Adkins: I made right call to drop Kelvin
8:48pm Tuesday 1st January 2013 in Sport
Nigel Adkins defended his decision to drop Kelvin Davis once again and recall Artur Boruc.
The Polish stopper looked nervy on his return to the team at St Mary’s and fumbled a couple of early crosses after replacing the club captain.
It was the fifth time in just 20 Premier League games this season that Adkins has changed his number one, and it wasn’t a popular decision with some supporters.
However, he was adamant he made the call for the right reasons.
“These are the decisions you’ve got to go and make as a manager,” he reflected.
“Artur has obviously had a bit of a shaky start to the game but he’s gathered his composure and you know that’s what you’re going to get when you’ve got experienced goalkeepers in there.
“He’s been very impressive in training, his attitude has been outstanding so I’ve given him the opportunity.
“Kelvin everyone knows how much I like him, he’s top drawer.”

Boruc is a much better keeper than kelvin and Nigel knows it. He should be our number 1 from now on.

Still need a top class keeper but think this will be on next season's shopping list as Butland only 19 so one for the future if we get him
Still need a centre half and someone to take the goal pressure off Ricky

And why play Lambert for 90 minutes if he can't score! Adkins should learn to substitute his strikers if the fail to score in 70 minites of the game! This will creat competition for the strikers to work harder to maintain their place in the team! I believe MAYUKA can also be tried upfron as he's a good scorer...

Great servant but not good enough to keep Saints in Premier League.
Boruc was nervy but he settled and at least when there was a shot in the 70th minute he held on to it. His distribution improved as the game went on.

Good to see Theo and Oxo applaud Saints fans at the end last night - and the warm reception they received. That was a credit to the club - and a great advertisement for our academy which will be shining even brighter when the new infrastructure facilities open.
Once again the support last night was great - evidence again that after the tough years we went through, these are good times. Of course there's anxiety about keeping our place in the Prem, but the fear and dread we once all felt for the club's future has now been replaced by optimism and eager anticipation.

It might just be me but the players on both teams who had on those yellowy orange boots seemed to be slipping the most. What were they a new design from the manufacturers ?
If I was the manager i would be really hacked off about this as it costs us goals and scoring chances.

Good performance last night, we didn't let Arsenal play after the first 10 minutes. Shame about their goal, but again we give away too many silly free kicks in dangerous positions.

They have cost us valuable points where we should be higher up the League with Wet Spam.
Regarding the Cup - the Players do well when playing regularly - so I would put out a strong side. A morale boosting WIN would give the whole Club a lift.
That said - whose UP for VILLA AWAY and getting the WIN ....??
I was disappointed with FULHAM AWAY (apart from Kelvins Howler) that with the Tube Strike all the Saints Supporters had to go by road and that spoiled the pre-match pubs and drinking and build up to getting to the Stadium.
Artur Borac did not look that good early on in the game yesterday - but for me the jury is out - he is very calm.
There are multi millions involved with staying in the Premer League and to invest even 10 million has gotta be worth it.
This is an area we cannot skimp on. it reminds me of Wenger all those years ago when he would not invest in Quality and it cost him and the Club.
Watched the Arsenal Keeper yesterday and how the goal keeping coach drilled him yesterday and the intensity of it all - and then despaired to see how we do it.

Boruc caught everything in the warm- up he kicked everything well, too.
He must had a bang on the head in the dressing room before he came out for the game because his handling and kicking was appalling.

This would give our other two young keepers time to develope under their guidence .It's strange to be in this goalkeeping dilema, in the past this was the one position where we were usally sound.
Great game last night and unlucky not to take all three points. I went home and watched the game again and could not see much wrong with Rambo's second goal. Yoshida was kick up the painfull area from behind which should of been a penalty. Guly had to go for the ball from Theo's free kick or a certain goal would of been scored by the Arse player. Thought Boruc could have positioned himself better for the kick. Can not understand why some fans keep having a go at Guly , that guy gave our club110% in the last two games.
I think it was there for all to see just how far we have improved as a team since the start of the season. Everybody including Nigel has learnt from their mistakes at the begining and deserves a pat on the back for that.

Whatching Borruc yesterday was a mixture of emotions yes he was nervous at the start but as previous posters have said that it was encouraging to see the keeper roll the ball into midfield to turn defence into attack. I have seen most games this season and we haveoften been subject to roll the ball to full back a pasing sequence across the back four then back to keeper to go long! i know which i would rather see. Is Borruc the answer probbably not but unless he has a run inthe team we will never know but i do know when at Celtic he was regarded as one of the best keepers in Europe so why not give him a go and see what happens. Havingseen Gazza against Norwich and Kelvin against Fulham we have nothing to lose giving him a run of games.

Arsenal had one shot from Walcott on target which Boruc fumbled, he looks unfit and for me he's not the answer.
Adkins will appreciate this, he was a goalie too.
I think you need a keeper with character who can bark at the back four, command their area and install confidence. Boruc has had this in the past - its whether we have the time or patience to see if he can get this back again.

However, the fact remains that he looks incredibly out of shape.
We need a reliable No.1 and clearly, as Nigel doesn't have full confidence in any of them, we need to buy.
Personally I think Butland is too risky to blood at this stage as he's shown he has a few mistakes in him.
Sorensen or Given as a stop-gap for me. Gomez also available, but again you can expect the odd howler.
Out of interest, not that we need a striker, but not much speculation on Darren Bent. Can see him going to QPR, but he's not a bad option when you're playing one up front.

Looking at Boruc's 3 games for us, I honestly think he's lost it, else why would Celtic release him?
I don't think we have time to tinker between the 3 keepers, Kelvin has been a great servant however he is past his best, the Gazza is not ready yet, Boruc is unfit (IMO) so buying a n other for me would be the answer.

For wherever reason I've doesn't think Frazier Richardson is up to the task, and if Clyne has a serious injury and somehow we lose the shaman to injury or arsenal, we will find ourselves back where we were at the start of the season --stretched at the back and putting pressure on rickety keepers.
As for a keeper in the window, there don't seem to be many out there, but Butland would be good.
What is up with gazzaniga, is he still injured or has he fallen down the pecking order?? I would still like to see him start or on the bench at least, with Davis.
Borat has a crazy look in his eyes, and if you watch his antics on the motd highlights after his various errors in the first half, he looks like he's battling personal demons that have nothing to do with us and which we don't need at the club. He has a wild-eyed look that I haven't seen in a saints keeper since the days of Bruce Grobbelaar, and we all know how that ended.

So, if we do buy, we'll need to clear out or loan at least one of those.
Personally I'd keep Sharp in case the worst happens and we need him next season.
The other reason I say that is because, if it were me, I'd be focussed totally on strengthening our defensive options as a priority. I think our midfield and attack is good enough to survive when compared with our rivals.
Our first choice defence, bar the keeper, is also reasonably OK and Cork did brilliantly at right back, but if we lost either of our centrebacks, or left back, to injury, we wouldn't stand a chance with the current squad - Jos and Fox clearly aren't up to it.

OK we will not get Lampard but my god if we went for him and showed the intent...we signed Keegan, Charlie George, Frank Worthington, Alan Ball, Ossie, and on and on, lets go back to the future one great signing would bring others and think of the Academy impact...

Job description: Wanted. Anyone who can catch the ball 9 times out of 10 and isn't a nervous wreck.
Shouldn't be too difficult to find someone surely, but why we are considering Butland I don't know - start of next season maybe, but he's shown signs of being error prone and if you look at the success rate of other 'next England No.1s' like Kirkland, Green, Carson, Robinson etc all haven't quite made the grade or been sold on for a profit.
The only top 10 team that has gone for an inexperienced keeper is Man Utd, but the jury is out on both their options.
There are less than a handful of Prem teams to give youth or inexperience a chance in goal and for good reason IMO.
Alternatively, a bit more depth in defense so that our GKs are largely untroubled as was the case yesterday.
Not keen on spending loads on Butland, he is young, inexperienced and expensive!
I'm just brainboxing here as I don't know what the answer is and would rather money was spent in other areas.

Fair call Nigel
Boruc did look nervy but after a few games will give us a better option than Kelvin
Still need a top class keeper but think this will be on next season's shopping list as Butland only 19 so one for the future if we get him
Still need a centre half and someone to take the goal pressure off Ricky
COYR's
You need to give him a few games to see if he can contribute and win us some points, my gut feeling is he is a big lumpy bag of potatoes and we need an experienced stopper, Brad Friedel on loan would be outstanding.

Our centre halves look to be improving, have a feeling the introduction of shaw has helped considerably, and cork is pure class as it showed how well he slotted in at right back. Guly had a good game and worked tirelessly, I can see how he frustrates as he sometimes does the hard bit then makes a way ward pass or loses possession. Puncheon can be similar. Jwp can count himself very unlucky not to have had more play this season, he's a little gem. I think the problem up top is we are playing with 2 no 10's in Ramirez and lambert, neither are out n out strikers. Is Jay the answer, not sure yet but with a bit of confidence and a run in the team maybe?
Transfer window is time to off load a few and make room for better players than we've got IMO. Goal keeper has been an obvious problem and our defence won't settle with that position not settled. Butland b4llsed up for bcfc yesterday, think we could do with some one more experience?

I do pity you; you seem to feel that your bad feelings about the failings of your own club can be eased by posting little fantasies on here.
I offer the following in the spirit of helping you to make the most of your life. I wish you'd use your efforts more productively by asking your PST if they need help rallying support for the Portsmouth cause. If you spent the time you waste on here trying instead to save your club you might be able, in years to come, to stand proudly and say "I helped the team I love to survive".
Or you could just waste your time making up fibs on here for people who don't believe a word you say.

That was probably the best refereeing performance we,ve had all season. For once the ref was strong enough to allow shoulder barges and other good tackles and let the game flow.
Good game which we could have won, pretty sure NC and NA are having another go for Butland.
He turned the defender who already had his hand on him as he turned.
The ref relied only on the linesmans decision.
Cost us 2 points.
Boruc caught everything in the warm- up he kicked everything well, too.
He must had a bang on the head in the dressing room before he came out for the game because his handling and kicking was appalling.
I'm glad the Arsenal team that beat Newcastle 7-3 didn't turn up, cos the keeper only had to save 1 reasonable shot.

Pehaps Butland is the answer.

I have doubts about Nigel as you will know but am not ashamed about that in any way. I hasten to add that I have never asked for him to be sacked. I will be happy to be proved wrong, infact I want to be proved wrong as I really like the guy.
I apply the same standard to the manager as I do to the players. Some on here site his achievements so far and he is to be commended for that. But , as I pointed out earlier about Boruc, an impressive cv does not mean you can achieve at the highest level. There are many players who should still be here if you apply that philosophy. It's all about here and now. We are half way through the season and for the first time really, Nigel is starting to vary his tactics and approach to each game, instead of trying to play a certain one dimensional way, it's great to see and crucial to our survival. Long may it continue but there is still much work to be done. I back whoever wears the shirt but reserve my right as a lifelong fan to be critical and will never be ashamed of that.

I think this has really highlighted the fact that we do really need a good established keeper. dropped a boruc and kelvin are not up to the job. gazza is one for the future.

Wielding the chequebook is not necessarily gonna change anything. Let's face facts...we are in a struggle this season and no matter who we sign in a No1 shirt is going to have to deal with a few nervy situations...and potentially deal with a nervous crowd behind him.

Boruc did start jittery, too early to make a judgement needs to have a run of games.

However, what we need is someone to stop the ball going in the net, so I could forgive the inability to kick.
Someone above claimed he spilled at 85mins or so (can't be bothered to look) but I didn't notice it at the time or on the extended highlights.
I thought he was a divvy last time he played but I did warm to him after the first 15mins last night. I suspect NA will give him a few starts; hopefully he'll settle down a little more (particularly if NA has told him he has a few games to prove himself)

I don't think that sticking with a dodgy keeper in our return to the premiership is the best policy and may well end up costing us our place. But never mind eh we will only go down to the championship and miss out on millions of extra pounds. the trouble with laughing at oneself is that the rest of the stadium wont be laughing when he makes a comical mistake that ends up costing us dear.
No doubt in my mind now (slugger has been thinking) Boruc will be our no 1 keeper for most of the season , i'm warming to the fella to be honest ...... if one can laugh at one's self but improve as a result he'll be ok ...... i kind of sense that in him.

The crowd (including me) were expecting it but he didn't mess up again. His kicking, I'll agree, was poor, but that was all.
You may have seen things I missed but I really didn't see errors after the start.
(I come to this really, genuinely, thinkig that he was a grade one divot the last time I saw him, so I've taken some convincing). As I said, I think NA will give him a game or three and we'll see.

t his general kicking was very poor and for me he did not fill me with confidence. I always seemed to be waiting with baited breath everytime the ball was played to him. what we could really do with is a keeper with the shot stopping skill of KD, the kicking distribution of Gazza and the hand distribution of Boruc after all they all have their plus points but none of them are the complete article

The issue is whether Boruc can improve...or do we potentially gamble on a keeper who can instantly settle in and provide us with a composed performance. My point is that I don't believe that an incoming keeper (within our price range) will make any significant difference.

I cant believe that you would be happy to see Boruc in goal for the rest of the season.......you must have a stronger heart than mine, as mine was constantly in my throat every time he got near the ball!! and another thing I know it was not his fault but why did our defenders constantly play the ball to his right when he was obviously more comfortable on his left.
I HOPE I'm right!
t his general kicking was very poor and for me he did not fill me with confidence.
My point is that I don't believe that an incoming keeper (within our price range) will make any significant difference.
distribution good (tick) shot stopping good (tick) young (tick) and I am sure that he is no the only one. I still think that there is a very good chance we will get Butland this window.
...whatever happens...I think we'll be ok.

Instead, I think the coaching staff will do (and already ARE DOING) all they can to improve what we have, just as they seem to have done with the likes of Rickie over the past couple of seasons and with Fonte this season.
Of course Forecast and Krodper (is that the correct name?) won't feature and I don't think we can get much more out of Kelv. However, should he be picked again, he'll have my support.
So, in reality, it's between Gazza and Borac. Gazza will improve and, as most who have seen him seem to agree, he's one for the future. (Gazza has time. At what age did Tim Flowers finally take over as our No. 1?) He was injured and, I assume, is still injured. So, when fit, maybe he'll walk back in, I don't know. If picked, we can expect errors and a fair amount of great saves.
Otherwise, I expect to see Borac get a run. I hardly saw any of his first two disasterous outings but watched with interest yesterday. Yes, he was nervous. He reminded me of Bart when he came in against Blackpool. Luckily, this time, having got away with similar early gaffs, he didn't allow one through his legs and started to steady himself. He may yet turn out to be the answer or, at least, the best answer we have.
Let's hope, which ever one is picked, the fans will get behind him. I won't defend the guy for throwing a bottle but the stick he got from certain fans in his first match at SMS was a disgrace.
So, in short, let's not write any of our first 3 keepers off just yet.

Boruc did look nervy but after a few games will give us a better option than Kelvin
Still need a top class keeper but think this will be on next season's shopping list as Butland only 19 so one for the future if we get him
Still need a centre half and someone to take the goal pressure off Ricky
