Saints teen star to face Gunners as transfer speculation mounts
LUKE Shaw is set for his toughest test yet in professional football as he comes up against former Saints youth colleague Alex Chamberlain.
The two teenagers will go head-to-head as Arsenal travel to St Mary’s for the New Year’s Day fixture this evening.
There is added spice to the fixture with the Gunners heavily linked with a January bid for 17-year-old Shaw.
It has been reported today that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will use today's Permier League clash at St Mary's to sound out Saints over a possible bid for the teen star.
It comes after Wenger has already raided the Saints academy twice in recent years for Theo Walcott and then Chamberlain.
And Wenger yesterday was happy to talk up the Saints academy for the great job they have done in the past decade in producing international standard players.
“They have done a fabulous job - you also look at Gareth Bale and what he is doing now at Tottenham,” said the Frenchman. “It is down to the quality of their scouting, the quality of their coaching and education.”
Shaw has acquitted himself superbly since breaking into the Saints side in early November.
His form has also seen him repeatedly linked with Chelsea who, co-incidentally, are also at St Mary’s this week – in Saturday’s FA Cup third round tie.
The Daily Echo recently revealed that Shaw is unlikely to be offered a long-term contract extension – and with it a more lucrative salary – until he reaches his 18th birthday, which is not until next July.
Adkins has warned clubs looking to lure away Luke Shaw or any of his other players this month.
Saints have improved greatly of late, having lost just two of their previous nine Barclays Premier League fixtures heading into today's match with Arsenal.
The north Londoners have taken Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott from the south coast club in recent years and have been linked with a move for 17-year-old academy graduate Shaw.
Manchester City and Chelsea have also reportedly shown interest in the left-back, although Adkins does not expect him to be going anywhere.
"I've not read any of the newspapers," the Saints boss said.
"I think Luke gets linked every week with Arsenal, doesn't he?
"Luke is under contract, he is playing football for us in the Premier League, which is important.
"We are not looking to let him go anywhere if anyone wants to come in for any of our players, by all means speak to the chairman. He does the deals and all the best with that."
Adkins gave a similar response when asked about Rickie Lambert's future following speculation of a January move away from St Mary's.
The Saints boss was, though, less forthcoming when asked of players arriving at St Mary's, following links to Cagliari's Davide Astori and Birmingham goalkeeper Jack Butland.
Adkins was, understandably, more concerned about this evening's encounter with Arsenal, which will see Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain return to the club.
The latter is a man Adkins knows particularly well after the winger's key role in Southampton's promotion from npower League One in 2011.
"I think he will get a fantastic reception," the Saints boss said.
"He is one of the players that came through out system.
"We are excited watching him play. We'd love him to still be at Southampton, but he is an Arsenal player now and an England international.
"I went to watch him against Reading the other night and he was exhilarating, with his acceleration to go away, a desire to get on the football. He is a joy to watch.
"I think everybody at Southampton is proud of what he is doing now.
"Everybody at the football club has had a role and a responsibility to play in Alex's development, but it is down to him as well. He is an exciting young talent."

Saints will not sell Shaw who will be a major part of our season if we are to stay in the PL. There is no significance in us waiting until he is eighteen to sign an improved contract...that is the age he has to be to sign a contract on his own. He is under a professional contract with us now (which had to be countersigned by a parent) and will be offered the normal adult contract at eighteen.

Can you really see Nicola giving a prized asset like Luke to the arse especially for £5 mil as has been suggested, as many posters have said before if you can't back the saints then don't write anything.
Take a leaf out of your colleagues book down the M27, who after all are writing about a complete basket case of a club but always manages to put a positive spin on things and not constantly trying to undermine them
For that reason one of my new years resolutions is to cancel my daily delivery of your rag so - I'm out

Obsurd as it might sound, if a blind man could read these regurgitated tripe, he would truly belief you are a gooner wrag, metaphorically speak!!
Shame on you DE, no wonder NC dose not want you around.
Lastly wenger can not handle NC and you fail to see DE that NC is no mug and will in the next couple of years take us pass the likes of the gooners and the gooners are on a slow down slide. They are most certainly not the club they were and knowing gooner fans think they are! NC has clearly said that our academy is for Southampton FC and most certainly would not let a hotter prospect than the two they have turn in to three!
Stop working constantly against Saints with your constant stream of negativity towards Southampton FC and support the Saints DE!
Be interesting if you ran a simple poll like you like to do, and simply ask Saints fans if you feel your local paper the DE is pro Saints or lets say negative Saints?

He will also be able to open a bank account in his own name, vote, own land or a house, buy alcohol and fireworks, get married and ride a motorbike over 125cc.
More worrying is the fact that he will be able, legally, to get a tattoo.I think the age limit for footballers to be able to get a tattoo should be 124.

This will need to be careful calculated revenge.
The mind games started by the Echo are not subtle. I refuse to buy the paper due to their stance against Saints. We fans do not get the service we deserve from our local paper, but we all come on here and redirect the stories ourselves.
Shame there are idiots on here who do not support Saints, do not even like football.
Luke Shaw for £5m ?
Ridiculous!
We should be asking Arsenal about buying one of their centrebacks !
Plenty of rumours on football threads showing us interested in buying quality, Echo only copy/paste one so far!

Interestingly, when one is doing well the other is doing the exact opposite. In 76 we won the cup and you went down to the fourth tier. When we recently dropped down the leagues you stole a cup and bought a few years in the Prem. So hopefully when your club is liquidised we will win the Champions League!

My suggestion is to buy a new one, frame it in a toughened glass cabinet with a massive lock, put a little signed photo of MLT on top, and count to ten every time you think about using it.
It could be the way forward.
Happy new jellicoes to you.

1 We won the cup!
2 It's not our fault we had 10 bent owners on the trot who pillaged our club, don't blame the fans!
If they had the honesty (big ask I know) to admit the two are inextricably linked then just maybe there would be some sympathy.

No worries - Luke will stay with us when he turns 18.
Look dreadful especially ones with the whole arm done. Just imagine what they will look like when they are older!
I saw a 60 year old the other day walking with two little girls and he had the tattoo tears from each eye and a cobweb on his forehead! Nearly wet myself......
