Adkins defends J-Rod over diving accusations
6:17pm Saturday 12th January 2013 in Sport
Nigel Adkins has defended Jay Rodriguez, admitting there was no contact as he won the decisive penalty at Aston Villa but insisting his man didn’t dive.
Aston Villa were livid as Mark Halsey gave a penalty, converted by Rickie Lambert, that proved to be the difference in the huge relegation clash at Villa Park.
Rodriguez went down in the area without being touched by Edna Stevens but Adkins was adamant his man didn’t dive.
He said: “It’s not a dive.
“The lad would have kicked him.
“At the end of the day the challenge has come in and our player has evaded the challenge and the referee has had a decision to make and the referee has given a penalty.
“If the player hadn’t taken his leg out of the way there would have been clear contact and you can’t disagree with that.
“As there isn’t clear contact, and I’m not disagreeing with that, the referee had a decision to make but we could have had seven or eight this season we haven’t done.”
He added: “It’s a massive win for us away from home against a team close to us in the division.
“We were able to get three points and keep a clean sheet which is very pleasing.”

His player cheated to get a result and he is attempting to justify it.
Disgraceful, but typical and no-one is surprised by it any more.

Maybe Chris Foy the original selected Referee would not have given it, such is fate.

I would still prefer that the calls were right, all the time. We'd have had more penalties, as a fair team, and probably have won more games, too.
There's no way to reasonably expect refs to always get it right these days, the game is too fast and the divers are too clever, which leads to second- and third-guessing by refs.
So bring on harsher punishments for clear simulation, and lets start getting some support for the refs with technology. Goal-line cameras for tough goal decisions, and up to three challenges a game for each team on fouls and other decisions where video replay can be studied.
The purists will say no. But football is always evolving (I still remember taking more than three steps while holding the ball was a no-no for keepers, and the game is better for ditching that). Time to move on for video support, too.
Saints would be winners in such an environment. No matter what jrod did today, we play the game right under Adkins.
Well done on the three points, saints.

No manager will admit that their player is a diver! in the olden days footballs were heavier, the game slower, leg breaking tackles accepted and careers ended abruptly. So you're wrong fella the problem with the modern game and the root of all evil is money not incidents like this. Think what you want our man would have been injured if he hadn't moved his leg. He didn't appeal as far as I could see, so the decisions was the ref's. One injury was enough today, get well soon Luke Shaw. So a vital win today well done for keeping calm and carrying on :-). If you're an unhappy Villa fan then here's my honest assessment having watched a live stream and listened to Nigel's interview.
1. There's doubt as to whether the pen was given for THAT tackle anyway. Some suggest it might have been for a foul on Puncheon by Guzen. If so, Nigel has already said it wasn't a foul and I agree.
2. Assuming, however, that it was given for the challenge on Rodriguez, what Nigel is saying makes some sense. I posted earlier that had Rodriguez not moved his right leg back, he would probably have been caught anyway.
3. However, I also posted that I thought (and I still think) that Rodriguez dived. His leg came back, his body fell forwards and the timing was exactly as the mis-timed tackle came in. However, there's huge doubt about that. I could be wrong. So those suggesting Rodriguez should face a punishment for deliberate diving are plain dumb. (Lineker, have you apologised yet?) Rodriguez may well have fallen simply because of his momentum.
4. Most importantly, you DON'T need contact for it to have been considered dangerous and thus a foul. I remember an example when Thierry Henry, playing for Arsenal against Saints, was about to be tackled by a Saints' player (Chris Marsden). Marsden lunged two-footed towards the ball (not the player), but the ball was just in front of Henry, who then dragged the ball back towards himself and jumped backwards with the ball. Thus, Marsden didn't make contact with either the ball or the player and ended up looking a bit silly jumping two footed towards what was the turf between himself and the ball. However, a foul was given and Marsden saw red for dangerous play.
I can understand why Villa fans feel hard done by today but how about the countless late challenges by Villa players (esp. in the second half) which gave away the initiative on many occasions? Example? The one which left Shaw on a stretcher. It was hard to see if there was any intent, but the player did nothing to avoid following through on Shaw, yet play carried on and was only stopped (to Villa's annoyance) when it was clear Shaw was in trouble. On another occasion (maybe first half) Ramirez went for a lose, knee-high ball, won it and a Villa player simply followed through into Ramirez's foot. No foul given! So, don’t blame Halsey for losing, he did all he could to help you.
If you are a Villa fan, I'd stop moaning and start focussing on how you'll keep hold of your 'stars' when you go down.

The rules of the game should be exactly the same for my eleven year old son as for the World Cup final.
People used to be mature enough to accept that you win some, you lose some. We missed three points against Arsenal when Gaston's goal was disallowed; we gained three points against Villa. That's the way it is. It balances out over a season.
The TV pundits could help by trying not to analyses every single decision from fourteen camera angles. It can't possibly do any good and erodes trust in the officials.
Also, there's a rule to cover this: the ref's decision is final. Thus, it WAS a penalty, just as Ramirez's "goal" last week wasn't a goal.

Like any referee/umpire/lines
man etc I give what I see (or in cricket hear) at that point in time with the "facts" that I have witnessed.
Do I get things wrong? Totally, a batsman will moan to me when he hasn't nicked it, but they never moan when they have and I don't give it.
A bowler will moan about an LBW not given but he won't moan if I miss a inside edge onto his pad and give it
What I am trying to say is simple, people cheat, push the boundaries whatever you want to call it to win, to get a result for their team.
It is all JRod has done, it is all any of the 100's of players across the Premier League will do to get a result.
Did Halsey get it wrong? who knows I won't till I see it but I would love to see it real time no replays etc
Hansen et al will have poured over it a 100 times already for MOTD so their views later are nonsense, they have had a chance to look at it from 20 odd angles

Terrible day for the resident WUMs and trolls. It's bad enough for them us winning and winning hands down fair 'n square makes it even worse. They will have to take their sick sociopathic personalities somewhere else to seek attention and alleviate their deep seated feelings of inadequacy (likely caused by bullying in childhood). I expect soon they'll be on the Villa site looking for unhappiness to feed on.

Ok, although not Football I am a fully qualified cricket umpire, and stand to a reasonable level of league cricket in the South West.

Disgraceful, but typical and no-one is surprised by it any more.

Not that I agree that all fouls in the area SHOULD be penalties, but whatever the rules are, fouls are always penalties these days.

Not that I agree that all fouls in the area SHOULD be penalties, but whatever the rules are, fouls are always penalties these days.

until they bring in a TMO with video replay technology which will have an influence on the refs decision, all the screaming and shouting in the world isn't going to make a blind bit of difference.
For me: Yes it was a dive. However if he had not bought his foot back when he did, his ankle would be garnished with stud marks. Would it have been a penalty then?
who knows? it didn't happen, the penalty was awarded and we got 3 points in the bag.
It always amazes me that players go running up to the ref and protest like they do - the ref never changes his mind.
And as for the Skates coming on here and accusing Saints of being cheaters.......
well....
1) It's very childish
2) Hypocritical in the extreme (must we remind you again of how you bought the FA cup?)
3) I refer you to my comments above - you play to the ref, if you don't agree with his decision - tough. get up the other end and equalise.
Refs are human and you won't agree with every decision they make. Deal with it and move on.

Disgraceful, but typical and no-one is surprised by it any more.
I remember an example when Thierry Henry, playing for Arsenal against Saints, was about to be tackled by a Saints' player (Chris Marsden). awful conditions for football today but good to see every game in league football given the go ahead to play today, allmouth struggled and the ref nearly called their game off at half-time, just shows what efforts clubs have put into the infrastructure of the game. using monies from tv deals, not just on expensive players in the vain hope of getting promotion or a cup, no, money spent on improving the playing surface, drainage, stands and facilities for the fans. makes you proud to be a supporter of football in england, no wait theres always one!

City Saint wrote:I disagree so much with the idea of technology being used in footy, I'm afraid. I'm even against goal-line technology.
We've been denied a dozen legit penalties at home this season. We might have been given one we shouldn't have today; we'll know more after motd.
I do think goal-line technology would be useful though. I'm still peeved about the england goal against Germany that wasn't given in the last World Cup.
Just caught up with motd. A blistering penalty from sir rickie, which is a reminder that you've still got to convert them when they've been given. Nicely taken as always!

A very very big 3 points were earned today by the team picked and coached by Nigel. He made it hard for a fan like me to watch the last 20 minutes of the game with the subs he put on but, he was right 100% as the record book will show. Tonight we are out of the bottom three in THE ENGLISH PREMIERSHIP, now all we have to do is stay there.
I guess this will put the, Nigel's job is on the line if he dont win the next game, to bed. Well at least until the next game we lose.

At the game today, and just watched it again on tv first. J ROD was just making sure he didn't get injured. The ref has stated in the tunnell after the game that he gave a foul for the keepers tackle on Puncheon, result penalty. Aston Villa were not beaten by the resulting penalty , they beat themselves with their inability to score one or two of the simple chances we presented to the them.
On J ROD, when is he going to start taking the chances that are coming his way in a game???. On at least four times today he was too slow to take the chance when through on goal .

Jrod is still developing as a Player in the PREMIERSHIP.
He needs to release the trigger earlier and hit the back of the net regularly. He has the speed ... so in training he needs to work with e.g. Clyne and race towards the goal and beat Kelvin.
Jrod has lots of untapped potential for his £7 million price tag.
Artur Borac produced a CLASS save today and saved THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON 2 Points.

In the 5min segment of the game it shows 4 erratic challenges from villa players, each on Ramirez, puncheon, j-rod and shaw. R lambert got it spot on in his interview when he said he'd be more concerned about their defending. Villa are a young in-experienced team, I don't think there was any malice in the challenges but a bit reckless. If Jay had left his foot there we'd have another stretchered off, he was prevented from continuing and put off by a reckless challenge. Penalty and so was the one on punch.

We've been denied a dozen legit penalties at home this season. We might have been given one we shouldn't have today; we'll know more after motd.
Come back when you've been reborn as a non-league side with your record cleansed by liquidation, mate.
I doubt you'll last a season without more scandals as afc portsmouth.
There's no escaping your roots, after all.
There have been plenty of times this season where we've denied blatant penalties and have been robbed of preciouys points, perhaps this goes some way to addressing the balance.
Overall we deserved all of the spoils and as for the so-called dive, yes he didn't touch him but for me he lost his balance trying to get his feet out of the way!. You can see JR saying he didn't dive, I for one believe him.
Anyway, it's 3 points in the bag an Chelsea next. THis really will be a test and I'll settle for a point, lets not be greedy! COYR's! FOPAD! :o)

I have not seen a more clear cut penalty since Vincente shot dead Alioni in the 1987 Sicilian league match between AC Catania and Siracusa (though this incident was associated with a long running family dispute as well as normal match tension).
Anyhow, it's disrespectful of Nigel to claim that Jay wasn't touched. Mark Halsey had a close view and spotted the blatant trip straight away.
I think Nigel should apologise to Halsey, swallow his pride and admit the ref got it right.
It might also be in order if the next time Halsey takes a game at St Marys we give him a chorus of "The referee's a diamond"

It was a dodgy penalty decision but how many have we not been given when deserved.
Our attacking play is great to watch and if we could get a little more clinical in the box games like yesterday would be over quicker. Then again, thinking back to the Stoke game I’ve just realised that isn’t ever going to happen.

If Villa deserved to lose it was because of the poor sportsmanship shown when Shaw went down. Ramirez isn't a player that relishes relegation battles, he is talented, but is more of a luxury player that will come good when the rest of the team start playing good open flowing football. The Sky Sports second commentator was annoying too, when Ramirez was raked by studs off the pitch in the first half, the commentator flippantly remarked that it was the Saints players fault because he left his leg there, after watching the replay he retracted the statement, by saying it was a fifty fifty challenge!

Disgraceful, but typical and no-one is surprised by it any more.
An indirect free kick is a method of restarting play in a game of association football. Unlike a direct free kick, a goal may not be scored directly from the kick. The law was derived from the Sheffield Rules that stated that no goal could be scored from a free kick. This law was absorbed into the Laws of the Game in 1877 and later adapted to allow direct free kicks as a result of dangerous play.

Not a dive, Jay falls avoiding being kicked. Dangerous play by defender who should have stayed on his feet.
Boruc looked brave but erratic, not sure if he is the answer. Shaw was stretching to keep in the dodgy throw from boric which led to his injury.
Hope Ramirez gets his head up, he's not looking happy.
Like I mentioned earlier I don't think any challenges were malicious but reckless and out of control. I do agree bale and co haven't helped and diving does need to be erased from the game, but Jay rod didn't dive and the challenge on him and punch was reckless like the others.
Talking of retractions, especially as the official version is that the penalty was given for a foul by Guzan (harsh, if true), does anyone know how we can start a campaign to get Lineker (BBC) and whoever it was on Sky (Tony Cottee, was it?) to make public apologies for their comments about Jay diving?
For the record, here's a bit of what I have said about the 'Jay situation':
1. at the time, I screamed 'penalty'.
2. having watched a reply, I said, 'he dived'.
3. I watched a couple more times and said, 'I still think he dived, timing his fall, but added that there was huge doubt and he could have fallen because he had to get his foot out of the way of a lunge'.
Most on here take the view that he didn't dive. I'm still unsure but AM sure he had to get his foot out of the way, so am prepared to accept that it was THAT movement which caused him to fall.
So, Jay, if my accusations are wrong, I apologise.
In the end, if the pen was for Guzan on Punch, Nigel (and I) think we got lucky ..... and it's about-bl00dy-time!

Goalee's tackle on punch wasn't a pen - he's entitled to go for the ball.
Just because 'contact' ever takes place it isn't a foul. The day we revert to non-contact football I'll go and watch the local netball team.
JRod did dive. I don't actually think it was a cynical pre planned lunge to gain a pen. A bit like Suarez. More instinctive. My best guess is that in a flash both players 'cheated' and probably half a second later thought 'oh dear - shouldn't have done that!'.
It happens.
Is it the refs fault - absolutely not. I watched the game and shouted PEN as soon as it happened but later saw it was not. Refs are simply trying to manage a game and if football supporters and in particular managers and players want better refereeing standards then give them the tools to do it. It seems most players and coaches these days want to encourage their team to dive and roll around or make a tackle seem much worse than it is but don't like it when a ref falls for it.
Should we introduce video support more? Not while a game is on - except for goal line stuff at this stage. However retrospectively a panel should be able to give out yellow cards etc based on video evidence - but they have to say this is what we will do from now on.
If players are then penalised and get suspended more often the 'instinct' will change from automatically falling over or hand balling to staying on your feet. The result - refs funnily enough will start to 'get better'.
Who benefits? Everyone does and I bet the players enjoy the game more and develop more respect for one another without the ponsing around on the floor and 'please call my mummy he hurt me cries'. Furthermore serious injuries will be easier to pick up and so players get more protection.

i know many will say stuff them but it is a very important week for them and the go to court in an attempt to save their club by squirming their way out of yet another debt. the problem they have this time is that they cant just get do a cva and then not pay it, the judge has to decide the value of the shed. he will do this using the FACTS and TRUTH and THE LAW with HONESTY, all words not understood in poopey. if the judge decides that notarf is worth more than the trust (strange choice of word as its the 1 thing you cant do with the fish) can afford, then mr birch will have to close the club down. his job is to get the best return possible for the creditors, not keep them ticking over. i though wonder what valuation the judge has to use, if its valued as a football ground then its about £50, lots of work needed to get it up to blue sq standards. if however he values the land as just a plot of real estate with building potential, flats, houses, lidle, cashconverters
, poundstrechers etc. then the value must be above £6mill.
as for kenty pledge not to post again, well didnt we have another idiot who promised that? didnt thebooooorer say that if saints didnt lose by at least 2 goals to qpr we would never see him again? you cant trust a skate! dont forget that kenty tried to make out he was a saint and went to the wba away game.

We were easily the better side. It's funny how you get a different perspective at the game than watching it on tv or listening on the radio. The four of us thought Rickie, despite some great touches and of course the invincible penalty, had an off day and Ramirez wasn't bad at all. Clyne made a few slips due to being rusty and Jay Rod worked his socks off. We had a great chance to go 2-0 and Jay didn't take it and that was the turning point. Villa increasingly got back into the game after that and in the end we had to defend the one goal advantage - and to me that is the massive plus point, we finally saw a game out without conceding.
The pen was the other end from us but when it happened Dave instantly said the ref had played advantage and then pointed to the spot. It was the foul on Punch that he awarded.

For all of you, especially Slugger who suggest I'm a 'skate' why would I attend every Saints game is I was?
I want saints to succeed like all of you I just get very frustrated at what I hear going on behind the scenes. Sadly it's not as rosey as you all think. Please believe me NC and NA are at loggerheads and that concerns me particularly at this time of the season! Di Matteo waits in the wings one more defeat could seal NA's fate.
I'm increasingly frustrated at JWP being constantly on the bench. I cannot understand why he does not play. He's a holding creative midfielder. He wasvexcellent at the beginning of the season. How does he not get on ahead of Steven Davis? The only explanation is thatbDavis is paid more than JWP Davis is the highest paid player in the team even being paid more than Lalana and Ramirez!!! If this is the basis of team selection IMO it is wrong. Is that why Guly is in favour so much?

1. If I consistently made comments that were so negative that people assumed I was a WUM or a Portsmouth supporter, I'd be questioning what I was typing. Plenty of people come on here, comment negatively and aren't given that treatment.
2. "Please believe me NC and NA are at loggerheads". I've been hearing versions of that for a couple of seasons yet I have NEVER, not once, heard a shred of evidence for it. You have given no evidence and you're the only one shouting it in every post. Perhaps we SHOULD believe you but we have n reason to. Constant repetition does not make something true.
3. You rate JWP highly. We've got the message. Do you sit and watch him in every training session? Do you have the GSP readouts from his every training session? Do you have access to his medical and fitness records? NA does and he doesn't pick him.
4.The concept that payers are selected because of their wages has no basis at all (again). It's not "The only explanation"; it's one, very unlikely, expanation. What possible motive would NA have for doing that? Seriously?
5. Guly is class.

Just got back from my little cabin and seen the disputed penalty.
Did they give it for the foul on Punchy?
Definitely no contact and a soft penalty but how unlucky have we been in the last few months?
I think we might find ourselves in/near the bottom three in March... Those last four games will be make or break.

Serious enough response for you?
It's odd, I've never, not once, seen a post where people state that they have inside info telling them that NA and NC get on just fine. It does seem odd.
When you said "there is no money left so no signings" (which you inexplicably left out of your rant above) Baddesley Bill and I both offered to bet £50 to go to charity if you were right. You then laughably claimed that it would be "insider trading" to take the bet - for charity!
So, I'm afraid that I'm with James Whitcombe Riley "when I see a bird that walks like a duck and swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck". Replace "duck" with WUM and you'll be there.

NA is a man of integrity, look at the way he wouldnt leave scunny untill they got a propper pay off. if NA can stand up to NC about that then he wouldnt do what you and others suggest now. same with transfers, NA will sit round a table with the `transfer team` and they will disscus targets, its then the job of NC and his team to get those players. this systems has worked for years in american sports so whats the problem?

If we lose a game it is not the end of the world, bad news yes, but not the end. It does not mean the squad are all crap and we need to sack the manager and find new owners.
If we win a game it's great news but not the end of our battle. It does not mean everything is rosy in the garden and we don't still need some changes and improvements.
There is a good chance that we will get very little out of the next three, maybe nothing at all. If that happens I've got no doubt that we will turn Wigan into the next 'must win game'. Sooner or later we will lose one of these so called games.
We need to take a measured calm stance and not react to each and every match. What is the saying NA uses? Something about not too high and not too low - whatever it is, he's bloody right!

I posted a couple of weeks back about the lurching we keep doing and it appears we continue to do.
I remain optimistic. Are there 3 worse teams than us? Yes, probably 4 or more tbh.

Also, goals conceded in the past ten games, we have Chelsea and Man C on 9 and us, Stoke and Liverpool on 10.
So it's *possibly* not just a flash in the pan. Yes, we'll lose some (probably starting this week with Chelsea) which will bring Saintly..ah..sole and his ilk back on here whining, but the long-term performance is better than it might feel.

We have looked at the incident from various replays and Nigel is wrong about no contact between Stevens and Jay Rod if you look carefully you will see Stevens pulling at Jay Rods shirt with Jay Rod pulling his foot away and the shirt pulling Jay Rod was unbalanced and had no option than going over, this is even bourne out by the picture at the start of this thread
I am probably in a minority but I believe that shirt pulling is as bad as diving and referees should give more penalties from corners etc. when all the jostling and shirt pulling is going on, this might deter some of the bully boys from all the dirty tricks that spoil the game

Seed, one thing to remember is that part of the reason for the optimism is that it isn't just one game. If the season had just been the last ten games, we'd be in tenth position in the league on 14 points from 30 - same as Norwich and one point behind Chelsea.
Also, goals conceded in the past ten games, we have Chelsea and Man C on 9 and us, Stoke and Liverpool on 10.

My only gripe yesterday was, when ahead we should keep the ball and slow the game down, not panic and hoof! Good performances though and good approach to the game from NA.

In this thread it states "Rodriguez went down in the area without being touched by Edna Stevens" (forget the obvious mispelling of Enda Stevens).

No facts, no backup of your tediously repeated shouts that you are right and that there are major problems in the running of the club at many levels. You might even be right yet without evidence or argument to back it up, you're a bit like the drunk bloke shouting at the end of the bar trying to pick a fight.
