I agree with you to an extent and that's coming from someone who is close with Adkins' family. Appalling to see us try and sit out the game by bringing on worse and more defensive players. With that lead and Stoke having ten men all we needed was to bring on a fast attacking player in place of Lambert and we would have kept them defending in their own half. In fairness I think it was fantastic that the players managed to get us a point considering those tactical changes. I think we need to get rid of Andy Crosby as he is not the brightest of sparks and bring in someone who has more of a tactical understanding, unfortunately he comes as a package with Nigel and that's not very likely to happen. Nigel is a great motivator but not a tactician. Crosby just talks too much and makes faces

It seems that NA rewards mediocrity by continuously playing players who are not and never will be premier league quality!

The time had come for NA to pack up his tent and leave. He's had his chance in the top flight and has failed. Saints will be relegated and we need somewhat at the helm who is tactically aware and knowledgable and who's not frightened to make decisions for fear of upsetting people!

Guly,What do you think it is? 1st time I saw him my opinion wasn't positive but to be honest I'm on the fence and feel there is something he could bring to the team.
I don't think he's a wing player, more of a typical no10, but so is lambert and Ramirez IMO, and I know who'd I'd rather have.

From what I heard Yeovil dominated the first half, Portmouth made a valiant come back in the second half, star striker was yellow carded and taken off as he is now suspended for the Swindon, game leaving them desperately short of players, as one of them is also a Swindon loanee and can't play, desperate times, not that I am too bothered, but you did ask.

Wise after the event is easy. At 1500 most of us would have been surprised/alarmed at the selection. By 1510 most would have been surprised at the tactics. Before half time, the selection and the tactics, both a big change in direction, were obviously genius at work. Well done NA.

Gully played well, both in attack and in defence, including helping to give Shaw better cover than he has had in most games this season. Just about all the Stoke attack came down their right and it wasn’t until late on that they started to get lots of balls in from that wing. But for a late glorious long range strike we would have won and the brave selection and tactics would have, rightly, been seen as a great piece of management.

We didn’t ‘throw it away’ – Stoke took the win from us and deserve a lot of credit – there are two teams on the pitch.

We definitely did need to go with three centre halves when Crouch came on – Richardson on was the right substitution. All three substitutions were perfectly sensible at the time they were made although the others could be argued with the benefit if hindsight.


We should have reverted to our passing game when in possession once they went down to 10 men – that’s the only way to make it an advantage. Not sure if it was the players or the management team’s fault that we kept to the same tactics that worked well until then.

But overall it was a brave piece of management and well executed by the players for most of the game. As always, it’s a fine dividing line – Guly scores and we would have been home and dry at 4-1. He misses and they go up the other end and score.

I thought KD didn’t punch enough at the near post against Jones when and crosses came in from their right – too much flapping at it - but otherwise the defence did OK. Guly and Cork played well, as did Lambert in the first half.

The bench was peculiar what the hell was Disk Ridder there again was it because he threw his toys out the pram because he was left out on Boxing Day? Why does NA persist with Davis to the exclusion of JWP?

It seems that NA rewards mediocrity by continuously playing players who are not and never will be premier league quality!

The time had come for NA to pack up his tent and leave. He's had his chance in the top flight and has failed. Saints will be relegated and we need somewhat at the helm who is tactically aware and knowledgable and who's not frightened to make decisions for fear of upsetting people!

From what I heard Yeovil dominated the first half, Portmouth made a valiant come back in the second half, star striker was yellow carded and taken off as he is now suspended for the Swindon, game leaving them desperately short of players, as one of them is also a Swindon loanee and can't play, desperate times, not that I am too bothered, but you did ask.

Maybe you heard from sainlysole - he said he was at the match.

Wise after the event is easy. At 1500 most of us would have been surprised/alarmed at the selection. By 1510 most would have been surprised at the tactics. Before half time, the selection and the tactics, both a big change in direction, were obviously genius at work. Well done NA.

Gully played well, both in attack and in defence, including helping to give Shaw better cover than he has had in most games this season. Just about all the Stoke attack came down their right and it wasn’t until late on that they started to get lots of balls in from that wing. But for a late glorious long range strike we would have won and the brave selection and tactics would have, rightly, been seen as a great piece of management.

We didn’t ‘throw it away’ – Stoke took the win from us and deserve a lot of credit – there are two teams on the pitch.

We definitely did need to go with three centre halves when Crouch came on – Richardson on was the right substitution. All three substitutions were perfectly sensible at the time they were made although the others could be argued with the benefit if hindsight.


We should have reverted to our passing game when in possession once they went down to 10 men – that’s the only way to make it an advantage. Not sure if it was the players or the management team’s fault that we kept to the same tactics that worked well until then.

But overall it was a brave piece of management and well executed by the players for most of the game. As always, it’s a fine dividing line – Guly scores and we would have been home and dry at 4-1. He misses and they go up the other end and score.

I thought KD didn’t punch enough at the near post against Jones when and crosses came in from their right – too much flapping at it - but otherwise the defence did OK. Guly and Cork played well, as did Lambert in the first half.

We had what was widely regarded as the most difficult start to the season for any team - and we forced the top sides in the Premiership to come from behind to beat us. The Arsenal match was horrible - but that happens to every team once in a while. Our manager despite all the crap thrown at him has remained positive and upbeat - why? BECAUSE THAT IS HIS JOB. He needs to motivate those players and keep them coming back to the pitch no matter what and he's doing a fantastic job of it. Would you prefer he stand there like Mark Hughes and be negative? I guarantee you that if he did that we would be at the bottom of the table with QPR.
It's all very well for you armchair managers to sit there and childishly demand his head when the result doesn't go the way you want it to go, but at the end of the day this manager is giving Southampton everything and making sure that his team hear good positive things no matter what the result. And you can't see why that is a good thing and why that means he is doing a good job then you are a bloody fool.

Took you long enough. I have no problem watching Championship football, if that is what fate decides, I also won't be jumping off the Itchen Bridge if it happens. My support for Nigel Adkins remains, whatever, if he has the misfortune to be the victim of another mindless Managerial sacking, I will support whoever is appointed. That's football and I am loving it and suffering at the same time. I don't think we will be relegated, but I haven't got a crystal ball, and fate can be unfair at times. thanks for that, if we had played this game earlier in the season you would have stuffed us. we have found a bit more grit and determination recently. to be fair i think either team could have won today, but i would have taken a point before the game and see it as a point gained not 2 lost.
what some of our newer fans forget when they moan at NA is the fact that it was his team that he picked and his tactics that put us in such a good position. even some of the `big teams` would be happy with a draw at stoke, even with 10 men.
NA showed some real courage to change the team around and play a different game today, and it nearly worked.
our moaners have been boooing guly at home games and saying that jrod is a waste of money, yet they were 2 of our better players today, but the moaners wont see that. they moan when NA subbs rickie, and today moan because he didnt! i do wish some of our `fans` would remember that we are not mancity or chelsea, we are not going to win every game. and a point against stoke away from home is a good point, regardless of being 3-1 up against 10 men.
good luck for the rest of the season and hope you can beat all of the teams around us but lose to us at our place.

Spot on as well.

Some of our new fans seem to think we have the god given right to expect more. If you support Man U or Man City then coming second is disappointing. If you support Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or Spurs not making the Champions League is disappointing. The likes of Stoke and Wigan have established themselves in the top flight and they look to beat newly promoted teams like ourselves.

There are 19 other clubs, 19 other chairmen and managers, 19 other sets of fans who want more - it's time for some realism.

In the 3 years since Admin we have won the JPT and had back to back promotions. It has been done before but it's rare and an amazing achievement.

We tried the managerial merry go round before, many times, and it didn't work then. Let's try stability - it's worth a go as our greatest period came during such a spell as did those of other teams.

Gully played well but missed the chance to seal it. Towards the end we were under the cosh and Nige stiffened it up but a wonder strike levelled it. He needs to motivate those players and keep them coming back to the pitch no matter what and he's doing a fantastic job of it. Would you prefer he stand there like Mark Hughes and be negative? I guarantee you that if he did that we would be at the bottom of the table with QPR.
It's all very well for you armchair managers to sit there and childishly demand his head when the result doesn't go the way you want it to go, but at the end of the day this manager is giving Southampton everything and making sure that his team hear good positive things no matter what the result. And you can't see why that is a good thing and why that means he is doing a good job then you are a bloody fool.

big tick from me Gramps.. I was up all night worried and hoping for a point. I loved every minute of a game that had everything. In the end I went to bed heart broken with the loss of the lead but very happy and proud with the point.. Loved the game which did the sport credit in every way - a ding dong battle. We were very very lucky with the ref. Stoke were immense with KJ playing out of his skin and Luke plain as day knackered (played his big heart out) twice missing the ball had to be replaced by Fox Then with them hoofing it to bean-pole Crouchy and Punch (looking tired) in the second half Richardson was a sensible option to me. Yes the whole of the league manage 2 goals at Britannia (a a cup goal I think) until we came along with the best fans in the country and get 3. Well Done Saints well done as all of you played your hearts out.. and the fans sang their's out too. Now celebrate football and put the whining to bed. You and I know t won't happen as far as the centre backs are concerned they should have been in place at the begining of the season. The problem with Cortee is that he thinks he knows better - he doesn't!!!!!!!

Mmmmm. Seems like you would make a much better manager than NA. Of course the ball came off the bar and he was there to put it in. And if he hadn't been hassling the defender we wouldn't have got the third. It doesn't matter how they go in as long as they do. Ramirez is a quality player who has moved here from abroad and is still adjusting. There are currently rumours about Italian teams wanting him back. If he goes it'll be for more than 12 million. We won't be getting all the players you think we need. There isn't a bottomless pit of money. We need to shift out some Championship players first and that is not easy because they are on better money than most Championhip sides will pay. That's the price we have to pay for being too big a club for any league bar the Prem. NA has done an unbelievable job with us. Just look at the way Fergie started at Munure. Nige is a gem and we should keep him at all costs. Nice bloke too.

Guly and jrod both played well yesterday and worked hard you must of watched game with stevie wonders glasses on , guly was in for his height and he headed plenty of corners and throw ins , not bad for someone who gets booed by his own supporters which is nothing short of disgraceful, should of scored granted but his chance was not at easy as jones, vaz te or adebayer after watching the last 2 on match of the day

if you think that of Guly and Rodriguez then you must have very low expectations of what makes a good football player. They are awful players and do not belong in this league probably Championship or even league one!

Yes you are mistaken. We were 3 - 2 up when they went down to 10 men.
What do you guys want - a negative manager? That would really help the players feel confident. If you guys ever watch any other results instead of Pompey's you would know that Stoke put Liverpool to the sword after conceding the first goal. We have only lost 2 of the last 9. I think we all realise that relegation is a real possibility , i'd be as gutted as anyone , it won't stop me from supporting though

OK Guly missed a sitter.He also started the ball rolling with an inch perfect cross to SRL. Some guy earlier said J Rod was unnoticeable. He must have fallen asleep for the second and third. Im with Stroppy. We've slowly improved and now have a great chance of staying in this league. Bring on 2013. The rise of the Saints and the demise of the Skunts.

Guly and Rodriguez are poor players. Guly put a good cross in for Lambert to score apart from that he did nothing apart from miss an open goal!! Rodriguez ran around with no end product! He scored a goal but the ball had come off the bar and he tapped it in! How people get excited over that is beyond me!!!!!! We need a good striker who's prepared to graft. We need two quality centre backs a left back to cover Shaw who's looking tired a pacey left winger as Lallana is out until late February / March and a decent quality goalkeeper. Acquire these and get a manager who is tactically aware and will play players for the right reasons rather than trying to keep them happy then Saints may survive.

Oh yes get rid of the biggest waste of money and drain on the coffers - Ramirez!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two strikers (Guly/Rodriguez)
Two centre backs (both quality)
Left back
Left Winger (must be pacey)
Goalkeeper (must be good)
Manager

I hope Cortese's reading this and takes immediate action. That list will keep him busy.

You and I know t won't happen as far as the centre backs are concerned they should have been in place at the begining of the season. The problem with Cortee is that he thinks he knows better - he doesn't!!!!!!!

The bench was peculiar what the hell was Disk Ridder there again was it because he threw his toys out the pram because he was left out on Boxing Day? Why does NA persist with Davis to the exclusion of JWP?

It seems that NA rewards mediocrity by continuously playing players who are not and never will be premier league quality!

The time had come for NA to pack up his tent and leave. He's had his chance in the top flight and has failed. Saints will be relegated and we need somewhat at the helm who is tactically aware and knowledgable and who's not frightened to make decisions for fear of upsetting people!

We had what was widely regarded as the most difficult start to the season for any team - and we forced the top sides in the Premiership to come from behind to beat us. The Arsenal match was horrible - but that happens to every team once in a while. Our manager despite all the crap thrown at him has remained positive and upbeat - why? BECAUSE THAT IS HIS JOB. He needs to motivate those players and keep them coming back to the pitch no matter what and he's doing a fantastic job of it. Would you prefer he stand there like Mark Hughes and be negative? I guarantee you that if he did that we would be at the bottom of the table with QPR.
It's all very well for you armchair managers to sit there and childishly demand his head when the result doesn't go the way you want it to go, but at the end of the day this manager is giving Southampton everything and making sure that his team hear good positive things no matter what the result. And you can't see why that is a good thing and why that means he is doing a good job then you are a bloody fool.

Watching the game on the other side of the world, I could sense the whole team deteriorating into a state of blind panic - no doubt it was very clear to the Stoke players as well. It was only a matter of time before the Stoke psychological dominance would be translated into goals - I think ultimately they were unlucky not to win the game.

In reflection, I view Stoke as the team that Saints should aspire to emulate in the short term. There are clear similarities between the skill levels of the respective players - however Stoke has demonstrated this season that it is the toughest team in the Prem to be dominated over for 90 minutes.

So where to from here for the Saints? Clearly for this season the squad can not be dramatically improved either in the personnel or in its overall skill levels. Other than perhaps a fit Adam Lallana, I don't believe there is a player who would be an automatic choice on the first team sheet for most of the other Prem clubs.

Nigel Adkins has an interesting challenge ahead of him and for my part his success will not be judged on whether he is able to prevent relegation this season with the present squad, but rather can he instill a consistent self belief and team spirit within the players that will prevent the sort of second half disaster that happened at Stoke.
