Adkins admits Saints' cup defeat is a reality check

Nigel Adkins Nigel Adkins

Nigel Adkins admitted Saints were given a reality check as they were knocked out of the FA Cup 5-1 by holders Chelsea.

After three back-to-back draws in the Premier League, the last of which came against Arsenal, confidence was high around St Mary’s going into the game.

Saints started well and took the lead through Jay Rodriguez but the second half in particular became a Chelsea procession and left the men in white looking utterly despondent as they struggled to compete.

Saints have to face Chelsea again a week on Wednesday, and this time at Stamford Bridge in the league, but before that it’s a huge match at Aston Villa.

“Sometimes you just give people a bit of a reality check because we have played against some exceptional players and in the second half they were excellent,” said Adkins.

“We’ve hit a Chelsea team in form in the second half of the game but we will pick ourselves up.

“Our destiny is in our own hands. The Opta stats will show how well we are doing and it gives us hope and optimism for the second half of the campaign.”

He added: “I thought we did very well in the first half leading up to the goals just before half time.

“It was a good goal from Jay Rodriguez and a nice bit of football and I thought we started the game very brightly and moved the football about although we maybe didn’t penetrate as much as we wanted to.

“I thought we did really well in the first half but the goals just before half time was not what we needed and second half I think it’s fair to say that Chelsea’s class told in the end.

“I thought they were really good in the second half and we couldn’t get anywhere near them.”

Many many games this season I have seen Saints take the lead... Then something strange happens. We continue to be threatening for another 5-10 mins and then concede.

Man C (a)
Man U (h)
Everton (a)
Fulham (h)
Swansea (h, keeper error)
Norwich (h, keeper error)
Arsenal (h)
Chelsea (h)

This is happening way too much, why is this happening?

It is happening because we are rubbish at holding on to a lead, why is another matter. David Blunkett could have given us some advice on that subject.

not too worried to be out of the cup - the PL is where we need to focus.
Would have liked to see the likes of Chappers, Lee, Hoolivet, de Ridder & the like given a full game - lots of them haven't been given a chance in the PL.
Chaplow in particular would do well for us I think.

OK here's the BUT...
WTF were the club thinking in giving the away fans the Northam end???? what an insult to our biggest support/noise base!!!!
Decision was even worse than the **** up when the pitchside advertising carred on flashing throughout the minute's silence on Remembrance day.

It's at times like this you think NC really doesn't get it. Easy to put the away fans in the Itchen (sorry Itchen) and we should have given the 1st team defence a rest.

Ah well... at least the cup is out of the way now & we're playing well enough for a mid-table finish - well done Nigel- GREAT display against Arsenal, good away results at Fulham & Stoke, now lets beat Villa !!!

Oh, an can we have Kelvin back in goal please?!

Get real, it wasn't the Clubs option to have the Chelsea supporters where they were, it was the only way to accomodate them in a controlled environment in line with the rules.

The problem is our fan base is hugely middle class, even at the Dell the seats would only join in occassionally however thanks to terracing all round in the 70's and most of the 80's it did not matter...
I have said before that to many go to be entertained and not be part of the experiance...away games are much better....funnily enough Mufco fans say the same thing...old Trafford can be a morgue but there away support is LOUD and clearly Manc..
Portsmouth fans although they have far too many Neaderthals have a passion which we only rival when we play them...nothing we can do about it..unless every true red blloded Saints fan verbally addresses their quiet neighbours to join in...doubtfull though...
Bear in mind we have never really had a serious home end...

Milton was for some singing kids, Archers was for us punchier ( when we did not know better), East Stand was for Dockers...etc..

Cortese and Adkins have to know what is happening and address it...Why the away fans don't have the Chapel is beyond me..the police can cordon anything they want off...

Then Improve the acoustics at our end and dampen the Chapel...

The stewards are like all jobsworths they have no common sense ONLY self preservation..when faced with a mass of standing singing supporters they pick on one or two but mainly leave well alone.....however when pockets are spread around the ground we are easy targets..hence why our own Vociferous end is required...just like every other blöödy club.

I remember the year back in the seventies after we got relegated & we had I think Carlisle & the seats were absolutely empty.
I also remember after Christmas that fateful year we went from near the top to being relegated & the Milton before it became a Family end was packed & singing whilst the seats were deserted.
Yes there was the chocolate box for kids but that was a very small place.
Now tell me why hasn't Adkins seen the need for a good organising & all round goalie?
Why hasn't he realised through all the goals scored & those conceded our defence just ain't up to it?

No shame in losing to Chelsea. Different class - and losing to QPR meant we were always facing them on the rebound. Need to get going in the transfer window now - mid table finish still within touching distance. Need to replace average squad players with abit of quality and think we can really push on from here. Just hope it's not all done at the end of January though

I reckon we stick with Boruc hes getting far to much hassle he will come good as we all know Nige was a keeper so keep the faith! I see no reason to want to sign Butland that would just be a waste of money, Gazza has far much more potential in my eyes. and Luke Shaw and Clyne even Cork can play as a defender. Agree we need backup in that department but we have at least 4 decent defenders. Just that 1 of them is better played in Midfield. Think Clyne would do well as a midfielder.

Another masterful media performance from Nige. "Well it's never a good time to concede 5 goals; but we must take the positives from the game. heard today Fonte looks like he will be out at Villa. If we are going to bring players in we need to do it now. Other teams are doing it so why not us???.

"Bring back Billy Sharp"? I trust that's a joke.

The guy's far too slow and far too one-footed (and I was saying this last year) for this level. He'd never get a chance to score. You could see him being outpaced last year in the Championship: he'd be eaten alive in the Prem.

And who do you think is going to replace Fonte for our biggest match of the season so far. I agree with you we should play our strongest side in the Prem games but not in the Mickey Mouse Cup that we don't have a chance to win. All we have done in this instance is reduced our chance of getting a result at Villa.

Do you armchair managers all think that all the GPS kit used in all our training sessions is just for a laugh? Do you think NA lent him out for no reason? Or do you think he could see something you can't?

He couldn't outrun Championship defenders. He'd be a total, complete and utter embarrassment in the Premiership.
Just a fat kid from Yorkshire, who can score goals, why can't our players do that?
Hmmm. Have you been paying attention? We've scored 27 goals so far this season.

Same or more than:

You're right, squad rotation is b**s. Wonder why managers do it, then? Run them till they drop, I say. Then run them some more. Then kick them till they run again. That'll fix 'em.

Bet you a quid Ricky was glad of the rest. If we were safe in the league I'd be happy to see a cup run, as would NA. As it is, what matters most?

I applied for a job at the Samaritans and they turned me down when I answered "Yes" to the "Are you a Saints supporter?" question.

Apparently, one Saturday night every single caller a Saints fan Samaritan spoke to either hung themselves afterwards or jumped into the Solent.

I think they could let us do the job on Wednesdays though, provided there's no mid-week match.

Warrens what about under the west stand?
I remember the year back in the seventies after we got relegated & we had I think Carlisle & the seats were absolutely empty.
I also remember after Christmas that fateful year we went from near the top to being relegated & the Milton before it became a Family end was packed & singing whilst the seats were deserted.
Yes there was the chocolate box for kids but that was a very small place.
Now tell me why hasn't Adkins seen the need for a good organising & all round goalie?
Why hasn't he realised through all the goals scored & those conceded our defence just ain't up to it?
Oh! I use to love drinking in the old Warrens pub
Used to stand in the west stand by the Milton when about 14/15 more grown up than the Milton..then when 16 moved to Archers or West stand archers end when away fans had the archers...Tottenham 1978 was interesting!
Warrens pub downstairs if you were not a face, upstairs when you had won your medals...going to Fratton, standing in their end and singing a Saints song qualified...I did it and brother Nico, Dicky Barton (rip) aka Bobby Evans...and so on.
I went down with Gary Todd & a few Portswood boys & sang at Portsmouth

i love the FA cup always have always will, i love the minnows giving big teams a beating, i love watching/listening to the draw to see who we`ve got next and i just love the total romance of the whole thing. however i also love the fact that saints are a prem team, and i want us to stay a prem team. if not being in the cup this year helps that well thats a price worth paying. this year is all about the prem, if and when we stay up this season then we can bring in more top quality players in the summer window (as we will do this jan). we can then use the league cup next year as a 2nd team comp and have a good go at the FA cup as we wont be so worried about being near the bottom of the league.
losing to chelsea, no matter what the score, will not dent the teams confidence as much as being beaten by a lower league team would have done, and that might of happened in another round.
next game is a big 1 and villa have a semi-final on tuesday so should be more tired than us so that might help.
as for west hoof being able to turn it on (earlier posts), well they played a game less over christmas because their fans couldnt travel 7 miles to arsenal due to the tubes being on strike!

Actally we drew 3-3 with them in 1977 at their ground..Cloughie was in charge we must have taken 10.000 our football special and 2 other were late we got into ground 25 mins late! on the side next to the trent end. First stand they redeveloped all terracing back then.
Peter Wells in goal & saved how many penalties?
I was there at that game I ran on the pitch at West Brom in the cup I've been all over this country with the saints I remember Ipswich which was a normal time game but got switched to the evening & we were there for a 3o'clock kick off had to wait around all afternoon & then we got stuffed.
I remember going to Pompey the year we won the cup & I remember how they were allowed in to our end by the police & I saw old men & kids being attacked most of the saints fans who could defend themselves were already chucked out .
I had to defend myself & I was chucked out.
I went into the Milton against Milwall & the Police put their fans in there so this time I attacked them instead of waiting to be attacked which of course they did.
I had enough of that joint the TA then went on to play a game I love to play RUGBY.
I saw a total difference to the support & the attitude on the pitch.
But I can quite rightly say Adkins Strengthen your defence if you want us to stay up!

Needs clarifying, you went down with Gary Todd? I hope you meant went along with him, otherwise my impression of you will have to be reassessed?

So...we lost a game to the European Champions who narrowly lost the the World Club Final...and who have spent money for fun and whom are on a good run.

I'd rather we lost to Chelsea than Brighton.

Its time to draw a blue line under it and focus on the League.

Southampton Football Club is a different Club to the past...we are learning and we will get there.

We have the World's best Chairman and owners and we will climb the League.

I was browsing through some old photo albums and found a press picture taken on 28th January 1967, it was in Barrow on our visit there for an FA Cup Tie. The coach driver dropped us off at the Rugby Ground and we had to find our way across the town to the football ground, on the way the local Press copped us in all our paraphenalia and after the game we found ourselves plastered all over the front pages of the local rag. It was extremely cold and we scraped a 2 - 2 draw, winning the replay 3 0. There weren't many of us! I was a bit more dedicated in those days.

that goes for the players - they want the plaudits then GO OUT AND WIN A GAME OF FOOTBALL

that said SAINTS FANS are magnificent and will give generous support to DOMINATE at VILLA AWAY.

COYR
There is a very simple issue here Red...

...all the other teams in this league (the best league in the world) have supporters demanding that their team wins too. Many of them support clubs that are well experienced in the Prem....and some ridiculously over funded.

Like it or not...we are the newbies here after a meteoric rise from a point of near catastrophy just a few years back.

I follow my Club...I will follow them always...I will do all I can as a supporter to help along the journey. I truely enjoy the brand of football we are currently capable of.

...so let's get real with the expectations. Ditch our manager now and we are definately deep in the brown stuff.

Back the team...stay up..then we can celebrate and push on. There's no room for quitters imo COYR
Villa have been shipping goals for fun recently.

THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON should be able to go there and WIN.

I'm looking forward to a good day out and 3 Points.

We smashed them at Home and can do so Away.

COYR
One of the few doubles we will be capable of this season.

Is 'we' allowed? Or is it another 'our'?

I have been a Saints fan for 36 years, which seems a very long time, but reading some of these posts tonight, I'm a mere Saints baby. First starting following them when, aged 10 and living up north, found football and realised I was born in Totton. It took 30 years, but now living down here and ST holder in Northam. Only could do occasional away fixtures around the Midlands back then. Best memory was beating Coventry 1-0 away first game of the season 1999/2000. First opening day victory for around 10 years I believe. The great Dean Richards, RIP, getting MOM. Also getting a good old fashioned kicking after beating Villa away 1-0 with a late Dean Richards goal in 1999. So high after the game, I walked round the ground to the home end with my colours on. They didn't like it. I'd do it again on the 12th for another 1-0 win.

I see the skunts are losing to County next. Hartlepool need to get their act together, it's very important the skunts come bottom before the -10 kicks in.

Carrying it forward to the next season would be even better.

No 'next season' would be bestest of course.

Two things to add to your quote...

1) OUR... As in OUR club that we support, we go along to watch OUR team, we buy OUR teams shirts, OUR team are the pride of the South!

2) OWNERS... something else Poopey seem to be missing (like points, a ground, a decent team, money, etc, etc)
The other thing with the word "OUR" is you can put a "Y" in front of it, you can then say things like...

YOUR Poopey support is a joke...
YOUR an embarrassment to football...
YOUR a knob...

Get the idea... It's called language!
(Innit!)
Speechless "Five"?
Or have you gone to find a "dicktionary"?

Or in Poopey talk... Using google (Queens English to Poopey Chav)

Gonoffingtosay "3n3"
Oar ave ya gonta finna "Diksionharry"?

You are half right again, we are just fans. As a fully paid up ST holder, I hope my cash and all of my fellow fans loot is being used to purchase new footballers to enhance our squad. When the statement "our bid is in", it means the team that we support, i.e. OUR Club has made an offer for a new Centre Back to strengthen the Squad, if accepted he will be given a contract, which in OUR case will be for a bit longer than a month, something which at the moment your sad apology for football club can only dream about. Why do u insist on being so inane, your obsession is pointless.

There you go... He/She/It can't answer.
Off to bed now or as in "five" language...
"Mummy time for tuckin"
(Yes.... "Tuck in"... Although down that way another six fingered smelly fish... no, won't go there!)

I think we are misunderstanding the message here, 5trop is trying to get us to realise that his club has gone down the tubes because he, being just a fan, couldn't help it. It wasn't his fault, it was those nasty men that cheated, lied and robbed everyone involved.

no seed 5 fish between them has a point! have you ever given any money to sfc? you know like, have you got a season ticket? have you got a shirt? have you got any memrobilia? have you ever spent any money in either of the clubs stores? if you cant answer yes to any of those questions then nothing that happens to saints has anything to do with you! if however you can answer yes then you have directly affected saints! also have you got sky sports? if so then also affecting saints!

this is a prim example of the fish reaction to their plight, they never cheered and celebrated when in the prem, they never wanted all those players that redkrapp payed all their money for! 10mill+ (i think thats the current tottal) fans never went to southsea when they brought the cup! they never called for more and more and better and better players! so nothing fans do ever affects the club! no wait hang on......

Absolute rubbish...no one dissed that sad fact on this site (or the News site to my knowledge). I really hope you aren't using that sad occurrance to try and score points on here.... ....now that would be really sad.
u look at it again. lots of thumbs down. lots of pompey fans were not impressed by a few of ur idiots.
Sorry mate....

Tell you what hacks me off about this site: one bad loss (in a CUP, not the league that matters) and you lot act like we've been relegated. Twice. And been renamed Pompey.

Get a sense of perspective. Get a grip. Calm down a little. We lost a game we could do with losing against the most expensive team ever in the history of British football. Get over it, have a pint and cheer up, you bunch of whining fucktards.
I'm with ya fella on all those points.
do people not realise that adkins is just a part of our recruitment strategy. And that there are a group of people involved in getting players in, and not just the manager targeting players and doing the deals.up till now they've got a few good players in,but they have also got some in who are probably not up to this level.so lets hope that the recruitment team are learning from their mistakes as well....and as you say.... cheer up and get a few down your neck.
Over the last few years... We have had a right old laugh and some real highs ..

Remember Plymouth AWAY ...
Birmingham AWAY in the snow ..
MIllwall AWAY and the WIN

This Season QPR AWAY

JPT at WEMBLEY and the DOUBLE PROMOTIONS...

To balance that the fans have had to put up with some very weak performances in the CUP competitions

Remember Palace AWAY
Leeds AWAY
Millwall at HOME
And now a hammering at home to Chelsea.

The fans are aware of the good times.

WE ARE P1SSED OFF WITH THE LACK OF PERFORMANCES AND SUCCESS IN THE CUP.

NIGEL has only to concentrate on the League and WE DEMAND better performances and WINS at Home and we start WINNING AWAY.

WISE UP !!!

WE ARE IN A BATTLE TO MAINTAIN OUR PREMIERSHIP STATUS.

WE ARE RED ARMY. WE RULE THE SOUTH(UK)
well said RedArmy with you all the way

we seem to get ahead then get a bloody nose at the mo, lets sort this and give us a win at villa the SFC's and the Insane Mob are coming and demand a win

TOGETHER AS ONE

COYR
:o) lol

See you at VILLA AWAY

apologies in advance if I don't recognise you as I really get into the game and the occasion.

TOGETHER AS ONE - WE GO FOR 3 POINTS.

NO FEAR.
NO SURRENDER.

WIN.

p.s We can sing about Nigel Adkins once he's WON the f@cking game.

RED ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRMY
PS Adkins only prepares them; players win (and lose) games.
that goes for the players - they want the plaudits then GO OUT AND WIN A GAME OF FOOTBALL

that said SAINTS FANS are magnificent and will give generous support to DOMINATE at VILLA AWAY.

At the end of the day ...

WE SUPPORT OUR LOCAL TEAM ..

There are a lot of plastics in the Premiership that come out of the woodwork when we play the Premiership Top sides - none more so than Manure and Chelski !!!

WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON.

that's one of the issues ...

If the Team had performed and narrowly lost 2-1 after a BATTLING DISPLAY - then most of the posters would have had a different message.

I'm told RICKIE thought his input would have made no difference.

Apart from being kind to his Team mates I disagree ...

Needs clarifying, you went down with Gary Todd? I hope you meant went along with him, otherwise my impression of you will have to be reassessed?
Went along with him

Well said Nigel... Nice to see the tan back... ;o)

Needs clarifying, you went down with Gary Todd? I hope you meant went along with him, otherwise my impression of you will have to be reassessed?
Went along with him
Phew! I was only joking.

We won the replay at White Hart Lane 5-0!
for old times sake- were you there
? i was in the Archers Road end ! what a night !!

I was lucky enough to be at all three games Forest away 1-1, back at the Dell 3-3 and at 5-0 at the second reply at Spurs. The Saints fans at the Dell and at Spurs were the best ever, I will die happy after that experience.I shared the joy with my dad and wife.
I seem to remember, just..., the equaliser away at Forest came quite late on. I still remember who scored it tho'....Terry Paine.
Time to get off the reminiscence roundabout I guess and get back to reality but it all seemed much more fun then...3rd Div South...whoa!

Actally we drew 3-3 with them in 1977 at their ground..Cloughie was in charge we must have taken 10.000 our football special and 2 other were late we got into ground 25 mins late! on the side next to the trent end. First stand they redeveloped all terracing back then.
I was there that day. Great game, great day out. Stood right at the back chatting and singing with some bloke my age I'd never met before. The next morning, I went down with Jaundice. I've never forgiven him!

Tell you what hacks me off about this site: one bad loss (in a CUP, not the league that matters) and you lot act like we've been relegated. Twice. And been renamed Pompey.

Get a sense of perspective. Get a grip. Calm down a little. We lost a game we could do with losing against the most expensive team ever in the history of British football. Get over it, have a pint and cheer up, you bunch of whining fucktards.
That!

Ah! nostalgia, Villa Park 7th January 1976, on my own in the Holt End! A famous 2 1 victory Jim McCalliog got a brace and the rest, as they say is history, found myself chatting to a BT rozzer on the station, he turned out to be a Pompey fan! Got home in the early hours as the game finished so late there was no through train home.
Ah, they don't make nostalgia like they used to.

I was at the home tie when Hughie got the late equaliser. From the Milton Road end, all I could see was a crowd of players and the ball disappear behind it after the shot. Then the ground arrupted and I realised we'd scored. I turned to my mates and said, 'That's it! We're going to do a Sunderland'. How they laughed!

Alas, being 13 at the time, there was no way I could go to the midweek replay.

There was a real buzz at the Blackpool 4th round tie and many others started mentioning Sunderland.

Osprey (anyone), if there's a spare copy of that Villa away programme going, I'd buy it. It has always been the one programme from that cup run which I don't have.

Our bid. The club make the bid not the owners silly kunt. Have you got your bid in to buy a share of your shower of shitte yet?
but u didn't did u.
What on earth are you waffling on about? Fans don't make bids for players, or the club, or the ground, or the land surrounding the ground, oh hang on...... No I was right first time!
no. u didn't bid, did u. nothing 2 do with u was it?
The meaning of the word 'our' has already been explained to you. Now answer the question - have you handed over £1000 to the pst?
no. u didn't bid, did u. nothing 2 do with u was it? u dont like my question do u? simple question as well.
I didn't say 'I bid' did I? Have you pad £1000 to the Trust yet?
no. u didnt did u? nothing the club does has anything 2 do with u does it?
I am neither an owner or manager of the club so can just enjoy watching 'us' in the Premier League without worrying about the day to day business. Paid up your pledge yet?
nothing that ever happens 2 the club has anything 2 do with u does it? u r just a fan
Is this an attempt to disassociate yourself from the years and years of Pompey lying, cheating and stealing?
u cant answer my questions can u? . . . . nothing that ever happens 2 ur club has anything 2 do with u does it? . . . . u r just a fan
Oh dear.... I appreciate that you're under alot of pressure what with Pompey's demise and getting your sister up the duff. Still, best not to have a breakdown on a forum eh? 15.1.13 Innit.
cant honestly answer my question can u. . ..i bet u think the lack of noise near u has nothing 2 do with u either?
cant answer my questions.

so terrible for people to brush past u 2 go 2 the toilet in a normal seat. u only go 2 the later fa cup games. maybe u should go back to ur corporate box and eat ur cucumber sandwiches.

Absolute rubbish...no one dissed that sad fact on this site (or the News site to my knowledge). I really hope you aren't using that sad occurrance to try and score points on here.... ....now that would be really sad.
