Adkins hails 'massive' Saints win at Villa

Nigel Adkins hailed a “massive” win for his side in the battle to beat the drop.

Saints secured a 1-0 victory over fellow strugglers Aston Villa to give themselves breathing space above the drop zone and send their opponents into it.

“It’s a massive win for us away from home against a team close to us in the division,” said a delighted Adkins.

“We were able to get three points and keep a clean sheet which is very pleasing.

“It’s only two defeats in 11 and we have shown a growing maturity after, let’s face it, a baptism of fire in the opening fixtures for a newly promoted club."

I cannot see many points in the rest of January and February. 3 or 4? This is a tricky run coming up. I hope Saints can prove me wrong!

I see Fratton Park was flooded on Saturday. Must have caused tens of pounds worth of improvements.

It WAS a massive win.
One big benefit for me is the continued improvement of Jay Rod. His work rate is fantastic . The amount of 20 -50yd sprints he did was incredible. His finishing needs maturity. Always in the right position but he needs a bit of Ricky's coaching. Composure is the answer. He definitely is getting there.
Also still think Gaston is a home player and a sub to be brought on away when others are tiring. He wasn't bad, but just not enough for these difficult away games.
I can see a tight win at home against Everton, if we are not thrashed at Chelsea.
Great support at Villa. You can never hear home fans when we are away, but Saturday Saints fans were noisy and Villa fans very quiet.

Wednesday's match against Chelsea will be tough, no doubt about that. Even though OPR are bottom, we need to have their attitude on Wednesday. Death or glory defending needed.

Like many of us on here I guess, I was sat in front of a live link, kicking every ball and counting every second from about the 70 minute mark. My beloved joined me for a few minutes and, in a moment of total ignorance, said, 'calm down, you shouldn't get that involved, you'll give yourself a heart attack'. Some people just don't get it, do they? Anyway, she thinks Jay dived, so he probably didn't.

Seed, RedArmy, Yorkie, (others?) apart from the actual match ticket, the little Strassies and I are fully booked for Newcastle - trains, hotel etc. See you there.

Hehe, I've only had one gf who has any empathy with my footballing woes, unfortunately she's a Man Utd fan so that relationship was doomed from the start.

I'm fully intending to get to the Newcastle match myself - glad that they've moved the date as I'm going to be in York on the saturday.
