6:40pm

Chelsea come into this match having lost their last two games at Stamford Bridge. Interim manager Rafa Benitez has been discussing the reasons behind the differences in his team's home and away performances...

We are doing well away but at home other teams play deep and wait and there's less space. We are still creating chances but the main thing is to be more clinical. If we take our chances it will be totally different because the teams we play will be more open and we will have the space we're looking for. But if that's not the case, as in the last two games, it is more difficult. If a team puts 11 players behind the ball you have to find the space and be more precise.

Rafa Benitez

6:35pm

Here is Nigel Adkins speaking about Chelsea ahead of tonight's fixture...

6:33pm

Nigel Adkins has been speaking about Chelsea ahead of tonight's match, ten days on from the Blues' 5-1 FA Cup win at St Mary's...

I think with the addition of Demba Ba now and whoever else they might bring in they look a very well-equipped side to go for the title. It will be an interesting one but obviously he (Rafa Benitez) has started well in respect that they have won games, he is a good manager and has won the European Cup and the team play good. The experience of playing them here at St Mary's 10 days ago they have got exceptionally good football players who play good football and if you give them half an opportunity they will capitalise on that. Will he win the fans around, who knows? I think there has obviously been a big turnaround in managers at Chelsea anyway and I think you will find that Chelsea fans are passionate about their football club.

Saints manager Nigel Adkins

6:31pm

6:28pm

Good evening and welcome to the Daily Echo’s blog covering tonight’s Premier League fixture between Chelsea and Saints, at Stamford Bridge. This game was due to be played in December, but was rearranged because of the Blues’ Club World Cup commitments. There won’t be too many Saints fans complaining about that, though*. Back then, Chelsea were banging in the goals, but now they’re in a spot of bother at home. Rafa Benitez’s team have lost their last two matches at the Bridge – without scoring – and have an increasingly restless fanbase. They did, however, beat Nigel Adkins’ side 5-1 in the FA Cup third round at St Mary’s just over a week ago. The pressure is off Saints tonight, after Saturday’s huge win at Villa Park, but they’ll be hoping for a surprise bonus from their game in hand this evening. We’ll have the build-up, team news and match updates for you, at least for as long as it takes until my fingers freeze.

*This viewpoint will almost certainly alter after a couple of hours outside in these Siberian-like temperatures.

We shouldn't field a defensive team out when what we're best at is attacking, our defence won't hold out a whole 90 minutes against some of the best players in the premier league, let's go out to get some goals!

wrong both were effective ,and villa had to resort to hitting long balls over the midfield .with saints playing 4 4 2 ,the formation does not matter one uo front chelsea will just outpass us ,you just need to get men behind the ball .not for guly this .ward prowse in for gaston .try and keep it tight bring on gaston later try in grab a goal .leaving chelsea little time to get the goal back.guly is to lazy for this .closing players down .may put him on later with gaston

Saints should have been 2 or 3 up by half time...nothing to do with the ref.
You can't win a penalty if you're not attacking.

Game in hand so anything from the game is a bonus. My heart says we can get a result tonight - unfortunately my head suggests otherwise. NA will have a plan which I am sure will be well thought out. Personally I would play the strongest side subject, of course, to injuries and this would include RL (obviously) and GR (hopefully he will want to show what he can do when matched against some of the best midfield talent in Europe). Anyway lets go with the heart!!

Guly, FFS, he is more of a mid table clash player, although i personally would have got rid of him a long time ago. we def need the energy of davis and cork and spiderman this evening, they will be doing a lot of running and covering. J Rod will also be doing a lot of the running when we hoof the ball out of defence after another chelsea attack! SRL can come on later in the game and hold the ball up and create a different approach to our attack.

I think we have to keep the ball and outpass them..

JRod should score a humdinger from outsie the box by actually connecting with the ball.

Set piece masterpieces will see our center backs score two headed goals..

Rickie will miss a penalty..

Gaston will be confused with Ramirez and score a hat trick...

Cech will be his usual undisciplined self and Boruc will deliver a masterclass reminiscent of the 1974 Polish keeper...

Then I will wake up..

I just hope that if we lose we do not get hammered..

...goal difference will be a big factor come the last games...as it was with Whufco last season...

....similar points but a massive positive goal difference puts the pressure on the other teams..

Nigel Adkins doesn't know the meaning of Negative! The team is led by a guy with the guts to pick his own team and not listen to the some of the crap bs posted around fan sites and threads like these. For large parts of the first half we did fantastically well passing the ball around the mid and winning ball at the back.. Punch and Jay looked a bit nervy up front but showed good pace and positional play.. they are learning...

IMO and in defence of Nigel: Rickie has been pedestrian in the last couple of games though some good touches.. has been off form.. Gaston hasn;t earned his place in the starting line up.

100% correct..the 2nd half team had to work from2 nil down and did it because they went for it..different team.

I will give massive credit to NA because Rickie does tire quick and ain't our quickest..

for all the observations about costly substitutions bringing on those impact subs when Chelsea had lost their puff was perhaps inspired...

Possibly, but there is simply no way of telling. Lambo against more tired legs may give you a completely different effect from on from the start. I'll need to check in the multiverse to get the result of that one.

So, over the most recent ten games the teams who have gained more points than us are, Man U, Tottenham, Man C, Arsenal, Evertone, Chelsea. That's it. If the league were over the past ten games, we'd be SEVENTH!

Eat humble pie all you doubters and skate wind up merchants.
The management team at Saints laid out their stall, had a game plane and stuck to it, how many of you out there expected young Shaw to come off late in the second half for Fox to come on?
The team is growing in stature and confidence with every game, impact players coming off the bench and making a massive impact, what a fantastic point, what a fantastic performance, what a fantastic TEAM!

Fair enough, I thought we were gonna get stuffed the way we finished the first half - deja vu with the cup match and all that. More than happy to see the turnaround. I thought the game plan was good to start with - if anything NA was let down by certain players who didn't put in the performances in the first half. But if I am negative for saying that we should play SLR as our first choice striker and play him where it hurts the other side's centre-halves, then I will stick with that opinion as I have all season. I will also stand by my other big opinion that we are too good to aim as low as 17th. We have shown what we can do as we continue to improve as a team and I think we can catch Wet Spam and Norwich. Maybe we won't finish in the top half but I reckon we can aim for top of the bottom. How's that for optimism!! COYR!

This is a great result, not many come back from 2-0 down to get anything against Chelsea. We give 2 goal leads away and pull 2 goal leads back, Never a dull moment with Saints. Certainly not for anyone with a dicky heart lol.
There is a spirit and passion in this team and they wear the badge with pride. A few weeks ago we were bottom and in danger of being cast adrift. Now we control our destiny. It is down to what we do that will decide our fate. We know about pressure look at our run in during the second half of the season from div 1 when we got promoted. Look at the pressure last season and we responded. We can do this. One defeat in six away games at some point lawrenson may shut up about us not being able to get points away from home.

I'd hate anyone to do this, because it'd be awful, but if anyone cut and pasted the following whenever he posted under either alter ego, he'd look a right_tit.

So don't do it, please. The text not to paste is:

---------------

Saintly..ah..sole signed off during the Chelsea match just before Bring back Branfoot came online. Odd coincidence. He calls Velleity "Valerie" in both signons and finally both saintly..ah..sole and BBB don't say, "rose tinted spectacles". They both say "rosé tinted spectacles". Saintly..ah..soul and Bring back Branfoot are the same person with two signons, without any shadow of a doubt. What a tragic life.

----------

So, please don't cut and paste that as a reply to their next hundred posts, please. That would be bullying a tedious little turdlet with so little in his life he has to have two identities. And that would be bad. Oh yes. So don't do it.

...... Saintlysoul, Ross123, BbB, Thomasupton, RingSaint, BakeyBoy, UpSaints, Bevois, Loosehead, Skin2000 ...... your negativity took one hell of a beating ..... ONE HELL OF A BEATING!!!
COYR!
In general, my post was somewhat tongue in cheek. No offence intended to genuin fans. I doubt many of us would have left SRL on the bench this evening; I certainly would have started with him.

However, he's getting on a wee bit and we're expecting a lot of him. If he chugs on for an extra season because he's being used a little sparingly right now, Nigel's use of him will have been genius.

Remember his first season with us? He was totally overplayed by Pards; every league match, every cup match. Result, burnout. It took a few matches into his second season before he recovered. He's two years older now, I don't think we can expect him to run the line for 38 Premier League matches. On reflection, regardless of the final score this evening, I think Nigel got it spot on - AGAIN!

I wasnt negative stras as a matter of fact it played out like I said it would. Rick on at the start, he would have burnt out by half time and we would have ended up losing 3-2
Yes, apologies, I scanned through quickly and picked up on your h/t angst which read something like: Rickie and Gaston on or Nigel off!

You cant be for real, if you understod anything about fotball you would know that when a newly promoted club holds the European champions to a draw after being 2 goals down i their own back yard that is a vry good result, had we have lost by one or two goals that would have still been a good result, but we did'nt

Saints seem to have lost their fear of the PL and particularly giving far too much respect to opposition sides earlier in the season. Long may it last. It seems to me that NA has done very well in transforming an essentially Div 1/Championship squad into an outfit that can compete in the PL. It has been a big learning curve for the club bearing in mind very few if any of the staff or players had PL experience. The pace and energy we have in the two full backs is making a big difference but all the players seem to be stepping up to the plate and unlike some posters I do not have a big problem with Guly! Well done NA and NC for the campaign so far so good!
Key game coming up (another one!).I get to about 6-8 away games a season – the Saints away support is awesome – marvellous to see – seems that way again tonight – total respect!

great result tonight NA got it spot on. just cant wait for the conspiracy theories about his comments to solent post match when asked if Forren had signed, he replied i dont know your asking the wrong person! shall i start it for all of you ? ok here we go, this can only mean that NA isnt talking to NC and has no say in who we sign, this must mean that NA will be out of the door before too long, infact if he gets 1 loss in a row he will be gone!

either that or could be that NA spent the day sorting out the team and tactics for tonights game and then managing the team during the game.

not sure if punch will stay though think he`s got his heart set on a move back to london, hope not and hope he`s around for a couple more years, and i never thought i would say that.

It was my pleasure. It reminded me an awful lot of the City game in terms of the way we brought Rickie on for impact but the difference was that we're a team with a whole lot more belief nowadays, which is why we're going home with something.

Plus, Chelsea were far better in their finishing than City were, so this was massive.

Together as one and all that jazz.

I can't get near £50m. Two 'expensives' with Gaston and Jay = £19m, then it's all low sums or free.
I think he means current valuations. Cork, Spider Clyne, 5 mill apiece. Young Luke nearer 10 mill and climbing every game. Yoshida, Punch and Davis should get the total to 50m. And then there is SRL!

I heard a report on Radio Solent this morning that Portsmouth Council are closing public toilets in the city to save money.
Will they include Fratton Park in this programme?.
No because Fratton Park has been classified as a cesspool and as such it has no redeeming value, much less a crapper.

Yeah I totally get it ????
If at the end of the season 2 points makes the difference I| will question games like this Im sorry but we should be setting our sights on winning, we were lucky to get the 2nd goal IMO.
There was nothing lucky about our second goal; it was great football.

I also watched it on tv here. It reminded me of the mancity match, very similar strategy. Better result this time though.

I said on an earlier thread about the players who got us here and the levels they have achieved.
Spider has been immense and honour of captain has been well earned .
By the way there 5 teams worse than us in this division.
Everyone plays before us this weekend and we will know Monday what we need to do.
I already know what we need to do. Beat Everton and take three more points. Doesn't matter what anyone else does.

Sorry mate I have to disagree.
do Prado is capable of flashes of excellence. but they are too few and far between.

Last night during the game I was watching a team work the ball well up the pitch only to have to bring it back again because they ran out of options.

Players like Do Prado should be constantly moving off the ball to give the attack some options and he just wasn't doing it. J Rod was just as guilty, but he's learning.
I'm not as rabid about him as others on here but I do think Do Prado needs to move on because he's just not bringing a consistent enough game at Premiership level.

I am sure Guly was playing to NAs orders, which restricts him a bit, a couple of other players didn't and that cost us. Everyone did in the 2nd half, just my view on it.
