Pochettino praises Saints fans

Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

New Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino thanked both his players and the fans for their support after tonight’s goalless draw with Everton.

Saints produced an impressive display on their way to a point in the Argentine’s first game in charge after replacing Nigel Adkins following his controversial sacking last week.

While Adkins’ name was sung loudly by the supporters, the team and Pochettino were also given plenty of backing.

Speaking through a translator, the manager said: “I just want to thank the players for the three days that they’ve been working with me. They’ve done very well today and in these three days.

“I also want to thank the supporters. They have been very kind with me and the reception has been amazing.

“I think tonight we’ve done very well. We’ve created at least seven good chances to score.

“The only shame was that we didn’t score any goals. We created a lot of chances, and were facing a very good side in Everton. They’re fifth in the league, I believe.

“So I think the team deserves a lot of credit. We did suffer a bit more in the second half, but again we were creating chances, and we just needed that bit more luck.”

That game was a credit to Nigel's memory, and a credit to the Saints fans; we were behind the team all the time, giving a few choruses for Nigel but not so as to disrupt the team, and giving the new guy a good reception. I'm not proud of the way our chairman acts, but I'm proud of us - just a shame we couldn't get three points, too, but we were the better side and, had Ramirez not gone off, I think we would have won in the end. But a good base for the rest of the season, I think.

Thanks again, Nigel, for everything.

Proud of the fans tonight. Didn't expect anything else but nice to show the world what we stand for. Hope Nigel heard us.

Proud of Pochettino too. Must have been nerves galore but hope he feels at home here. He looks eager to learn the language too.

Finally, proud of the team.Really tough game and the first half especially was fantastic. Should have scored 3 and not many teams will be able to do that to Everton.

Futures still bright.

Totally agree. Nigel has built a solid base and we now need to build on it. A bit more pace up front to support Ricky when Gaston is not there would be good. Glad to dee Boruc coming on as a reliable keeper that brings confidence in and to the back four.

I am absolutely proud of the supporters tonight, sensible and enthusiastic, and celebrated Nigel Adkins in the best way possible. The only negative was the lack of a message in the Programme from Cortese, poor form in my view, if he wants to win the fans respect he has to begin by communicating if he can. 0 0 was a fair result, could have been ours had we finished better. Some players visibly tired in the second half, fitness needs to be addressed. Boruc was my MoM, Howard was theirs!

Well done Saints fans. We really are the best!

A good performance tonight. I thought Guly had a good game but Ramirez seems unable to last 90 minutes. Rodriguez might also have done better in the 20 minutes or so he was given with fresh legs.

Morgan (Sky's MOTM) and Cork did their usual double act as defensive midfielders. They are becoming a good pairing.

Ricky does trouble defence but it needs a strong support attacker to take advantage.

A good start for the new manager whom we must continue to give our full backing.

Onwards and upwards,

A desperate attempt by you to make the facts fot your theory but, unless there were hundreds of people who by sheer coincidence sit together who all by some miracle happened not to come, you're just plain wrong.

The empty seats were in all the areas you'd expect in a game that simply didn't sell out. The corner between Chapel and Itchen, some seats directly behind the goal and the usual bunches of seats in the Itchen.

Shame you're going to miss the rest of the season from the season ticket seat you don't actually have in your little fantasy world...

Well you know what Nigel always said, draw the blue line under it and move on, we have moved on, you just worry about getting back into the Premier so that we have another Southern team to compete with, not quite the same as our proper local derby but we all know that isn't going to happen soon....

I agree Felleini is a hard working player and he suits the direct long ball game Everton play . I thougt Everton are another Stoke city really . Long direct balls into danger areas with big front men . Not the Southampton way which is going to the next level . There were improvements to the way Saints played already last night especially Gully . Let's face it Adkins took us as far as he could really , this new manager will take us onwards and upwards . Very impressed with last nights performance .
