I READ with interest the article in the Boxing Day edition about another council executive taking redundancy.

The article went on to tell us that John Rutherford, Assistant Director for Customer Services, will be joining Bolton Council's longest serving director Steve Arnfield.

The council takes pride in telling us these redundancies will save the council £520,000 over the next two years. My concern is just how much will the total redundancy package cost Bolton Council?

I think it will be a very large chunk of money, which will effectively cancel out the savings mentioned.

However, what puzzled me most was that the article tells us there was, originally seven directors in 2009, now down to three, but that there was originally 32 assistant directors, now down to 14.

Can somebody help explain how, originally, the seven directors needed 32 assistants and that the remaining three directors will only have 14 assistant directors? The numbers just don’t add up. Three people needing 14 assistants, or even the original seven directors needed 32 assistants!
