Saints season ticket holder hits out

Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

SAINTS season ticket holder Martin Van Tuyl believes he has been “held in contempt” following Nigel Adkins’ shock sacking.

Here is the letter Van Tuyl has emailed to the Daily Echo.

I have often been critical of Nigel Adkins. I could not understand for the life of me why he never got a decent centre half in during the summer. I was at both Villa and Chelsea and was quite bemused by Adkins' line up at Stamford Bridge. But his gamble paid off and we got four points from two very difficult away games.

If Cortese has sacked Adkins in November, I would not have been too critical.

But to sack him now at this stage of the season in the middle of the transfer window is utterly criminal. We are playing Everton, which was always going to be difficult but not impossible. A win on Monday would go a long way towards our survival. To give the job to Pochettino (WHO?) at this stage of the season is beyond a gamble. Pochettino speaks no English and I would doubt whether he knows a lot about our players or the league we are trying to stay in.

Added to all this mayhem, this act of vandalism will have given the teams around us a huge boost. Saints seemed to have turned the corner. I still thought it was going to be a nervous end to the season but...we had every chance of survival. Adkins deserved the chance to see the job throught until May.

The Everton game is now going to be interesting for all the wrong reasons. How are the crowd going to react to Pochettino? Are we now going to end up with the Chelsea scenario with Rafa? How are the players going to react? Are we still going to strengthen the squad?

Cortese seems to think the club needs to kick on to a higher level. After back to back promotions, the main objective was always to stay in the league.

Should we go down, is Pochettino equipped to get us back up?

As a season ticket holder, I have been held in contempt.

Yes, I was critical of Adkins but he earned the right to lead Saints until the end of the season.

One thing is beyond doubt, Pochettino had better hit the ground running. I don't think there will be much of a honeymoon period. Our league position will not allow it.

Martin van Tuyl, Kingsland season ticket holder

Er, yeah. That's what bosses do, particularly if they think it is the right thing to do. It's not always pretty. Cortese is in charge, and we would not have a Club at all, certainly not in the Premiership, if it weren't for Cortese. So yeah, he can sack who he wants. He has got nothing wrong yet, so far as I can see. All the over-emotional, histrionic, theatrical posts just make me laugh. Judge at season's end. It does not say on your season ticket: "We'll give you a ring to see what you think when we've got a decision to make". Grow up, and support the Saints. We have an important game on Monday night. Nigel is a multi-millionaire, thanks to Cortese, and will have another lucrative job in no time. Boo hoo.

I bet you also complained when Cortese sacked Pardew. As we all know that was a good decision, and I for one am prepared to accept that he has Saints best interest in his decision making.

I will be there on Monday cheering on the team and welcoming the new manager into the Saints family.

More extraordinary views from Saints fans. Exactly what rights do you think your season ticket gives you (beyond your seat of course)? That Mr Cortese will come round to knock on your door to personally canvas your opinion before he makes a decision? Im afraid it is time for all those fans who think their support somehow bestows upon them involvement in the running of the club to wake up to reality. Yes this was a harsh decision (and undoubtedly a risk at a crucial time in the season), but Mr Cortese has not done much wrong yet. I am sick of 'Saints fans' saying they now want us to go down, or that they will never come to St Marys again etc etc. Petulant and childish.

Tough call on Nigel Atkins

I have had my doubts through the season with some strange line ups and substitutions but believed he deserved the chance to see the season through

Whether we agree with the decision or not it has been made and we now need to get behind the new manager and continue to support the team

Cortese was right replacing Pardue. Who is to say this is not another good call. Only time will tell

Batesie I guess from the tone of your posts you are firmly in the NA hater category of fan that we have. How do you know that NA is a "multi-millionaire" and please stop INSULTING fellow saints fans just because you disagree with them. There is a sad and worrying trend on these threads that if someone disagrees with someone elses view they insult them like we are back on school playgrounds where bullying happened. Please may I respectfully urge to you respect other peoples views. You don't have to like them or even agree with them but your attitude sums up so much of what is wrong with modern Britain that only your view is right and matters. Yes I agree we need to judge at the end of season but in my opinion people have the right to express concern.

NA sacked for being very good at his job.

MP sacked by Espanol for being useless. (his replacement has revitalised the side with 4 wins and 3 draws out of the 9 games he's been in charge)

Cortese's fans will say that, whatever he does, he does for the good of the club, but it is no excuse to act like he does.
He is a thoroughly despicable poor excuse for a man, representing everything that is wrong with modern football and dragging the good name of Southampton football club through the mud.
I won't stop support the team, but this has left a nasty taste in the mouth.

A TRUCE please.

Whatever everyone's personal reactions and over-reactions this has got to stop...

Firstly: the club NEED us whoever is in charge, all who think they are being loyal to NA, ask yourself would he want to see his work undone, the effort all for nothing, fans tearing each oter apart..NO, you dishonour him by being disloyal to the club...

Secondly: We love NA for his decency, dignity and SUCCESS, all this moralising would not exist if he had missed promotion last season and we did almost blow it...had we been firmly in the relegation zone would everyone be so outraged.NO...it is because he was succesfull AND decent not just the decency..so those who are venting at NA are you holier than thou?

Three: I wish NA had not gone HOWEVER I will not deny that some of our panicking and giving up possession, speed of play, and substitutions left me worried, I believe we can do better whether that was due to NA is yet to be seen.

Four: NC....judging from our early start he would be neglectful in the extreme if he did NOT line up successors...many including myself thought that we were getting there....

Five: our recent results look flattering in comparison to our early season form nonetheless we still have lost more points from leading positions than any other team.

Six: If we want a glowing future we have to think ahead, our greatest asset is our academy...as potential constant relegation candidates (if NA had reached his limits) those players who want honours and european football will always be destined to leave us...

Seven: If our academy grows and links in with Argentinian and Spanish youth and boy can they play..I ask all fans to think of the implications!!!

Remember that picture of the enlarged stadium, european football and a feeling of loyalty and belonging to all those poor SOUTHERN kids with no identity but a mufco shirt....

If Cortese gets it wrong he will pay the price....NA will always be a wonderful person to us, let us not forget what he taught us...together as one...

I remember the interview at the end of last season..the writing was on the wall for a long time...

I will miss him AND I want the South to for once have a chance to join the big league, with this in mind the new guy has to be welcomed and NC judged end of season we have a difficult run in did NC stick or twist who can tell until the fat lady sings.

Fellow Saints fans,

Once we get over the emotional reaction to Nigel's sacking (the manner of which was the saddest part), we should reflect more carefully on Saints situation.

30 months ago SFC was close to the scrap heap (just like Poopey now are). We were rescued by St Markus AND by Cortese, his financial adviser, who put Markus onto the takeover of the club. Both have been revered by Saints fans as heroes, notwithstanding some concerns about Cortese's ways of doing business - e.g. the sacking of Pardew and his replacement with Nigel which was itself seriously questioned at the time and his ill-judged run-in with the media which means that they will take any chance now to rubbish Cortese for revenge.

We live in a different age. Football has (unfortunately, in my view) changed in many ways. The big money ownership by foreign magnates started with the big name clubs but is gradually spreading to the so-called smaller clubs. SFC now falls into that category. We can't turn back the clock. We can't beat 'em so we have to join 'em, unless we want to remain a football minnow.

Cortese is ambitious. He is still backed (we assume) by Liebherr money despite the demise of St Markus. We may not agree with his ways but surely we have to go with his ambition for SFC. If Cortese (and thereby the Liebherr family) call it a day and sell us to another rich foreign owner or a private equity consortium, who knows who will own the club. We can do without the likes of Poopey's erstwhile owners.

As some have said, the fans pay good money to watch the Saints but just think how much money is being put at risk by SFC's financial backers. I believe that Cortese is trying to fulfill St Markus's dream of making the Saints a truly major club and only that is keeping the Liebherr family on board. If the fans jeopardise that by withdrawing their full support of the team (and thereby the club), the Liebherrs will probably throw in the towel. And who could blame them?

We have to ask ourselves as devoted Saints fans (and I have been one for nearly 60 years): what do we want for our cherished club? The chance to reach the top of the tree or settling for at best mid-table mediocrity. Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice.

By all means, on Monday night give a final rendering of 'there's only one Nigel Adkins' because that is true. He did a great job for us, was a true gentleman and will long remain in the hearts of Saints fans. He kept his dignity even when he was thrown off the bus. His final message to the team says so much about the man but it is also a message to us fans. Keep the faith, keep believing in what we have been doing and keep improving.

We fans must also keep our dignity. We are not Chelski fans. We are THE SAINTS. Let's not let ourselves down by foolish behaviour at Monday's game. Support the team as we always have - the players need that support even more in the coming weeks with the uncertainties created by Nigel's departure. Let's stick together and reach for the top.

We owe it to Nigel who, given the nature of the man, will be as keen for Saints to progress as we must surely be and will, I believe, retain a genuine fondness for those 'great fans' as he sincerely called us.

In short, let's keep calm and carry on.

One thing is obvious despite all the mud slinging and handbag waving, we are all passionate about our team. No matter what has happened to us and whoever made it happen, we're still there week in week out.
We've enjoyed good times recently and were starting to look safe back in the Premiership. Yes Cortese is an enigma, maybe a genius maybe a fool, love him or hate him, he is our chairman and runs the club. I believe he wants Saints to be successful and will be ruthless and making this happen, I will not complain about success.
But I will complain about his total lack of humanity, to sack a successful man in this manner is despicable, and does leave a nasty taste.

I for one will not be joining in any protest of in any form (white hankies? please, we're already a laughing stock don't make it worse) I will be right behind MY team the team I love, I will continue to give it my all for the lads, also I will give señor Pochettino every chance to prove himself. As I am certain that all of you on here will do despite your difference of opinions.
