Rickie Lambert wants to score lots more goals for Southampton
6:30am Monday 14th January 2013 in Sport
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
Lambert prepares to take his penalty against Aston Villa.
BY anyone’s measure, Rickie Lambert has enjoyed a fine season so far – but Saints’ talismanic front man has warned opponents that his best is yet to come.
The striker scored his ninth goal of the Premier League campaign when he confidently converted the decisive penalty in Saturday’s 1-0 win at relegation rivals Aston Villa.
It is an impressive, not to mention invaluable, return from the 30-year-old, especially considering that just 18 months ago he had never played above League One level.
However, despite being just a single strike away from double figures, Lambert brushes off the suggestion that he might be ahead of schedule this term when it comes to goals.
“No, not really, I kind of hoped I would be on more,” he said.
“I’m going to try and push on. I’m going to get fitter with each game.
“I’m properly match fit early doors, but the longer the season goes the fitter I feel and the better I feel.
“I’m hoping you’re going to see a better Rickie Lambert the second half (of the season).”
Lambert, who wore the captain’s armband in the absence of Adam Lallana and José Fonte on Saturday, hailed Saints’ second away win of the season as “massive”.
“That is a big, big three points,” he said.
“Obviously, picking up three points to teams who are around you is massive, so we’re absolutely delighted with that three points.
“No disrespect to Aston Villa, but we know it’s not an easy time for them at the minute, so we tried to take advantage of that.
“We know they’re a good team and I think they will stay up easily.
“They will go on a run shortly, but we tried to take advantage of the situation they’re in, and we did that first-half.”
Lambert added: “We battled like hell. To grind out a 1-0, I definitely think we deserved it.
“But full credit to Aston Villa. Second half they put us under a lot of pressure.”

I LOVE the fact that after the L1 promotion people were asking if he could score at Championship level. After the Championship campaign some people doubted he could step up to the Premiership. Hope they are satisifed.

At the end of last season I predicted on here, that this season he would play as a forward play maker in the Prem.
This has come to pass.
Almost all of our attacking revolves around his ability to control the ball under pressure, then to supply the ball onto others.
Be they long, short, lobbed or deft little headed passes.
Many of his headed knock downs go to waste because and in particular, our midfield players don't get close enough to be in scoring positions.
We are going through a bad spell of injuries right now.
I know 1 man doesn't make a team but all I can hope is that Rickie is not the next because I don't think we have a PLAN B without him.
IMO we have the best and most skillfull English centre forward in the country.
I hope Saints youngsters are learning from him, cos he aint going to be around for ever.

He was brave and he was solid,we don't need another keeper if this boy continues to play like that.

As said earlier this month though, he's going to have to establish himself through one of our worst runs of fixtures, so I hope he is given an extended chance. They don't come much tougher than Chelsea, Everton and Man City and all of them offer different types of threats.
I'd be very happy with three or four points and no demolitions from those three fixtures.

I would argue that without Rickie our assent to the Premier league would not have happened so quickly, but I don't think three seasons is enough for him to be considered a legend, yet.
Kevin Keegan only played two seasons with us, but he joined us when he was held up as the best player in Europe, do you think he should be considered a legend? And what are you criteria for judging legend status?

I had a letter printed in "Liquidators Journal" last week pointing out the danger of any liquidator having to go into liquidation if they try to liquidate Poopey.
Over the years a number of knowledgeable posters on here have pointed out that Poopey is worth less than nothing - and any liquidator will have to try to quantify this.
But this could take an eternity as nothing is the lowest they will be able to get. If there was something that is less than nothing, then nothing would not be nothing, but a bit of something.
I came across this issue when someone on here said that half of all skates know less than nothing. To get a handle on this I had a psychologist analyse a statistically significant sample of skates. He said in fact that 72% of skates know absolutely nothing, but none of them actually knows less than nothing.
Anyhow, I now fear that after my letter has appeared, if a judge now orders liquidation, there'll be no liquidators prepared to liquidate..
I just hope there might be something wrong with my logic here. A mate who was in a KFC in Poopey last week told me that it was full of skint skates who kept going round the tables asking if they could lick people's fingers - so these skates obviously saw a way of getting something for nothing and this is only a very short step away from getting something for less than nothing.
The whole thing is very troubling, but I shall stay on the case.

Great player for the Saints but age, mobility and just the way he looks stature wise is against him.
I'd like to see him get into a squad to get that cap, just to say he has played for his country, as I know he'd be incredibly proud of that. Reward too for his loyalty to the Saints.
But sometimes you know a player is not ever going to quite fit at international level and I think that applies to Ricky.
Matt, James Beattie and the likes of Holt and Kevin Davies (how did he ever make the national team?) fall into that group as well.
Adam and Luke Shaw, maybe Cork and Clyne too, are another case entirely.

Ted Bates

Matt Le Tissier

These are amongst our bargain buys:
Alan Ball

Rickie Lambert
All three of these could be considered legends by some but I tend to agree with the idea that, like the Pope sanctifying someone, it's better to wait until someone has 'gone' before elevating them to the status of a legend. Thus, Rickie WILL BE a legend, but IMO isn't one yet.

Just an observation.
As for legends I think you have to say cometh the time cometh the man.
Ron Davies scored nearly 80 goals in our first ever two seasons in top flight football.
Matt scored 200 league goals basically from a midfield role.
Alan Ball and Keegan were already legends when they came to Saints. In those days though we had so many already made legends.
I think RL has been a catalyst and I do not think anyone can under estimate the effect he has had on the club. Those games where the going got tough and the day looked bleak, then bang, RL bangs one in. Its not only what he does, its how he has given others confidence, the knowledge he can turn a game on its head.
A legend? Well anyone remember Roy Of The Rovers, where the impossible happened. Three and a half years ago being where we are now was beyond our dreams. All the lads have been pretty special other the last few years.
A legend is someone you remember long after they have gone. Don't think we will be forgetting RL in a hurry

For one month you get a player who’s sh!t,
Then he leaves you baby if you can’t pay for it.
Did ‘Arry disappoint you or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had money and now you have to go without.
Well it's...
Too late, tonight, to drag your past out into the light.
We're one, but we're not the same
We don’t have to carry each other, carry each other
One...
Did you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to pay your debt?
Are you hoping to play Jesus?
Well you’ve got Connolly instead.
Did you ask too much? More than a lot.
We owe you nothing, now it's all you’ve got.
We're one, but we're not the same,
Well, we hurt each other and we’ll do it again.
You say Kanu’s a legend, Sol’s a different class,
Guy is your saviour and the PST will last,
You ask the fans to pack the park but they cannot be 4rsed.
And I can't be holding on to what you got
When all you’ve got’s the past.
One pitch, one shed,
One judge, he’s got to do what he should,
One court case, then you’re dead.
One life, with each other, your sister is your mother.
One life, but we're not the same,
We don’t have to carry each other, carry each other.

Set the team up to get him at least just outside the area withbthe ball and he will shoot, and more often score.
Could you say the same for Bent, Carroll, Welbeck, and I'm running out of other English players he is 'behind' when it comes to being called up?
He has also adjusted his game this year to supply and take the pressure off if the defence by holding the ball up.
Yes £2m for Michu was good, but half of that on Rickie makes him as good a value as Van Persie at £24m!?

But I'm glad you've brought it up because, while watching the Villa match on t'Internet and watching Rickie dropping back into the role behind Jay, my mind went back to Channon.
He was my first Saints hero. My first Saints shirt had an 8 on the back (I wish I still had it). I played 'inside forward' and whenever I scored, I rolled my arm like a windmill a la Mick Channon. Alas, our style back then was to suck the away team into our half, then punt the ball long for Mick to run on to. Dull but effective.
Then he left, of course, and then came back. During that second spell, there was a period when we lacked midfield leadership. I can't remember why, was it when Ball first left for Vancouver? Anyway, who else remembers Mick taking up a role in centre midfield and proving (like Paine before him) that he had the brains and skill necessary to play there?
Rickie doesn't have Mick's pace but there are similarities.

He was a hero of mine too and without doubt had the vision and skill to make play as well as score and think you are right in saying that (pace withstanding) he and Rickie are similar. That same prowess around the box too!
In 2006 I attended a 30th anniversary dinner of the FACup win, they announced all the players as they came in one by one. When Micky came in he ran through the tables doing the windmill! Brilliant!

I was going to reply to SO50, but as you've made the link with Retford, I'll follow it up here.
My sadistic aim in choosing U2 (btw, I once saw them at Skateville Guildhall - early '83) was so that Retford (our music guru) would get the tune stuck in his head for a couple of weeks. I'm sure the music of U2 represents everything he hates about commercial music.
If ONE does get stuck in his head, I guess his next post will read something like this:
'Let's hope Nigel and the Don have been busy in the transfer market since New Year's Day, but it looks like they Still Haven't Found What They're Looking For. As for Rickie, he's definitely got the Desire. When he scores a hatrick against Chelsea, there will be a wild Celebration. By the way, who else will be at Old Trafford? Whichever pub you end up in, I Will Follow because Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own. As for the skates, including Gloria, when Scunny Comes To Town, I know who I'll be supporting. Rickie won't become a legend he IS a legend. Right up there with the best! How many players from any club, let alone Saints, has made it in L1, Championship AND the Prem?
I would argue that without Rickie our assent to the Premier league would not have happened so quickly, but I don't think three seasons is enough for him to be considered a legend, yet.
Kevin Keegan only played two seasons with us, but he joined us when he was held up as the best player in Europe, do you think he should be considered a legend? And what are you criteria for judging legend status?

Rickie doesn't have Mick's pace but there are similarities.milton road wrote: Would like to see Rick go for goal from distance as he used to. It was the Pardew way, but seems under NA its more an arsenal style of trying to pass the ball into the net. Don't think we will be forgetting RL in a hurryI think Rickie is a legend in the making! I am amazed that with all these names being bandied about this morning, nobody has mentioned Micky Channon! I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes
And make it go away
How long...
How long must we sing this song
How long, how long...
'cause tonight...we can be liquidated as one
Tonight...
Broken bottles under skunt children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead quiet fratton end street
But I won't heed the PST call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall
Skuntday, Bl00dy Skuntday
Skuntday, Bl00dy Skuntday
Skuntday, Bl00dy Skuntday
And the court battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart
Skuntday, Bl00dy Skuntday
Skuntday, Bl00dy Skuntday
How long...
How long must we sing this song
How long, how long...
'cause tonight...we can be liquidated as one
Tonight...tonight...
Skuntday, Bl00dy Skuntday
Skuntday, Bl00dy Skuntday

In the end, it was one of the things which made me most disillusioned about the work of some of the bigger international development agencies. There were so many recently graduated upstarts working for the likes of Christian Aid and Oxfam, all who seemed to understand little about the causes of poverty, knew nothing about living in poverty and who all had one aim - to further their career. Furthermore, they all seemed to have been given the remit to ensure that THEIR name, logo and appeal was seen largest and heard loudest.
In the end, it was more about getting people to support their agency than to actually encourage the changes that might have made poverty history.

With Rayne Looney injured I can't think of a better English number 9 at the moment. Brilliant player. Should be capped.
Saints fans need to change the SRL song to 'he'll take us to the Champions League'. He has proved all the doubters wrong and Defoe is the only English player to have scored more goals than SRL - only by 1 goal so he definitely deserves at least one cap.

I took the bet, said he would, and I didn't even want a disclaimer if he got injured as I was certain that he would get at least 10
Shows what the idiot (like most of them) knows about Football. He was moaning this morning saying he didnt realise Lambert took penalties and we should re-bet
What an idiot!! Like taking Candy off a baby, I am going to burn the £10 in front of him so he can see it go up in smoke like his club!!

I don't like U2 because Bono is a massive pr1ck but it's ok to like 'One' because Johnny Cash recorded a version of it which sort of 'detoxified' it. Can anyone on here actually sing? We could make a version in the pub, record it on a phone and stick it on the internet. It's not the most sophisticated campaign in the history of music but it might just work.
I occasionally knob a young and gifted singer (I used to knob her mum, true story that) I shall see if she will sing the ballod ones for us. A bunch of p!ssed up guys in a pub seems fun at the time but sounds appalling on YouTube.
I cursed the doorman at the time, but now I realise he was trying to save our ears.

Terrified!
"The attack must continue at all cost!"
The fear of these words profuse my heart with the deepest fear that my life was halting, soldiers parched with the heat of the sun, the terrian was flat and solid and gunfire being fired maliciously across a rather deserted territory. Even this wouldn't stop me. There is no mountain too high, there is no ocean to wide to be the reasons why I can't achieve my dreams. I have been given encouragement, friendship and love during various chapters in my life, I have embraced many beautiful memories in my life, the one I admired the most was when my uncle aspired me to run as fast as a cheetah encouraging me like never before. These thoughts were compelling my mind as survival was the key to success.
As the gunshots were being fired dreadfully, bang, smash, boom!, The noises became increasingly louder, soldiers were being killed one by one and crumbling heavily towards the ground. As quickly as the soldiers scattered the ground there wasn`t much to see as bodies were being scattered like toys with blood; a stench so foul, so sharp, it feels as if the very fires of hell have been set ablaze in my nostrils and infecting my throat and lungs, pouring gruesomely out of the mouth and body like water from a fountain.
My anxiety slowly but traitorously began to grow higher and higher. I regained my realization immediately regardless about death. We were then instructed by the lieutenant to unroll our bullets from the gun. It was shocking!, Unrolling bullets was insane considering how soldiers were being taken down, but I couldn`t disobey the command despite death tolling ever closer. However my excitement and bravery evolved as my mind altered to an inspiration that no road in life is difficult to travel once you believe in yourself, your inner strength and your inner potential. Still I wondered what the future holds for me! death or survival. I knew I would have to battle, never to let go of hope and try to survive.

As the gunshots were being fired dreadfully, bang, smash, boom! The noises became increasingly louder, soldiers were being killed one by one and crumbling heavily towards the ground. As quickly as the soldiers were being scattered on the ground, there wasn’t much to see because the bodies were being scattered like blood-filled toys; a stench so foul, so sharp, it felt as if the very fires of hell had been set ablaze in my nostrils and infected my throat and lungs, pouring gruesomely out of my mouth and body like water from a fountain.
My anxiety slowly but traitorously began to grow higher and higher. I regained my realisation immediately, regardless of death. We were then instructed by the lieutenant to unroll our bullets from our guns. It was shocking!, Unrolling bullets was insane considering how soldiers were being taken down, but I couldn’t disobey the command, despite death tolling ever closer. However, my excitement and bravery grew as my mind changed into a hive of inspiration that believed no road in life is too difficult to travel once you believe in yourself, your inner strength and your inner potential. Still, I wondered what the future would hold for me. Death or survival! I knew I would have to battle, never to let go of hope and just try to survive.

You watch Lambert sometimes and wonder just how good he could really be with decent players around him and the right service. Puncheon is unable to control a long aerial pass first touch and seems to lose posession straight away. I always thought this was where Gaston would play as playmaker with Tadanari lee upfront with Lambert.

1. Slugger's English is as good as mine and he has a point about possibly putting a question mark after 'Death or survival'. However, I'd say there are two option.
a) Still, I wondered what the future would hold for me, death or survival?
(in this case, it's a straight forward sentence ending with a question.)
b) Still, I wondered what the future would hold for me. Death or survival!
(in this case, the first part is a straight forward statement. Then, the 'Death or survival!' sentence is separated for effect. Old school English wouldn't like it, modern journalism would probably love it.
In the end, it's your choice but definitely use an exclaimation mark or question mark, and not a full stop, which, in my opinion, would be plain wrong.
Talking of death or survival, 17 more days, eh? I think I know a song about 17 ......

You have confused me even more now Seed, surely the correct evaluation is somewhere between the two valuations by the two parties so it would not be too difficult to come up with a true reflection of the grounds worth within a couple of thousand pounds that is and if they both agree to accept the evaluation end of story, one thing that came to mind is if the administerator Tevor Birch is trying to get a lesser figure for the Pompey trust to be able to afford surely that is not what he should be doing inasmuch as he should trying to get a better deal for the creditors who are owed money.

1 martin was not recalled from palace, loan was ended by, and this is the important word, "mutual" consent!
2 luke shaw has not signed a 5 yr deal!
3 luke shaw hasnt signed any deal!
4 luke shaw cant sign a deal until his 18th birthday
5 luke shaw will turn 18 on July 12, 2013.
6 how in this or any world can you know what NA knows? answer you cant (had to be careful there).
an intellegent man would have done some research regarding luke shaw before posting about him!
You lot simply don't want to face the truth NA is nearly history!!!!
by repeating the sae old dross time and time again won't make it true

You have confused me even more now Seed, surely the correct evaluation is somewhere between the two valuations by the two parties so it would not be too difficult to come up with a true reflection of the grounds worth within a couple of thousand pounds that is and if they both agree to accept the evaluation end of story, one thing that came to mind is if the administerator Tevor Birch is trying to get a lesser figure for the Pompey trust to be able to afford surely that is not what he should be doing inasmuch as he should trying to get a better deal for the creditors who are owed money.
There is no such thing as an independant valuer. One lot would offer a free ticket to Skunts v Hartlepool and a 50% on a pie the other would offer him suitcase osse and a holiday in Hong Kong with free whores and everything!

shaw hasnt got a contract extension! shaw has a NEW contract! or will in july. shaw is currently on a academy scholar's contract, which is thought to have 2-3 years left on it. the NEW contract is a full contract, expected to be 5 years. if this was an extension as you state then it would only be a 2-3 year extension and thats not good for the player or the club. a little bit of research would go a long way. however saints fans dont need to research this as we know it.
why is it whenever someone corrects you, you resort to abuse and name calling. you do not know what is going on behind the doors at sfc. if i had the `knowledge` you pretend to have then the bookies would have lost a fortune! i have seen posters like you come and go on this site over the last 4 years, everyone of them has been proved to be wrong, and then proved not to be saints fans. if it wasnt so sad it would be funny!

Because he can't sign a pro contract until he's 18 he has now signed a letter of intent thatvhecwill sign his pro contract on his 18th birthday not for 5 years but foot four and a half years exactly as JWP has signed. I used the word 'extension' as technically tat is the legal effect of the letter of intent that he has signed I.e. it extends his existing contract!

I don't have to 'pretend' to have knowledge I actually do have the knowledge and information I post on here.
People like you are incredibly shallow. You hate to think that someone other than you knows more about the inner workings of their club. What you fail to realise is that people like me speak to people in the know. You rely on posts from people on here who think they know what they're talking about but don't and who have nothing better to do that engage in idol bantervtryingvto be witty and funny. Quite frankly it's pathetic and sad!
So horsey wind you neck in and listen if you can you might learn something!

I know he's not the fastest runner on the pitch but he's always in the right spot early enough that it doesn't matter. He's a delight to watch and he deserves every bit of success he gets.
Now, all I want before the end of the season is a Rickie hat-trick. Or two.
