Cortese has ego problem - Le Tissier
12:34pm Sunday 20th January 2013 in Sport
Southampton hero Matt Le Tissier has accused executive chairman Nicola Cortese of having ''a bit of an ego problem'' following his shock decision to sack manager Nigel Adkins this week.
Le Tissier said he was stunned by news of Adkins' exit and replacement by Mauricio Pochettino - and slammed Cortese for his failure to account for his decision at a subsequent press conference.
Le Tissier said: ''I don't know if Nigel was becoming too popular and the chairman didn't like it - he does appear to have a bit of an ego problem.
''It is a little bit bizarre, but some of the decisions that have been made have been a little bit bizarre since the current chairman took over. In a way it wasn't a surprise because I think he's been looking to get rid of him for a while now.
''The strangest thing about it all for me was he brings the new manager in about a minute after he sacked Nigel and then he hangs the new manager out to dry at a press conference on his own, which I thought was an incredibly cowardly thing to do.
''If he's going to make those decisions surely he owes it to the fans to sit there and explain his decision, but he wasn't brave enough to do that.''

They have no experience of running a football club or a business so how the heck would they know?!
Every major decision that Cortese has made, has been the correct one!
The new coach has a very good track record and is very highly regarded in Spain/Europe. He has experience as a TOP player and manager in the BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD! He is a modern coach with proven results, especially bringing along young players.
This decision is taking Saints to a higher level and will secure Saints position in the Premiership.
(Adkins did a very good job and I feel sorry for him BUT Saints need to push on and this new Coach can do that.)

Tiss is only being honest, which is more then I can say for the Chairman, there are many questions left to be answered, 1- when did you apraoch the new manager, 2-when did you decide to apoint him, 3-how long was the new manager studying the team, why could you not ask Mr Atkin if he wanted to be promoted to a better roll as 'Director of football' rather then humiliate him with the sack. there are far to many questions to be answered, I dought the Echo has enough room to put them all down.

1. Who is Mr Atkin? I assume you mean Adkins?
2. If so, why on earth would Cortese promote a man he felt was failing to a better role (not roll)?

Saints fans - generally - do not want a self styled Italian JR with a craze for power sacking people to try to change Saints in to a top 5/6 team that challenges for silverware and European places. Most of us despise the 'money driven' glory hunting football clubs (Chelsea, ManU etc etc). Success for us is mid-table and will only come with good management on and off the field and sound investment in quality players - especially at the moment - defenders and a good quality goal-keeper. Sacking people when they are so popular only upsets the togetherness we have developed in the time Cortese and the Liebherrs have been with us.

Does cortese really think that we can be top 6 without a massive injection of cash ala Chelsea / man city . We are a premiership club with fantastic supporters but we wouldn't fill a 40k stadium week in week out , we couldn't compete with the big boys I am afraid , being realistic.

We would still have some low gates when it would be adviseable to do ridculouosly cheap deals with all schools in our catchment area...however we would comfortably exceed 42k for many games and create a much larger future fan base..
The South NEEDS a proper presence in the Premiership....NC knows this..

Nigel has been successful at every club at which he has been a manager. He achieved two back to back promotions and, having never played or managed in the SECOND BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD, has begun to demonstrate that the potential of the team to succeed that it had demonstrated in the challenging early matches, was beginning to be translated into tangible outcomes. I am confident that we would NOT have been relegated - and then would have 'pushed on' to what we might realistically hope to achieve - namely a position in the top 10 and, perhaps 5th to 8th at best. The new manager, Pocket Hanky, may well prove to be successful and I wish him well and will support him, of course, but the club has lost something from appointing someone who is only likely to achieve (at best) what Nigel would probably have achieved anyway.

Why should he 'learn to button it'? Are you the only ne that is entitled to express an opinion?
In your glowing coment about the new manager, I would not criticise your opinion that he has experience as a Top player, but what experience has he had as a manager? Getting Espanyol to bottom position in, what you consider to be, the BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD?
I think that Ian Branfoot could have managed that.
It would appear that in every newspaper that I have read today, their football pundits are in agreement with Le Tiss, so I imagine that you will be busy contacting them, telling them that, as they have no football management experience, they should 'button it' and listen to your word of wisdom.

Regarding Le Tiss, doesn't he have a personal grievance with Cortese?
Calling Cortese "cowardly" is out of order, and IMO, you need balls of steel to make this sort of decision when it would have been easier to sit back and do nothing.

Cortese has a football club and a business to run. He is obligated to succeed. His decisions so far have been correct (Including his advice to Liebherr to buy it in the first place when no man nor beast wanted it!)
The new guy is highly respected in Spain/Europe (do some research!) and is regarded as a modern coach (something we are lacking in England other than the foreigners in place already!) His record supersedes anything Le Tiss achieved (Yes, I know he was a fabulous player to watch!).

The problem is that Cortese is more ambitious than most fans are and this doesn't sit comfortably with the London-based pundits for whom Saints are a 'nice' team with a nice manager who play nice stuff and will usually give the big teams a nice three points. Ambition like Cortese's seems a little uncouth to them, but I'm glad someone is dreaming big for us.
Only time will tell if this will be a good move, and maybe it could have been handled better, but fans should go into it with an open mind. Are some of us secretly scared of success?

The top 4 teams are miles away from us in terms of crowds and finance but won't stop me supporting my team through thick or thin.
On the plus side we have an academy the envy of the premiership par none
i think best case scenario is extend the stadium to say 40k and we could occasionally break into sixth or seventh.
bearing in mind we could of finished 12th this season if we had carried on improving...signed a couple of players i.e. centre half
we would still of been ahead of the five year plan ...
im afraid it just looks like cortese has made a decision based on falling out with NA
he made up with puncheon and look what happened
it simply does look like ego ahead of club.

Le Tissier was speaking about Southampton Football Club. A club that he has been closely associated with since he was a young teenager.
As he is no mug, I am prepared to accept that, during that period, he has gained considerably more knowledge about the football-side of the club than Cortese will ever know.
By the same token, I would not back his knowledge on the financial aspects of running a football club against Cortese's.
Cortese's advice to Liebherr to buy the club was as business/financial investment, not a football one.
With Liebherr's death, Cortese is running the business, but appears to be sticking his nose into the football side of things. Abramovic has done so at Chelsea, and that is causing waves, with them not achieving what should be expected, considering the money invested.
The new manager's record as a player may be superior to anything that Le Tissier achieved, but considerably inferior to what Adkins achieved as a manager, and it is as a manager that he has been recruited, not as a player.
You ask me to do some research.
What did you discover when you researched Mauricio Pochettino achievements as a manager?
How do you think that compares to Adkins record?

Mlt was never a mercenary, ending his career on something like £4k a week. He turned down offers to move to several big clubs and remains loyal to this day. He entertained us for 15 years and was worth the entry fee alone!

MLT you are a total ledgend but you clearly have an issue with NC because you backed the wrong (thankfully)side. We don't have to like the chairman. If he is wrong in this I'm sure the Liebherrs are astute enough to replace him with somebody a bit more human.
Le Tiss ought to keep his thoughts to himself as a great player he was, his business ventures have all failed which speaks volume's about his business prowess, as I said on a thread yesterday if one of the big clubs came in for Nigel I have no doubt whatsoever that he would have gone (he did at Scunthorpe) and whatsmore he would be Knocking at Saints door for some of our players There is no loyalty in todays football except for the fans and there again I am not 100% sure of that!!
While he has been giving his undivided attention to getting the team into a better league position, the plotting has been going on behind his back to find a replacement.
With the way that Cortese has treated Adkins, is it not possible that he has also been devious in his dealings with Matt Le Tissier, which would account for there being no love lost between them?
I think that Cortese has got involved with the football side of the club, instead of concentrating on the administration side.

Cortese engaged with some past heroes (Paine, Dodd, Channon) bur not others (Le Tissier, Benali, Laurie Mac) due to ongoing feud. Celebrated 125 history with a special shirt with no advertising and really long historical articles in the programmes employing the likes of David Juson and Gary Chalk).
Worked hard to get the club back in the Premiership, including employing both Adkins and Pardew in the first place. Has made some controversial decisions but got them right to the benefit of the club. Does not communicate with the fans very well, but like Le Tiss does not really give a sh@t what others think even though it divides loyalties and harms the club.
At some point the feud between the club, certain ex-players and the Echo needs to end.

Me, I live in the here and now and tomorrow!
But hey, don't take my word for it - have a listen to this articulate and knowledgeable lady........

How does that compare with the length of time that Adkins has had in management.
Compare the success rate.

Here is some perspective for you:
Rupert Lowe - instrumental in taking us to the brink of extinction and almost bankrupting a club with 120 years of history by draining money for his own gain.
Le Tiss - instrumental in saving us from relegation for many years
Cortese - instrumental in saving us from oblivion
Whether you like NC or not, you, I and ever other Saints fan owe him a debt of gratitude for helping to save our club and making it the PL team it is today for without him we would be discussing how Eastleigh FC are doing!

I am one of the 0.1% of fans( according to gladbachsaint) that want to see Saints competing with the best in Europe and I believe that NC is the man to take us there. As many have said the timing and manner of NA's sacking was regrettable to say the least, but I believe his use of Gaston was poor and other selections questionable. Had we lost to Villa and Chelsea away (both very realistic given the way we played and teams picked, in particular Chelsea), would so many of those calling for NC to go now have disagreed with the need to replace Adkins? This desicion was made prior to these results and based on those before that could have been a lot better. Please lets get behind the new gaffer and leave the Xenophobic comments about him and Cortese out.
As I have said before thank you NA you were/are a gentlmen. It is time we followed that lead.

EVERYONE has a right to make a comment, and I never stated otherwise.
There is obviously no love lost between Cortese and Le Tissier, but I do not know the reason, and doubt that any other poster on here does either.
Will we hear Adkins reaction to his sacking?
I doubt it, because there would probably be a 'vow of silence' clause in his sacking agreement.
Will Cortese make a statement giving an acceptable reason, that we can understand and accept, for Adkins' departure.
On his past record, I very much doubt it.
This just leaves plenty of room for speculation by people who are most intersted.

Years one to three were spent getting into the PL and showcasing the academy. Year four is about demonstrating that SFC are a force in the PL and not just perennial 'strugglers'.
Year five is about selling the club to the highest bidder and NC will collect his incentive and depart.
The club is continually being groomed for this sale -turnstiles automated to reduce employment costs, programme sellers reduced, corporate lounges tarted up, nothing but adverts on the TV screens, new website, lick of paint in the stands, etc.
The first you will hear of the club sale is when it happens - but it will happen, just as soon as a decent set of financial results is in prospect. The higher up the league the club finishes the better the prize money!
Meanwhile, the fans will fill the seats and the coffers.
Your opinion (and MLT's) is not sought, valued or listened to.
All's fair in business (as in love and war). Adkins did a great job for us, we liked him, but he was dispensable.
I wish him all the best as he continues his successful career.

Just because you think that he is wrong is no reason to be so disrespectful. Such short memories some of you. Pathetic.
Le toss you are going the same way as Lundekvarm , you were a legend but you are beginning to act like a t w a t. You stand there trying to buy the club with money from someone who lived with his parents and had no money and ever since then all you do is knock NC. I guarantee in less than 6 months ALL saints fans will be gehind the team thinking how great life is. Stop jumping on the band wagon, including you daily echo. Le toss and the echo wonder why they aren't treated well by the saints, it's because of articles and comments like this
Mlt was never a mercenary, ending his career on something like £4k a week. He turned down offers to move to several big clubs and remains loyal to this day. He entertained us for 15 years and was worth the entry fee alone!
If I was embarrassed about the Adkins affair I'm even more so at reading the sh1t written by some on here. Nothing short of blasphemy!
Posting on here is like throwing seeds on stoney ground, your welcome to it and deserve all you get backing cortese. Sheep, ostriches, mugs.
No-one will disagree that what Le Tiss has done on the pitch makes him a Saints Legend.
He is however accountable for what he has done and says off the pitch since and it has not been lily white.
If he slags off others publicly, he should expect a reaction from those that don't agree.
Blasphemy? He is Le-god, but he is not actually a GOD.
Le tiss, loyal saints player who started and finished his career with us. Only fault was to back an opposing take over ( didn't see any other ex employees trying to help out) has remained loyal to this day and despite feud with chairman (who incidentally has not put up his own money but draws a tidy sum) remains loyal.
At th time, he was the only one showing any interest, and Matt lost quite a few quid by trying to save the club.
Le Tiss was not in competition with Markus Liebherr when he supported Fialko. At the time, he was the only one showing any interest, and Matt lost quite a few quid by trying to save the club.
Matt wanted to become chairman, fair play. His consortium pulled out after t
hey had a period of exclusivity when it turned out they could not get the points deducted. This could have been fatal for SFC. Cortese persuaded Marcus to take on Southampton debt & points deductions and all. Club saved and we have not really looked back.
Since then MLT has not lost an opportunity to snipe at Cortese in the press. I fo not think MLT is doing the club, the fans or himself any favors.
Fialko said that he would make Le Tissier Chairman when he took over, Matt did not seek the Chairmanship, but said that he would accept.
There is a difference.
There is no love lost between Cortese and Matt, but there was no problem between Liebherr and Matt.
In the past I have always found Matt to be an honest, straight forward person.
With the way that Adkins sacking, and immediate replacement took place, I don't think that I would be able to say the same about Cortese.
Maybe, one day the truth about the bad blood between them will come out. Until then, I will trust the one that I have come to trust over many years.
I am not defending Cortese or the way he sacked Adkins. Far from it.
I merely saying Matt Le Tissier is free to express his opinion, even if they comes across as bitter, and a bit crass sometimes.
I also believe people have the freedom to disagree how they will even disagree without being castigated.
If you know him so well why does he not speak our? Rather than snipe endlessly without justification, I would prefer he come out with it and we can make up our own minds.
SFC and Cortese are not the only ones with secrets who are not communicating effectively with fans,
Instead of name-calling, I suggest you re-read the comment that I made, which was in answer to one made by ghk.
I agree with you Cortese should communicate better with the fans.
