Morgan: Arsenal humiliation has made us stronger
7:20am Tuesday 1st January 2013 in Sport
Morgan Schneiderlin
Morgan Schneiderlin is adamant Saints’ 6-1 humiliation at Arsenal earlier this season has helped the team become mentally stronger.
Nigel Adkins’ side were ruthlessly exposed at the Emirates Stadium in September by a “perfect” Gunners performance.
Saints left north London rooted to the bottom of the table, having conceded 14 goals in their opening four matches – all defeats.
It marked the low point of a painful introduction to the Premier League, and appeared to have the potential to leave some damaging scars.
But Schneiderlin insisted the players were made stronger by the experience.
“We completely forget about it,” said Schneiderlin of the 6-1 defeat. “Twenty four hours after the game it was forgotten, and I think that helped us to be mentally stronger, because it was a tough day there.”
Saints certainly now appear to boast a far greater degree of fortitude and confidence than they did just over three months ago.
With that in mind, Schneiderlin has promised that they will present Arsene Wenger’s in-form side with a much greater test when the clubs meet at St Mary’s this evening.
“Everything they did was perfect, so now we want to bounce back and show them it was just a mistake from us,” the French midfielder said.
“We want to show them what we really can do and hopefully we can win this game.
“That’s how we can survive in this league is to win games at home.”

Got up early, and saw first sunrise of the year. Beautiful.
Let's hope it's a good omen for this evening's game! Be a tough one, but if we can get in the ball, and upset their rhythm, no reason we can't get a shock three points.

Man-marking their players and actually tackling them when we lose possession will be key requirements if we are to get a win. Can Saints concentrate and maintain their desire for 90+ minutes or will they fold like they did against ten-man Stoke? COYR, please show some true grit and earn your wages, today.

its odd cos i would of had Lee, Hammond, and Sharpe about the squad as good back up. I liked Hammond as a fighter in midfield, we will never know if he would of cut it at this level.
Adkins makes some strange decisions what with Guly etc, 9 out of 10 times would be probably released to a league 1 side at best!
great cross the other day! but has he done anything else? lol
I can see 3 new signings in this Jan window, maybe 1 centre back, and a winger. and Hooper maybe?
we need another star striker. who already does the business somewhere, Berbatov type! im not keen on mayuka, he offered nothing in the last match.
ps, going to chelsea game next week, anyone else going?

Nigel said he was going to rotate the squad, I hope he rotates KD out, otherwise against Arsenal expect at least one gifted goal.
We can win this but it will help the cause greatly if there are no GK blunders.

We need some real creative thinking for the 2nd half of the season and I've e mailed Nigel with two tips under the banner "Highs and Lows".
First, the highs. Have you noticed how those rugby players lift a player up in the air to catch the ball in the line throw ins? We need to assign two strong players to hurl Rickie into the air to meet deliberately high corners and crosses. Not even their goallie could get higher. This will completely fox Arsenal tonight.
Second, the lows. I watched a dwarf clown in the Moscow State Circus on SKY on Sunday. He was an amazing juggler of the ball with his feet and was astonishingly agile and quick. We should sign him up. He'd completely outwit the opposition and they'd miss him often as he'd be outside normal peripheral vision. He could actually nutmeg defenders by running through their legs.
I can see it now...wee Ivan unseen on the wing collects the ball and completely mesmerises three defenders who wind up fouling him. Clyne takes the free kick and Jose and Hooi lift Rickie 12 ft into the air to nod a "free header" home.
Until Adam comes back the Northam chant will be: "Our wee Ivan...makes Grumpy look sh!te."
Nige has not replied yet, but no doubt he'll be on the case.

But to be honest, how many people expected us to be anywhere but in the battle for survival?
We've just jumped 2 leagues in 2 seasons, we're in the big league again where we obviously belong, but no surprise we're in the dogfight-Basically, anyone outside of the top 8 or so are in the same boat-pushing for 40 points to be safe.
Surely we all expected and accepted it would be a hard season and that 17th would be a great achievement?
We should be aiming for the same as last time-27 years or hopefully more as a top flight team. Always a much bigger achievement to stay in the premier league than to get out of the lower leagues.
If we can get that extra bit of quality in the squad, but not too much that wll disprupt things, I'll be very happy.
Saints 17th, and QPR going down would make a great year-So other people can realise what we already know-Twitchy is far from a great manager!

We need a bigger scalp and stuffing Arsenal would be a great start to the New Year.

Littleton-saint, did you actually watch the game against stoke??. They were the team with the best home record in five of the top european football clubs!!.
Yes the fact is we were 3-1 up and drew 3-3 but we got a very valueable point. Jerome will not score another goal like he did against us to snatch an away win from us as long as he's got a hole in his arse!!. The boys were standing shoulder to shoulder repelling all that STOKE threw at us. I for one can not feel so negative on the FIRST DAY of the second half of the season. Dont you think we have made huge progress since the first day of this season.??
The club will not talk about any possible signings until pen has touched the paper. When you hear of other clubs bringng in other players and you see what players their buying with huge publicity , it makes me smile. I myself am quite happy to let the club go about their bidding behind close doors and then watch the eyebrows go up.
People are getting on to Rambo but give the boy a chance, for that is what he is, just a young boy in a strange suroundings, foriegn country trying to adjust. He needs time and then you will see just what a good buy he will be for our club.
Lighten up , give 110% support tonight and lets see just how far we have improved this season against one of the top teams in the premiership for several years now.

Not sure of the correct response to this.
Is he the real deal?
Liverpool & Everton are in the race too.
We are also rumoured to be looking at an Italian centreback , all good.

According to BBC transfer gossip we are the front runners to buy Butland.

Davide Astori and Jack Butland will surely help strengthen our Defensive set up.
Today Arsenal will come up with relentless pressure. We must counter that threat with giving them no time and space on the ball.

I guess today depends a lot on which Araenal turns up. Will it be the one that bombed out of the League Cup to Bradford or the one that stuffed Newcastle the other day?
We've got to attack them on the corners and from the wings and use the 'waddling lump' to maximum effect. This might also be the game for Rambo to make a name for himself.
2 former Saints lining up against us (again) so we'll need to score at least 3 to get maximum points today.
COYR!
