Adkins reflects on Cup hammering

Nigel Adkins admitted Saints “couldn’t get anywhere near” Chelsea in the second half as his side were dumped out of the FA Cup 5-1 at St Mary’s.

Saints took the lead in a bright opening through Jay Rodriguez but a Demba Ba debut double, Victor Moses, Branislav Ivanovic and Frank Lampard penalty ensured the holders easily progressed.

“I thought we did very well in the first half leading up to the goals just before half time,” said Adkins.

“It was a good goal from Jay Rodriguez and a nice bit of football and I thought we started the game very brightly and moved the football about although we maybe didn’t penetrate as much as we wanted to.

“I thought we did really well in the first half but the goals just before half time was not what we needed and second half I think it’s fair to say that Chelsea’s class told in the end.

“I thought they were really good in the second half and we couldn’t get anywhere near them.”

Adkins also confirmed that Saints are waiting to discover the extent of the knee injury suffered by Jose Fonte with the Portuguese stretchered off during the second half.

“It’s not good when somebody gets stretchered off,” reflected a rueful Adkins.

“He’s being assessed now so I can’t say the extent of the damage.

“It is a knee injury that it looks as though he’s picked up but I can’t say what it is at this moment.”

It made now difference to the result but it was like being at an away game. We need to change things so that away fans don't take over the Northam end

Sometimes you've just got to say that you've been beaten by a far better team and a class act. Today was one of yhose days. Chelsea the better team, Juan Mata the class act.
As for Chelsea fans? A total disgrace to the club

Adkins will lead the team to relegation if he is not shown the exit door sooner than later! I think that former blues coach Di Matteo should takeover to save the club from further embarassment...

Saints have their first poor performance in a long time and some one says it is time to replace NA? BS! Saints were outclassed today. Plain and simple. Chelsea is too deep and have much bigger pockets.

Fonte's injury may be a blessing in disguise. This may force NC & NA to spend more on a solid CB, maybe 2. Fonte has shown significant improvement. However, would like to get an "enforcer" in there with BPL experience.

Would have loved a solid cup run. However, avoiding relegation is paramount.

Agree with hdfw09 that although fonte has improved, would be good to see 2 cb's come in. Looks like Astori will be coming in and would love to see Chris Samba partner him, seems to have had some trouble in russia and could be up for the move. Also this was the first game of the season that I thought Schneiderlin looked out of sorts and with the amount of ground hes covered this season who can blame him? Someone like Tom Huddlestone at spurs could come in and provide good competition with similar attributes (spreads play well and sits deep). Would also add a winger like Ricardo Quaresma who is currently a free agent with experience at world-class clubs or perhaps Scott Sinclair on loan.

Many many games this season I have seen Saints take the lead... Then something strange happens. We continue to be threatening for another 5-10 mins and then concede.

Man C (a)
Man U (h)
Everton (a)
Fulham (h)
Swansea (h, keeper error)
Norwich (h, keeper error)
Arsenal (h)
Chelsea (h)

This is happening way too much, why is this happening?

Personally, I was a little taken aback by the way Nigel Adkins sat in the dug-out like a scared rabbit, with a side-kick on either side of him. All through the second half he should have been in the technical area offering encouragement and moral support to beaten troops. This is the first time I have said anything negative about Adkins, but I strongly feel he could and should have offered more to his team. Weak (non-existent) leadership.
