Saints drop to 18th after today's results. Reaction to follow on the website later...
4:54pm
FULL-TIME: Stoke 3 Saints 3
4:53pm
GOAL: Stoke 3 Saints 3 (Cameron Jerome 90): Jerome unleashes a stunning strike from 25 yards that cannons in off the underside of the bar. Astonishing strike.
4:32pm
RED CARD (71 mins): Stoke are reduced to ten men after Steven Nzonzi is shown a red card for a late tackle on Jack Cork.
4:29pm
PENALTY APPEAL (68 mins): Saints are very fortunate to escape after Jose Fonte appears to handle in the area. Mark Clattenburg waves play on, however.
4:27pm
GOAL Stoke 2 Saints 3 (Upson 67): Saints pay for Guly's miss, as Upson sweeps home after Saints fail to clear a corner.
4:26pm
CHANCE (66 mins): Lambert slips in Rodriguez, but Begovic saves from him with his feet. The ball drops to Guly, who has an open goal, but he lashes his shot wide.
4:23pm
CHANCE (63 mins): Jay Rodriguez gets to Jack Cork's through ball before Asmir Begovic. He goes round the Stoke keeper, but has his shot blocked by Robert Huth.
3:50pm
HALF-TIME: Stoke 1 Saints 3
3:42pm
Apologies for the delay in updates. Stoke's notoriously poor internet access has struck.
3:41pm
GOAL: Stoke 1 Saints 3 (Wilkinson og 36): Puncheon's cross from the right is nodded down by Lambert and turned into his own net by Wilkinson under pressure from Rodriguez.
3:40pm
GOAL: Stoke 1 Saints 2 (Jay Rodriguez 24): Rickie Lambert puts in a cross from the right. Robert Huth stretches out a leg to try and clear it, but diverts the ball against the bar. The rebound falls kindly to Jay Rodriguez, who gets his reward for following in and converts from close range.
3:19pm
GOAL: Stoke 1 Saints 1 (Kenwyne Jones 16): Ryan Shotton nutmegs Luke Shaw and delivers a low ball that Kenwyne Jones sublimely backheels/flicks across goal to equalise against his former club.
3:15pm
Former Saints defender Ken Jones has died. For more click here
http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/10131721.Former_Saints_defender_dies/
3:14pm
CHANCE (12 mins): Kenwyne Jones should have equalised against his former club almost immediately, as Steven Nzonzi's deflected shot gifts him the ball six yards out, but he scuffs his effort wide as Kelvin Davis races from his goal to charge him down.
3:13pm
GOAL: Stoke 0 Saints 1 (Lambert 10): Guly do Prado gets the ball on the left and delivers a beautiful in-swinging cross to the far post, which Rickie Lambert races in to side-foot home.
2:57pm
The teams are out here at the Britannia Stadium. Saints in their yellow strip this afternoon. Kick-off just a few moments away now. We will have updates here for you throughout the match.
2:38pm
Stoke manager Tony Pulis oversaw a 3-1 Boxing Day victory over Liverpool at the Britannia Stadium, but believes today’s fixture against Saints could be an even harder prospect:
In many respects the Southampton game will be the toughest of the two because of the raised expectations. Southampton are giving it a good go and they will be a big challenge for us, especially if we are not up for the game. The other night was tremendous for everyone, and the players deserved their praise for the wonderful effort they put in. But that is gone and now we have to raise ourselves for another challenge.
Tony Pulis
2:35pm
I remember playing against Stoke when Tony was in charge when we were at Scunthorpe. They’ve come a long way, they’ve stabilised in the Premier League, they know what they’re about, they work hard, but they can play football as well. People have got this stigma that maybe it’s a long ball game. It’s effective football, but they do play some good football as well. They’re on a good run of form. It’s a game we should look forward to, not be fearful of. The Britannia Stadium is notoriously very loud, but we’ve got to go there full of confidence ourselves. We’ve got to go there with belief. They don’t concede that many goals, so we’ve got to be bright to give ourselves opportunities to score goals as well.
Saints manager Nigel Adkins
2:26pm
2:25pm
Apologies for the lack of build-up on today's blog. Heavy traffic on the way to Stoke meant a late arrival at the ground.
2:25pm
Three changes for Saints this afternoon. Nathaniel Clyne misses out, meaning Jos Hooiveld is drafted into the back four, with Maya Yoshida going into the right back position. Guly do Prado comes in for Gaston Ramirez on the left of midfield, while Jay Rodriguez replaces Steven Davis and is likely to partner Rickie Lambert in attack.
2:23pm
THE LINE-UPS:
STOKE: Begovic, Shotton, Huth, Upson, Wilkinson, Kightly, Whelan, Nzonzi, Etherington, Walters, Jones.
Subs: Sorensen, Palacios, Owen, Adam, Whitehead, Crouch, Jerome.
SAINTS: Davis; Yoshida, Fonte, Hooiveld, Shaw; Puncheon, Cork, Schneiderlin, Guly; Rodriguez, Lambert.
Subs: Boruc, Richardson, Fox, S Davis, De Ridder, Ramirez, Mayuka.
Referee: M Clattenburg.
12:47pm
Stoke have defenders Ryan Shawcross and Geoff Cameron suspended which means likely calls ups for Matthew Upson and Ryan Shotton.
12:37pm
Adam Lallana remains out injured but otherwise Nigel Adkins is expected to have a fully fit squad to choose from.
12:33pm
Welcome to the Daily Echo's coverage of Stoke v Saints.
Saints are hoping to build on their point at Fulham but Maya Yoshida admits it will be tough against a bouyant Stoke side who are yet to lose at home this season. "It will be a really, really tough game I think," the Japan international said. "Stoke have not lost a home game this season. "They have many, many tall guys so it will be a more physical game. "We have to give away less free-kicks, corner kicks and deep throw-ins otherwise they will put many, many long balls in the box. We have to think about this. "Of course every time I want to win a game but this time it would be really nice because they haven't lost a home game (for a long time)."

I just hope it's Jay on the left and Guly behind Rickie. Either way, I'd have preferred Fox in front of Shaw today.
As for the defence, is that Jos or Yosh at RB. If no Clyne, why no Richardson? Are both injured?
Of course, it'll work a treat and doubters like me will be proved wrong. Here's hoping .....

Shame Nat Clyne got a knock on Boxing Day. Yoshi expected RB with Jos next to Jose. I wish em luck especially Jayrod.. Would love a Brace to lift his cockiness... he is well capable and due some scoring action.
I'm most worried about Jos.. if he gives away a pen with a clumsy effort from behind I'd want him gone! No pressure of anything lol I hope he nods a couple in!

Yoshida is a nightmare at right back as evidenced on video. I can only assume that Clyne and Richardson are injured. Guly for Ramirez is another annoying experiment. I hope we win, but Adkins would appear to be doing his best to trash things again, imo.

I have a feeling we'll be rather direct in our play today. Maybe the conditions don't suit pretty football.

That said: One for Adkins to analyse: Why Stoke were able to absolutely terrify us with 10 men when we were playing 5 at the back?
On the positives, we scored three against the meanest defense on the league at home! We did not completely capitulate. Fonte was not done for his handball. Back in the bottom three but proud to support Saints!

Hopefully, Adkins will learn not to go negative when the team's winning against ten men. His substitutions and tactics cost us two points, yet again. Taking Punch off was madness. The best form of defence is always attack.

At least the chairman can be in no doubt that the strength of our squad and particularly the defence needs strengthening.
I feared we'd be adrift at this point, but we are very much in the battle.
Now let's make some sensible defensive additions early and bed them in during January. That gives us a very good fighting chance, which is what we'd have asked for realistically at the beginning of the season.

Gutted we didn't get all three points after being 3-1 up but happy we can now all be positive in the fact that we can score against anyone and especially away from home.
We will be on the end of similar results that will be in our favour in games to come and we'll also surprise a few sides in the second half of the season.
We're slowly getting therein my honest opinion and there isn't an easy game in the PL which other sides will find out when they play us in the new year.
There are 4 or 5 sides in this league that seem to be struggling and not scoring as much as us.
i reckon we'll do ok in the run in as long as we can pick up home wins to go with the away draws along the way.
It's easy to dwell on negatives but let's not ignore the positives and forget where we were a couple of seasons ago.
It could be worse we could be losing at home to Crawley and Yeovil in two home games on the trot......

Our best bet is to look to Europe and potentially use our links in Scandinavia to bring in no nonsense, low ego, low wage quality defenders, plus an experienced premier league goal keeper that's currently on the bench, possibly Sorensen or Given.

Leaving Guly aside (From what I can tell from the radio he played well). It looks like we could not keep possesion and played too deep when we let in the second goal. Have not defended a lead so poorly for a while.

Our best bet is to look to Europe and potentially use our links in Scandinavia to bring in no nonsense, low ego, low wage quality defenders, plus an experienced premier league goal keeper that's currently on the bench, possibly Sorensen or Given.
We ground out another result today. I predicted 2-2 with them getting a player sent off, but this would have been a great result for any other team outside the top four.

Good luck in the courts by the way.

JohnItaly wrote:Yes John it is a fine line and a bit of quality is needed we make more chances than at least 12 others in this league however I guarantee our missed chances are the highest or very close.....hence my annoyance when 'class' players keep missing..
Whilst like most fans I would have taken a draw with Stoke at the start, what I find concerning is the number of points Saints have dropped from winning positions - am sure someone knows. I remain a fan of Nigel Adkins but I am concerned about his tactical ability to close out a game. The dividing line between success and failure is very narrow and if this had been the last game of the season all those lost points would have proved fatal - and they still might.
On a bright note we only conceded 3...have always said our defence will not save us....taking our chances when they fall would.

Velleity wrote:Sharp was our top scorer in pre-season. Presumably, he was part of the PremPlan when we bought him in January 2012 - either that or the strategy in buying him was incompetent . He lacks pace but makes up for it by being a Jimmy Greaves type of goal-scorer. I'd like to have seen him given a chance in the Prem..
Littleton-Saint wrote:I was saying this at the end of last season: Sharp is simply not quick enough for the Premiership.
Meanwhile, Billy Sharp scores again - an own goal for Saints methinks.
I don't care if he ends up as Forest's top scorer; that's in the Championship. He'd not even have been on the bench by now if he was still with us.
Why is that incompetent? That sounds like excellent management to me.

Hurts losing the 3 points, and seeing us back in the bottom three. I hope we strengthen during January, but I am with those who feel that maybe a poacher with a bit of pace may be top of the list.
slugger wrote:According to Uncle Dave, Guly played well. As well as his cross another noptable point was when he put out another excellent defensive ball up to Lambert from which we almost scored This was when our backs were against the wall.

Watched on stream....2 goal lead against 10 men and Stoke were rubbish we just kept giving the ball away AGAIN......
...had we gone for it with their defence missing we would, should and could have 3 incredibly important points in the bag....
...Wigan went above us and in the end whose fault.
I am seething because at the end of the season if we are relegated i will not blame the howlers but the misses...
...which brings me rather neatly to Guly, every club has a player that the fans just will not warm to, sometimes incredibly unfairly, sometimes their efforts or lack of, or PROMISE leave the supporters very annoyed...
...I can NOW put my finger on it with Guly, even though he tried somehow he is a player we EXPECT to deliver and in our teams time of need he just fails...
...Pmuff away last season a pathetic no balls head at the ball allowed our bitter rivals to draw, this season on two occassions he could have scored what for a quality player (not average) easy chances, today the ball came back quick to him but he was unmarked and open goal......1-4 game over.
...in short he is one of those players you expect to deliver and in critical situations does not time and time again.
Note he tried today no question but he always falls slightly short...we can forgive lesser players but he flatters to deceive...
...too many times now, as you can tell I am really peed off and I feel that he is the link that consistantly blows chances that so called quality players should finish...
If he had scored the winner his rating may have edged up from OK to played well almost, Well if it was not Guly!!!! Total garbage booooooooo!!
Leaving Guly aside (From what I can tell from the radio he played well). It looks like we could not keep possesion and played too deep when we let in the second goal. Have not defended a lead so poorly for a while.

I dont blame any player for this result, 1st half was good. What I saw the second half was some sort of crazy ping pong with players like urghhh get that white round thing away from me I dont like it.
What I dont like is the fact that the manager didnt seem to find any way to calm it down and stress the fact that we were winning the game.
Unless that ball was coated in goose fat at half time Kelvin has got some serious issues with catching a ball, come on please put Boruc in goal and stick with him, we cant keep throwing games away with soft goals.
Do tend to agree about Adkins decision making or lack of it, keeper in transfer window has got to be priority. Using 3 and not knowing out of the 2 which is the better (or worse) is a problem. A good keeper breeds confidence in the defence.
