Scott Mitchell’s dreams of stardom in the Lakeside World Darts Championships may have been thwarted by illness.

Diabetic Mitchell, from Bransgore on the edge of the New Forest, never looked himself as he bowed out of the competition at Frimley Green last night and later revealed he had been taken unwell.

He said: “I must have just got my insulin levels wrong. I was dizzy and just felt wrong.”

England international Mitchell made it to the second round in his fourth attempt after beating Scotland’s Mark Barilli.

He was helped from the venue to his room and recovered later in the evening.

He added: “It’s a shame after trying so hard. The highs and lows in this game are so big – especially when they come so close together.

“But I won’t give up trying and will be back again.”
