Undoubtedly tonight we’re playing against Nigel Adkins’ team. Obviously I’m disappointed for Nigel and I would have liked to have seen him here tonight.

As for Mauricio Pochettino, we haven't heard too much on the game itself.

The brief press conference last week was about it and, due it taking a long time as it was largely conducted through an interpreter we got only a few snippets – but one cracking name drop.

They included: "I know the Premiership really well. In Spain we follow it closely. I am a great admirer of English football.

"I spoke at length with people that know this league such as Jose Mourinho, who is a good friend of mine.

"He told me the best football in the world is being played here.

"The challenge is to win all the games that are ahead of us. In the background there is a project to grow the club.

"Very good players have come out of the academy here. We need to keep on reinforcing that structure so that in the long term we can be one of the strongest clubs in England."

Saints fans will be waiting to see if there is a debut for new signing Vegard Forren.

The Norwegian’s £4m capture played second, third, maybe even tenth fiddle to the managerial changes last Friday.

He said: "The plan the chairman has for this club is fantastic. There is a good, young squad here and the way they play fits me well, so I hope I can join the team and get some good results."

The Scot said: "It's a really difficult one to judge because I actually think Southamptonhave been playing quite well. I'm not quite sure what effect it will have on the players but when you get a new manager you get on with it.

"I don't think players mope around too long about the manager, and I mean that with real respect for Nigel, but I think players just get on with their job. I would expect them to do that and it will be difficult.

"I don't know what the atmosphere will be like, I would have expected the supporters to have probably been in Nigel's camp because of the work he'd done there."

David Moyes hopes Rickie Lambert does not register his 11th goal of the season when Everton visit Saints tonight, but the Toffees boss is encouraged to see the striker doing so well.

Lambert has spent most of his career in the lower leagues with the likes of Macclesfield, Stockport, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers, but has had no trouble adjusting to the top level.

The 30-year-old's 10 goals make him the joint leading English goalscorer in the Barclays Premier League along with Tottenham's Jermain Defoe, leading to talk of a possible England call-up.

Moyes said: "Like a lot of the Southampton players who have moved up through the leagues, he's done very well.

"Some of them have gone the distance with them, some of them have joined in as they've gone along but I think they've tended to keep the soul of the club.

Whilst the premiership disguises the facts with hordes of foreigners, our English players 'all' take too long on the ball, lose possession too easily and do not think quick...

I have complained this season that our SFC tempo was often too slow and we gave the oppossition too much time to cover defensively..

Giving the ball away with hoofed kicks is symptomatic of a lack of belief in keeping possession..

For years I have wanted England to do things in one movement not three..

To think that OUR team SFC could be at the forefront of this style of play is unbelievable...and remember the teams we create with this style of play only work as a team who are all trained the same.

This is why Messi is fantastic for Barca but often disappears for Argentina..therefore if we create this style of play many of our players will not WANT to leave...

Big IF. however if that is Cortese's vision I am firmly on the Bus..here's hoping..

Amid all the controversy about the dismissal of NA and the appointment of MP the simple truth is that Cortese panicked when Saints were shipping goals last November. MP became available from Espanyol and after some mutual sniffing we find we have a new manager. Unfortunately for Cortese, NA and the team have sorted themselves out in the meantime. The result? A potential disaster. The new guy has done nothing which remotely justifies the upheaval. As I say Cortese panicked. He's the man who is out of his depth, not Nigel. Get behind the team tonight.

Ramierez is better in the hole than on the wing, but with J-rod playing means Lambert cab drop deeper and out wide like he does at times, allowing Punch and Ramierz to cut in like they love to do, so on to a winner there!

Well, luckily nobody took me up on my bet that NA would still be manager at the end of the season - although I think that was more cowardice on the part of people who were giving it large than anything else -

I still think it was a terrible decision, but I've liked what I've read about the new guy and, after a few choruses of "One Nigel Adkins" tonight, I'm going to support him as best I can.

I've bet on Saints to win tonight - I think the boys will do it for Nigel!

I will be watching Ramirez closely tonight...with Lallana out he is the player who can spark us into life!

As previously reported on the Echo tactics: Pochettino usually favours a positive, attacking style of play using a 4-2-3-1 formation. He deploys a back four with two holding midfielders, wingers to support a lone front man and an attacking midfielder in support through the middle.
This would suit:
Ricky upfront with Rodrigues, Ramirez and Puncheon behind.
Cork and Schneiderlin holding in front of the back 4.
Get your money on a high scoring draw in my book!

For belief, we should look to Lyon in France, in the past referred to as the 'French Southampton'. In a town where football was never that big, with clever management and transfers, they rose from Ligue 2, up to win Ligue 1. They went on to win it for 7 consecutive seasons. Whilst people will say, so what it's the French league, this was a great achievement and they now regularly get to the last 16 of the Champions League. I believe that is what Cortese wants to achieve here and I would love to see it happen.

Time to wrap up and brace the elements.
Just feel tonight we are going to have a disillusioned team wondering what the hell is going on.
Breaks my heart think Everton will win
3-1. Before friday I thought a 2-1 win for Saints or a draw.
I just hope we can lift them out of that and we the fans can inspire them. This game has come too early for the team.
We need to rise to the occasion cos if we don't I don't think the team will.

Could be other reasons (cold weather, Monday night, live on Sky), I hope people aren't boycotting the club.

Was interesting watching the Leicester game on Friday, just 8,000 turned up from 20,000 tickets sold because of the snow. The ground looked so empty you'd have thought it was hosting a reserve game.

The tragedy of last few days is not necessarily the decision NC took. It's how it was handled. If he'd said: "Nigel Adkins has done an amazing job, and we're going to send him out in style, but I really believe I've found a manager who can build on his great work and take Saints to a whole new level" ...a lot of the pain of the last couple days would have been avoided. Even if, for reasons we don't know, he fell out with Adkins, he should have done that.

But early signs on MP promising.

Fans and players have been an absolute credit to the club and to Nigel tonight, absolutely brilliant, just need to keep it going for the full 90 - not a boo in sight.

Nigel would want them and us to be positive and I'm sure he'll be keeping in touch to tell the players he wants them to kick on.

Apologies for my seat being empty tonight, but I am iced in at home in Scotland. Nothing to do with NA dismissal. I have long advocated that NA has been out of his depth, but I must emphasise that he acted honourably at all times. I do wish him well. In my opinion, Cortese is arrogant beyond belief.

Disappointing we didn't convert first half chances, but overall a good result for Saints.

Seems to me we don't manage energy in games quite as well as we shd. We often dominate first part of a game, then fade badly. We're as fit as others, just go for it a little TOO fiercely early on. A slight tweak on that could yield better overall results...

But the journey goes on... A while back if we thought we could have kept clean sheet against top 6 side, we'd have leapt at it.

Brilliant first performance, full of heart, quality and no little skill.

Will be relieved when he gets his first goal/win so the idiot cliche media and commentators can't throw the 'without a win/goal lazy stats at us, but well done the Saints, well done the fans - another example of us being a credit to the club this season, even if the chairman hasn't.

When Adam is back and the Norwegian guy is in we will be looking great once the next few matches are out of the way.

Anyone else think Boruc and even Jos are beginning to look the part?

----> the referee was a shocker for both teams
---> the support from the stands was sensational

Don't think the result is important, the point is good but we could have won that +2 goals, but thats football. I think the team played really well especially the first half, plenty of passing and moving, yoshida done well I think and the boys in the centre of the park were great. Already you can see MP's style creeping in, although we did play the normal long ball from the back it look as though they were trying to play it out of the back a little more, defensively though we looked better and to be honest we could'nt ask for a better person to sort the defense out then an ex-argie international defender. Everton have only lost 3 games in their last 30 and thats some feat, we looked the better team on the night and with the luck a little more our way we could have beat them conprehensively...CO

Important not to lose tonight to keep us away from the bottom 3.
If we can press at that tempo and play at that intensity for the whole match, or even at least a half, I think we'll be fine this season.
I think that that's where Adkins sometimes struggled, we were always up for the big games and pressed hard, but sometimes against the smaller teams, we stood off and were too welcoming to the opposition, like v Wigan and Sunderland.
Be good to see them after they've had time in Barca together and whether he makes any changes to team or formation

Chrome works well for me with Adblock Plus as an 'extension'. Pop ups and banner ads are a thing of the past for me. Still got that annoying 'Prem Lge News' though, getting quick with the mouse though and can kill the sound now before it starts, but it is irritating.

We gained a solid point tonight against a top side.

We were impressive considering it was Mauricio Pochettino's first game too.

We saw real passion and commitment from our boys tonight and we stepped it up a gear from our usual pace of play. We were brilliant for the first 60 minutes especially.

The player's were the hungriest I've seen them and they played at a faster pace too.

If this is what's to come.....bring it on.

Where was the Echo's Sissy protest?...clearly Echo the fans are fully behind Nicola don't you think?.

The appreciation singing for Nigel was fitting....we can now move on and draw a line under it.

That increase of tempo has been called for by many posters..myself at least 10 times and look...blöödy marvellous..

I think our players at times do not believe enough and bring pressure on themselves by hoofing and defending deep...other than a few dodgy moments a win was possible right to the end...

Make no mistake losing tonight was avoided because we cannot risl losing at home..however I feel that when we have nothing to lose ie mufco..we could get something...Wigan must win...MCFC with a full squad and Spanish training....woo woo..

Please, please, please can I begin to believe that with his performance tonight the irrational Guly hatred might just begin to die down?

I thought he played an utter blinder.

In fact, they all played blinders, bar maybe one. I do feel that the Hoover has been told "no fancy stuff" or has totally lost confidence because he's just hammering it up the field every time there's any doubt in his mind whatsoever. Seems to work OK, though.

Once we have Fonte and Forren fighting fit and striving to be in the team I'll be pretty confident about our back four.

Luke astounds me every time. He NEVER looks his age - he's a corker.

P.S. I was only joking about the Guly hatred dying down - on the way out of the game I heard two different groups of people saying he was awful tonight. I assume their seats weren't facing the pitch.

Chrome works well for me with Adblock Plus as an 'extension'. Pop ups and banner ads are a thing of the past for me. Still got that annoying 'Prem Lge News' though, getting quick with the mouse though and can kill the sound now before it starts, but it is irritating.

The fans DID lift them. So high they could easily have won. So high they made the fifth team in the division look very ordinary. So high that they must have felt the whole city was on their side. It made me proud to be a Saints' supporter.

Thought that GR & GDP played well tonight, not seen either of them put in a shift like that before, even winning 50/50's and putting their foot in which was good to see, MS & JC look made for each other and the two centrehalfs look comfortable and composed, we could have the two best full backs in our team in the next 2 or 3 years, they just look to get better and better, and SRL works his nuts off and a good choice for captain, got to say though I think Boruc has made that position his own with an assured display.
Glad there were no protests tonight, NA done well for us, but thats football, we have a new manager and tam behind the team now so let hope he has an bigger effect on the team as NA did when he took over from AP.

I always feel let down by Guly..not tonight though..

his short game was good and he gave 100% but he does not look good enough for the Prem in a team like Saints. He is not quick enough to anticipate and is a midfielder who never looks like scoring. I am sure he will either get much better under MP or he will thrive elsewhere next season.... either way if he gives 100% like tonight, no-one can ask more.

This is all going to come out well, the plan for were NC is going has been thought about very carefully, refined (unlike the sacking), shaped and all on his terms...he KNOWS were he is going and we are going to be a serious proposition...mark my words...already we are better than a bottom half team..tactics, no fear and pressure on them not us just need to be addressed.

Now take a youth set up to share with Espanyol and Barca..ffs...

...then quality signings...

...then an entire setup to play the game as a unit...

...believe me I have bought the vision...if it works we will not be on the map we will be the map..

Proud, as I have been many times this season of the amazing amount of English talent throughout our team.

It's a credit to the league and as good, if not better, than the late 80s.

Shaw, Clyne, Cork, Puncheon, J-Roy, Lallana, Ward-Prowse, and Rickie. Surely that amount of mostly young British players of that quality is unmatched in this league?

Amazingly, Pardew's Newcastle had just one starter from the British Isles on Saturday, and seems they are going to add more French players in the coming weeks. Poor I think.

We matched a good Everon team. Great first half! No need to poo ones pants in the last 10 minutes. Boruc, Guly and Ramirez look better players. Lambert could have won it in the first half.

Most importnat thing we did not bottle it as players or supporters. The future is bright.

Can't criticise Hoover tonight, he very obviously strained a groin in the second half, but refused treatment let alone go off, he is determined, hard nosed and totally committed to us for whatever reason, yes he is a bit clunky, but effective when we were under the cosh. He will have to step down when a fully fit Fonte comes back I suspect, and Yohida will feel threatened when Forren is fit, at last we will have strength in depth in the CB department and can't rule out the possibility of another comng in.

It was clear he had already worked on the defence, did you notice the "arms-wide" drills they had clearly been practising in training ? Last night in the second half it was all about getting quality in the box for players to feed on and intelligent passing when running thru, I am not sure we need much more in the way of squad really. Borat looked much better and those who critised Yoshy were watching another game to me, I thought he did well... With no AL Gaston looked a bit lost at times and was trying too much on his own so I would look for another attacking midfielder but assuming Fonte recovers reasonable quickly and with Cork able to fill in at the back I would leave the defence as-is...

Cracking match to watch, shame we didn't convert the chances in the first half, but hey ho, it's a point and a clean sheet :-)

Agree with Velleity - Shaw looks mature and composed, a credit to our set up. Look forward to his senior England call up.

I must admit I had a very muted weekend fearing for the future of SFC, but as long as we carry on as we are and don't revert back to being a selling club, those fears have been obliterated.
