Lawrie McMenemy admits he was knocked back by Nicola Cortese's decision to replace Nigel Adkins with Mauricio Pochettino

Nicola Cortese Nicola Cortese

SPEAKING as a manager with more than a little experience – in fact well over 1,000 games at every level from fourth division to internationals – I never get too surprised. But I have to admit that the dismissal of Nigel Adkins and the way it was conducted knocked me back.

Sir Alex, and you’ll get nobody more respected in the world of football, called it “crazy.”

Other leading figures have used words like shameful and unforgiveable.

The bookmakers as ever were ahead of the game and realised something was off when, according to one I saw on TV, bets for as much as £500 were being laid at odds of 25- 1, not only for Nigel losing his job but giving the name of the person to take over.

At his first press conference the new manager tried to evade the question about when he was first approached for the job but did admit he had been researching the team over the past weeks.

It will be helpful to him, and believe me he will need as much as he can get, but it really does look bad as those comments seem to suggest that Nigel Adkins was what I can only describe as a dead man walking.

You have to think he could even have won at Chelsea and would still have been sacked.

I thought I had heard it all when Alan Pardew was sacked three days after winning 4-0 in an away game, but this one beats it all!

I have to accept, like many of the oldies, that the game has changed dramatically.

I have talked on many occasions in this column about the influx of people from other countries, and particularly business types who obviously have no background previously in football.

They don’t try to hide this and make it quite clear they see Premier League clubs as great business opportunities and we seem to be experiencing this with our club at St Mary’s.

I say OUR club but I don’t suppose it is anymore.

I of course can compare the way the boardrooms used to be.

While there were 92 professional clubs there were very few that could match the quality and type of director that ran Southampton Football Club.

It was a collection of experienced businessmen who were working and giving other people jobs in the community, men such as George Reeder, the chairman, who had refereed a World Cup final so had more than a little football experience as well.

They looked on their roles as representing the man on the terrace.

No one can say that is the case here now.

It’s not often that the manager’s name is sung out loud and clear every game, win, lose or draw.

But that shows Nigel Adkins had won over St Mary’s, particularly the area which a previous chairman with great ambitions had called the lunatic fringe, but I call the loyal fringe.

You can’t kid them. They work their socks off to make enough money to support the team through thick and thin, home and away, and when they sing your name they know what they’re doing.

They will be as shocked as anyone.

All right football is a very fragile occupation and a few wins in a row can sometimes make people forget what has gone before, but I think the new man, Mr Pochettino, has got quite a task in a short time.

There are 16 games left and in that time he has to introduce whatever methods he has with the help of a completely new staff and presumably with the use of an interpreter judging by his press conference.

He did say he will be learning English as quick as he can but even Fabio Capello found it difficult when relations with his England players came into focus.

In addition, he has to prove an ability that was not too evident in his last job where his team were bottom of the league when he was sacked.

It would appear from what he has said himself that once he was sacked he had the impression there would be a job going at St Mary’s, otherwise why else would he admit he has been researching the team for the past weeks?

Also in that short time whilst he is taking English lessons there will be the relationships to be built up between first team players, particularly the experienced and hardened pros that owe Nigel Adkins so much.

Don’t forget he was the man that guided all of them into the top flight where virtually none of them had been before.

As in many manager and player relationships they may not have always have seen eye to eye.

There has not been a manager yet born who was popular with every player.

I developed a saying many years ago that you don’t have to be popular, especially when there are more players than the 11 you pick from, so that comes second to respect.

Just 16 games to learn English and gain respect in the club is hard.

It’s not like any other job where you are working 9-5 and have overtime as well if necessary.

With so many games in a short time the training sessions at this time of the season become fewer anyway.

No doubt there will be attempts to do bonding sessions, either at home or away, but, while that might look the answer on paper, I know from my own experience it often isn’t that easy.

While a player might appear to be happy to go away for a few days, even in the sunshine, it doesn’t always go down too well at home.

Most wives and families accept things like this happen, particularly pre-season, but the fact there is an emergency at the club doesn’t make the players’ life any easier with school runs and family time etc.

To get the best out of players they have to be relaxed and happy away from the club as well as in the club.

I do think – with my League Manager’s Association vice-president’s hat on – too many managers are losing their jobs much quicker now than the old days.

Admittedly the rewards are now higher and undoubtedly the contracts will be settled – not always easily but, with the help of the LMA backing, financially the manager sooner or later gets paid up.

The task then of course is to find another job and, whilst we can all say Nigel could walk into most jobs at Championship level if not Premier League, they don’t come up as often the higher up you go and it means yet another upheaval for the family.

After having a taste of the Premier League, the frustration of not being able to complete a full season will hurt.

On behalf of most of the supporters, particularly those of the loyal fringe, I will endeavour to pass on everybody’s best wishes and thanks for what he achieved whilst he was here.

I can only hope that the club holds its Premier League position because I think the chairman might now find another name will be called out during games – and unless every game is successful with three points it might not be a nice one.

For once I think the burden of expectancy of keeping the club at the highest level will not be on the shoulders of the manager but the man who appointed him.

NA had come as far as he could with the club (nearly the worst start to a premiership season of all time).

Sure he has done a lot for saints, but we need to be progressive and i think this is a progressive move.

This guy is highly respected in Spain and will bring a level of Premiership to the club.

Fans need to do some research, get behind him and stop being so negative.

My father always use to say to me , to win any aurgument you have to be there in person. You will win nothing by staying away. You can go and shout abuse at the Chairman if things dot go to plan. Might make you feel better, but i dont suppose the little runt will take any notice. Keep it up long enough and the family might take note. Just imagine what it would be like if he ever do gain ownership of the club. THAT WOULD BE THE TIME TOO TEAR UP YOUR TICKET.

Football is a business of opinions. Opinions by chairmen about managers and opinions by managers about players mean that ruthless decisions will occasionally be made. Lawrie should know, as he definitely made plenty of his own, ruthless decisions about players! All successful football managers do it! We should, of course, thank Nigel Adkins for a job well done, wish him well and move on. I'm sure he will be well compensated financially, no doubt much better than we fans might get if losing our jobs. He will easily get another job in the hot seat somewhere else, as he is a successful manager, whose record speaks for itself. I think his future will be a good one and that we haven't heard the last of him. Just look where Alan Pardew went after getting the sack! Good luck to Nigel. He has earned great respect and thanks from we Saints fans and his achievements will never be forgotten.

Sorry to see NA go but believe he had taken us as far as he could.

However, his PR skills are non existent

We must not become like Chelsea fans
and turn on the Club and then get relegated. This is NOT what NA would have wanted and those "fans" are
being very short sighted.
Now to the future. From what we read
MP is well respected and I have no doubt that NC canvassed a lot of opinionsbefore making this appointment. After all we know he is a shrewd business man and he has not
let us down in anyway.
Yes, this new appointment has been in the making for some time but I am certain MP has been watching us and
has a fair idea of our strengths and
weaknesses.My concern is that with
the snow he is unable to train outside
and put his ideas into practice.
So,all you doubters, I can understand

No problem if it were not for NC be assured we would not be anywhere close to where we are now and for that I will be forever grateful to NC for getting the late great and much missed Marcus to invest in our club. Having said that I will never ever respect NC
for his method in replacing NA as just an after thought to his new mans appointment without even a mention of the hard working loyal duo of MC and DW. Please Mr.C IF YOU HAVE AN OUNCE OF DECENCY IN YOU THANK NA AND HIS TEAM IN THE PROPER MANNER THEY DESERVE FOR WHAT THEY ACHIEVED AT SOUTHAMPTON.I will not be there on Monday but I will as always be listening to the match on Saints player in Madeira and hope I have the opportunity to join the home crowd to one last rendition of there is only one NA before we get down to the serious business of supporting our SAINTS:

you are spot on. it just goes to show how little is known about european football when Lawrie mac actually says the new guy had achieved nothing in football. He built a great team at Espanhol a club without financial resources promoting more than 20 into the first team and then was forced to sell the lot because of financial pressure,. He was rated to be the next Real madrid manager at one stage. This guy is the real MCKoy. Cortese would never do anything to hurt the club this has been done for the best. You cannot get top european players to coms to us unless their coaches are known and respected and Adkins sadly was an unkown quantity outside of these shores. You can bet that this was the main reason for his departure as well as doubtful decisions at times durig games. Saints mean to be a top four club and this unhappy event proves it.
he has not signed any top players.
he promoted from within his youth system, same as we do!
He has not worked with experienced international players for very long as he dropped and sold most of the team he played with.
I am still going to to Monday's game and I will be supporting my team, The Saints.
BUT I am not hppy with the sacking of Nigel, same as I wasn't happy with the sacking of Pardew!

Sleeping on this it seems to me that the timing was all about the fear of Nigel becoming a success. He clearly had given the nod to the new guy (can't even remember his namio without going back to look it up) because he has bee 'studying' the players for a matter of weeks - so it has been in the bag behind Nigel's back.

The fear was starting to grow with Cortese that he had a very good manager under him - but there is something non-football going on here!! The longer he left it the higher up the table Saints would be - Cortese didn't want that.

Cortese is about himself - his ego in achieving something - Southampton FC is just a product. he will think he's doing it for the club but he is doing it for himself.

I like one or two others on here are toiling with the decision to go on Monday. Being there makes me feel party to everything and the force behind the blade in his back. But I will always be a Saint - what a conundrum - I have a 40 mile each way trip to each match - kind hope the snow keeps falling and makes the decision for me!!

1, LM left Saints to go to Sunderland when the 'real' football people running us at the time wouldnt bow down to his demands.
2, LM quotes being in football from all divisions and international.... but what did he achieve?
3, NA got us promoted with what was essentially AP's team
4, Without NC there would be know team to support.
5, So far everything NC has done for our club has been with its best interests at heart.

I agree. Following a club is not about winning it's about feeling a connection with the team, with the players, the manager, the chairman... it is important to know that certain things are respected and sacking NA in this way shows that Cortese doesn't give 2 sh1ts about the fans and that he is recklessly gambling our future as a club.
The gamble may work, yes, but the reputation of out club will forever be damaged.

The two main issues I have with the dismissal of Adkins and the appointment of Pochettino are:-

1. Pochettino's lack of English. Anyone's who's worked overseas and knows anything about language interpretation will know what I'm talking about.

Out of interest, does anyone know of any non-English speaking manager (excluding Kenny Dalglish) who's been successful in England?

2. Player unrest. Adkins loyalists, who are probably the bulk of the senior professionals, feeling disgruntled by their gaffer's dismissal, may struggle to adapt to the new man. Pochettino will have to try to overcome this likely discontent quickly.

...and we all liked it, that 'as one' feeling against Coventry was something I have never experianced before and I have been going since 1971..

So Cortese has possibly done the right thing commercially and the worst thing morally....for big corporates who don't give a flying fück about their customers it is one thing.....

...however for a club to throw this feeling away is very dangerous and makes any future success feel 'tainted' as it was at the expense of something more important..

Please can all of those saying that they're not going to attend matches again (this season or ever) please do the honourable thing and NEVER go to see Saints ever again?

And that means NEVER; even during any future glory days (when we're riding high, on a cup run, in Europe etc.). Then there will be room for genuine fans who support their team rather than aiming their support or bile at individuals - past or present.

The club is bigger than any one person, that includes Lawrie Mac, NC, NA, Le Tiss, Ted Bates, Bobby Stokes, and every single fan; Yes, even Nick Illingworth. :)

TOGETHER AS ONE!!! RED ARRMY..!

Ooh, a little red army came over me all of a sudden..
The way this business has been conducted disgusts me and im more angry now than yesterday.
Even the more critical of NA like myself have been won over by him over the last ten or so games so knowing what was going on behind his back has done it for me.
I know fans will all have different opinions but to blindly follow the club whatever happens is not for me.
Get over it FFS NA is not coming back so move on and get behind the team!
Can I have your ticket then to sell on? Someone will want it if you don't.
My seat will remain empty this season in protest and i wont be back,i have only missed a couple of home games in ten years so am not some some glory hunter like a lot of the plastics who attend games now.
Football fans feel like they have to support their team out of misguided loyalty and put up with everything thrown at them.
I'm serious with this comment three halves.
If you are serious too about not wanting your season ticket then please let me know how much you want for the rest of the season. Thanks

Somewhat surprised at you slugger. You have been one of the voices of reason over Nigel's difficult days, and I thought you would be disgusted at cortese's treatment of a very good manager, and decent human being. I really wouldn't want you in my corner if things got tough. He has stabbed the man who got us into the premiership in the back, and if that is ok with you, I am disappointed.
I'll always support whoever is in charge (or at least give them a chance) , I was as gutted as anyone at yesterdays news , football is a tough business and have made my decision to move on .

25 years ago the company i worked for was taken over! and like NC was the new boss a nice man, no, did i like him ? no, But he was good for the company, and he was very good for me.Some were sacked along the way, no one would of p!ssed on him if he was on fire but he made it work, and he did not get much wrong. NC is a hard assed buisiness man and IMO although he is not going to win many popularity contests the club will go from strength to strength !

Nige has departed and Cortese could have handled it 100x better as it is a PR disaster.

BUT Nigels compensation package must have benn seen, signed and delivere as there is no media chatter about him that I can find out.

He is such a good bloke that he will recover and soon be back in business.

As for todays games looks like that facker Redknapp as bought another good player, and yonks ago I said we should have bought Adam le Fondre!!!

Whatever happens lets not turn St Marys into the pit of discontent that has happened at Chelsea!!

With todays results we cannot afford to become a fractured club.

GHK..you are emotional about it, as we all are...but lets not kid ourselves, we support our city represented by our team BUT football is a rotten business, at the very top Blatter is imo a fraudster of mega proportions..to a greater or lesser degree they are all at it..

Big clubs have bought football whats the g16 in Europe all about...the big clubs 'owning' football and all future fans and revenue that's what..

So Cortese has a decision to make..I hate the decision and feel that whatever we gain in the future will be for ever at the expense of an honorable man....

...from a perspective of the future and because football IS commercial Cortese
as a corporate thinker did what he thought was in the best interests of a corporate company....

Regrettably for all concerned Nigel, Fans and even Nicola himself something decent has been sacrificied in the process......

....unfortunately that is the path big business 'believes it has to walk for huge success, all corporates at heart are nasty beasts and I am a capitalist...

In conclusion big business does not have a soul because it THINKS it cannot afford one..

...and we all liked it, that 'as one' feeling against Coventry was something I have never experianced before and I have been going since 1971..

So Cortese has possibly done the right thing commercially and the worst thing morally....for big corporates who don't give a flying fück about their customers it is one thing.....

...however for a club to throw this feeling away is very dangerous and makes any future success feel 'tainted' as it was at the expense of something more important..
Excellent post. A club is not only about winning, it's also about "feeling".

He's not just making decisions but trying to run the team, is that good business?
I hope I'm wrong but this will all end in tears.

Thanks
It is about integrity not money so my seat will remain empty for the rest of the season.
Which seat is it?
My one in the Itchen south will remain empty but im sure you will get a ticket somewhere .
I already got one ta...I was just interested in which seat number will be remaining empty till the end of the season. You can be exact if you like....it's not as if you'll ever be sitting in it now will you! ;O)
Im not sure why you have a interest in empty seat numbers if you already have a ticket.

7:31pm Sat 19 Jan 13

Yesterday's events left me in a very depressed mood which was not lifted by the signing of a new centre back or positive comments about our new manager nor was it helped by the fact that I heard the news while travelling to attend the funeral of a dear friend.

It has however set me thinking about how we all feel about our club and a quite clear mismatch between the values of many of our fans and those of our chairman.

Over the last few months I believe we had slipped back into being the fans of the old Southampton FC. We all still saw our club as a friendly provincial club that was not going to set the world alight. We had one or two good players and we played attractive football. We could on our day turn over one of the top sides and on another get a drubbing from a struggling one. As the season developed it looked like we were going to just about survive in the Premier League but that it would probably go to the wire. We were satisfied with that and it is what we have come to accept.

The old days and the Saints of old were back and we had slipped into our familiar comfort zone.

What we had all forgotten was the ambition of our chairman. He sees Saints very differently to many of the fans who maybe just didn't believe him or thought it was just words or him daydreaming when he talked about where he saw Saints in the future.

But that is not so. Nicola has a vision and he is going to make sure we achieve it.

It has taken the shock of the dismissal of Nigel to shake us out of our apathy and to make us think that we are perhaps in the embryonic stages of something that is beyond our imagination.

In organisational culture theory it is often said that a shock or surprise event is needed to move an organisation from its former culture into a new and very different one. Well yesterday's news was just such a shock for many.

Today I have at last realised that Southampton FC has become a very different football club to the one I have supported for over forty years.

I have to ask myself whether I share Nicola's vision for the future or if I hanker for the Saints of old.

If I wish to remain a Saints fan it has to be the former for the latter is no longer in existence.

So it has to be thanks Nigel Adkins and good luck to you and welcome Mauricio Pochettino. ........... copied and pasted from 606 ........... sums it up for me !

What about the appointment of Alan Pardew?

If he had to sack him after little over a year - and our results in League One over 2009/10 weren't up to his expectations - Cortese clearly made a mistake with that appointment.
Another way of looking at it is this ........ Nicola made a mistake with Pardew (in your opinion) ...... He had the balls to correct the alledged mistake pretty smartish .
exactly my point slugger, he has always done what he thinks is right for the club. The most important thing we must remember is if he goes the money goes to
That attitude allowed jimmy saville to abuse kids all those years in the hospitals. Schwi can f11ck off and take his money with him, I for 1 want my club back.
A lot on here have very short memories, we had an egomaniac chairman before and look where that got us, are we really that desperate that we allow this little foreigner drag our good name and reputation into the gutter, alienate our previous hero's and generally treat every one he comes into contact with with such
contempt?
Loyalty is earnt, what kind of impression is this leaving on the youngsters coming thru the ranks? And some questioned the loyalty of chamberlain! F4ckin amazing
Have you paid up your bet yet ghk?...some proof would be good. Cheers.
Have mentioned earlier, receipt will be behind bar of pub of choice. Very hollow win I feel but bets a bet, i wasn't far out and my opinion of cortese and reason to doubt him i feel has been proved right.
Support the club bb and I respect that but don't forget what Lowe did, schwi is the same
Thanks. I will be having a beer in the Joshua Tree after the game on Monday.
Yes...a hollow win...but a bet's a bet.
Also...probably not the best idea to slate our ownership quite to the extent you do (unless you have a better backer waiting in the wings). It can be taken as trying to undermine what us Saints fans are actually best at...supporting Southampton Football Club!
Ostriches!
I repeat the history lesson, ferguson, moyles and wenger equals longevity in premiership.
Lowe and Cortese interfering dictators equals disaster. Here endeth the lesson. Back cortese and you will also bring the club back down to it's knees.
Sorry but Lowe and NC are nothing like each other. Lowe was after the money from the start with his reverse take over of the club. It strikes me that Cortese is actually putting some integrity back into the club. No free rides, no gravy train, not even for himself. We are not aware of all the affair surrounding Nigel and so shouldn't speculte too much. I do think that Nigel has gone at the right time rather than on the back of a string of defeats and this enhances his rep.
You obviuosly don't like NC but if you have enjoyed any of the football and achievements over the last three years, it's him you have to thank.

I would suggest his empty seat is actually located with all the other empty seats in the Fratton End!

Nigel A was a good manager, and it appears he is a good person. He should have been given the time to learn his trade in the Premiership. I think we would have finished in the top half of the table had he stayed. His approach to the game was methodical. The fans shouted "..there is only one Nigel Atkins" with sincerity, and not without reason. I think he will be England manager one day but he will need to show now he handles failure well,as well as success. Above all, what his sacking shows is that football clubs do not belong to the supporters, as we like to claim. We have little power to influence key decisions. For example, are we happy with the current predominatly red shirts? I suspect not in most cases. Were we consulted, no!. Adkins made some strange decisions like the untimely substitution of Lambert and Puncheon in two home games, which cost us a victory, but like everyone with genuine passion and skill for their job, he deserved to stay. The old expression what goes around comes around is true, and Mr Cortese will have his day too!

Very true... no doubt we (as fans) will outlast the lot of em.

Football has gone much beyond being the "funny old game". It has become dog eat dog....no sentiments....sh1t or bust.

I just hope that we don't go down the road of Blackburn/Chelsea where fans turn up to boo their team and manager.

It's about enjoyment...and I get enjoyment from supporting my Club. Always will do.

I like the red shirts, genuinely red as with all white for some reason looks good with flowing football...

As good as we have been red and whit and black teams always look 'clumsy' it is actually a recognised eye phenomenon...

We always sing come on you reds so may as well be red....or YELLOWS.

If there is a change of manager on the horizon at least get someone who is proven at the top level and not a foreigner no one has heard off.
---------

Interesting that at that point there was no statement that NA must not go, just concern about who would replace him. No deep principle, just a normal, straightforward comment. I only noticed it because I'd never seen the poster's name before.

I mention it just because we seem to be hearing from plenty of people who didn't give a toss about NA (even some who wanted him to go, even some who wanted him to go last season for being tactically naive) but who are now ready to bomb the management suite at St Mary's over NA's departure. No names, no pack drill but there's a lot of it about.

I stress, I hate the fact that Nigel's gone: he was a breath of fresh air in a dirty industry. I suspect he'll end up proving to be a great manager. I took a great deal of slating for supporting him through thick and thin. But he's gone. All that's consistent in this is the *team* and they will have my unconditional support on Monday (and for all games).

The hypocrisy and amateur dramatics on here from some posters is a bit overwhelming.

But we do not have a new boss. We are the customers! Cortese is the supplier and Mauricio P. (I will abbreviate for now) is his new delivery man. In other words I am not sure I like it when "the tail wags the dog". I hope Mauricio P. is good news, but so was Adkins. Our disagreemeent comes I think in the relative risks of changing someone, for someone else who may not be as good in a number of human respects. It may well be the case that you know all about the details of Mauricio's talents, in which case I apologise because I don't. But from the scant research I have done I certainly cannot see what drives your optimism for the appointment. At perhaps the lowest level of the debate, Mauricio represents yet another foreigner taking an Englisman's job, without proper credentials.

I thought the spirits of Christmas had visited NC and he had reformed, particularly, when he appointed Terry Paine, as Honorary President.
I should have known a leopard doesn't change its spots and he is a shyster through and through.
He has no respect for others, he didn't even have the guts to attend the press conference, heralding the new manager.
No doubt he has done a confidentiality deal with Nigel like he did with AP preventing Nigel from spilling the beans on what an out and out shyster NC is.
I hope Nigel takes him to the cleaners.
If they made a Godfather 4, NC could walk in to the part of Michael Corleone play himself and get an Oscar!
Men like LMcM, Fergie, LeTiss, who know the game inside out, know what they are talking about, as do 95% of Saints fans.
Saints may be successful under NC but at what price? --- he has blackened the name of a great club, dragging it through his own personal cesspit.
Respect and loyalty has been earned by the likes of LMcM, Fergie, LeTiss and Nigel Adkins, the latter an example to all, of honesty, modesty, experience
and skill -- a genuine good bloke and a successful manager -- a rare combination -- who Saints fans would have been proud to have at the helm for years to come.
I wish Nigel all the success in the world, I will follow his fortunes avidly as no doubt the supporters of SUFC have done since he left them.
I hope Cortese reaps what he sows.
I expect Terry Paine to resign his position as Honorary President in protest, if he doesn't he will be seen as supporting and condoning a shyster and Terry's own great reputation, certainly among the Saints supporters who cheered him on in his heyday at the Dell, will be eroded bit by bit until it no longer exists.

As far as I can make out it seems to be 99% acknowledged that Cortese has acted like a (see you next Tuesday). The real split seems to be amongst supporters who think he may be a hard-nosed (see you next Tuesday) or just a stupid (see you next Tuesday). Pretty much everyone else thinks he's just a stupid (see you next Tuesday) who did not really understand how far Nigel had taken things with the budget he had.

I'll go with stupid (see you next Tuesday) whilst reserving my right to change my mind.

Look around you, how many TOP English managers/coaches do you see? Hardly any! Why? Because those magnificent men who coached/managed in the past forgot to keep up with the times!!

Agree 100% with this. All the 'NC know's what he is doing' comments miss the point. He has no respect for the history of our club and, worst of all, no respect for the fans. What next - merge with Poopey and rellocate the stadium to Fareham? Would that be OK? Would all you "NC know's what he's doing' supporters still be saying the same thing then?
We all want success and maybe this new guy will bring it. But this is the wrong time and the wrong way to do it. NA has achieved miracles and deserves much better. The fans love him. It seems the players were behind him and the performances on the pitch were improving. This decision was wrong and the way it was done was worse. I fear this is the beginning of a downward spiral - relegation, fans revolt, Cortese getting pi**ed off and leaving, return to financial meltdown. A sad, sad, day in the history of SFC.
