Southampton players react to Nigel Adkins' sacking by Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese

Daily Echo: Richard Chaplow Richard Chaplow

Players at Saints have started responding to the club’s decision to sack Nigel Adkins and appoint Mauricio Pochettino.

Left-back Luke Shaw, who broke into the first-team under Adkins, wrote on Twitter: “very confused lol”.

Midfielder Richard Chaplow, who was Adkins’ first signing, added: “Obviously NA [Nigel Adkins] brought me to the club have a lot to thank him for would like to wish him all the best for the future”

He later added: "Now Looking forward to working under Mauricio pochettino and adding to our points tally for the season."

Meanwhile, the furore has made Southampton FC the most talked about topic on the social networking site.

At one point, of the ten most popular topics on the site, seven of them relate to Saints' decision to replace Adkins with Pochettino.

Totally nonsensical at this stage of the season. I feel the players really responded to Nigel. The man is a legend in my eyes and this treatment is disgusting. Support the team and the new manager but Cortese is a joke.

Feeling let down by club management
I thought Adkins was a great fit for Saints playing some of the best football I have seen since the Eighties.
Thanks for the memories Nigel.
Hoping this doesn't derail our survival.

I want to back the new manager.... but I am finding it hard to do.
The players must be as gutted as us.
Does this mean Luke could go?
Lallana? Lambert?

No man is as big as a club, so just WHY NC? WHY? a guy who has not done anything in the game, I would have preferred DiMatteo over this guy.

Sad and confused here in Norway

Great understatement by Luke Shaw. They have worked with a manager, who with the players, achieved back to back promos - and how many managers have done that? - and then started to come good in the Premiership - and who was responsible for not stiffening our defence in the summer.

I should think they in a state of physical and emotional shock and will do well to get their act together on Monday.

Unlike Cortese, a vast number of supporters have a deep knowledge and experience of both football and of management. Cortese has just about broken every rule in the book - were it not Saints who would be affected I wish he would live to rue his day of colossal misjudgement.

Spot on. Appointment probably made on the strength of a common language (but not football) or because Nigel kept taking Nicola's parking space?

When asked Wednesday about new signings, NA said "You're speaking to the wrong man".
The clue may have been in that comment.
With the new guy having an international pedigree, can we now expect quicker and higher quality transfers?

Good luck and thankyou, Nigel.

What a slap in the face for Nigel Adkins who has worked so hard with Saints and made us so Proud of our team.
It was no easy job when he took on the job back in Division One. He did better than many Managers could have done.
BIG BIG MISTAKE!! to get rid of him.
Good Luck Nigel in your next club. They will be lucky to get you.

Haven't commented for ages as felt all was going as expected and happy with how we were adjusting. Not sure how to feel now tho. Cortese is normally prooved right so will give him benefit of doubt...............
..However, if we are not top 10 at end of season wont renew my season ticket as feel its too expensive and fed up with games being moved to stupid times. May as well save my money and watch on Sky. I expect MUCH higher than first season survival now or else why replace Nigel?

Cortese has stated we need a higher profile manager. So Ponchettino is going to be judged very quickly not only on his results but who he (and Cortese) bring in during what remains of the transfer window.

Sorry Saints fans but this is great news for the teams under you, i was at Villa Park last Saturday when you played well (bit of a dubious penalty though !). My point is, at this time in the season you need stability, it looks like your owner is having delusions of grandeur.
Your one mission this season is to stay in the premiership, that means finishing above 18th, clubs around you in the league including my beloved Villa are hoping this goes wrong, lets hope for your sakes it does'nt. Good luck for the rest of the season.

I'm Brighton supporter - always thought Adkins was an arrogant sod but he was a very good manager, the best you've had in a long while.
I think it's a disgrace the way he's been treated and both the chairman and new manager have been underhanded in the way they've gone about it. From a bad start NA was pulling you back up,I hope you stay up this year, and this combo of clowns haven't done real damage. Mind you I wonder how long this one will stay if he's already lost the team - I know they're pros but I bet they're feeling as gutted as the fans right now.
Good luck for the rest of the season

What a gutless individual you are Cortese.
You do not give a toss about any of the former players or managers of this club and I now feel you are treating the fans with contempt.
Just remember Rupert Lowe did that and I have a feeling history may just repeat itself your tenuor may not be that long.

what would peoples reaction to this be had we been hammered against chelsea, somewhat different i think taking in the team selection.Nigel said we got a result because we stuck to the gameplan,so that was to go 2 down and have to bring our best players on to change things, think we got a result despite nigel.Good luck to nigel still done a solid job for saints

I am just as GUTTED as the rest of the posters on here, but I think we should all calm down a bit and let things sink in for a few days.

This has been a HUGE move and I am sure the reactions, both at St Mary's were anticipated by all that were in on it.

No doubt NA will be well compensated, and moves on with his fabulous reputation intact. He will no doubt be well-received elsewhere, and wished well by all of us.

I stay behind my team, as I have since my first game in 1957

NA had to go, the timing is all whack though, He should have gone after WBA away. Now the new guy who has achieved absolutely nothing in football has a total baptism of fire, and likely will get a point out of the next 9. Needs a major signing in the next 48 hours to get the fans onside. RDM was the obviou choice god only knows what back room dodgy deal has been done to get the Argie in.

I really liked Nigel and thought he'd do a great job for us and could be an England Manager one day. I hope he's next at Chelsea and he beats Man U to the title! He's certainly bring Blackpool up... Good Luck Nigel.

As for the crap being posted about Nicola Cortese - it means nothing.
Trouble with slagging is it bites you in the backside when you are wrong. We saw lots slagging when Pards got the chop. Saints have come a long way since then. 80% objected to the sacking and lots had a go at Nicola Cortese then. http://www.dailyecho

a few later 60% supported Nigel and he grew and grew on us.. 3 weeks into the prem the usual suspects were slagging they had just been shut up by a recent good run but you can bet the wheels were in motion before that (and Nigel seemed to know it)

Just 10 or so weeks ago lots wants Nigel gone though the poll said about 80% wanted him to stay but most posted they wanted him to stay because no one had an alternative.

Like it or lump it The Great Bus Ride has ended and it's Time to catch the Liebherr Express for Higher Honours and Europe..

Sing a song for Nigel but No White Flags!!

The Train leaves at 8 on Monday.

Lallana? Lambert?

No man is as big as a club, so just WHY NC? WHY? a guy who has not done anything in the game, I would have preferred DiMatteo over this guy.

Sad and confused here in Norway
Says what a lot of us are thinking, someone said that Nigel was a nice bloke, we all know that, but is that what it takes in the Premier, nice doesn't seem to be the way to go anymore. As you say no man is bigger than the Club and that includes Nicola, he is a man on a mission, but has that clouded his judgement? Only time and results will tell. As always the fans are the last to know what goes on within the walls of the Club, conspiracy theorists will have a field day, but 99% will be wrong as we simply don't know. As a supporter I have always asked for detailed information from the Club because I think we are entitled to be told, being the ones supplying so much of the cash needed for the Club to survive, no doubt early doors this guy will tell us less than Nigel, but only because of the language problem. It won't take much to tell us more!

NC and the Liebherrs have poured millions into a bankrupt club. That allowed the purchase of players from above the team's lowly status, attracted by the money on offer and the investment in facilities. For 2 seasons NC and the Liebherrs purchased a team that were a league better than the league they were in and it was less than a surprise when they were promoted. Now they are in the PL they cannot do that because half the teams are richer and more supported than Saints. So success can only be achieved by great management and temporary over investment. NC has still poured money into the club as a temporary investment but the results have been devastatingly bad because Adkins was unable to manage the team properly. The results speak for themselves: they are 3 points off relegation, their recent mediocre run of form is largely due to playing the lower teams. Their defence is a joke, nearly the worst there is. Everyone is nearly always out of position and they have let in 40 goals. Adkins has had a fortune to spend and that's what he has achieved. It must always be remembered that Cortese has to run the club successfully in the PL or he is out as well, and fans must remember that if he fails the Liebherrs will probably sell. If we want a club in Europe and the top six in the Premier League then we support NC. Next you can go to St Marys and watch Everton, Manchester Utd and City: without NC and the Liebherrs it would be Brentford, Bury and Crawley.

I KNOW WHAT I'D RATHER DO; I AM FOR ONE, SUPPORTING NC AND POCHETTINO

Southampton F.C. is changing fast, whether we like it or not, it seems. I'm sure NC will deliver the club that fans like magnette are after, but I don't know whether it'll be the same club that we all grew up supporting. There's more to following a club than what league you play in...
