Thompson wants Blackpool job despite Adkins rumours

STEVE THOMPSON STEVE THOMPSON

Caretaker manager Steve Thompson refused to be drawn on rumours linking sacked Southampton boss Nigel Adkins with the Blackpool vacancy - maintaining he can be the man to take the club forward despite a 2-1 defeat against Cardiff.

Just 24 hours after his surprise sacking at Saints, Adkins has become one of the front-runners to succeed Michael Appleton at Bloomfield Road.

Goals from Tommy Smith and Kim Bo-kyung ensured Thompson's short reign featured its third consecutive defeat, however, while remaining tight-lipped about Adkins he was unafraid to talk of his own ambitions.

"There's always going to be speculation," said Thompson, whose side's goal came from a Gary Taylor-Fletcher header.

"I'm in charge - temporary charge - for the moment and until I hear anything different I'll keep going along but I think it needs sorting, especially for the lads because they need stability around the club.

"The players hear all the speculation, it needs sorting out. There are lads out of contract, there's lads who need the contract sorting. I'd be lying if I said it wouldn't be unsettling for them. Until we hear different we've just got to make sure we get them right.

"I've said from day one that Karl Oyston will make the decision and hopefully the right decision for Blackpool Football Club.

"I want to be number one of course I do. I've always said I'm ready, I'm ready to be number one but whatever Karl decides to do I'll back him 100%, with whatever role I have at Blackpool.

"I've just been in temporary charge. We've not actually sat down and spoken. That's Karl's decision - that's why he's chairman."

Well, Adkins's appointment likely to be imminent because Blackpool chairman may felt it's time for Thompson to go after three defeats in a row.

And according to a Blackpool paper, most fans favour Adkins than Thompson so he's likely to go and replaced by Adkins.

That is what it may likely to happen this week unless I am wrong.

I hope Adkins doesn't to Blackpool, there must be a reason Appleton left after only 12 games, and that O'Driscoll turned them down to go to bottom of the league instead. He should hold out for a more stable job, with some good youth players to bring through.

The tangerines are another club with too much boardroom interference. Nigel will do much better than them. As an aside I wonder if the Don tried to get Adkins to work with Mauricio. Off course he wouldn't as he is his own man but I wouldn't mind betting Cortese might have tried such a stunt because even he must realise the timing is potentially catastrophic.

Dreadful club, dreadful town. Don't go near Leeds either Nigel. Take two weeks on the golf course and Villa will come knocking mark my words.
