Saints are reported to be considering a £4m offer for Norwegian defender Vergard Forren - but face competition from Liverpool for his signature.
The 24-year-old centre half is due to start a week long trial at Anfield on Tuesday with a view to a permanent move.
However, Norwegian media have reported that Saints could try and counter that threat by making an early move which would force Liverpool to match their offer or miss out on a player they clearly fancied.
Forren has won five caps for Norway and has also attracted interest from Everton, Sunderland and Fulham.
