Nicola Cortese has made Southampton 'a laughing stock', says Matt Le Tissier
12:51pm Friday 18th January 2013 in Sport
Matt Le Tissier
Matt Le Tissier says Nicola Cortese has turned Saints into “a laughing stock.”
The Saints legend was left disappointed by the executive chairman’s decision to sack manager Nigel Adkins and replace him with Mauricio Pochettino.
“Sadly it doesn’t surprise me,” he said.
“It’s come at a very strange time of the season considering we have only lost two of our last 12 games and have come back from 2-0 down against Chelsea during the week.
“It seems a little bit odd to me but the way that club’s been run by the chairman over the last couple of years nothing surprises you anymore sadly.
“Once again I think he has made Southampton a bit of a laughing stock.”
- Cortese's made Saints 'a laughing stick' says Le Tiss
- Benali stunned by decision to sack Adkins
- Saints fans plan to protest at Everton match
- Top managers sympathise with Adkins
- Mauricio Pochettino profile
- What do you think about Nigel Adkins' sacking?
- Saints players react to sacking
- Backroom staff leave with Adkins
- Cortese's ruthless gamble
- Adkins favourite for Blackpool job
- Speculation about Adkins resurfaces
Le Tissier admitted to not knowing much about Pochettino but instead was sympathetic towards the treatment of Adkins.
“Very little to be honest with you. It’s not something I’ve been thinking about to be honest,” he said of the new manager.
“I’m still a little bit shocked at the timing of the sacking of Nigel.
“It’s very very strange and it’s an odd thing to have to come to terms with today.”
He added: “It is a little bit sudden but he was under a bit of pressure early in the season and we thought it might happen then.
“Whether he couldn’t get the man that he wanted then we don’t know but it’s slightly odd the timing of it all. It’s very very strange.”

Serious question for you, what was your initial reaction on here when Pardew was sacked? Let's assume the various stories of why he was sacked are false.

Teams perform better at home because fans influence player's perfomances. Do your complaining at the end of the game, if you must.

Today is another story - this morning when i went to work we had a brilliant manager who was taking us places. He was learning all the time and has taken us from League One to where we are now in super quick time. When he was waiting to announce the new manager after sacking Pardew - Cortese said something along the lines that he would appoint a manager that would prove he (Cortese) knew what he was doing. Will he be making a statement to apologise for his huge mistake?
I love Southampton and hope we stay up but if we do we owe it to NA and HIS team nobody else. If we go down Cortese had better stand down or we - as fans - should demand HE is sacked. And in the meantime i suggest he keeps his smug face hidden unless he can give a bl**dy good reason for sacking NA.

...DILUSIONAL OWNERS. I,ve been a Southampton fan for 46 years; i cannot think of a time i have felt so ashamed by the actions of this club. A fellow fan posted today; 'if this is what our club has become then i wish it had died when it was in administration'. How in Gods name can you treat a man like this...i cannot believe Marcus would have allowed this to happen. It is clear that with the speed of the replacement, Cortese has gone behind Nigels back, knifed him when his back was turned. If the owners of this club decide to walk away....THERE WILL BE OTHERS, who will buy this great club, right now i hope they do walk away and take this joker with them; then maybe we will get an owner who understands...''that the most important person at a club is THE MANAGER and not the chairman.'' .......Alex Fergusons words not mine.

My issue is more with who NC replaced Adkins with - His managerial record is not exactly glowing is it 33.6% win rate with Espanyol to me suggests this new guy is not up to much. Had we got Di Matteo for example I could be calmer. I am saddened that most people seem to think NC is a GOD and it is mainly him that got us where we are today rather than recognising how much the Liebherrs, NA and the players contributed as well. NC was the agent that introduced the Liebherrs to SFC but to credit him with our success is a bit harsh on Adkins in my opinion. Others will disagree with me which is fine but where I agree on reflection is that being all angsty on Monday will backfire and won't reverse the madness of this decision. It is also disingenous to suggest that should NC leave we would die as a club as someone would replace him. You never know could even be someone better. So to conclude please DO NOT try and convince me I am not wrong to have lost a large amount of respect today for NC.

Cortese may or may not have loaded the relegation gun but the fans have the power to fire it.
There is no other explanation for why a team that scores freely otherwise is so nervous at home.
We have to accept that. However, it is a difficult one because I don't believe that you can just throw away your ethics for the sake of a win. If you do that you throw away your soul.
I don't even know the guy coming in and any criticism is not aimed at him in the slightest, but he surely has to know what he's coming into.
Yes, neither him or the team deserve to suffer, but it is a simple fact that it is going to happen. We've been there 1000 times before and we've seen it a 1000 other times at Blackburn and Chelsea and everywhere else, there will be an outcry, and rightly so, somebody is trying to destroy what our club stands for. If we don't protest, he already has.

It is Lieberherr's money that he left that is keeping our club alive, not Cortse cos he is only holding the fort for the Liebeherr's family and spending Markus's money for buying players, look after our stadium and training ground, etc with the agreement of Liebeherr's family who would release the money to Cortese.

Yes its sad and I'm gutted for Adkins but the players will need support, its Saints you support and like or not Cortese is the man that has got us where we are, he chooses what to do with the money, he employees the staff. Let him get on with it and sing Saints to a victory on Monday not send out negative vibes and cause Saints to miss out on three points.

Secondly anyone who boos protests or anything else isnt a Saints fan. Ive even heard some plebs saying they want us to lose to show Nicola up.
I think we have a brillant new manager who can take us up to the next level, think about some of the dopey decisions Adkins has made this season that have cost us points. We were killing Man utd for example until he made those stupid substitutions.

I wish Mauricio the best. I do wish NC would come down with some form if terminal illness. He is a disgrace to the club. We deserve better than him. NA definitely deserved better than NC.
Burn in hell NC.
Echo ban this for goodness sake!

He and the team need our support. At the end of the season we will see, but right now we need to be positive. And to those fans who have said they wont ever step back into St May's or they wont renew their season tickets, think yourself lucky you are in a position to go every Saturday.

You are over-reacting, if Cortese is driven out, the money will go with him and where will we be then? I am as upset as anyone, but have to be realistic. Support the team through thick and thin if you are a true Saints supporter, it is going to be tougher than ever, the timing is appalling, it is going to take everything we have got.

You are a laughing stock anyway - everyone who knows whats what in football knows that - however le-tis is right - it is an embarresment and slur on the history of saints (lol) to sack what would appear to be a compedent manager in favour of some ole manager with no prem experience.
Good luck!!

As an afterthought some of the Saints fans on the News website are great, but some of them are pathetic. I know Pompey have some who do the same here, so, on behalf of all the true decent Pompey fans, I apologise for any of our idiots on this site. Let's get the fun banter going again without the bile and nastiness. PUP
