Full time - Saints 1 Chelsea 5

4:47pm

GOAL - Saints 1 Chelsea 5 - Frank Lampard pen 83

Lampard tries to lift the ball into the area but it is blocked by Steven Davis. It hits his chest first but bounces on to his arm which is hanging out.

Mike Dean thinks about it and decides it was deliberate and it was inside the area and gives the pentlay.

Boruc dived the wrong way as Lampard drills home.

4:43pm

Tadanari Lee gets on for Puncheon while Oscar replaces Mata for Chelsea

4:37pm

Marin on for Moses for Chelsea.

Boruc makes another save, this time from Lampard's long range drive.

4:35pm

De Ridder sees a shot saved from point blank range by Turnbull before the follow up is deflceted wide.

Up the other end Boruc saves from Ba.

4:26pm

It gets worse for Saints.

Fonte has to be stretchered off after injuring his knee trying to stop Ba.

Hooiveld on

4:26pm

GOAL - Saints 1 Chelsea 4 - Ba 61

Hazard's ball in is met by Ba getting across Fonte at the far post to flick home his finish.

4:18pm

Saints change with Steve De Ridder replacing Morgan Schneiderlin

4:15pm

GOAL - Saints 1 Chelsea 3 - Branislav Ivanovic 52

It had been coming and Ivanovic powers home a header to put Saints further behind

4:11pm

Chelsea have started the second half strongly.

Saints need to hold on and weather the storm to give themselves a chance to throw everything at Chelsea as the game wears on

4:06pm

The second half is underway

3:51pm

Half time - Saints 1 Chelsea 2

3:50pm

GOAL - Saints 1 Chelsea 2 - Victor Moses 45

With virtually the last kick of the half Moses puts Chelsea ahead.

Cole cuts the ball back from inside the area to Moses who takes one touch to control and another to fire a half volley into the far corner

3:44pm

Moses takes the ball down on his chest and strikes golwards but Boruc saves.

3:41pm

GOAL - Saints 1 Chelsea 1 - Demba Ba 36

Chelsea expose Saints down the right.

Hazard picks out Luiz in the box.

He lifts the ball over Boruc and Ba gets there just ahead of Steven Davis to finish from a yard out.

3:37pm

Saints are working so hard to contain Chelsea.

You could not fault them for effort or work rate.

3:30pm

Hazard curls a right footed shot just wide of the far post

3:27pm

GOAL - Saints 1 Chelsea 0 - Jay Rodriguez 22

Puncheon's superb pass picks out Rodriguez who takes the ball into his stride with the outside of his right boot and then finishes low across Ross Turnbull and into the far corner with the outside of his right boot.

A superbly worked and taken goal.

3:16pm

A break in play is a chance to reflect on a very quiet, but satisfying, start for Saints

3:08pm

Confident start from Saints

3:05pm

As expected both teams are matched up with a 4-2-3-1 formation

3:02pm

The match is under way

2:58pm

The teams are out and almost ready to go

2:45pm

It's going to be an interesting match.

Both teams look pretty strong but with further strength on the bench.

After Chelsea's defeat to QPR you don't fancy that Benitez will want a defeat to Saints but that underdog mentality might just play into the hands of Nigel Adkins and his team.

2:37pm

Just over 20 minutes until kick off now

2:23pm

Demba Ba makes his Chelsea debut.

Saints will be hoping to make it one to forget.

2:15pm

SAINTS: Boruc, Cork, Fonte, Yoshida, Shaw, Schneiderlin, S Davis, Ward-Prowse, Puncheon, Rodriguez, Guly.

Subs: K Davis, Hooiveld, Reeves, De Ridder, Lee, Lambert, Mayuka.

CHELSEA: Turnbull, Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Cahill, Cole, Ramires, Luiz, Moses, Mata, Hazard, Ba.

Subs: Hilario, Ferreira, Bertrand, Lampard, Oscar, Marin, Torres.

2:06pm

Rickie Lambert is rested for Saints.

Gaston Ramirez is also not risked after suffering a dead leg.

Nor is Nathaniel Clyne after returning to training following an ankle injury.

James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez come into to the team.

1:59pm

It's a special day for former Chelsea man Jack Cork and he certainly expects to face a strong Blues side.

"I think they'll be out to prove a point," Cork said.

"Some people are convinced they played a weakened side against QPR, but whichever side they put out it's never going to be a weak team so hopefully we could take advantage if they're on the start of a bad run.

"We could look at it either way, but there's not much pressure on us really.

"A cup run would be great and it could help our league form, but the league is our main priority at the minute, and that will be our main focus."

1:58pm

Chelsea are expected to name a strong team today after their defeat by QPR in midweek.

When asked about Rafa Benitez was coy and said: "My strongest team? Maybe it depends for you on the names.

"For me, it depends on the moment of the players, how they feel every game.

"We will try win every competition until the end of the season."

1:19pm

Demba Ba is poised to make his Chelsea debut in today's FA Cup third-round tie at Southampton after completing his move from Newcastle.

Ba could replace Fernando Torres up front, with interim manager Rafael Benitez keen to rest his fellow Spaniard at times during the second half of the season.

Nigeria stars John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses will be available before jetting off to Portugal for a pre-African Nations Cup training camp, but John Terry (knee) and Petr Cech (groin) remain out.

1:19pm

Adam Lallana will again miss out when Southampton face Chelsea in the FA Cup.

The Saints captain is unavailable for the third-round tie with a knee injury, although right-back Nathaniel Clyne could feature at St Mary's after a knee complaint of his own.

Gaston Ramirez is available to feature despite sustaining a dead leg against Arsenal on New Year's Day. Zambia international Emmanuel Mayuka leaves for the African Nations Cup after the game.

1:13pm

Welcome to the Daily Echo’s online coverage of Saints v Chelsea at St Mary’s in the FA Cup third round.

The two teams will meet twice in the next week and a half with another game between the sides scheduled for Wednesday, January 16.

That will be the rearranged Premier League game from December, which was postponed due to Chelsea’s World Club Cup commitments, unless today ends in a draw.

If that is the case then the January 16 fixture will be the replay with the league meeting to be rescheduled again for later in the season.

EX SAINTS star WAYNE BRIDGE has been the SEAGULLS best player in the 1st half.DEAN HAMMOND doing his bit too.
i predict a tight match v chelsea with it possibly going to a replay or saints winning a high scoring game by the odd goal.

Whilst not too concerned about losing this one I am concerned about how often we lose (not that we have lost this one yet) from a winning position. After the Arsenal draw it's 19 points lost from a winning position. How this an be addressed I have no idea but then I am not paid a huge salary to provide answers, NA certainly is and needs to find the answer.

Obviously not all down to 1 player but like Newcastle, without or main men we haven't got much as back up. We need to ship a lot out and require a cb, lb, gk at the very least. Would be nice to get players in other areas but not as urgent. Adkins unlike other managers has not built from the back, resulting in a loss in confidence as we are prone to the odd bashing (arsenal away). We had just restored that confidence but not sure what this result will do. Fingers crossed for quick dealings in this window but I will not hold my breathe.

Was not expecting much from today's match, a few positives is we lost to Chelsea in the cup and not the league. Hope NA and the team have gained some valuable information ready for when we face them in the league. But it is NA style not to be that motivated for cup games, as the Prem is more important. so it was a good Training session!, be a bit different when we face them again, Remirez, Lambert, Hopefully Lallana.

Glad we're out, half-strength team so let's not get too quick to read much into it but...

can we have a new keeper and three or four new defenders now please and why weren't we working on something and just finishing the paperwork on new year's day?

Fonte injury means a result at Villa is now very much in doubt - that's two of our first choice defence out and our star midfielder and captain. Out squad simply can't cope with that. We will get zero clean sheets with Jos in the back four.

We now have a week to get that Italian guy in to replace Fonte.

In Nigel we trust. In common sense we trust.

Nigel has given Davis two chances, Boruc two chances (defeat not his fault but clearly he's not been upbeatable).

If he seriously Isn't planning to change the goalkeeping department then, for consistency, give Gazza his second chance and make an assessment before it's too late.

Even if he comes through, we need a top, top quality, experienced alternative to compete and bring him on.

As Nigel has said, Gazza is the future of this football club. He may well not be the present. Clearly Kelvin (great servant and thanks for the memories) or Boruc aren't either.

Glad we're out of it -- to me the choice is obvious between winning the FA Cup and being relegated or being knocked out in the 3rd Round and staying up.
Pity about Fonte, just shows the risks of playing in a competition that has really lost most of its glamour and public interest.
For NA to say he's not interested in signing a goalkeeper, is mind boggling, if you rolled the three we have i.e. two over the hill and a novice, in to one, we still wouldn't have one of PL quality.
As LMcL said when he signed Shilts a good keeper is worth 10 points a season, a bad one loses you 10 points.
NC's and NA's actions in the current transfer wndow will be vital for Saints surival.
Let's hope they do better than they did last time!

I like gazza and agree he is our future, but he needs some one he can look up to and kelv and boruc imo are not the 1's.
QPR are proof that making wholesale changes do not work. We have to be careful what characters are bought to the team and do not spoil team spirit. As a club we need to be busy in these windows and I would like to see deals (ins and outs) done quick, will be interesting to see if Astori arrives in the next few days now Fonte has picked up an injury, I do hope so.

I presume your name is a pathetic attempt to wind up your nearby and vastly superior neighbours. It's actually quite a good ploy if only you were comig from a position of strength. So given our obvious superiority over your disgraced, bankrupt and soon to be extinct little club I am actively considering changing my pseudonym to £200000000 between us. Obviously u r in admin. and you have no players so I have rather generously valued your club at £0.00. The mighty Saints have a custom Prem. standard stadium worth a minimum of £50M. Our playing squad is valued as follows. Ramirez 12M. Lallana 10M Shaw 10M J Rod 7M Clyne 5M Ward Prows 5M Billy Sharp 5M Cork 5M Spider 5M Lambert 4M Lee 3M Fonte 3M Yoshida 3M S Davis 3M Mayuka 3M Guly 2M. We also have a few lesser players coming to the end of their contracts plus all 3 keepers. Lets just call all of them 3M. Punch is also included in this valuation. On a worse case scenario we have four 12M parachute payments over the next 4 years . Thats 48 m and the players add up to 88M. Total so far 186 M. Lets call it a nice round 14 M for the entire Academy setup and we can now be valued at 200 MILLION POUNDS. Obviously these are my personal valuations. Some might be a bit low and obviously when we stay up we will be in receipt of another huge handout. In football today money , not history, does the talking. We have it. You don't. As such a large club we are actively seeking a new rival. Unfortunately there isn't another club south of London that comes near to our size, fanbase etc.Anyway I thought you might like to consider Exeter or Aldershot as your rivals next year. The following year Salisbury would be very suitable as they look likely to get promoted from the league you are eventually heading for. That would be Conference South. You would have a great choice then. Take your pick from Eastleigh, Havant and Waterlooville or Dorchester. These are all quite close to you and come with the added benefit of being of a similar size to yourselves and are only slightly wealthier

It won't be a new goalie as Nigel reckons we don't need to buy a new keeper?
If we have a problem with confidence in our defence & our keepers can't trust the defence why did we drop 4 players?
Surely the best form of defence is attack?
If unlike Villa this was a game we didn't want to win why not pull out of the FA cup for this year?
or play the under 21 team but not play a weakened team whilst trying to work out who to play in goal it just doesn't make sense to me does it to you?

proves my point that the most important thing at a football club is the players, without them you don't get fans. Up to a good manger to improve them. Supporters probably knew Ramirez and Lambert would be rested and a weakened team would be on display, the club needs to market these cup games and make every effort to sell seats. On average imo every seat occupied brings in an extra £3 on food and drink........Do the sums thats quite a bit of revenue lost.

Let's hope they do better than they did last time!
and i dont like critising ne of the mighty saints players but GK errors have cost us 13 points so far this season all ready. robinson, danns, curtis davis, and benayoun please in the next few days please!

Seriously....you blame that result on the keeper?
Obviously not all down to 1 player but like Newcastle, without or main men we haven't got much as back up. We need to ship a lot out and require a cb, lb, gk at the very least. Would be nice to get players in other areas but not as urgent. Adkins unlike other managers has not built from the back, resulting in a loss in confidence as we are prone to the odd bashing (arsenal away). We had just restored that confidence but not sure what this result will do. Fingers crossed for quick dealings in this window but I will not hold my breathe.
Fair comment...the fact remains that we can't go out and buy a Prem side off the shelf....we still need to evolve and learn. I'd be satisfied with a quality CB...and A N Other to bolster the squad.
The rest is down to our continued progression. I see Gazza as our future keeper...behind a quality defence....
...eventually.

These are all quite close to you and come with the added benefit of being of a similar size to yourselves and are only slightly wealthier
dont forget weymouth!!!!
Or Blackfield and Langley my old team.

Thought JWP did well in the first half.

Lets get this site BACK to being a site for SAINTS fans.

If by some slim chance they want to debate football fine, that's what this is for, not the silly little snide remarks that so many of you encourage.

We are the NUMBER ONE CLUB ON THE SOUTH COAST. Let's act like it. Today game is over lets focus on the next game. That is more important than any number of SKUNTS.

All this talk about trophies from you and More Glory or Same Old Story is tiresome.

Apart from the fact Newco Pompey will have no history, it is ancient history for the most part.

It's like fans of Hungary saying they are a better team than Holland, or the Greeks or Danish saying the same.

These days, qualification for the Champions League and Premier League is considered the holy grail and rightly so and Saints have been in the top division for around 30 of the past 40 years, while Pompey bought a couple of years before humiliating themselves and beginning your downhill spiral.

If you asked the majority of the UK public who the bigger club was they'd say Saints unquestionably and, as more of the people who can actually remember you winning anything (bar your bought FA Cup) gradually enter dementia if any are indeed still here, and you slip into non-league, that gulf and perception will only increase.

Well why don't you ask the Liebherr family that question. They have turned a 30 odd million pound investment into it's current lofty position. Try not to dwell on the past so much Of course we had to sell some of our youngsters when we needed the cash Now we have a chairman who won't be bullied by the big boys and if we do sell in the future it will be for our asking price. Lets face it the future is extremely bright for our club. If your club was worth tuppence somebody would have bought it. Fact is it isn't . Please feel free to keep coming on our site . Personally I find your hatred and jealousy of us extremely amusing. Your club is as significant to as as Bury are to Manure, and they have won the cup twice as well.

These are all quite close to you and come with the added benefit of being of a similar size to yourselves and are only slightly wealthier
dont forget weymouth!!!!
Or Blackfield and Langley my old team.
I used to supply the beer to Blackfield and Langley...dump of a clubhouse...but boy, those fellas could drink!
dont for get totton!!!! or bashley

If you asked the majority of the UK public who the bigger club was they'd say Saints unquestionably and, as more of the people who can actually remember you winning anything (bar your bought FA Cup) gradually enter dementia if any are indeed still here, and you slip into non-league, that gulf and perception will only increase.
technically they still havent paid for the fa cup it was more like stolen

Here we go again....
Poopey babies coming on here giving it some... But they know they are an embarrassment to the word Football.
History, history, history is all they go on about... And that's just what it is... History... In the past!
The here and now is what matters and the fact is we are the best club on the south coast... Yes... FACT!
Get used to it Poopey... It's going to be the FUTURE... Not the PAST!
Saints forever.

Norge...these c0cks are too infantile to give a t0ss about there club.

They are no better than annoying little brats running round a pub when you're trying to have a beer and chat with a mate...

..I'm going back to just ignoring them.

Positives today, a good goal by JRod, Shaw assured as ever, Mayuka took quite a battering and kept on getting up and carrying on regardless, Fonte was imperious until injured, hope it's not too bad. It didn't rain, apart from that I can't think of much.
Thought JWP did well in the first half.
Puncheon was here, there & everywhere!

In a way although they are not paying for it financially, they are paying for it in the way that misery is constantly being heaped upon them, they are reaping the harvest from the cheating seeds that they have sown.

Most real Pompey fans that I know are more interested in the issues at PFC and could not care less what we are doing.

Saints are doing well, out of the bottom 3 at the halfway stage is something we all would have have taken after our disastrous start.

In Adkins we trust, Pompey RIP

further proof that saints cannot handle the premiership but are too good for the championship, as has been the case for the past 20 years.....
