The hotbeds of Southampton FC support revealed - thanks to Twitter

Where do Saints fans live? Where do Saints fans live?

Thanks to researchers, you can now see where Saints fans from across the UK are tweeting from about their favourite club.

The Oxford Internet Institute has put together an interactive map showing where Twitter users mentioned the official #saintsfc hashtag from.

Unsurprisingly, most were in Hampshire, but you may be surprised at some of the more distant locations Saints fans were tweeting from.

You can also compare how Saints fare with other Premier League clubs.

In terms of popularity, Saints are the 14th most frequently tweeted about club in the Premier League, with 96 mentions per million UK tweets.

Liverpool was the most popular, with 722 mentions per million tweets in the UK.

If you're on Twitter, make sure you follow @the_saints for all the latest news on your favourite club.

Am I tweeting now?
Really don't know, and certainly don't care.
Though I would like to see a colourful demographic of Saints actual support-season ticket holders etc- which would show a larger following in the PO postcode than other smaller, local clubs for instance.

There is so much wrong with this survey...

Do all Saints fans tweet? No
Everytime a tweet is made from a Saint fan is the saintsfc hashtag used? No
Is it just Saints fans who use the saintsfc hashtag? No
Are all tweets geo-tagged? No

Not really representative of our support.

There seems to be a disproprtionate number of Saints fans in the Nottarf Krap area, what is that all about?

Yep flawed to say the least. The #saintsfc tweets from Pompey are just as likely to be from abusive sk8's than saints fans tweeting about their favorite team.

clearly proper football fans, living in a footballing wasteland, desperate to see and talk about decent football.

There's a few of us up here in Edinburgh then :-)

Admittedly, I've only ever used tw@tter once and didn't use a Saints hash tag, hence why I don't appear in the stats.

Too old to be bothered to tweat, but if all of us Saints around the world did tweat, that map - which should be global anyway - would have a wonderful red glow across it from New Zeland up to Japan across Europe and over to Canada and down to Brazil.

I'm surprised to see a few Saints tweets flying from the Sunderland area. I haven't found another one and I've been living here for 3 years. I would hazard a guess that they're always looking over their shoulder as the mighty Saints look to put them in the relegation zone.

What was the point of this survay??? I tried to find me and my m8;s in our area, but there was no red bits there, we tweet to each other regulary about Saints and many other subjects, bit intrusive if you ask me, perhaps they should do a suray on how useful these people are we pay for out of our well earned taxes. rant over with.
