Southampton linked to Philip Coutinho as well as Davide Astori
6:20am Tuesday 8th January 2013 in Sport

Philipe Coutinho
SAINTS could be set for a £20m double raid on Italian football to land Davide Astori and Philipe Coutinho.
Saints have been long linked to Astori, the Cagliari centre half who is also being courted by Liverpool, in a deal worth about £10m which the club are hoping to wrap up quickly.
Now sources in Italy are adamant that Saints are also pushing to seal a £10m deal for Inter Milan’s 20-yearold Brazilian Coutinho.
The attacking midfielder was once being hailed as one of Brazil’s hottest young talents, and has featured for the full national team.
However, following a €4m move from Vasco de Gama, Coutinho has struggled to hold down a place in the Inter first team.
The Italian giants are understood to be prepared to listen to January offers for players who are not regularly involved in the first team after discussions took place yesterday afternoon between the club’s owner and president Massimo Moratti and manager Andrea Stramaccioni.
Inter are under pressure to take action over their squad after a 3-0 defeat to Udinese at the weekend left them nine points off the pace in Serie A at the halfway point in the season. They are expected to move players on to create cash for others to come in and one surplus to requirements could be Coutinho.
Though Saints have plenty of creative talent already at the club the chance to land a young player with bags of ability is obviously proving tempting, especially with Adam Lallana missing with a knee injury.
Coutinho started his career at Vasco before the big money move to Inter in 2010.
He settled in fairly well making 13 Serie A appearances and playing six Champions League games in his first season at the club, which yielded one goal.
However, in 2011/12 he found it far harder to break into the side and in January 2012 was loaned to Spanish side Espanyol for the remainder of the season, scoring five goals in 16 appearances.
Coutinho returned to Inter in the summer but has found himself behind Antonio Cassano in the pecking order at the San Siro and has started just three Serie A games this season with a further seven appearances off the bench, bagging one goal.
He has been more active in the Europa League as Inter make changes to their regular first team, starting seven games this season and making two sub appearances, scoring twice.
Saints’ relegation rivals, and opponents this weekend, Aston Villa, are reportedly also interested in Coutinho and Liverpool have also stepped up their efforts to try and tempt Astori to Anfield.
The Reds are also interested in Coutinho, according to reports in the national press.
They are said to have offered £7m, but that is some way short of Cagliari’s valuation which leaves the door open for Saints to steal in with a higher offer and get a deal done quickly.
Saints’ need for a centre half has only intensified after Jose Fonte was stretchered off in the 5-1 defeat to Chelsea with the club currently assessing the extent of the injury.

I feel the worst news this season (apart from Lalanas injury) was the fact NA said we are not getting a keeper. Just feel this could be a disasterous decision.

Pleased to read that a least Saints are considering to buy players but do we really need to go abroad? These two players clearly have no experience in the Premier League and I'm concerned that Saints are going to make another mistake in paying good money for untested foreign players. Why can't they get seasoned Premier League players with experience of this league who are prepared for the dog fight ahead in attempting to remain in the best league in the world?

One of the great (and yet frustrating to many) things about Saints is that we never seem to comment about speculation, so all we see is a hotch-potch of guesswork.
We'll doubtless sign some players. I'm sure that NA may well have noticed that we need some depth in the squad.
*After* we have signed them, I'll take an interest in them. I'm not having another month like August again, when I wasted hours looking up players who were never to become part of our team.

What do the Italian club fans say in the Echo equivalent over there? Hey if we go for talent of this calibre it's okay by me... I'm grateful to have a club and will support Saints til I die. Only One Nigel Adkins and very much Only One Nicola Cortese.. who deserves his name sung loud and proud!!
Believe me, they won't need us to tell them if they've failed as it will be plainly obvious to them.
Slightly better support for the team could make the difference during the run in. I'm quietly confident!

Wonderful topic for discussion here, hopefully some nice/intersting thoughts to come. Because of "time-zones" I find myself as one of the erlier posters for a change. So here is MY rant.
I don't care about the "other lot" down the M27 but I do feel sorry for their genuine supporters. I don't think that discussion of PFC belongs here.
Nobody "owns this site"....it is a fun thing to be part of. Does anyone want to read more about "bankrupt -cheating - history - shed - bigger crowds - orange faces....etc"
I think that by now it has all been said.
A little bit of creativity would be nice.....coupled with some good humour, perhaps some insight prompting, thought-provoking replies.
No folks - you will look below this post, and scroll, quote after quote-quote-quote-qu
ote, over maybe two or three self-important dimwits (with a two-word reply) who think that the rest of us are interested in that.... rather than the topic that we are all invited to discuss.

If we bought a player who then couldn't make the team I think we'd worry about getting our money back let alone making a profit.

The most amusing and interesting post so far was Seedhouse with SEVEN .. that's something else that won't come to much.. just further delay and endless prevarication ... there is too much debt down there for that to be sorted out quickly. Creditors will hang on forever. It will be years you mark my words.
But anyway .... Best of luck to Nige and Nicola with their hunt for our next players. At least we can afford to buy some.

There are quite a few players from the Prem we could do with, and who would maybe want to play for Saints, but the problem is the asking prices... Saints can only gamble so much assuming the coffers-door is now shut from the estate of ML... Also for me Nigel does not have the experience ( yet ) to be able to get the best out of all players and knit together a team/squad that is producing the best football possible. Of course time will make him a better manager and hence the conundrum... we are currently walking a fine line and survival is all that matters this season so if we can get a couple of Italian players on reasonable money plus an automatic £6-7M sell on if we go down then I don't think we would have taken too much of a step backwards. All teams get injuries towards the run-in and it could well be saints depth of squad that sees us home.

And so they face the final curtain
Chainrai, he'll say it clear
He'll state his case, of which he’s certain
He’s lived a life that's full
He’s travelled each and every highway
And more, much more than this, he’ll do it his way
Fans, they had a Few
But then again, too Few to mention
They did not do, what they had to do, without exemption
He planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this, they did it his way
Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When they bit off more than they could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
He ate it up and spat it out
He faced it all and he stood tall and did it his way
We loved, we laughed and cried
We had our fill, at their losing
And now, as tears subside, we find it all so amusing
To think they did all that
And may we say, not in a sly way,
"Oh, no, oh, no, not us, they did it his way"
For what is a skunt, what has he got?
If not a club, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels are now the words of one who kneels
The record shows they took the blows and did it his way!
Yes, it was his way

It does, however, mean they'll most likely enjoy a whole year in administration which will cause all manner of headaches for them, but it still won't be the end. I think what'll happen is the administrators will cut costs and get rid of players until they're bumping along at the foot of League 1 even without the 10 points deduction and the whole sorry shitstorm will just wither and die through its own irrelevance as even its fans decide it's not worth saving (which, in effect, they've kind of already done anyway).
MEANWHILE, we're lining up two amazing players from Serie A so, you know, it's not all bad news.

Yes, it was his way
The Beatles were ahead of their time when they penned:
'And in the end, the cups you bought were equal to your days in court.'
.... but you really need George's gritty guitar and Ringo's drum solo before the words just to add to the necessary, long-drawn-out tension.

Makes sense going into the Italian market as its Nicolas home turf, there are several clubs in financial dire straights, the EPL is a big draw to play in..
I also believe they would build in the same £6m sell on clause Gaston has if we go down.
I reckon it's just Ts and Cs now..

Seedy, that's beautiful but you do know next week's court hearing is only to set a date for another court case further down the road?
It does, however, mean they'll most likely enjoy a whole year in administration which will cause all manner of headaches for them, but it still won't be the end. I think what'll happen is the administrators will cut costs and get rid of players until they're bumping along at the foot of League 1 even without the 10 points deduction and the whole sorry shitstorm will just wither and die through its own irrelevance as even its fans decide it's not worth saving (which, in effect, they've kind of already done anyway).
MEANWHILE, we're lining up two amazing players from Serie A so, you know, it's not all bad news.
I do realise the situation but I'm in it for the longterm, I'm no quitter. I don't want a quick and final solution, we need more, much more than that...
Yes they look handy, let's hope we sign them. Another attacking midfielder to add to our collection. If only we'd sign a keeper, only having four concerns me.
I'm writing a song about this called "I love you darlin' more than a final adjudication", but I'm struggling a bit with it for some reason.
I think many on here are underestimating the attractions of Southampton to these young Serie A players. Nearly all the women in Italy have got moustaches. I couldn't settle there at all. It was like living in a foreign country.
However, there's a chef at the Cavalieri Hilton who is an absolutely amazing juggler with pizzas. He can spin them round on the tip of one finger and then toss them eight feet through the air straight onto a plate.
He would be great in goal.

But.... £12m for a centreback is a lot of money. Chelsea payed Bolton £7m for Gary Cahill last January which puts Astoris valuation into perspective. I reckon we have tabled £9.5m and both clubs will settle on £10,750,327 pence.

Gaston is a real class player on his day but we need more stars around him and seriously need better central defenders. Yes, ticket prices will go up eventually but I want to watch good football with some superstars on that SMS pitch! Looking forward to seeing who we get and pushing up the league. We don't want players who are 'up for a dogfight,' we need players with class and ability to get us in mid table this season and Europe the next.

Let's get the defence and keeper sorted and then, if we still have the cash, get him in too, but the other areas must be sorted first.
While I love all the 'Saints are signing exciting players, be positive' talk, this is looking like a repeat of the summer.
How about we secure our Premier League survival and then spend the TV money on flair players in the summer when our defence is fixed and settled?
Building from the back is the sure fire way to good attacking football.
Spending big money on Brazilian flair would be madness IMO.
We will get our money back on these young players, but only if we are in a situation to sell them on our terms.
Sorry to be a realist, but if we get relegated do you think Gaston and this Brazilian guy will 1) want to stay or 2) be suited to that division?
If the defence and keeper are sorted first great.
Fact: we have a good enough range of attacking midfielders and strikers to ensure safety, as shown by our impressive goals for record.
Fact: we do not, by any means, have a good enough defence to ensure safety, even when taking into account our great improvements in recent weeks, as shown by our goals conceded stats.
Fact: we are playing great football, have some great players, a great style and forward thinking ethos, a manager who has worked miracles with a patched up back five and a supportive chairman. Would be a massive shame if we go down having failed to address our blatantly obvious record for silly defensive errors, costing us results time and again.

Hey perhaps NA and NC have been looking at the Chelsea's Arsenals and Man City's and think we need a midfield player in the mould of Mata, Wiltshire, Silva... Also Barca are full of small skill full technical players.

Alan Pardew has certainly had a good run on signings as well and seems their scouting network is pretty good.
That said, there are also loads of very expensive prospects that haven't delivered as well.
For me it's all about having the right person in that scouting role - go out, recruit them for good money and it will save you a lot of money on players in the future.
It's a bit like a formula 1 team investing in top drivers, but not spending a much smaller outlay to get Adrian Newey to design the car.
I'd say that, by and large, the quality of our major signings has been pretty good so far though, bar Lee and Mayuka based on lack of appearances.
J Rod will, I think, develop into a very good player indeed if we can get to play him more regularly, but a difficult balancing act, could almost do with a season banging them in for fun in the Championship.

The thing with Gaston is that he has the potential to be a far better player than Michu is by the time he gets to his age, and that was reflected in the transfer fee.
But he also served a double function as a marquee signing who said to the world "We are Southampton and we mean business" which should - fingers crossed - make it far easier to sign the likes of Astori.
Nicola is a shrewd negotiator though and he won't rush a deal through just for the sake of it - he'll do what's right for this football club.
Which suggests he has four ears, two pairs and I'm starting to post like Confuscious..

One question I have about this is: why is a player that was originally signed €4m and can't get into the team now worth £10m? Surely, we should be able to get him cheaper than that.
And your implication in other posts that he's still carrying the injury is probably supported by the fact that he only managed two goals against Arsenal last week.
Look, you made a silly throw-away comment that he wouldn't be back before December and you seem to feel forced to defend it even though it's all looking a bit silly. Frankly, you're looking like a politician defending an utterly discredited policy. Be a man, admit you were utterly wrong and move on.
If it helps, mistakes I've publicly admitted to on here: I hated Guly and now rate him highly; I didn't see the point of Jack Cork until he went missing; I detested Artur Boruc after his first two games yet I'd now pick him out of the three we have. See; not hard, really.

Comparing the Michu signing to Ramirez is a bit unfair. For all the Michu's out there there are loads who didn't make it. Virtually every manager in the Premier League is wishing they'd spotted him.

Yes, it was his way

in method that has worked well for decades. Footballers on the other hand are more prone to other muscles protecting the injury due to the nature of the game and its common for footballers who return too soon following deadlegs, hairline fractures and muscle tears to go onto get secondary problems, hamstrings being one. Barca and other European clubs use a technique called "intra-muscular electrotherapy" to speed up recovery. Its something I had once on an injury and this technique can accurately measure nerve-repair in such injuries. I have heard that many top flight English clubs are not as thorough in this area.

Comparing the Michu signing to Ramirez is a bit unfair. For all the Michu's out there there are loads who didn't make it. Virtually every manager in the Premier League is wishing they'd spotted him.

'shouldn't' or 'won't'? Well, model verb usage is somewhat weird really. I have a lot of difficulty explaining to the French that 'must' is a strong obligation, whereas 'have to' is generally a bit softer. Then I tell them about this fantastic footballer who scored shedloads of great goals a few years ago - 'You MUST watch Le Tissier's best goals on You Tube.'
Well, most of them think it's their homework and they'll get b0ll0cked if they aren't able to describe how Le Tiss jinxed his way past four Blackburn players before passing the ball 40 yards past Tim Flowers into the top corner. Then I explain that the use of MUST is a wee bit stupid, especially when I add that the negatives are completely different.
Anyway, let's accept that Ramirez or anyone else SHOULDN'T play when it COULD worsen things for the player and/or club .
For what it's worth, on this thread, when he's not trying to defend his stance on Ramirez, and given that he hasn't so far called those who take a different point of view 'idiots', he's made some interesting points about Italian Football's financial poo!
Perhaps EUFA could start a new league for all the teams who won't survive the current crisis. They could call it the 'Europa Premier-in-the-sh!t League. Any ideas as to who could be among the founding members?

Anyway, even the so called medical experts said John Terry would be back mid December and I can't remember them apologising for that diagnosis.
Any ideas as to who could be among the founding members?

in method that has worked well for decades.

And let's be honest here, if we bid exactly the same price as Liverpool, in this example, which team is the player most likely to choose?
Therefore, for the like of Saints to sign this quality of player we need to bid more to entice the selling club to at least persuade the player to talk to us.
The same principal (of offering more) probably applies when talking wages with the player/agent etc.
Hence why he may now be worth up to £10 million.

MGRA any views?
They are the same ones who said that players' bodies are made up of 98% water and therefore they could drown if they had a big glass of water at half time. And I know for a fact that one of them got his poor old auntie to have colonic irrigation because he was hoping he might find some old jewellery.
When Gaston first got his dead leg, they were on here talking about how flamingos go to sleep on one leg - simply refusing to acknowledge my point that a sleeping leg is not the same as a dead leg and that Gaston is genetically so far removed from the flamingo that the point is completely irrelevant anyway.
Sometimes I despair at the inanity on here.

Comparing the Michu signing to Ramirez is a bit unfair. For all the Michu's out there there are loads who didn't make it. Virtually every manager in the Premier League is wishing they'd spotted him.

One thing I'm not planning on doing is what I did in August, namely taking a view on whom we may or may not sign.

That said, I just want some quick and easy deals now. No mucking about like the Astori deal.
We do not need Champions League standard defenders.
It's like we're looking to jump from Championship level players to potential World-class (potentially equalling expensive but unproven in England) without bothering to look in between.
Didn't see West Ham spending a huge amount on their defence, but there is no doubting what they did buy will most likely keep them up this season.
They are way worse than us in all other departments, but Reid, Collins and Jääskeläinen have made them nicely solid without any big outlay.
I disagree with their policy of buying old, tried and tested in the likes of Joe Cole and attacking areas, but central defence and goal is a totally different thing.
It isn't rocket science and I simply don't believe the players aren't out there. Sunderland, Stoke, Villa, Everton, Fulham, Liverpool and Swansea have squad keepers and defenders that are better than our back up players, but that's just at first glance. Why can't we just do what other clubs do and go in for them?

MGRA wrote:You are incorrect, Rambo was physically fit when he returned, not match fit, for obvious reasons, his present injury is on the other leg and was picked up in the Arsenal game. No one has disputed that some Italian Clubs are financially strapped, that's why it make sense to approach them for players, but NC will not be taken for a mug, and does not suffer fools gladly. He will fight for the best deal, if that is not fairly available he will walk away.
SaintJD wrote:I was proved right on Gaston, he was not fit when he returned ( in fact a million miles away from fitness ) and my source on that one was spot on as usual. The fact he played whilst injured just makes Saints foolish in some peoples opinion. Regards business networks, a mate of mine happens to be involved directly with the champions league sponsorship events and was telling me just how stuffed some of the Italian clubs are.... his particular company was asked to pay up front in September for all colateral sponsorship issues for 2 certain clubs and they politely refused. He also explained that some of the creditors are not financial instutions and under Italian law some of them have greater rights to claw back their "investments"....

Anyway, even the so called medical experts said John Terry would be back mid December and I can't remember them apologising for that diagnosis.
This actually made me a lot worse.
Full marks for replying though. Nigel just pinches all my ideas with no acknowledgement at all.

I see that 'out of favour Leicester midfielder' Neil Danns has joined Huddersfield on loan. I remember some people thought he'd be the answer to our midfield. (I never really had an opinion because I'd not seen much of him).
Anyway, unlike Michu, this doesn't now seem to be one that got away.
But it's a reminder of our progress, isn't it? Neil Danns or Gaston Ramirez? Not hard, is it?

They've done a brilliant job, but we do need a couple of cheap defenders and a keeper.
It's obvious, it's been obvious for months and now I hope and trust they go and bring them in before we lose too many more points.
I'm over the moon that we've got to this point of the season still with a real chance of being safe, even comfortably safe.
That's an amazing effort for me, especially because we've stuck by our manager and ethos and haven't shown signs of panic.
Would be a real shame if that whole programme was de-railed because we don't get the basics right, but I'm sure they will. Let's face it, everyone on here, and in the media and probably in football knows where we need to strengthen this window and I'm sure NA and NC know better than anyone, whatever they may say to manage team morale in interviews.

Slavish pack mentality will help you in bucket loads on here and all those who spent to travel to West Ham and thought Gaston played a blinder and was match-fit got what they wanted out of the experience and I dare say had a jolly good laugh at my expense, which is sooper. Not so sure on the "no money" theory though...offers appear to have been made which suggests to me that there will be some player investment.

So, warrens76, I'm led to agree with you - some work on just keeping up normal service when we're winning might work wonders.

I think we need a midfield general or playmaker...someone who dictates the pace of the game and whether heads are up or down.
Pirlo, Xavi, even Wiltshire dictate the modern day game, whereas Kean, Souness, Case back in the day.
And you have to invest to get that as we don't currently have it.

Saints are after 2 players of international standard.
I think hangeland would be a good 2nd addition along with Astori and then we have 5 CB's fighting for 2 places. Or do a Chelsea and put one of them in midfield. Never thought they would need to do that with the amount of world class midfielders they sign each season! And posters on here question about signing 1 more midfielder, always have 2 players for each position and rotate.

What say we re-visit this topic on the 1st February after there has been no big signings in January and you may then like to re-consider your position. Not for the first time you become offensive and objectionable when you hear something you don't like. Probably you've inhaled too much gas dear boy!
