Pochettino 'felt kindness' from Southampton fans
6:00am Tuesday 22nd January 2013 in Sport
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Mauricio Pochettino
Mauricio Pochetinno said he “felt the kindness” from Saints fans as his first game in charge at St Mary’s ended in a goalless draw against Everton.
The new manager has been in a spin over the weekend, trying to get to know his players and prepare for the game against the Merseysiders as the dust settles on his controversial appointment in place of Nigel Adkins.
Pochettino got a decent enough welcome from Saints fans who are still hurt by Adkins’ departure – not helped by the fact that last night’s matchday programme didn’t even mention the former boss’s name – but are keen to support the new man.
“I really felt the kindness and I am very grateful for the reception that they have given me and my staff,” said Pochettino through a translator after the game.
“Everything that I’ve been told about Southampton supporters is true – they are very kind and they really support their team so I just want to repay them with honesty and work and I’m very proud to be their manager.”
It was largely Adkins’ team playing in the same way but the new manager was pleased with what he saw. “Everything is very new in a first game like this but I’m very happy with the performance and the players,” he reflected.
“They put in a great effort and I want to congratulate them with that. “Also the fans, I’m very proud of who they are and how they have taken me in.
“As for the game we created very clear chances against a very good Everton side and we have established how we intend to go forward.
“I really wanted my players to focus on being offensive against Everton. “We really wanted to be attacking minded so we were really working the long balls and also the high defensive line.
“We worked a lot on pressuring them a lot and disrupting their attack and how their midfield players link up with their attacking players.
“We were just focussing on very vertical, high-speed football.” He added: “The only shame was that we didn’t score any goals. We created a lot of chances, and were facing a very good side in Everton. They’re fifth in the league, I believe.
“So I think the team deserves a lot of credit. We did suffer a bit more in the second half, but again we were creating chances, and we just needed that bit more luck.
“I really enjoyed the game. When you’re watching it from the outside, you don’t really realise the dimension of it and how big it is.
“Just being in it you do realise and are aware of how amazing it is and why the people who work here or have worked here say it’s such an amazing league.”

Agree with concerns over J Rod, he does not seem to have that extra special gift to make things happen. Un less Poch can work some magic?
Pity we didn't get a bit more luck in the 1st half last night. First 0-0 for 2 yrs at home.

The support handled things fantastically well, they supported the team and MP, but certainly made it very clear that NA was not forgotten.
The team played well for the most part and the keeper such a Cinderella against Arsenal, looked very good tonight.
Sometimes we do not get the acknowledgement for what we are achieving. We are in the middle of a very tough run, In four of the last five games we have played draws. Yet they have been against top ten sides. Stoke and Chelsea away, Everton and Arsenal at home. With a little more luck we would of won three of them.
To put last night's effort into context, Everton have lost only 3 times in 31 games.
Welcome MP.

Also, although Ramirez done some good things last night, he does frustrate me when he keep trying to take players on when its easier to make the pass, as he invariably loses the ball and ends up on his backside waves his arms in the air.

On another day we'd have been two or three up at half time but you can't grumble too much at a draw with Everton.

Reading through most of the national newspapers today there is a strong note of disappointment. The reporters were clearly down in the mouth, especially by:
* The failure of the fans to be disruptive, but instead dignified, in their affectionate and of course, proper, acknowledgement of Nigel.
* The failure of the team to be off colour, but instead to put on a good and energetic display.
* The failure of the fans to boo Mauricio or throw tomatoes at Cortese, but instead to focus on supporting the team.
Unfortunately the perfect story line for the media was a disaster caused by an evil chairman and incompetent new manager - both "foreigners" of course. They wanted all the pathos around the shooting of Bambi's mum combined with all the angst of a particularly angry episode of Eastenders.
Thank goodness, the fans and the team didn't give it to them. We didn't shoot ourselves in the foot as they have at Chelsea. Instead, they got the balance exactly right. We've spent too long in the lower divisions to be tempted to take ourselves back there on a wave of self pity and destructive emotion.
Well done Saints fans - "man, woman and child of the match" for me.
We avoided a potential crisis last night. Now we're four points clear of relegation and have a nine day break. Just what the doctor ordered.

OK I'll admit it was your vision to get involved with the Saints.
And yes it is down to you that you have turned a £30M investment into a £200M setup in just a few short years.
But let's face it you havn't won anything have you. We the supporters have had to put up with this abject failure on your behalf. OK I'll admit that we got promotion both years and are now back in the Promised Land. But you don't seem to have learned anything do you? I seems we're not going to win this league either.
OK Nige had to go because we could only draw with the European champions. But now you've brought in this foreign guy who cant even speak the language. And with the same squad he could'nt even beat Everton, who are not even in a Champions League spot.
Rickie Lambert is clearly the best player in the world and because of our lowly mid-premier league position he has gone unrecognised. That title has now gone to some guy called Messy who plays for some little Spanish side Called Barker or something like that. Surely you knew that Pep Guardiola was available. Now we've missed out on him to some German side. Buyern something or other.
Our clubs going the same way as it was under Rupert Lowe. The only slight difference I can see is he took us down every year and you are taking us up
As we are by far the best fans not only in the South, but in the whole world and the universe we are prepared to stand by you a little longer. You lack vision for the club. Why have you put a 5year plan in place? 3 years would have been sufficient. Next season we demand the Premier League title and the following year the Champions of Europe. At the same time we expect plans for a new 75000 seat stadium with sliding roof, full central heating, red leather recliners, fillet steak baguettes and coffee for £1 at half time, and luxury travel for every supporter to his home address.
If you fail to deliver these most basic of facilities to us I really believe you should consider your position and resign. After all you don't seem to understand the huge shadow cast over us by our more illustrious neighbours. They have won all these trophies back in the days when footballs were made of leather and stands were made of wood. And what do we have eh? All we get to watch are international superstars every week in a stadium rocking to the rafters and it just isn't good enough.
So get your act together Mr Cortese 'cos we are not going to put up with this constant failure much longer.
PS Just kidding. Loved ya Nige. You deserved better. Hope your next club treats you a lot better.

Having said all that Gary Neville thought we were excellent in the first half - but then spoilt it by saying Everton never got started! He redeemed himself by saying we didn't let them.
Is that the best we have seen of Ramirez? Guly seemed to thrive in his role last night. Rickie was unlucky on at least 3 occassions - on another night he would have got a hat-trick!
But for some woeful finishing and the heroics of Boruc in the 2nd half it could have been very different.
As Slugger said in another thread - some player that Fellaini! He terrorised our defence in the air - and not many people out muscle Schneiderlin (who I thought ws immense again alongside Cork).
So with the new centre half, and Adam and Jose back fit - I think we will have more than enough to stay up! Wins at Wigan and Newcastle would be great - what about a point at United next week?
As for all the nonsense about protesting, it never happened. I must admit no mention of Nigel in the programme seems a bit odd - but I would imagine the new Manager will rectify that when he starts doing a piece. After all his current team is Nigel's legacy!
A few days off now for the team to take on MoPo's ways - by the way has Yoshida got better and better? He looks as solid as a rock to me - but sometimes his positional play leaves us a bit exposed - and he is very good a getting in the last gasp clearance. Only trouble is sometimes he puts us in more trouble than if he left it!”

I think that Confucious has said it all in respect of the dignity showed last night by the fans and the fact that we didnt react like a bunch of rabid dogs. It took the legs right out from under the press.
I wasn't surpised by the lack of programme notes on Adkins. What did you expect ? .. an apology from Cortese? He probably feels that we don't understand his thinking, and he probably isn't worried about that anyway. He believes he is raising the bar at the club by bringing in a more experienced international coach. Cortese wasn't going to wait for Adkins to fail, he wanted a different profile of manager, he found what he wanted so he made his mind up and did what he had to do. He is a hard business oriented man, he wants this club to be a truly big club, with European ambitions and I think he will achieve that. He is working for the Liebherrs and I think he will give them a club that is ultimately a regular top five challenger. We have it in our grasp to do this.
It felt shoddy though, and I am genuinely disappointed for Adkins. But football isn't a place for the nice men ... and it is all the poorer for that. Nigel is a decent man of great personal integrity and values - he will remain a legend in my view. You have my utmost respect Nigel and I wish you well wherever you go.. we haven't heard the nlst from the man I'm sure.
.. and so onwards we go ....

Should have won last night but if you keep drawing with teams in the top 10 and beat the ones around you we will progress. Cracking atmosphere last night and the media will be so dissapointed. I saw before leaving on SSN there main headline was about the protests planned for SMS. Well I certainly didn't see too many hankies there last night. What's done is done and we will go forward under the new manager. Tough game next away to United but it's get that regardless of the result we won't slip into bottom 3 then the big one away to Wigan. Yoshi seems to have grown in statue as he gets used to the premiership and I think the MP will get the best out of the 2 full backs , best 2 full backs in the league no doubt , spiderman and cork were tireless, I rate osman but they made him look very average, hat off to guly who along with puncheon covered some ground , first half Ramirez looked like the player we were expecting to get and on another day rickie could and probably should of scored at least twice .
Overall first half was probably as good as we have played all season team looked hungry. They are away in Barcelona at a training camp this week apparently so MP can start to shape things how he wants not expecting major changes maybe that we play a higher line as espanyol did. Will be interesting to see where he feels we need to strengthen and improve with the players we have or any incoming transfers .
It's time to move on thank you Nigel you will always be welcome back at St Marys and you will get an ovation fitting of one of our best ever managers but mr cortese a few lessons in how to do things the right way , a good man deserved more respect , not enough recognition of his achievements and instead of releasing a press statement have the balls to address the media face to face to explain your actions, we have lost face as a club .
It's one as fans we all love , we support through thick and thin and we appreciate you saving the club, we have much to thank you for.

Brazilliant, was it?
Of course, I would have loved a win, but, for me, what was most satisfying about last night was that most of the players who have been most under fire stepped up to the plate.
Guly had his best game for a year or more.
Ramirez offered options and, once he beefs up a bit, will get better and better.
Boruc finally looked like a goalkeeper.
Jay? I think last night showed why Nigel had started picking Guly ahead of him. He has time, but I do regret that he wasn't sent on loan rather than Sharp, who might not be the quickest but might just have proved a useful impact sub at this level.
Still, when Messi signs, Billy, Jay, and for that matter Guly, will struggle to get in the starting eleven.

Before I go, an appology. Last week, I told someone that the French chemical industry was in a dangerous mess and concluded by telling the guy where he could stick his chemical pollution.
Looks like he sent it to Sussex.
Bl00dy French, no sense of direction, I told him to aim about 40 miles west of that!

Well I can understand some of what Poch says (I live in Spain) but understood Nig better!
Agree with concerns over J Rod, he does not seem to have that extra special gift to make things happen. Un less Poch can work some magic?
Pity we didn't get a bit more luck in the 1st half last night. First 0-0 for 2 yrs at home.
RODRIGUEZ still has time to come good but with talk of MP's interest in a spanish striker in todays paper maybe Jay Rod's future might be elsewhereI think the last 0-0 was against NOTTS COUNTY which shows how far we had come under Nigel.Shame on Aunty Nicola for not giving him any space in last nights programme. It would have been nice to give Dean Wilkins and Andy Crosbie a mention too.Talking of the backroom staff i reckon that the new lot have a bit more savy about them but it would have been nice to get an english coach on board.somewhere along the line.

He is a centre forward and is having to play wide and only for part of games. Guly is just as bad when played down the middle and is happier wide.
Jay Rod has played well down the middle where we play Lambert.
Hope he stays focussed and can step up if Lambert is not available for games.

Whether this is sky just putting some coincidences together i do not know.
Biglia is on strike because he wants to play football in England and is Argentinian.
Verdu because his contract runs out in 6 months and he refuses to sign a new one and played under MP for Espanyol.
With the break we should have a full squad to face United. Forren should have had time to settle The manager to installing his play system which we saw in the first half.
But to be honest United are a cut above anyone in this league and it would be a hard ask to get any result, a win would do though lol.

I think he lacks a good first touch but shows a willingness to run for and with the ball. He looks a bit lightwieght in the challenge comparred to Lambert - but that's experience I guess.
Let's face it JRod has never come up against decent defenders has he? It's a very steep learning curve for him - but I say he is definitely one for the future.
Advice to JRod - more pies, more weight training, and a bit more agression and keep practicing keepie-uppie so his first touch improves.

Great start, now let's ensure that the baying idiots don't get what they want.

He is the last person who would want us to mope and complain. He got us here, Markus got us here and, ahem, Cortese got us here.

Pochettino will learn English a lot quicker if he watches our TV every night. If he watches Corrie and Eastenders he will realise there are two languages to learn. Plus the vocabulary he will pick up from the match day crowds.
Another good point is that the referee and linesman wont have a clue what he's talking about so he can scream abuse at them and they'll never know !! I bet Alex Ferguson wishes he could do that ...

Kent, sorry, Kitty - judging by your length of being a fan you must be about 60. Calling the actions of thousands of Saints fans a sham seems at odds with the age you claim to be. In fact the general tone doesn't seem quite right. Just doesn't add up.
So, in short, bye bye, see you when Cortese is gone. You are entitled to your opinion and, in terms of the reasoning of your argument, you are 100% right - the decision to sack Nigel was a disgrace.
Now I, along with other loyal Saints fans will get on with ensuring that the actions of one person do not destroy our belief or upward curve.

Nigel spent a record amount of money for a Southampton manager, with these buys ending up either shipped out(Sharp), missing (Lee) or warming the bench (most of them). Clyne, Yosh and Gaston were the only players to cement regular first team places. This demonstrates a lot of his buys have not worked out. I still don't understand what Nigel's vision or plan was.
The goalkeeper merry go round highlighted his indecisiveness, two of the three were purchased in the summer.Neither being able to claim the number 1 shirt!
The new chap comes in and straight away hints at wanting to play a more direct game, sth Nigel should have cottoned onto a long time ago.
Nigel served his purpose, with better resources than any other league club, he helped get us back to back promotions. If the club wanted to make it to the next level and secure ourselves not only as a Premiership club but as one which could challenge for a European place, Nigel had to go.
NC couldn't bankroll a manager he didn't see as taking Soton to the next level. That would be wasting more money!

I can beat you as I am a saint of 55 years. I did not like the sacking of Nigel, but then I read his last message posted in the dressing room, and this made me feel a lot better. What a farewell!
Let's remember Nigel as a top man and apparently the 3rd most successful Saints' manager in terms of his win percentage. And successive promotions is unique, I believe.
But, Kitty, he has gone. As others have said it is the team , THE SAINTS whom we support - always have and Kitty, it should always be.
So please get your season tickets out of the bin and be sure to be at St Mary's for the rest of the season and cheering the team as you should.
I was really thrilled watching the game last night and apart from the wonderful overall performance, I thought individually some were brilliant.
Probably the best I have seen Guly play, the defence looked almost like the old Berlin Wall. Surely our two young fullbacks are as good as anything around. Their determination, skill, speed and distribution was spectacular.
I kid myself we actually did win 1-0 - that's from the penalty that unbelievably we did not get. A very, very clear push. Stuff it!!

Nigel's sacking wasn't handled well, but some fans are making him out to be some sort of genius.
If we get to play in Europe, and that is exactly what Cortese's ambition is, could people really see Nigel coping? Would he attract the kind of players we need?
Few can deny he was already struggling and his tactical prowess or lack of it was evident.
Cortese obviously thinks he couldn't be afforded the time and doesn't want our journey derailed.
Risk? Maybe ... only time will tell.
As I don't know what has gone on behind the scenes regarding the Nigel affair, it is not my place to pass judgement.
I do know however that it is NC who has guided us to our present status, we wouldn't be talking about PL football without him, and so I back him.
It is not for us to judge him. Time will do that for us.

Firstly, the word is not translator. When it is spoken, it is an INTERPRETER. Translators write, interpreters speak!
Secondly, I would like to hear what he said exactly in Spanish. I notice that the word "kindness" is often used, but that doesn't have the right connotation.

Also, although Ramirez done some good things last night, he does frustrate me when he keep trying to take players on rather than look to make the pass, as he invariably loses the ball and ends up on his backside waving his arms in the air, particularly when he broke out of defence and out numbered them in the last ten minutes, but decided to try and get through their to central defenders rather than passing out wide.

Even at the beginning the fans wanted to clap him but weren't sure if that was the right thing to do.
He said the right things, conducted himself in a dignified manner, and reminds me of a less arrogant version of AVB.
If the team continues to play like last night I can't see him doing anything but winning the fans over. He clearly just wants to do well for us and cannot be blamed for taking the job.
So looking forward to the QPR game, but for so many reasons that one could define our season and decide if the new regime will be in for a tough ride or not.

I've heard the manager can communicate fine with players, obviously you weren't watching last night, but he was on the edge of his dugout shouting orders for most of the match. To use a foreign language infront of cameras and with more technical language is a different scenario. Also, the new no.2 is english-speaking.

I have kept my powder dry on the management position as I didnt want to just voice a reflex reaction.
I hope we don't lose the soul of the club along the way. But maybe that's big league football now.

Nigel's sacking wasn't handled well, but some fans are making him out to be some sort of genius.

Some fans need to understand, we're not dealing with uncle Guy Askham & the seven dwarfs here. We're are dealing with a lawyer with a business background and "the family", who know a thing or two about success and are billionaires to boot. The big brother popularity contest, vote at home now, isn't going to fly with these cats. NC is a wiley fox, he will have the good sense to ignore the X factor voters.
The sooner those fans wake up to the fact that we are going places & this isn't the tyro league meets Pop Idol, the better!
But the higher up we get the more of a buzz Nicola will get out of this. I can't imagine he needs the money, so for him it's about the challenge of building something truly epic.
I could be wrong, of course. Who really knows?

It is not for us to judge him. Time will do that for us.

All the investment is part of a long term plan to add value to the Club...see us to another level and cash in when the timing is right.
As fans, we can only enjoy the ride... we will go places with the Don at the helm. What happens after is anyones guess. What is almost certain...is that we won't be following the Poopey model.

St Retford wrote:I do tend to agree with MGRA (although I don't tend to believe sale is planned quite so soon).
MGRA wrote:I don't think the numbers really add up for that. He's spent (I'm guessing here) £20m buying the club out of admin and another £40m on players and, say, £10m on the academy. Even if he sells us next year as a Premier League club he wouldn't get £70m for us.
St Retford wrote:he has no choice when to cash-in. He will advise the estate of the Liebherrs at the right time and if they agree they will get a stupendous return on the initial investment and he will get a monumental bonus for his services. He can't recommend this until the sky money jackpot is secured. Once it is, he will work feverishly to line up buyers well in advance of any sale. Only a fool would cash in now with the club worth a fraction of what it will be worth once the second Premier season is secured. He ain't no fool, he also isn't in this for the football, he is purely in it for the money. I don't necessarily agree with Matt and the ego-thing by the way..
MGRA wrote:How does this help him do that, exactly? Surely if he was going to cash in he'd do it now, rather than spending millions replacing the manager and millions more on the players that the new guy will be able to bring in?

Nigel's sacking wasn't handled well, but some fans are making him out to be some sort of genius.

I think that it's important to NC and the family to see through the vision that Markus had, maybe I'm being naive, but I take them at face value.

e. But lets not get misty eyed about NC. He is a calculated banker with not a shred of tactile emotion in his body so when its time to sell, he will flag it up and they will be off into the sunset. Hopefully leaving Saints much much the better for it after years of re-building.

yes but that will be Asset-billionaires. And the only reason they are is because of investments, profits from business revenue and historic asset worth. Markus clearly enjoyed his adventure into football and coupled with the non-brainer on the financial front for his it was business-and-pleasur

Nigel's team played superbly in the first half until a half-time team talk from Maurice.
