Nigel Adkins admitted Saints “couldn’t get anywhere near” Chelsea in the second half as his side were dumped out of the FA Cup 5-1 at St Mary’s.
Saints took the lead in a bright opening through Jay Rodriguez but a Demba Ba debut double, Victor Moses, Branislav Ivanovic and Frank Lampard penalty ensured the holders easily progressed.
“I thought we did very well in the first half leading up to the goals just before half time,” said Adkins.
“It was a good goal from Jay Rodriguez and a nice bit of football and I thought we started the game very brightly and moved the football about although we maybe didn’t penetrate as much as we wanted to.
“I thought we did really well in the first half but the goals just before half time was not what we needed and second half I think it’s fair to say that Chelsea’s class told in the end.
“I thought they were really good in the second half and we couldn’t get anywhere near them.”
Adkins also confirmed that Saints are waiting to discover the extent of the knee injury suffered by Jose Fonte with the Portuguese stretchered off during the second half.
“It’s not good when somebody gets stretchered off,” reflected a rueful Adkins.
“He’s being assessed now so I can’t say the extent of the damage.
“It is a knee injury that it looks as though he’s picked up but I can’t say what it is at this moment.”

Adkins will lead the team to relegation if he is not shown the exit door sooner than later! I think that former blues coach Di Matteo should takeover to save the club from further embarassment...

Fonte's injury may be a blessing in disguise. This may force NC & NA to spend more on a solid CB, maybe 2. Fonte has shown significant improvement. However, would like to get an "enforcer" in there with BPL experience.
Would have loved a solid cup run. However, avoiding relegation is paramount.
