Saints fans still backing Nigel Adkins
8:26am Friday 11th January 2013 in Sport
NIGEL ADKINS
Nigel Adkins has again received the support of the Saints fans despite fresh reports suggesting the club are reviewing his position.
Roberto Di Matteo, who has been regularly linked with the manager’s post following his departure from Chelsea earlier this season, is said to be one of two names being lined up for the job by St Mary’s chairman Nicola Cortese, should Adkins be sacked.
The other is former Spurs manager Christian Gross, who is currently out of work after being sacked by Swiss side Young Boys in April last year.
Adkins came within a whisker of the sack in early November, following a 2-0 loss to West Brom that left Saints rooted to the bottom of the table.
But he has since overseen an impressive upturn in form, leading the club out of the relegation zone ahead of tomorrow’s crunch visit to fellow strugglers Aston Villa.
Throughout the season, he has retained the backing of the overwhelming majority of Saints supporters, with chants of “There’s only one Nigel Adkins” regularly belted out home and away.
Nick Illingsworth, who runs fans’ website theuglyinside.net, reaffirmed that support in light of the latest rumours.
He said: “I haven’t found many Saints fans who would want to see Nigel sacked.
“All the supporters are grateful for the work he has done over the last few years and, given that, he deserves his chance.
“Having dragged us out of the bottom three after a baptism of fire at the start of the season, he’s shown he has got the nous to steer us clear of relegation if we can make some crucial signings.”

I am concerned as to how hands on he is with regard to transfers - and his possitivity, "fantastc point" can be a bit annoying but i cant see anyone ese better for the job.
Just need to tighten up at the back - 19 points given away from winning positions is not good enough especially againts clubs that you must hope to beat.

No to all the above... but.. I think his man has the potential to be one of the great managers. We play great football. We are united as a club again.
And this may be heresey but even if the worse happened and we dont stay up the lessons learned this year will be invaluable for the future.
Look what happened to West Brom. It took them a few years up and down. But see what they are doing now.
Stick with Nigel. Lets see the project through.
Take the long view and for the sake of another cliche... look at the big picture.
Lets stick together and remember what it was like only a few years ago. Managers in and out. The Dark Lord in charge.
Villa tomorrow. Another away day sell out.

Just need that bit of strengthening.
I would imagine transfers are a joint consideration but NC does the actual round the table dealings.

And do you really believe that NA has no say what so ever on transfer targets?
Never heard so much cr@p!
We are a Premiership football team, run as a professional organisation, we have a scouting network across the world so of course NA doesnt go to games across the world thats what we have scouts for, players are identified by the scouting network, potential targets are identified, watched, then team SAINTS, NC/LR/NA and all the other coaches decide if that particular player fit the bill, age, attitude, past history, fitness ect, ect, then if any deal is to be done NC does the business, that is how every Premiership football club is run, professionally!

Presumably Nigel decides where we need players to address a shortfall in any particular position, it is submitted to whoever is in charge of scouting, once targets are worked out, it would be put into the hands of NC and co. to negotiate a sensible deal and then to rubber stamp the purchases, but I assume that all of the Committee would working together and I am sure that NA would have a strong influence on the end result. Conspiracy theorists would have you believe that NC picks the players, I can't see that, as he has no expertise in the subject, but still has the final word whatever happens.

Events over the past couple of years have shown that journalist will do anything to produce a headline; clearly the team at the DE have some sort of agenda against our club. What they can’t stand is the way the regular supporters continually give Nigel Adkins 100% support despite the venomous rubbish regularly spewed out by this ailing local rag.

The thing is we have to be prepared for Villa, they don't often turn up but when they do they can be awesome. Liverpool's next home game after they beat us reasonably comfortable was Villa and they put 4 past Liverpool.
Their tails will be up after getting humiliated by Bradford and we have to be prepared to fight it out. We cannot afford to let them get ahead, if we can score first I think we can win.
Fonte will be missed I am afraid. Al ot will depend on Hoover on the deck and how we close Benteke down. He can be a handful when he is up for it.

Here's some Aston Villa team news from BBC Sport's Pat Murphy:
"Paul Lambert says Darren Bent's knee injury is not as bad as first feared after the Bradford match - but he won't be fit for tomorrow's match against Southampton. Nor will Marc Albrighton or Chris Herd (both foot injuries).
"Shay Given is struggling with a hamstring strain but Brad Guzan will return. Ron Vlaar is back in training (calf) after missing the last six months with a calf injury but will miss out tomorrow. Richard Dunne expects to resume training next week after a groin operation and could be available at end of January."

For me NIGEL is the man to take our club forward. We had a five year plan to get where we are and we done it early. So dont expect to win this league in the spare time that Nigel has created, we hav'nt heard the next plan or time scale of when we will be at the other end of the table.

Since September 2010, under wise control and with substantial infrastructure and squad investment and under one manager, we've enjoyed a spiral of success.
Supporters are behind Nicola and Nigel for very obvious reasons.
Markus planted an excellent seed in well prepared soil and a strong tree is growing. Those who want heads to roll are rather like those impatient gardeners who keep pulling up the plant to see if the roots are growing.
They should throw in the trowel.

I dont want to be Anti-Adkins as he is a good man who has done a fantastic job, his enthusiasm and character is infectious, but i do feel he has made some huge tactical errors this season. Ignoring the cup as it would of been a club decision not to 'give it a go' last sat. The latest tactical issue occured at Stoke when winning and having the opposition down to 10 men, Nige takes off any width we have and went 5 at the back inviting pressure, when the done thing is to normally keep the ball and make the pitch as big as possible for the oppo, in the same game he also only used 2 subs with SRL and Jay Rod both run into the ground and a game in desperate need of pace! This added to flaws in summer transfer window and further tactical errors against Utd & Wigan and ongoing goalkeeper farse, I would love nothing more than Nige to lead us forward into NC's vision, but could Adkins be out of his depth?

I think there is still a question mark over Atkins at this level but to me there would be bigger questions matks over the new two names mentioned in this thread.
Its a tough call for Cortese to make either way, as the objective is to stay up. and is that best achieved via stability or chchange.

For me NIGEL is the man to take our club forward. We had a five year plan to get where we are and we done it early. So dont expect to win this league in the spare time that Nigel has created, we hav'nt heard the next plan or time scale of when we will be at the other end of the table.

Even if you think he's not done a good job (I think he's done very well and is on target to achieve what he would have been asked to do) now would be totally the wrong time. We are on the up.
You only have to look at clubs who have stupidly replaced managers who were doing a good job to see that it simply does not work if you are banking on quick results.
Blackburn, Forest and Chelsea have all just managed to either create a bad atmosphere from disgruntled fans or have absolutely zero impact.
The only benefit of sacking a manager mid-season is the initial surge it can bring in optimism and spirit.
Sacking Nigel would create the opposite.
Of course the interesting thing would be (as happened with Pardew) that most people on here supporting Nigel to the hilt today would likely resort to the 'in NC we trust' response if anyone questioned the decision to sack him.
Whether the decision kept us up or not, I'm more of the opinion that the life-blood and soul of a club is about doing the right thing.
That is why sacking Nigel couldn't be justified in my eyes, apart from the fact that it doesn't make sense from a footballing perspective.

Our Nigel is staying, what a job he has done.
Also, with all this about transfers, I believe this club is run like most and Nigel himself said something along the lines that he gives the chairman a list of players he has identified, a list is also submitted from the scouting staff etc. They then collectively identify who are possible signings and who are not. Then it is down to NC and his recruitment team to make the enquiries and deal with the finances and contracts. I don't think this varies a lot across the football world.

I think you could say that at Villa, but this is still a tight unit based around players who have been together through thick and thin.
I don't think anyone who has been dropped can honestly look at their replacements and say they are better.
Remarkably, we seem to have a complete set of players without one trying to rock the boat.
Nigel doesn't strike me as someone the players would fear, but have you ever seen Lambert or Ramirez shaking their heads and throwing a strop when they get substituted? They'd have more right to than the likes of Balotelli, but they don't.
That's because they respect the guy and buy into the idea of the squad system and know he is doing the best he can.
I don't even see him being under any pressure. If we were 8 points adrift maybe or at a club like Villa when you have Bent, Given and Nzogbia on the bench, maybe, but not when you have the backing of the fans.
The only thing that potentially undermines Nigel's position, if true, is not having full control of transfers. And that is the only area we've struggled on this season.

In my opinion it is a far easier to win a cup (an easy cup run really helps) in comparison to staying in the top flight for 27 years.
I would far prefer to have a successful league season than a cup run.
If Pompey think they are a bigger club the easiest way to compare is by looking at our attendances when we were in League 1 to that of the attendances Portsmuff are currently getting at Notarf krap...... No more needs to be said!

. and suppose they saw some of these supposedly "insider" posts today .. and just suppose they are now talking about the so called disquiet even as we speak .. and they are having a right laugh ....
Just a speculative theory though...

As for pompey fans coming on here with their drivel. Well at least when we won the cup we beat a team in the division above us and the best in the land. That is why our win is shown every year on the highlights, because it was class. we also have more top eight finishes than our rivals and more seasons in europe. We have bigger gates, bigger fan base and better support. Keep the faith in NC and NA COYR
No more needs to be said!

surely you can do better than this?
or is it that you have finally realised that you have nothing to say?
your last few posts on this thread have been bizarre and clearly demonstrate a lost argument (or a very very poor attempt at winding people up)
Mind you, maybe its that your frustration is showing through and you are just lashing out in anger because Saints are in the Premier League, playing great football and so continuing their proud history in the top flight of football. Your club, in comparison, well its not really even a club any more is it. Just a bust entity, taking up a league position that it doesn't deserve. An administrator who is clearly milking every last penny he can get out of it all and a Trust who don't have the money to make it even a going concern. Not only that, you still don't know what the judge is going to say and the situation gets worse every day - don't even have a training ground anymore.
Oh but apparently they are going to keep the academy going because 'that is integral to the future'. I heard that the Trust want to make it like our Academy (bet that hurts, to admit that you want to be like us)
I wonder. When there's no money in the pot, no future, no ground and no possible way of surviving.... what's the point of trying to save the academy when it's not even that good?
Anyway, you keep bleating about your history, we'll keep looking to that lovely bright red and white future.

Winning promotion is a great achivement in itself, winning two on the trot is outstanding!
Never-the -less, this season, the pair have had a rude awakening, they have discovered that the Premier League is the toughest and certainly the fastest in the World.
NA has had to adapt quickly and under pressure and he has done a good job with limited resources.
How can people criticise him, when many of Saints opponents, have on their substitutes' bench, players with combined transfer fees, three or four times the value of the entire Saints squad!
I don't believe the claims of some posters that NA doesn't have any say in who Saints buy and sell, no man with any pride and guts, would accept that.
Hopefully NA's and NC's experiences in the first half of the season, have opened their eyes to the quality of player they need to sign this January,
The signings made last summer were, IMO a waste of a golden opportunity and money.
Saints future in the PL and NA's at the Club, will depend on who Saints buy and sell during the next few weeks, let's hope for all our sakes they choose wisely.
For NA to state he's not interested in signing a goalkeeper, is hopefully a ploy on his part to confuse other clubs and agents, if it is his genuine belief, then he is signing his own and Saints' death warrant.

I'm a fan of that joke club down the road, but there aren't enough people on my own forum so I'm a bit lonely.
I've just penned this new song to the tune of U2's Elevation that will be sung by about five supporters who turn up to the Notts County game.
It goes something like this...
Saints, higher than the sun
Please shoot me with a gun
I need you to liquidate me here
With all of these court trips
We’ve gambled all our chips
Bye bye, you liquidate my soul
We've lost our club’s control
We’re digging like a mole
Now going down, excavation
You are high in the sky
You make me feel like I could cry
Bye bye, LI-QUID-ATION
Whoooo ha ha, Whooo ha ha, Whooo ha ha LIQ-UID-ATION

And so they face the final curtain
Chainrai, he'll say it clear
He'll state his case, of which he’s certain
He’s lived a life that's full
He’s travelled each and every highway
And more, much more than this, he’ll do it his way
Fans, they had a Few
But then again, too Few to mention
They did not do, what they had to do, without exemption
He planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this, they did it his way
Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When they bit off more than they could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
He ate it up and spat it out
He faced it all and he stood tall and did it his way
We loved, we laughed and cried
We had our fill, at their losing
And now, as tears subside, we find it all so amusing
To think they did all that
And may we say, not in a sly way,
"Oh, no, oh, no, not us, they did it his way"
For what is a skunt, what has he got?
If not a club, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels are now the words of one who kneels
The record shows they took the blows and did it his way!
Yes, it was his way

Not Davis as he won't play so who will lead the team? There is no leader! No new signings. None likely. Defence now weakened and NA who is under enormous pressure to win causing him to make what are frantic substitutions.

OSPREYSAINT wrote:Nigel is not in charge of transfers. Sid Littles interview made that perfectly clear. I'm sure they consult him but it certainly isn't his say.
There will always be speculation, as far as the management is concerned, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Two clever signings and all will be on the road again, but there is not a lot of time in this window, the sooner the better.
Now stand back and imagine you're a player in that ethos will all that going on around you. Disharmony, unhappiness and despair but you're asked to honour and perform for 90 minutes and win a game. It's asking a lot isn't it? No, I think it's asking the impossible.
Until this mess is sorted and it needs to be sorted by the chairman as the captain of the ship it wont go away. It will get worse and the result? Bye bye Premier League!!!!

Since September 2010, under wise control and with substantial infrastructure and squad investment and under one manager, we've enjoyed a spiral of success.
Supporters are behind Nicola and Nigel for very obvious reasons.

Not Davis as he won't play so who will lead the team? There is no leader! No new signings. None likely. Defence now weakened and NA who is under enormous pressure to win causing him to make what are frantic substitutions.

You're 100% right that we need to manage those players a bit though, although, judging by other clubs bar the top four maybe, it's the wingers and strikers that get rotated, everyone else is expected to plough on through.

In their short time together, NA and NC have presided over more success than Saints have had in donkey's years.

I grew up in a fairly poor area and had a fairly tough upbringing. I made friends with a boy of similar age who lived about 20 miles away but came from a similar background and we have remained in touch throughout our lives. Just before the war, when most of the country were concentrating on bigger issues, I was awarded a certificate which I have kept in a frame and has remained my proudest achievement. In the1970s my friend was awarded the same certificate, so that in terms of qualifications we were equals. But while he thrived and made progress in his life, both financially and socially, I am ashamed to say I fell off the rails, ran in to financial difficulties and resorted to crime and misguided deals to try and survive. My friend on the other hand enjoyed regular holidays to Europe and always set aside provision for his family to have a proper future. Several of his offspring went on to achieve international success. I travelled little, apart from a couple of embezzled trips to Europe in the 00s, and made no provision for the future of my family, never considering it important.
I am now homeless, living rough, but still have in my big bag the framed certificate plus another that I stole to make me feel better. I have very few friends left, although those that are can be vociferous in their support for me, and am generally despised by society.
My friend lives a comfortable existence, despite only having one certificate. He has loads of friends and family, is respected in society and his grandchildren have a promising and secure future. I am very jealous of him.

A HUGE dome containing 30,000 tonnes of salt is to be built in the Hampshire countryside to help keep the roads safe during icy weather.
The massive structure – more than 70ft tall and almost 140ft wide – will occupy part of a Highways Agency site next to the M27 at Ower.
The dome will be visible from miles around and critics claim it will be a blot on the landscape.
Come on Southampton city council, you can do better than that. I know you like our tower, but if you are going to try to make a kind of copy, at least make it a bit bigger. Maybe then, people would even take it in as part of the tourist circuit.

My question is - which of us is the bigger man ? Thank you for your patience
I heard your friend got into trouble, and was bailed out by the authorities and they gave him an almost free house - what a lucky chap.
Apparently he now has a rich benefactor who has been generous with his wallet - but I wouldn't necessarily trust him, as he looks a bit dodgy - and you can't always trust these business people can you?
I think you are the bigger man for being so honest about it, and I think that will win you lots more friends when they fully realise the truth.
I've also heard your friend hasn't been telling people about his free house - how unsporting; especially as he has been talking about you behind your back. Still - that's envy for you.

You stated that
"I don't believe the claims of some posters that NA doesn't have any say in who Saints buy and sell, no man with any pride and guts, would accept that,"
so If todays Daily Mirror is to be believed Alan Pardew is quoted as saying "He hopes Newcastle can delver two new players in the January window while making clear he sticks to coaching duties not striking deals.
But he says managing director Derek Llambias and chief scout Graham Carr are being as aggressive as any rivals in pursuing targets
I believe that answers a good few questions being asked on here don't you think?

You can however get a cheap flight from Birmingham to Buffalo from just over £500, why you would want to, is beyond me..

agree with a couple of posts above if we can survive this season, our manager and squad will have gained a massive amount of experience at this level. NA is astute and learns all the time.

As will Gazza, but he will need a bit longer, KD is getting a bit long in the tooth, but what a servant he has been.
You can debate team selection all day but subject to injury most of the team picks itself. The one position that is a nightmare is keeper. Nigel is critised on here over that but at the same time we all variously come down in reasonably equal amounts with all 3 of them proving the impossibility of the choice!

Once again 5 trophies, you really really disappoint me.
clearly my post must have touched a nerve since you couldn't respond to it. Instead you chose to make some inane comment about 'wanting to win' (I confess I didn't give it much attention - it wasn't worth it)
But ok, lets think about 'wanting to win'
you seemed to think that this is not a good thing to want. Strange. you are a football fan so wanting to win should be something you are very familiar with - especially this season since wins for your team are.... rare.....
So I need clarification really - are you saying that wanting to win is wrong somehow? that it lacks ambition?
but surely this is the very bedrock of what being a fan is about? wanting your team to win?
I want Saints to win - of course I do. I've supported them since my Grandad used to take me to the Milton Rd end of the Dell. (i had to stand on a stool to see! great days, shame its not like that any more)
And all through the '80's and '90's I supported my team and do you know? I always wanted them to win (how weird is that?!)
But it didn't matter if they lost a match because there was always next week or next season. And we stayed up there. for a long long time. And it was great. And when my friends who sometimes supported other clubs questioned me about my team and asked why we hadn't won anything I would always respond by mentioning that, perhaps, our continued existence in the top flight was winning in itself. That winning trophies is a nice thing, but it does not relate to success. Or at least not permanent or long term success. Because , you see, it's easy to win a trophy. It's far harder to stay at the top for any period of time.
So... I'm sure you would agree Mr Trophy person, wanting to win isn't actually that bad an ambition - its what we all want for our clubs.
However you choose to come here and make silly comments and attempt to get a rise out of it, clearly for your own personal amusement. I'm fine with that although some would say that gaining this kind of enjoyment makes you a lesser person.
But when you are met with reasoned argument (or the hard horrible truth) you clearly cannot handle it. You avoid the question, you avoid the truth. And that my fishy little friend shows you up.
shame really, but then what else is left when you have no club to speak of?

You can debate team selection all day but subject to injury most of the team picks itself. The one position that is a nightmare is keeper. Nigel is critised on here over that but at the same time we all variously come down in reasonably equal amounts with all 3 of them proving the impossibility of the choice!

Whoever is repsonsible for our transfer policy - and that does not seem to be NA - is the one that needs to lose their job. I don't think for one second that NA is blind to the faults that all, but poor deluded happy clappers, can see.
A more experienced manager is unlikley to have have the same "diplomatic" qualities as NA and that is likely to lead to conflict and mean that we would quite quickly be looking for another. NA may not be the best manager but he has proved to be the best man for the job as it stands at Saints.

In their short time together, NA and NC have presided over more success than Saints have had in donkey's years.

If you are saying that NA is responsible for the transfers then simply he should go now. However I cant see how any football manager would have wanted to take the bulk of our "back five" from last season into the Premiership. This is not hindsight. It was obvious to many others who may also be termed no-marks (what does that actually mean?) back in August. I don’t think for one minute NA is so stupid as not to have noticed these shortcomings. Perhaps some intended transfers did not work out but that is another matter?
