9:23pm
SAINTS SUB (62 mins): Guly off, Rodriguez on.

9:12pm
BOOKING (52 mins): Osman the first Everton player to be cautioned, after bringing down Luke Shaw.

8:46pm
HALF-TIME: Saints 0 Everton 0
8:45pm
CHANCE (43 mins): Puncheon's cross from the left picks out Lambert around about the penalty spot, but his thumping header flashes just wide of the post. So close again.
8:43pm
BOOKING (40 mins): Schneiderlin yellow carded for tripping Naismith in midfield.
8:41pm
CHANCE (37 mins): Ramirez drives forward from midfield, goes past Baines and hits a low right-foot shot that Howard turns behind for a corner. From the set-piece, Lambert's free header from six yards out is brilliantly cleared off the line by a retreating Jelavic, before the ball is played back in to Hooiveld in space, who controls on his chest and volleys straight at Howard. A couple of great chances for Saints gone begging there.
8:29pm
CHANCE (27 mins): Lambert sidesteps Jagielka in the area, leaving him with just Howard to beat, but from a tight angle. His curling left-foot effort is kept out by the Everton keeper.
8:26pm
BOOKING (23 mins): Hooiveld the first man to be cautioned, for bringing down Fellaini.
8:25pm
CHANCE (22 mins): Steven Naismith fires in a low half-volley from the edge of the area that Artur Boruc stops. First real effort from the visitors.
8:23pm
CHANCE (20 mins): Jagielka bundles over Ramirez 30 yards out, left of centre. Lambert steps up to take the free-kick and hits a beauty that cannons off the outside of the post and away to safety for Everton.
8:15pm
CHANCE (13 mins): Ramirez tries his luck from long distance, but his shot deflects off Jagielka and is palmed wide by Tim Howard in the Everton goal.
8:10pm
CHANCE (7 mins): Puncheon cuts inside onto his left foot on the edge of the area, but his low shot deflects off an Everton defender and goes just wide for a corner. Unfortunately, the set-piece then comes to nothing.
8:07pm
CHANCE (4 mins): Ramirez releases Lambert down the right. His low ball into the area is diverted just wide of the post by Everton's Jagielka - a necessary interception with Guly poised to convert had the ball reached him.
8:00pm
Chants of "There's only one Nigel Adkins" from the home supporters as the teams emerged onto the pitch.
7:56pm
The teams are out here at St Mary's. Kick-off just a few moments away. We will have updates for you here throughout the match.
7:42pm
Everton manager David Moyes is clearly not impressed with the actions at St Mary's in the last few days. Here's his take:
It’s disappointing. Nigel Adkins is a really good guy and earned the right to be involved in games like this, the way he got his teams promoted and also the way his team’s been playing in the Premier League. Undoubtedly tonight we’re playing against Nigel Adkins’ team. Obviously I’m disappointed for Nigel and I would have liked to have seen him here tonight.
Everton manager David Moyes
7:29pm
And here is Pochettino on what sort of reception he is expecting from the supporters this evening:
What I have been told about the Southampton supporters is that they’re really passionate and that they really support the team. I just want for them to keep on backing the team and backing the club, and hopefully we can get the victory tonight. I just want to say that I have been offered this position and I’m here with my maximum ambition and I’m really excited to be here.
Mauricio Pochettino
7:28pm
Mauricio Pochettino has been speaking to Sky before tonight's match. Here's what he had to say when quizzed about any changes he has made:
Basically we’re maintaining the structure that was previously there. I have maximum respect for the job that was done previously. In time we will develop more concepts, we’ll bring in new directions and concepts. We just made some little changes, but the main structure is maintained.
Mauricio Pochettino
7:14pm
Just worth a mention that Nigel Adkins did not get a single mention in tonight's matchday programme.
That 'acknowledgement' in the statement when he was sacked was the sum of the club's thanks for back-to-back promotions!
7:13pm
So two changes to the team that drew with Chelsea with Rickie Lambert and Gaston Ramirez in for Steven Davis and Jay Rodriguez.
7:11pm
Teams
Saints: Boruc, Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Shaw, Puncheon, Schneiderlin, Cork, Do Prado, Ramirez, Lambert.
Subs: K Davis, Richardson, Fox, S Davis, Chaplow De Ridder Rodriguez.
Everton: Howard, Coleman, Baines, Jagielka, Distin, Naismith, Pienaar, Neville, Osman, Fellaini, Jelavic
Subs: Mucha, Heitinga, Oviedo, Mirallas, Hitzlsperger, Anichebe, Duffy
7:07pm
Everton team: Howard, Coleman, Baines, Jagielka, Distin, Naismith, Pienaar, Neville, Osman, Fellaini, Jelavic
7:02pm
An hour until kick off.
Team news expected in about 15 minutes.
6:40pm
As for Mauricio Pochettino, we haven't heard too much on the game itself.
The brief press conference last week was about it and, due it taking a long time as it was largely conducted through an interpreter we got only a few snippets – but one cracking name drop.
They included: "I know the Premiership really well. In Spain we follow it closely. I am a great admirer of English football.
"I spoke at length with people that know this league such as Jose Mourinho, who is a good friend of mine.
"He told me the best football in the world is being played here.
"The challenge is to win all the games that are ahead of us. In the background there is a project to grow the club.
"Very good players have come out of the academy here. We need to keep on reinforcing that structure so that in the long term we can be one of the strongest clubs in England."
6:21pm
Saints fans will be waiting to see if there is a debut for new signing Vegard Forren.
The Norwegian’s £4m capture played second, third, maybe even tenth fiddle to the managerial changes last Friday.
He said: "The plan the chairman has for this club is fantastic. There is a good, young squad here and the way they play fits me well, so I hope I can join the team and get some good results."
5:57pm
David Moyes also admits he is unsure of what to expect from this evening’s game on the back of the sacking of Nigel Adkins.
The Scot said: "It's a really difficult one to judge because I actually think Southamptonhave been playing quite well. I'm not quite sure what effect it will have on the players but when you get a new manager you get on with it.
"I don't think players mope around too long about the manager, and I mean that with real respect for Nigel, but I think players just get on with their job. I would expect them to do that and it will be difficult.
"I don't know what the atmosphere will be like, I would have expected the supporters to have probably been in Nigel's camp because of the work he'd done there."
5:54pm
It's a tough opener for Mauricio Pochettino. His first #BPL match as boss is against David Moyes - who is preparing for his 412th. #SOUEVE

5:37pm
Just in case you've not had enough of the opinions about Nigel Adkins' sacking, here are some more:
5:36pm
David Moyes hopes Rickie Lambert does not register his 11th goal of the season when Everton visit Saints tonight, but the Toffees boss is encouraged to see the striker doing so well.
Lambert has spent most of his career in the lower leagues with the likes of Macclesfield, Stockport, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers, but has had no trouble adjusting to the top level.
The 30-year-old's 10 goals make him the joint leading English goalscorer in the Barclays Premier League along with Tottenham's Jermain Defoe, leading to talk of a possible England call-up.
Moyes said: "Like a lot of the Southampton players who have moved up through the leagues, he's done very well.
"Some of them have gone the distance with them, some of them have joined in as they've gone along but I think they've tended to keep the soul of the club.
"Rickie Lambert's been a great goalscorer through his career and he continues to do so."
5:29pm
The M271 is clear again after a broken down lorry was removed, so all of you coming in that way have nothing to worry about, other than Marouane Fellaini.
5:20pm
THREE HOURS TO GO Southampton can go 14th with a handsome win tonight; Everton could move a point behind Tottenham, who are fourth. #SOUEVE

For years English football has dramatically lagged behind continental (particularly spanish) football...
Whilst the premiership disguises the facts with hordes of foreigners, our English players 'all' take too long on the ball, lose possession too easily and do not think quick...
I have complained this season that our SFC tempo was often too slow and we gave the oppossition too much time to cover defensively..
Giving the ball away with hoofed kicks is symptomatic of a lack of belief in keeping possession..
For years I have wanted England to do things in one movement not three..
To think that OUR team SFC could be at the forefront of this style of play is unbelievable...and remember the teams we create with this style of play only work as a team who are all trained the same.
This is why Messi is fantastic for Barca but often disappears for Argentina..therefore if we create this style of play many of our players will not WANT to leave...

Look on the bright side, Nigel will come again and many of us will watch his progress with added interest, but tonight is all about the team.
They have to shackle Fellaini and get in the way of every Baines shot, and deal with the rest of a very good Everton team, who like Arsenal and MU have benefitted hugely from having a long term manager!!
A win tonight should be dedicated to Nigel!!

We're starting earlier than normal due to the exceptional events of the last few days, which leave tonight's game with more importance than it already had.

As previously reported on the Echo tactics: Pochettino usually favours a positive, attacking style of play using a 4-2-3-1 formation. He deploys a back four with two holding midfielders, wingers to support a lone front man and an attacking midfielder in support through the middle.
This would suit:
Ricky upfront with Rodrigues, Ramirez and Puncheon behind.
Cork and Schneiderlin holding in front of the back 4.
Get your money on a high scoring draw in my book!

You don't have a seat. Despite the fact that you're NEVER going again, you won't even tell us a seat number. Think that through, you won't tell us the number of an EMPTY seat? Really?
You've only posted on here for the past week or two; you're making it up as you go along.
Early Friday morning (before the news) you were saying it was OK for Adkins to go; now it's a point of principle because he's gone that you won't go to the game.

It just doesn't add up, I'm afraid.

The tragedy of last few days is not necessarily the decision NC took. It's how it was handled. Seems to me we don't manage energy in games quite as well as we shd. We often dominate first part of a game, then fade badly. We're as fit as others, just go for it a little TOO fiercely early on. A slight tweak on that could yield better overall results...
But the journey goes on... A while back if we thought we could have kept clean sheet against top 6 side, we'd have leapt at it.

If we can press at that tempo and play at that intensity for the whole match, or even at least a half, I think we'll be fine this season.
I think that that's where Adkins sometimes struggled, we were always up for the big games and pressed hard, but sometimes against the smaller teams, we stood off and were too welcoming to the opposition, like v Wigan and Sunderland.
Be good to see them after they've had time in Barca together and whether he makes any changes to team or formation

In fact, they all played blinders, bar maybe one. I do feel that the Hoover has been told "no fancy stuff" or has totally lost confidence because he's just hammering it up the field every time there's any doubt in his mind whatsoever. Seems to work OK, though.
Once we have Fonte and Forren fighting fit and striving to be in the team I'll be pretty confident about our back four.

It's a credit to the league and as good, if not better, than the late 80s.
Shaw, Clyne, Cork, Puncheon, J-Roy, Lallana, Ward-Prowse, and Rickie. Surely that amount of mostly young British players of that quality is unmatched in this league?
Amazingly, Pardew's Newcastle had just one starter from the British Isles on Saturday, and seems they are going to add more French players in the coming weeks. Poor I think.

Borat looked much better and those who critised Yoshy were watching another game to me, I thought he did well... With no AL Gaston looked a bit lost at times and was trying too much on his own so I would look for another attacking midfielder but assuming Fonte recovers reasonable quickly and with Cork able to fill in at the back I would leave the defence as-is...
Now he's seen the team in action live he'll know where to strengthen it ( I Hope) to take us up that extra gear & with his Spanish/Argentinian contacts maybe he can bring in an older player until our youngsters are ready to step up?
