Saints will not sign a new keeper this month, despite the continued uncertainty in the position, according to manager Nigel Adkins.

A fifth goalkeeping change of the Premier League campaign was made this week when Kelvin Davis was dropped in favour of Artur Boruc for the 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

The Polish stopper endured a shaky start to the match, fumbling the ball a couple of times, and slipping over as he made a clearance, but he survived without disaster.

Boruc, Davis and 20-year-old Paulo Gazzaniga have all been handed the number one jersey twice this term in the league, but all three have committed notable errors.

Saints have again been linked with a move for Birmingham’s Jack Butland, who they attempted to sign in the summer, only to have a £6m bid rejected.

Adkins, however, insists there is no need to purchase a keeper this month, declaring Gazzaniga as the man who will fill the position for years to come – even if he is struggling to get on the bench at the moment.

“We have a young goalkeeper in Paulo Gazzaniga, who is going to be the future of this football club,” Adkins said.

“We have two experienced goalkeepers in Kelvin Davis and Artur Boruc.

“They are the three goalkeepers we’ve got now and I do not anticipate another goalkeeper coming in during this window.”

Adkins is still looking to strengthen his squad this month, though, with Cagliari defender Davide Astori among those said to be on the radar.

Chelsea midfielder Yossi Benayoun is the latest to be linked with a switch, although the Israeli international is earning big wages and had an unsuccessful injury-hit loan spell at West Ham in the first half of this season.

“I think you’ve always got to improve,” said Adkins. “You can't stand still. Whatever we’ve done in the past is in the past. We’ve got to keep looking at the future.

“We’ve got to keep moving forward, moving on and everyone has got to keep striving to do that.

“We’ve had our recruitment meeting well before the January window has opened.

“We have a good recruitment department, we have targeted several players, we have had conversations about availability and non-availability.

“I would like to think that during the course of the window a couple of people will be coming in.”
