Lampard tries to lift the ball into the area but it is blocked by Steven Davis. It hits his chest first but bounces on to his arm which is hanging out.

Up the other end Boruc saves from Ba.
4:26pm
It gets worse for Saints.
Fonte has to be stretchered off after injuring his knee trying to stop Ba.
Hooiveld on
4:26pm
GOAL - Saints 1 Chelsea 4 - Ba 61
Hazard's ball in is met by Ba getting across Fonte at the far post to flick home his finish.
4:18pm
Saints change with Steve De Ridder replacing Morgan Schneiderlin
4:15pm
GOAL - Saints 1 Chelsea 3 - Branislav Ivanovic 52
It had been coming and Ivanovic powers home a header to put Saints further behind
4:11pm
Chelsea have started the second half strongly.
Saints need to hold on and weather the storm to give themselves a chance to throw everything at Chelsea as the game wears on
4:06pm
The second half is underway
3:51pm
Half time - Saints 1 Chelsea 2
3:50pm
GOAL - Saints 1 Chelsea 2 - Victor Moses 45
With virtually the last kick of the half Moses puts Chelsea ahead.
Cole cuts the ball back from inside the area to Moses who takes one touch to control and another to fire a half volley into the far corner
3:44pm
Moses takes the ball down on his chest and strikes golwards but Boruc saves.
3:41pm

Chelsea expose Saints down the right.
Hazard picks out Luiz in the box.
He lifts the ball over Boruc and Ba gets there just ahead of Steven Davis to finish from a yard out.
3:37pm
Saints are working so hard to contain Chelsea.
You could not fault them for effort or work rate.
3:30pm
Hazard curls a right footed shot just wide of the far post
3:27pm
GOAL - Saints 1 Chelsea 0 - Jay Rodriguez 22
Puncheon's superb pass picks out Rodriguez who takes the ball into his stride with the outside of his right boot and then finishes low across Ross Turnbull and into the far corner with the outside of his right boot.
A superbly worked and taken goal.
3:16pm
A break in play is a chance to reflect on a very quiet, but satisfying, start for Saints
3:08pm
Confident start from Saints
3:05pm
As expected both teams are matched up with a 4-2-3-1 formation
3:02pm
The match is under way
2:58pm
The teams are out and almost ready to go
2:45pm
It's going to be an interesting match.
Both teams look pretty strong but with further strength on the bench.
After Chelsea's defeat to QPR you don't fancy that Benitez will want a defeat to Saints but that underdog mentality might just play into the hands of Nigel Adkins and his team.
2:37pm
Just over 20 minutes until kick off now
2:23pm
Demba Ba makes his Chelsea debut.
Saints will be hoping to make it one to forget.
2:15pm
SAINTS: Boruc, Cork, Fonte, Yoshida, Shaw, Schneiderlin, S Davis, Ward-Prowse, Puncheon, Rodriguez, Guly.
Subs: K Davis, Hooiveld, Reeves, De Ridder, Lee, Lambert, Mayuka.
CHELSEA: Turnbull, Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Cahill, Cole, Ramires, Luiz, Moses, Mata, Hazard, Ba.
Subs: Hilario, Ferreira, Bertrand, Lampard, Oscar, Marin, Torres.
2:06pm
Rickie Lambert is rested for Saints.
Gaston Ramirez is also not risked after suffering a dead leg.
Nor is Nathaniel Clyne after returning to training following an ankle injury.
James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez come into to the team.
1:59pm
It's a special day for former Chelsea man Jack Cork and he certainly expects to face a strong Blues side.
"I think they'll be out to prove a point," Cork said.
"Some people are convinced they played a weakened side against QPR, but whichever side they put out it's never going to be a weak team so hopefully we could take advantage if they're on the start of a bad run.
"We could look at it either way, but there's not much pressure on us really.
"A cup run would be great and it could help our league form, but the league is our main priority at the minute, and that will be our main focus."
1:58pm
Chelsea are expected to name a strong team today after their defeat by QPR in midweek.
When asked about Rafa Benitez was coy and said: "My strongest team? Maybe it depends for you on the names.
"For me, it depends on the moment of the players, how they feel every game.
"We will try win every competition until the end of the season."
1:19pm
Demba Ba is poised to make his Chelsea debut in today's FA Cup third-round tie at Southampton after completing his move from Newcastle.
Ba could replace Fernando Torres up front, with interim manager Rafael Benitez keen to rest his fellow Spaniard at times during the second half of the season.
Nigeria stars John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses will be available before jetting off to Portugal for a pre-African Nations Cup training camp, but John Terry (knee) and Petr Cech (groin) remain out.
1:19pm
Adam Lallana will again miss out when Southampton face Chelsea in the FA Cup.
The Saints captain is unavailable for the third-round tie with a knee injury, although right-back Nathaniel Clyne could feature at St Mary's after a knee complaint of his own.
Gaston Ramirez is available to feature despite sustaining a dead leg against Arsenal on New Year's Day. Zambia international Emmanuel Mayuka leaves for the African Nations Cup after the game.
1:13pm
Welcome to the Daily Echo’s online coverage of Saints v Chelsea at St Mary’s in the FA Cup third round.
The two teams will meet twice in the next week and a half with another game between the sides scheduled for Wednesday, January 16.
That will be the rearranged Premier League game from December, which was postponed due to Chelsea’s World Club Cup commitments, unless today ends in a draw.
If that is the case then the January 16 fixture will be the replay with the league meeting to be rescheduled again for later in the season.

Just getting ready to go, feeling a bit down, so hoping for some sort of a result to cheer me up, but not really bothered one way or the other, apart from the fact I don't like seeing Saints lose under any circumstances. Brighton showing the way, 1 up v toon.
i predict a tight match v chelsea with it possibly going to a replay or saints winning a high scoring game by the odd goal.

Funny world when you read the line-up in the comments 7 minutes ahead of the main report. Bravo, Slugger. C'mon Echo, get with it. Also... "20 mins till match time" is hardly the most insightful contribution to the world of sports reporting. Is that an intern on duty today? How about:

Fonte injury means a result at Villa is now very much in doubt - that's two of our first choice defence out and our star midfielder and captain. Out squad simply can't cope with that. We will get zero clean sheets with Jos in the back four.
We now have a week to get that Italian guy in to replace Fonte.

If he seriously Isn't planning to change the goalkeeping department then, for consistency, give Gazza his second chance and make an assessment before it's too late.
Even if he comes through, we need a top, top quality, experienced alternative to compete and bring him on.
As Nigel has said, Gazza is the future of this football club. He may well not be the present. Clearly Kelvin (great servant and thanks for the memories) or Boruc aren't either.

Pity about Fonte, just shows the risks of playing in a competition that has really lost most of its glamour and public interest.
For NA to say he's not interested in signing a goalkeeper, is mind boggling, if you rolled the three we have i.e. two over the hill and a novice, in to one, we still wouldn't have one of PL quality.
As LMcL said when he signed Shilts a good keeper is worth 10 points a season, a bad one loses you 10 points.
NC's and NA's actions in the current transfer wndow will be vital for Saints surival.
Let's hope they do better than they did last time!

QPR are proof that making wholesale changes do not work. We have to be careful what characters are bought to the team and do not spoil team spirit. As a club we need to be busy in these windows and I would like to see deals (ins and outs) done quick, will be interesting to see if Astori arrives in the next few days now Fonte has picked up an injury, I do hope so.

Could be worse We could have lost 5-0 to the mighty Swindon and not won a game in 13, have to train on our home pitch because we cant afford to rent a playing field in Eastleigh, have all our players on 1 month contacts, have a ground that can only be said looks like a Cow shed, have Westwood as a Fan of our beautiful club, be in league 1 up to our eyeballs in debt and still think we are going to sign Prem players, and best of all we could all believe we are the bestest ever fans in the whole wide world AND BELIEVE WE ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN ANY OTHER FANS YET ONLY 12000 of us turn up. Glad we're out of it -- to me the choice is obvious between winning the FA Cup and being relegated or being knocked out in the 3rd Round and staying up.

On a worse case scenario we have four 12M parachute payments over the next 4 years . Thats 48 m and the players add up to 88M. Total so far 186 M. Lets call it a nice round 14 M for the entire Academy setup and we can now be valued at 200 MILLION POUNDS. Obviously these are my personal valuations. Baddesley Bill wrote:Obviously not all down to 1 player but like Newcastle, without or main men we haven't got much as back up. We need to ship a lot out and require a cb, lb, gk at the very least. Would be nice to get players in other areas but not as urgent. Adkins unlike other managers has not built from the back, resulting in a loss in confidence as we are prone to the odd bashing (arsenal away). We had just restored that confidence but not sure what this result will do. Fingers crossed for quick dealings in this window but I will not hold my breathe.
tarquin farquharson wrote:Seriously....you blame that result on the keeper?
Boruc - 12 conceded in 4.
Point proven.
Get rid of.
We haven't got time for him to rediscover his glory days.
The rest is down to our continued progression. I see Gazza as our future keeper...behind a quality defence....
...eventually.

Lets get this site BACK to being a site for SAINTS fans.
If by some slim chance they want to debate football fine, that's what this is for, not the silly little snide remarks that so many of you encourage.
We are the NUMBER ONE CLUB ON THE SOUTH COAST. Let's act like it. Today game is over lets focus on the next game. That is more important than any number of SKUNTS.

All this talk about trophies from you and More Glory or Same Old Story is tiresome.
Apart from the fact Newco Pompey will have no history, it is ancient history for the most part.
It's like fans of Hungary saying they are a better team than Holland, or the Greeks or Danish saying the same.
These days, qualification for the Champions League and Premier League is considered the holy grail and rightly so and Saints have been in the top division for around 30 of the past 40 years, while Pompey bought a couple of years before humiliating themselves and beginning your downhill spiral.
If you asked the majority of the UK public who the bigger club was they'd say Saints unquestionably and, as more of the people who can actually remember you winning anything (bar your bought FA Cup) gradually enter dementia if any are indeed still here, and you slip into non-league, that gulf and perception will only increase.

If you asked the majority of the UK public who the bigger club was they'd say Saints unquestionably and, as more of the people who can actually remember you winning anything (bar your bought FA Cup) gradually enter dementia if any are indeed still here, and you slip into non-league, that gulf and perception will only increase.

Saints are doing well, out of the bottom 3 at the halfway stage is something we all would have have taken after our disastrous start.
In Adkins we trust, Pompey RIP
