Bookies make ex-Saints boss Nigel Adkins odds-on favourite for Blackpool job
1:15pm Saturday 19th January 2013 in Sport
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
Nigel Adkins
Blackpool could offer Nigel Adkins a swift return to management following his controversial sacking at Saints, with the Seasiders hoping they don’t miss out on him for a second time this season.
It is understood that the Championship side were keen on acquiring Adkins’ services following the departure of Ian Holloway for Crystal Palace in early November.
Blackpool were thought to be keeping tabs on the situation at Saints at that time, when Adkins’ job was under serious threat.
They are now looking for a new boss after former Pompey manager Michael Appleton left to take over at Blackburn.
Adkins was quickly installed as odds-on favourite to take over at the Seasiders, following his dismissal from Saints yesterday.
The job could certainly hold some appeal him, should he wish to make a swift return.
Although Blackpool went into this weekend 15th in the Championship, they possess some promising young players.

Nearly all football pundits and fans are saying that sacking Nigel is an own goal of immense proportions, and absolutely nobody has anything good to say about our chairman.
Backs to the wall again, nobody likes us.
Isn't this the accusation we made against Pompey? Their fans "allowed" their club to go crooked. Have we allowed our chairman to be a little monster?
I will support the Saints always, but sometimes I have to wonder what I will allow MY club to get away with.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, NC in who we put our trust and faith in before NA joined saw the writing on the wall and decided to act now. It was probably going to be done in November but was given the chance steady the ship. If he succeeded (out of the bottom 3) then it would be beneficial for him and the team. Like it or not NC is keeping his promise of getting us into the Prem and staying there. Southampton FC is now are in good shape to push on in NC’s and Markus the great’s vision. NA has his reputation fully intact and will have his pick of Job’s I’m sure. Ok all a bit sudden, or so we speculate, but we have to move on. Nigel will do very well out of this and will always be loved and respected by us Saints Fans for What he’s achieved and we will always be thankful to him. I hope the Saints faithful Sing a chorus load and clear for Nigel ‘only 1 Nigel Adkins’ so all the watching TV audience and media can see how much we respect him, but then show support for the team, the new manager and the club (too soon for NC at the moment I think). Nigel wouldn’t want to see all his work come tumbling down and for us to fall out of the Prem. The king is dead, long live the king. Good luck Nigel and COYR.

Boo brigade that called for adkins head after three prem games and media are loving this circus.
I think we've all known for ages we have a head coach system at Saints where the manager sorts the team play according to board policy with board appointed players. The Head Coach does have a say but gets what he gets.
I see the new guy as a short term caretaker. He just simply has no record at all. Give him a go but he's not got a show of making an honest impact in the time available.
I've been his biggest supporter on here Nicola Cortese but he obviously "demands" miracles of the water to wine genre and is a very impatient intolerant man but whether this move pans out, we will wait and see..
If it doesn't work it will be very hard to find a credible replacement.

Trouble is he's already admitted to getting two managerial appointments wrong by sacking them.

Good Luck Nigel.. Chelsea should grab you!! but if you do go to Blackfool good luck.

Whether you think Cortese was right or wrong he has undoubtable split the fans and that cannot be a good thing.
Trouble is he's already admitted to getting two managerial appointments wrong by sacking them.
When you sack your own appointments you are admitting you got it wrong - I've done it myself - you either appointed the wrong person or you failed to give them the support in and tools for the job required. Simples.

Pochettino is highly regarded for his work at previous club Espanyol - and that respect has largely remained intact despite his departure by mutual consent from the Barcelona-based club in November and their subsequent revival under new coach Javier Aguirre.
True, Espanyol endured a terrible start to the season and Pochettino appeared unable to turn his team around, but the majority of fans stayed behind him and there was a great sense of reluctance among the club's hierarchy when they eventually made the decision to part ways.
The consensus among supporters was that Pochettino had been placed in a no-win situation at a club saddled with enormous debts, where he was consistently forced to sell his best players and deal with seemingly endless boardroom strife.
For many fans, the final straw was the summer departure of homegrown Spain Under-21 striker Alvaro Vazquez to Getafe. When Espanyol then kicked off the new season with just one point from their opening six games, fans directed their anger firmly towards the board rather than Pochettino.
Fans preferred to respect Pochettino for the achievements earlier in his reign and during his time as a central defender for the club.
By the time he took up his first senior coaching role at Espanyol in January 2009, Pochettino was already a popular figure with supporters following two successful spells as a player for Los Pericos, amassing nearly 300 appearances and playing in Copa del Rey triumphs in 2000 and 2006.
In between times, he played in France with Paris Saint-Germain and Bordeaux in a career that saw him win 20 international caps for Argentina. Most famously, from an English perspective, he was the man who conceded a penalty as Michael Owen tumbled under his challenge at the 2002 World Cup.
Pochettino's introduction to management was no easy task as he took over a team deep in relegation trouble, but he further strengthened his standing with supporters by inspiring his new team to a late-season turnaround that resulted in a 10th-placed finish.
Over the next couple of years, he developed a reputation as a forward-thinking and thoroughly modern coach. His teams played fast-paced football with an emphasis on pressing and ball retention, developing possession from defence, and Pochettino's methods soon attracted interest from a number of clubs around Europe.
Eventually the club's dire financial situation caught up with him. Debts forced them to sell star player after star player, including Jose Callejon to Real Madrid, Victor Ruiz to Napoli and Daniel Osvaldo to Roma, increasingly requiring Pochettino to make do with loan signings and veterans on short-term deals.
One notable aspect of Pochettino's time at Espanyol was his ability to work with young players and integrate them into the first team.
More than 20 academy graduates were introduced into senior football under him and, considering Southampton's strong track record in developing youth talent, that's surely one of the qualities that attracted them to Pochettino.
Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Luke Shaw are just some of the names to come through the ranks at Southampton in recent years.
The biggest immediate challenge for the Argentine is adapting quickly to the demands of the Premier League - an environment he has never experienced but always admired - with a team that is far from safe.
As Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez noted on Friday: "He is a good manager but it is very difficult at the beginning - you need to know the structure, the managers, the players, the referees. In England you have to adapt; it is sometimes a question of time."
An interesting sub-plot for Southampton fans is the potential summer arrival of talented Espanyol midfielder Joan Verdu, a creative playmaker widely regarded as the Catalan club's best player.
Verdu, 29, is out of contract at the end of the season and has not agreed a new deal, with the club struggling to find funds to pay him as they seek to reduce their debts.
A host of clubs across Europe are known to be keen on securing his services for nothing in June. Considering his history with Pochettino, it's fairly safe to add Southampton to that list of suitors.

Southampton is surrounded only on three sides by 750,000 people and most of them go to Bournemouth, Reading, Pompey and of course Saints.
There is no way on Earth without cultivating grass roots support that NC will get 50,000 people in a stadium. It is simply not going to happen. The biggest conurbation in Hampshire is Southampton and if life long fans drift away then that the enf of your Euro dreams I fear.

Southampton fans may be shocked by the sudden appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, but in Spain few people are surprised to see the 40-year-old Argentine back in a high-profile job.

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.
For it isn't your Father or Mother or wife
Whose judgement upon you must pass.
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.
Some people may call you a straight shooting chum
And call you a wonderful guy,
but the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.
He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest
For he's with you clear to the end,
And you have passed your most dangerous test
If the man in the glass is your friend.
You may face the whole world down the pathway of life
And get pats on the back when you pass,
But your final reward will be heartache and strife
If you've cheated the man in the glass.
and
Follow your dream.
Take one step at a time and don't settle for less,
Just continue to climb.
Follow your dream.
If you stumble, don't stop and lose sight of your goal
Press to the top.
For only on top can we see the whole view,
Can we see what we've done and what we can do;
Can we then have the vision to seek something new,
Press on.
Follow your dream.
now to move on.
onwards and upwards

There are lots of complications here, the Football League if I am correct are going to change the rules on Club financial sufficiency are they not? Something about spending only what they can afford from income, sugar daddies will not be allowed to finance Clubs with generous payouts e.t.c. He is single minded, some would say tunnel visioned to realise his goals. I asked myself 4 questions
1. Is NA capable of the whole journey into the top echelons of football, the answer is no not yet at least.
2. Is there a right time to sack someone again the answer is no.
3 Is there a right way to sack someone the answer is no. I have no doubt that NA will get a handsome pay package and a managerial job very soon.
4. Would Na have left Saints for a job with a top club the answer is yes of course he would he left Scunthorpe for us didn't he.
Which if you have read Mr Southampton lawrie Mac thread I think he is being a bit hypocritical I like Lawrie mac (and said so when Rupert was so rude to his wife at an agm) but he did leave us for a bigger club (Sunderland)
I do believe that NC has taken a heluva gamble on Mo the new manager but it is NC 's club and whether you like him or not he is an ex banker and as we all know they never take a chance so time will tell, as for me I don't know NC only what I have read and he is not one of the media's favourite people, but the snippetts I have learned like serving tea to the queue in the cold for cup tickets and some of the charity work he has been credited for what else is there to know He will drive on untill he reaches his goal he will upset many more people but make no bones about he will achieve what he has set out to do and as I said on another thread I am like a bear with a sore head for a week when we lose so the new manager better get some wins under his belt or I will be thoroughly miserable for the unforeseeable future for .

There is no way on Earth without cultivating grass roots support that NC will get 50,000 people in a stadium. It is simply not going to happen. The biggest conurbation in Hampshire is Southampton and if life long fans drift away then that the enf of your Euro dreams I fear.

I find it strange that talk has gone from Adkins being a future England manager and hope he stays if Liverpool came in for him to he's not good enough for us.
We had a bit of consistany and he had rode the storm and as plenty have mentioned got 4 points out of 6 away from home, I expected sweet fa!
The way it was executed stinks too and lacks class, Adkins deserved to see the season out.
Maybe he's better out of it and can now go back to manage a team on his own terms. Cortese is definitely playing a dangerous game and it is clear that he doesn't give a sh1t about the fans feelings by sacking a guy we cheer.
Now the deed is done...the dilemma is this...do we support the new regime...or do we potentially undermine the club we love?
My choice is to "suck on it", support the team 100% and see how it pans out to the end of the season.
I'll give Cortese's gamble till then.
Everton is a massive game, lose that and then the two Manc games and we could be going to Wigan for a must win game that could result in a new manager if we don't.

Paul Merson was very critical of Nicola on Soccer Saturday today and said "I hope they go down."
Well I don't. We have to shake this off, get positive again and back the team. Where's Red Army1?
Southampton is surrounded only on three sides by 750,000 people and most of them go to Bournemouth, Reading, Pompey and of course Saints.
There is no way on Earth without cultivating grass roots support that NC will get 50,000 people in a stadium. It is simply not going to happen. The biggest conurbation in Hampshire is Southampton and if life long fans drift away then that the enf of your Euro dreams I fear.
Without even trying, there's:
Man C
Stockport
Liverpool
Wigan
Bolton
Preston
Blackpool
Blackburn
Burnley
Bradford
Leeds
Sheffield United
Sheffield Wednesday
Chesterfield
Stoke
So, hardly an area sans competition.
By the way I agree about getting 50K to St Mary's but your knowledge of geography north of Watford is like everyone else's down here.

If you were looking for the right way to do it , look at mr Coates at Stoke let's Tony pullis do his job , never interferes and backs him to make the right choices in the transfer Market . Simples

But for the majority of true fans they will be supporting Southampton FC tomorrow night in what ever capacity they can & will continue to do so for eternity, as will I.
Just this morning I was looking at the photos on Saints OS from yesterdays training. Mauricio Pochettino looks like he can talk the talk (albeit with a pocket translator for now). But can he walk the walk? Only time will tell. He may well have a shaky start but he will have 100% support from me through thick & thin as he will from 1000's of other Sants fans. A morale boost for me was seeing the players response to him, seeing them laughing, joking & training. They are professionals & will act accordingly. We have to be professional fans & continue with what we have been doing in the past. That will never change. Saints need us now more than ever.
After each game Nigel would debrief with the team, get 1 Negative & 5 Positives from it, draw a line under it then move on to the next one. I think we can liken NA's managerial reign here to any match. We have all been debriefing it on here over the last couple of days. 1 Negative from me would be that I didn't agree with certain sub choices that he made at times (that being said I thought at Chelsea he got it bang on, just a shame we conceded in the first half). 5 positives? I could come up with over 500 positives as I'm sure most of us could. Now we thank Nigel for all he has done, wish him all the very best for the future, but we have to draw a line under his name & move on to Mauricio Pochettino.

Whatever everyone's personal reactions and over-reactions this has got to stop...
Firstly: the club NEED us whoever is in charge, all who think they are being loyal to NA, ask yourself would he want to see his work undone, the effort all for nothing, fans tearing each oter apart..NO, you dishonour him by being disloyal to the club...
Secondly: We love NA for his decency, dignity and SUCCESS, all this moralising would not exist if he had missed promotion last season and we did almost blow it...had we been firmly in the relegation zone would everyone be so outraged.NO...it is because he was succesfull AND decent not just the decency..so those who are venting at NA are you holier than thou?
Three: I wish NA had not gone HOWEVER I will not deny that some of our panicking and giving up possession, speed of play, and substitutions left me worried, I believe we can do better whether that was due to NA is yet to be seen.
Four: NC....judging from our early start he would be neglectful in the extreme if he did NOT line up successors...many including myself thought that we were getting there....
Five: our recent results look flattering in comparison to our early season form nonetheless we still have lost more points from leading positions than any other team.
Six: If we want a glowing future we have to think ahead, our greatest asset is our academy...as potential constant relegation candidates (if NA had reached his limits) those players who want honours and european football will always be destined to leave us...
Seven: If our academy grows and links in with Argentinian and Spanish youth and boy can they play..I ask all fans to think of the implications!!!
Remember that picture of the enlarged stadium, european football and a feeling of loyalty and belonging to all those poor SOUTHERN kids with no identity but a mufco shirt....
If Cortese gets it wrong he will pay the price....NA will always be a wonderful person to us, let us not forget what he taught us...together as one...
I remember the interview at the end of last season..the writing was on the wall for a long time...
I will miss him AND I want the South to for once have a chance to join the big league, with this in mind the new guy has to be welcomed and NC judged end of season we have a difficult run in did NC stick or twist who can tell until the fat lady sings.

As fans, we can only try to help them get the job done.

Great to meet the new gaffer today. hard first session but good fun ! Now excited for Monday's game and hope the fans support us as ever !

Seems like he is up for Monday a least. It was Adkins who gave him his break, but it seems players understand how quickly loyalties have to change in football to keeping moving forwards.

Who is Mauricio Pochettino, the man who Southampton has chosen to replace Nigel Adkins as manager of the Premier League club?
Coaching career: Former manager at Espanyol, where he was able to turn the team around with limited funds to finish in eighth place last season. Southampton will be his second position as a manager.
Personal: Born in Argentina in 1972.
Attributes: Has an eye for top talent at low prices. May be able to find some gems in the Spanish market. Pochettino prefers an attacking style of football with a possession-based style.

He was saying we would be relegated at the start of the season anyway and said that Adkins was naive. Merson is just a sour little man who has made so many mistakes himself and now sits on the moral high ground.

Anybody can have a vision when it's not their money to spend , ML will be turning in his grave at how bad the club have been made to look, all you cortese lovers wake up and smell the coffee , this bloke ain't a visionary this bloke is a control freak who likes to get his own way .
Been in football at all levels seen chairmen with the same problem many times first hand , they are not true supporters just see the club as a way to increase their profiles and fill their egos .
I and most of you will be supporting the saints a long time after mr cortese has left .
You will be supporting long after hes gone because of him!
Show some gratitude.

I don't think there is anything new to add that hasn't been said 100 times already. I, like many others, have felt upset & angry over the last 24 / 36 hours about this news that has shook our club as a whole. But like most of us are, we now accept it & continue supporting our team. If people want to boycott the game on Monday that's their decision, if some would rather support Nigel himself then drive safely every other fortnight up to Blackburn, then in another 2 years you could well become a Liverpool supporter, again drive safely.
TOGETHER AS ONE.
Oh when the Saints, go marching in,
Oh when the Saints go marching in,
I wanna be in that number,
When the Saints go marching in.
RED ARMY, RED ARMY, RED ARMY, RED ARMY,
RED ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRMY!

A TRUCE please.
Personally I want us to be playing against and associated with the best teams in Europe. I believe Cortese has the ambition to take us there and for any who have enjoyed the last three years, they have him to thank just as much, if not more so than Nigel.
There is no doubt that he is a driven and ambitious man and can be ruthless but he does have principles to a degree. We do not know all the issues surrounding NA, we do not know that his tenure as coach officially ended with us reaching the PL (he certainly alluded to a parting of the ways being inevitable) and maybe he was given extra time to prove himself. The reality is he was struggling and imo we would roll along just like the other mid-table clubs from now on if he improved.
When we got the result at Chelsea the other day, all the pundits and media talked about was Chelsea, not us. I don't want that attitude to continue. The "family" club with integrity died along time ago when Lowe arrived. He drained, starved and bankrupted the club for his own personal gain. But from the ashes one man has steered our return to the PL with investment and proper stewardship.
We all liked Nigel, we all love Matty but we wouln't put him in the team would we?
The kneejerk reactions I have seen over the last few days have been scandalous, without NC there would have been no Nigel Adkins and no Southampton FC.
Lowe deserved the vitriol, Cortese does not. Fans may not trust him because he can be ruthless, they may not like him because he stays out of the limelight or because he is not sentimental but the very least that Saints fans owe (and he deserves) is gratitude for restoring our club to it's rightful place.
Enjoy the ride!

I don't know what to make of it all to be honest.
I suppose we need to decide what we want as a club. Is it success at any price? Is it morality and integrity?
We must evolve, we don't know what has gone on behind the scenes and it could be that the decisions were made with integrity and morally but we are not a party to them.
It could be Nigel's tenure was already over and he knew it but was given extra time. I'm glad he has gone at his time with an unblemished cv and that could have been planned! Who knows?
We owe Nigel a lot and thereby owe NC a lot too for bringing him in
I'm sure Nigel would like us to go forward and be succesful so that he can look back and say I was a part of that.
We must all be a part, get behind our beloved club and enjoy the ride.

One thing for sure is that NA has left us a decent legacy, if we blow it by behaving like a lot of jerks, I am sure he would be disappointed. He always appeared to be an honourable gent. we should all be following his example.

Take me, I worked over 48 years with the same Company, I made the odd mistake, but the company knew I was good at the job, so they kept me on, and I finished with a completely unblemished record, they didn't know that's what would have happened when they employed me, I could have been a complete disaster. Nicola has made good decisions, but not always perfect ones, this is his biggest gamble yet, we have to trust his judgement, if it goes wrong, the clever dicks can say I told you so, while the idiots can say sorry I got that wrong, so what is the problem?
Where's our stripes? Bet we don't see them again under this regime.
