New Saints boss will find it tough

Mauricio Pochettino meets the press Mauricio Pochettino meets the press

Saints have appointed Mauricio Pochettino to replace Nigel Adkins “for the club to progress and achieve our long-term targets,” according to Nicola Cortese.

We aren’t sure what those targets are, but presumably for Adkins to be replaced they must lie somewhere above back-to-back promotions and then keeping Saints in the Premier League.

If what Adkins was producing wasn’t going to meet Cortese’s long term targets, then logic dictates that at the very least they must involve establishing a top half team that can occasionally challenge for a European place.

Therefore, poor old Pochettino’s success or otherwise will have to be measured by that lofty gauge – and this for a guy who hits the ground running with zero experience of English football, speaking only pigeon English and with the club still looking over their shoulder in the table.

Merely keeping Saints in the Premier League doesn’t feel like enough anymore, given these standards.

Phew - what a day yesterday! I will miss Nigel and I thank him sincerely for all he did for us. Anyone though who thinks protest will get us anywhere is deluded. If you would like Cortese out or fan 'ownership' take a long hard look down the road before you wave your hankies, rip up your tickets or boycott St Marys. 100% behind the lads and our new manager on Monday please - no stamford toxicity!

Bang on the button St Graz.... Cortese is here to stay whether we like it or not. If he has made a monumental **** up then its he that will have to answer to the owners.... not the fans.

All we can do is get behind the team and the new manager to keep the momentum of recent results going.

Nigel has proven his worth over the past few seasons and will soon be back in work... thank you Nigel Adkins and good luck for the future.

Wonderful satirical tone. But when will the Echo realise that "buy the paper to read the rest of this..." is such an outdated publishing model that has never driven paper sales? Paywalls won't work anyhow, but punishing those for not living in the delivery area in a global age is just stupid, especially when smart ads can be served to an international audience. An easy test of this would be to put the rest of the article behind a paywall and see who is willing to pay. Up for the challenge, Echo?

Yet it is pointless to turn on MP, as all he has done is take a job that would of gone to someone else otherwise.

Its one thing for Chelsea fans to produce negativity at the Bridge, all they lose is points. We do it and we will be relegated.

NA's philosophy was everyone together, Okay he has gone but that still applies.

Perplexed as I am by this move by Cortese. I was equally perplexed when Pardew was sacked and Nigel who? came to the club as were many.
Yet NA was fantastic and what he achieved was enormous.

I do ask if you can't speak the language, how do you get your message across? How do you show your passion and give motivation?

Across various sites fans from all over the country are saying Saints have just relegated themselves. This just feels like a massive mistake.

Our team needs us more than ever, the new manager needs a chance, whatever we think. All I know is he is rated highly by the likes of Pep G and Jose M.

I think this was lined up when we had four points and the delay was the work permit.

I think the fact he mentioned that he had been studying the club in recent weeks shows that NC had made his decision to remove Nigel Adkins some time ago. I think where everything has been done so callously by Cortese is sure to make it a baptism of fire for MP. Winning his first ten games will still leave a bitter taste for the fans due to the way this has all been handled and the total disrespect shown to Nigel and his staff. I agree that protests are not going to help matters, but there's alot of anger and pent up frustration that has to be vented somehow. I, like so many fans, am recovering from what can only be described as a dramatic day. In the cold light of a new dawn following a night of reflection and allowing the emotions to cool one cannot argue that at times NA has been criticised for some of his tactics and losing 19 pts from winning positions does, I'm afraid, does speak for itself. Yesterday I quickly developed a very negative attitude toward NC, however although he is seen by large numbers of the fans / public as a tyrant / dictator it has to be said that it appears his actions are being taken for the best interests for the club. Being Italian the feeding of his ego will be driving NC on and if the club benefits that's alright by me. Meanwhile I thank NA for all that he has done and wish him, and his family, all the very best for the future.

Change is rarely embraced in any walk of life. Nigel isn't/wasn't the high profile manager to pull the players to get us to the top half of the table as NC has always wanted in his vision for the club. Therefore change was probably always coming.

Unfortunately, more change is on its way. I feel that fans favourites on the pitch will be the next to go as most of this squad wouldn't get into a top 10 prem side. There is no room for sentiment if we want success as this isn't the same club that was in the Prem some 7-8 years ago. To be constant relegation candiates is just not good enough and not why NC convinced the legendary Marcus to purchase the club.

Despite all of this I am still gutted for Adkins. But if I am being honest with myself it's not because I feel he could achieve more success for us but because of the person he was. Likeable, intelligent, 100% committed to the cause and because he got us promoted twice and he deserved a chance. Now he will live on as a legend to us. In the past, I was critical of his ability to have the pulling power to purchase players. Weren't we linked with Michu and Butner in the summer?

Good luck to Nige. We treated you badly and for that I am very sorry and wherever you go I will fondly follow your results and wish you well (unless its down the road). Now though I have to continue to support my team and there is no room for sentiment if we want to be successful.

I have supported the saints for well over 50 years and have seen some very strange decisions along the way. The decision to sack Nigel Adkins, is, unfortunately a sign of the times and I am sure there will be many more managers with other clubs, between now and the end of the season who will share the same fate.
I feel that we have to accept what has happened and continue supporting the team from Monday night. After all they must feel as confused and uncertain of what lies ahead as we do. They will need the belief and extra encouragement from the fans from now on .

Not sure if anyone else has said this on another thread, but does anyone think that this guy has been appointed because of his friendship with mourinho?

One aspect of this dramatic action I am having difficulty rationalising is the timing. If, as suggested, MP has been assessing the club's players for some little time, an act that clearly indicates MP was considering an offer of 1st team coach, then why wait until halfway through the transfer window? MP must have made decisions about players capabilites and potential and ideas of whom he would like to ship out and bring in. Cannot imagine this was not discussed during his meetings with NC. He now has just two weeks to acheive this instead of 4 had NA left at the end of December. Anyone any deas?

CORLEONE STATEMENT REVISED:

“This decision has been made with the lack of ambition of Southampton Football Club in mind. Whilst we acknowledge the contribution Nigel Who has made during the past two years, for the Club to regress and achieve our long-term targets of getting everyone to speak Spanish a change was needed.”

Executive Chairman, Nicola Cortese said: “Mauricio is a coach of dubious quality who has gained a reputation as an **** tactician and excellent man manager – probably because he has the face of a lady. I have played him at FIFA 13 on the Playstation, and I have a girl’s name, and know this. I have every confidence that he will perspire our talented squad of players to perform at the highest possible level.

“He also shares Nigel Atkins belief that the most successful clubs are built by nurturing young players through a development system that provides a clear path to the door, thereby creating a culture that keeps them at the Club for the long term until they are offered more money by 'Arry at Queens Park Rangers because let’s face it, who wants to live in Southampton? This is an approach he has employed with great success in the past, resulting in him being sacked from his last job at Espanyol, and I look forward to him bringing that experience and expertise to the Venkys at Blackburn in due course.”

Yes I think we, as the vocal support should show our chaiman that we are an integral part of Southampton football club.
That our financial input is a major factor in the existence of the club.
I think we have to demonstate our distaste in the manner that he has DISPOSED of the best manager the club has had in the last 20 years.
We should show this in the only way possible for us by chanting Nigels name.
Without the support there is no business.
Once demonsrated,we then have to tell the players, who must be shell shocked, that we are totally behind them and the new management team.
Without the money from Marcus Liebherr, there was no club.
Without Corsese seing the opportunity, there was no club.

Just so disapointed with the despicable way that it has been done.

I had hoped that the great name of Southampton football club would avoid any more adverse media,as we have had more than our fair share over the years.
Alas not to be!
Hope he has got it right cos after 50 years of supporting our club I have to say that my patience of bad management is on it's limit.

NC and the Liebherrs have poured millions into a bankrupt club. That allowed the purchase of players from above the team's lowly status, attracted by the money on offer and the investment in facilities. For 2 seasons NC and the Liebherrs purchased a team that were a league better than the league they were in and it was less than a surprise when they were promoted. Now they are in the PL they cannot do that because half the teams are richer and more supported than Saints. So success can only be achieved by great management and temporary over investment. NC has still poured money into the club as a temporary investment but the results have been devastatingly bad because Adkins was unable to manage the team properly. The results speak for themselves: they are 3 points off relegation, their recent mediocre run of form is largely due to playing the lower teams. Their defence is a joke, nearly the worst there is. Everyone is nearly always out of position and they have let in 40 goals. Adkins has had a fortune to spend and that's what he has achieved. It must always be remembered that Cortese has to run the club successfully in the PL or he is out as well, and fans must remember that if he fails the Liebherrs will probably sell. If we want a club in Europe and the top six in the Premier League then we support NC. Next you can go to St Marys and watch Everton, Manchester Utd and City: without NC and the Liebherrs it would be Brentford, Bury and Crawley.

I KNOW WHAT I'D RATHER DO; I AM FOR ONE, SUPPORTING NC AND POCHETTINO

As long as the new manager keeps the same flowing attacking football as we have been playing, we should play as we have been. We had it all, a brilliant owner, astute chairman, excellent English Manager with players and fans all heading in the same direction. Things were being done properly for once, negotiations kept secret until the deal was done, youngsters being brought into the first team, it's been a fantastic ride but I can't help but feel that the I am no longer supporting a club that does things properly and we have lost something very important. Not just the Manager but the ethos of the club.

I for one don't want to see a whole raft of Spanish players being drafted into the squad. I'm very happy our young, hungry English players such as Shaw, Clyne, Lallana, Puncheon etc ... that's where I was going on the bus but I fear that the direction has changed forever. Of course I will continue to support the Saints as I have for more years than I care to count but something of the magic of the club has been lost here. I just hope that this turns out to be the right decision, but I fear not.

Lets not lose the fact that NC brought us this success for the past two and a half years through having the savvy to replace AP with NA (much to the disgust of many fans at the time), lets hope he has yet again pulled a master stroke,thank-you and good luck NA

The Norwegian you have just signed, surely if that was adkins deal, then it would have been cancelled as Adkins was leaving...
Just shows that cortese should take the blame ....

Like most football fans before yesterday I hope you survive but now you have become a bit like qpr and most neutral fans would want you to go down...
Strange thoughts!

May I ask you both a polite question? How did you feel when Dave Merrington was sacked after 'successfully' keeping Sainst in the top flight in 1996 a few weeks after being named manager of the month?

What we don't need now is for supporters to forget that they are supporting THE SAINTS not any individual currently or formerly at the club.

Our chairman is a very single minded individual, that much we all already knew. The thing is, where does it stop? When does success and all that comes with it lose it's value because of the way you achieved it? Like most fans, I was gob-smacked at the decision and am gutted for NA. At the same time, it's not goinna help to get on the new guy's back - he just took a job that was offered. My concern is basically this, what price success? Do we have to sink to the depths that Pompey went to in pursuing glory or is anything and everything okay just so long as we get what we want?

Nigel was a brilliant manager and what NC has done is a travesty that may yet backfire on him. This said, the club is effectively his and without him we would not be here, so we all just have to grunt up and support whoever he chooses to manage our mighty team. His judgement has got us into the Premier League and he clearly has ambition for us, so I say let him get on with it. By all means show support for NA, but above all, ensure we are fully behind the team. Without that we will surely fail. Good luck on Monday boys!

I'm still pretty traumitsed by yesterday's events. I struggle to find the words to express my outrage at treatment handed out to Nigel. Considering we are in the middle of a relegation scrap, with a testing series of fixtures looming, the timing is ludicrous.

That said, I'll support the new man and his regime.Time will tell if this massive gamble has actually been an inspired decision. As a lifelong Saints fan for over 30 years, I truly hope that this is the case.

The whole business leaves a bad taste. The only way to rid that taste is by winning football matches.

Massive thanks and respect to Nigel. I hoped he'd be our gaffer for years to come, sadly that's now not to be. The man is a legend forever in my eyes.

Getting back to Adam's story; I think it's right to say Mauricio has it up against him. Hard KPIs at SFC - The Chairman will want us to stay up... If we drop back into the relegation zone and don't immediately start thrashing teams I'd expect yet another replacement. I wonder if NC is already talking to big name candidates trying to tempt them into the premiership. Trouble is we now have no base of stability and ambition backed by cash input but not matched by performance or sensible recruitment.

We probable all read Maurico's profile and wiki etc it appears he did okay initially at Espanyol but had no financial backing at all and failed so was ousted... surely his record there was not the inspiration for him being a long term manager at Saints.. tell me I'm wrong - and why please..Perhaps those above Mauricio in the pecking order of Euro star club directorship have advice Nicola that Maurico is an unrealised up and coming talent that can do the job required? Geesh I hope so for Saints Sake.. COYR

PS If you want to protest for goodness sake get our stripes back :)

Morning Dan. Yes - let's get our stripes back! This nearly-all-red look just isn't saintly.
One thought that cheered me up a tad when I was looking at MP's first training pix, is that in Mau we now have the BEST LOOKING MANAGER in the PL! Maybe he is a 'smiling assassin', but that's a heart-melting smile he's got! Not at all important, I know, but a girl's got to get her pleasure where she can in these cruel times

WILL THE ENDS JUSTIFY THE MEANS

Disgraceful action, timing and deceitfulness by Cortese. The club belongs to the supporters - not some power-mad entrepreneur.
Saints fans will be there long after he has gone.

It has all left a bitter taste in the mouth of decent fans.

However, once it has dawned on him that perhaps he could have dealt with the mangerial side a whole lot better, and if he is big enough at some stage to admit he handled it badly, then perhaps people will understand that the new appointment was actually the right one - albeit done in the wrong way.

Fans have rightly made their outraged feelings felt. now is the time to move on and support the new manager.
