Lallana out, but Clyne could return

Adam Lallana Adam Lallana

Adam Lallana will not feature against Chelsea in Saturday's FA Cup third round tie at St Mary's, although full-back Nathaniel Clyne could return.

Saints captain Lallana remains out with a knee injury and is likely to be sidelined with the problem for some weeks yet.

Right-back Nathaniel Clyne has missed the last two matches, also with a knee complaint, but could come into contention, while Gaston Ramirez is available after sustaining a dead leg in Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

Emmanuel Mayuka is also available before leaving for African Cup of Nations duty with Zambia on Sunday.

Saints manager Nigel Adkins has indicated he is planning to name a stronger line-up than he used in the Capital One Cup this season, but also hinted that some players could be handed a break.

"The Capital One Cup was a great opportunity to play some of the younger players, who have now gone on to play for us in the Premier League," he said.

"I want to go and win the game against Chelsea, but I also have to be mindful that we have had a run of fixtures that are very close together.

"I have to make sure we arrive on the pitch on Saturday full of energy and not risking anyone picking up a serious injury."

OK then play what you consider to be the back-ups. I don't think any fans or the Board would question that. Just don't do what Benitez said after Chelsea's abject defeat to QPR. In one breath it was:"Players were tired" in the next it was: "We changed too many players". Make your mind up, Muppet!! Is this what they get paid the big bucks for?!

THE SAINTS TEAM do better when worked hard and play regularly.

The Xmas period is evidence of that.

Playing Sunderland at home - after a good break for the players was frankly rubbish - the players had lost their tempo and intensity.

Nigel should play a STRONG SIDE - like against Arsenal and there is still room for JWP and Steeeeeeeeeeve etc

He should challenge himself and the Team.

NIGEL - HAVE PRIDE IN THE CITY OF SOUTHAMPTON AND THE SUPPORTERS AND FIGHT ON 2 FRONTS.

The usual bullish*t from Cup Competitions does not wash !!! and affecting Ticket Sales.

Chelsea are bringing down a full Squad of Supporters and are UP for this one.

ALSO : GET THE GOAL KEEPING SITUATION SORTED OUT.

Admit : Gazza is one for the future. Kelvin is on his sell by date and if Artur does not cut it - then we are risking being relegated.

You brought up WINS and GLORY and 2 Promotions but you are still learning the trade in this League.

SOUTHAMPTON SHOULD BE SITTING COMFORTABLY MID TABLE ABOVE WET SPAM.

Adapting to the Premiership (and the insistence of the style of play) and now currently the Goal Keeping Situation has cost SOUTHAMPTON valuable safety points.

EVERYONE IS PROUD OF THE FIGHT AGAINST ARSENAL - but that is how you play the Top Half of the table by denying them time and space on the ball and then give yourself an opportunity to WIN a game of football.

KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING AND WIN against Chelsea and VILLA AWAY.

WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON. COYR.

Normally would agree with you - but they won't get any time on the ball.

Tad Lee has had games with the U21 and he has the Elite Stage to get stuck into.

We don't need a Cup Run however; it is important to keep the momentum going for the VILLA AWAY Game and we should be able to be competitive to WIN this one.

The mass of Chelsea fans will give it all that - but Arsenal soon shut up when we scored.

Give RL a rest - but have him on the bench (he may want to play against Chelsea) and maybe get him on second half as an IMPACT STRIKER.

NIGEL has been very good at lots of things but he has sold THE CITY OF SOUTHAMPTON OUT too often in the Cup and too cheaply.

I have to agree with RedArmy1 on this one...and it seems Adkins realises he can't rest too many players as we need to keep the momentum up for the rest of the season by playing our strongest team.

I would put Ricky on the bench and start Rod. He deserves a chance and maybe start with Ramirez on the bench.

I'd play:

Boruc
Clyne Fonte Yoshida Shaw
Cork Spider Ward-Prowse
Mayuka Rodriguez Guly

This can easily be 4-4-2 / 4-3-3

Just listened to NA's interview this afternoon on Saints Player he's indicated he's going to put a strong side out against Chelsea and that he would like a good cup run. He also confirmed that Shaw is not for sale and any club wanting him he wishes them good luck with NC! He further said that he sees Gazza as the first choice keeper (my paraphrase) and that Gazza is fit. Apparently Clyne has had a knee injury but was training this morning albeit not sure whether he will play on Saturday.

Personally I'd like to see JWP in midfield on Saturday particularly if Cork is required to play right back again. Ramirez apparently got a dead leg on Saturday but is back training! Shoukd be an interesting game against Chelsea who clearly are beatable!!!!!!!!

Do not think we should be fielding a weak side, its definitely winnable if anything out result against Arsenal and QPR beating chels has shown that.

Bring in Ben Reeves, like to see Fox at left wing. Rodriguez could also get some time on to test the keeper, but needs support from someone like Guly or De Ridder. Also where the hell is Chappers?

According to Le Tiss - Gaston will get better and better with games played.

The Chelsea side will try and dominate possession so we will need Top Quality to have a sniff of the ball score goals and WIN a game of football.

Over to Nigel.

Seed. lol

Seaborne is on loan and the side above are not good enough to have any time on the ball or record shots on Target.

Firstly the side has got to work exceptionally hard to deny Chelsea time and space on the ball.

then they need the Quality to go and WIN a game of football.

Hoover is error prone.

Gaston needs games to get better and better.

Jack Cork MoM is needed for his Defensive qualities and WILL want to play.

Jrod is his natural position should be up for consideration with the option to bring SIR RICKIE later on in the game.

Not sure Fox will deal with the threat down the wings. Like when he delivers crosses - but not good enough for Chelsea.

Nigel needs to have a similar side to Arsenal (poss 1 or 2 tweaks) and have a strong bench.

This game is a good game for the Players to get ready for VILLA AWAY.

WORK 'EM HARD NIGEL. THE TEAM PLAY SO MUCH BETTER.

Injuries and Cards are not too much of a worry as SOUTHAMPTON play fairly and are well placed in that League.

Red Army makes good points about momentum and the fact that the break pre-Sunderland didn't seem to do us any good. Unfortunately I'm just not as gung-ho as Red Army.

I'm actually looking forward to a break from the tension of the Prem battle this weekend and I wouldn't want to see any key players sustaining injuries on Saturday. I'd be inclined to use the match to give the wider squad some valuable match experience - and give them a chance to stake a claim for a regular place. I think that's what Nige will do - and he'll claim it's a strong team too.

I'm fairly relaxed about the result. The FA cup is a short term sideshow. Survival in the Prem ahead of next year's huge income stream increase is vital to our future.

Sorry about the timidity Red Army, but I'm like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs this season.

Here here!!

Agree - The GK is important to sort out. You need a quality 'spine' in the PL - that means quality GK, Central Defender (or two) Midfield General and Centre Forward.

I really do see our biggest weakness is in the GK right now! It has cost us points!

Perception is everything, and what I mean by that is that a GK with a level of confidence really places 'doubt' in the mind of the opposition - can we score against this bloke, he is providing such a commanding performance in the 18 yard box - thats WHAT WE NEED!

Can Davis get that back? Is he past it? Gazza is still young, Boruc get out there son and start DOMINATING that 18 yard box...thou shalt not pass!! I will encourage these guys to a point but I want to see some F**K YOU to the opposition from the GK

Has anyone not seen him at Staplewood. SMS or about town? I thought I saw him at the stadium against Arsenal on TV - but surely there must be some information available?
Is he still on crutches?
Is he in light training?
Can he run?
Curiouser and curiouser as Alice once said!
Still back to tomorrow - I agree resting players seems to let them off the boil. No one wants to sit out games - if they do they aren't players we want.
I would give JWP a run in place of Davis - but only because I thought he did really well earlier this season against top opposition.

Key players for me are JC, Spider, Gaston, and RL. These players are absolutely vital for the wins we need against Villa and Wigan. I really believe these 2 games will define our season. I can't see any of them starting on Sat. Mauka and JRod up front; JWP and Davis in midfield with Guly and Punch. The usual back four (assuming NC is fit). We can contest the game with this bunch.
