Adkins airbrushed out of Saints programme (From Daily Echo)

There needs to be an improvement in club community relations and PR...

SFC week after week show off the best fans especially away. Club advancement in all area has been excellent... It is just the manner of things that lets the club down and and annoys fans from the long running media relations fued to the Macdonalds uniformed programme seller issue fans express displeasure, not in the intent but in the manner of execution of the projects. Southampton fans have always been passionate but are also compassionate and perhaps that has been forgotten. We all enjoyed and worshipped Nigel Adkins effort in getting us back to back promotions. We are sgrateful to The Chairman for making it happen and want to adore him and acknowledge his input and leadership but how can we when fans are excluded from expressing their feelings.

We all enjoyed Nicola's first fan forum two years or so ago. Fans would love to have had a chance to thank Nigel and don't believe he should have been unceremoniously dumped.

The Fans have shown that unlike self destructive negative plastic Chelsea fans Saints fans across the globe will support the players and the moves to improve the the team and acknowledge the results driven effort of Nicola Cortese and his epic legendary 5 year plan to the top.

BUT.... there surely has to be a time to reflect and show a little compassion and gratitude to the servants of the club that helped us on the way.

Please Nicola - Fan Forum and a little healing. It is not in anyway a weakness.

PS In no way are the comments of many media pundits including MLTs laughing stock accusation done one bit of good - pot kettle black as far as they are concerned.

Jordan Sibley is the PR man. He really does need to do his job and advice his boss on better presentation. Cortese is going to make his decisions, that's his job as CEO, Sibley has to package them better. It really isn't that difficult!

All credit to the players last night after what must have been a massive shock for them. They really did give 100%. I see that excuses are already being made for Cortese in that he just needs better advice from his PR man when anyone with decent morals would have handled the situation with dignity and compassion. I support the Saints but will not be disappointed when the day comes for the axe to be wielded on our current Chairman. He demonstrates poor leadership qualities.

To not even acknowledge the work that Adkins had done is a new low from him and the club.
I don't like the guy and never have or never will.
More and more do I feel like the club doesn't care about the fans at all.
I was in hospitality last night and the price of things is just ludicrous.
I mean who charges £3 for a pathetic cup of hot chocolate that my gf had to wait 10 min to get.
Oh yes that would be my club that is now run by a ruthless,arrogant buffoon that is slowly pushing me and others further away from actually feeling like its not our club anymore.

I agree that NA should have had some acknowledgement in the programme last night but the decison has been made and thats life. We need to move on and no matter how harsh it is NA is now in the past.

Funny that my £3 hot chocolate came with a chocolate bar included. You got a choice pay it or not - stop moaning and support the Saints.

This website is as anti-Cortese as the club is pro-Cortese and never the twain shall meet!

We just have to get on with supporting the club, watched last night on TV but the noise from Saints fans was clear to hear, that's all we can do, that is our job!

I stopped posting on here quite a while ago because I think the Echo is divisive and anti SFC. I was and am very sad to see Nigel go but I am also more sure than ever my opinion of the paper I grew up with but learned to mistrust is still just as anti SFC. Maybe in a few years after the new manager has done well and leaves the Echo will be out with the knives again. Good luck Mauricio and Nigel. COYR!

look - the thing is done. It wasn't very nice, we don't know why. But it's his club to run. If you can't live with it then you have a choice.

I'm a Saints fan. I do not like what has happened but I have to go along with it because I want my team to stay in the Premiership. Continued protest will only have an adverse effect on the team on the pitch.
As for this article, I'm sorry what did you expect? a fourteen part eulogy of Nigel Adkins? choirs singing his praises to the rafters of St Mary's?

I think the players did very well first half last night, really bad about the lack of any thanks for Adkins services, not the Saints way! We all thank Markus and his family for the work they have done, the financial investment made and for saving the club, I also want to appreciate the work Cortese has done, however there is a degree of a dictatorial style in his management and that does not sit very well with me! A bit of humanity sometimes goes along way and it's not a good idea to alienate everyone.

New Senior Sports Editor, same old anti-NC slant.

We dealt with the 'NC didn't handle this very well' stuff last week, then we played a football match and moved on (exept the DE and 3-halves-Kent).

To put this into my personal perspective, for 5 years I did a great job for a charity in London. However, I fell out with my boss and she manipulated things through which she created a new part-time post over my head, taking away all my interesting work and thus, effectively taking away my job. So, I left before I was pushed.

Like Nigel, there was a degree of outrage at my treatment, but no nice words in any publication, just the usual leaving pressy and the charity moved on. It still rankles, but I never expected others to rally behind me, wave hankies for me or stop supporting that charity in protest.

One difference - unlike Nigel, when I left, I didn't get a fat handshake.

Thanks Nigel. Two seasons - two promtions? No one at SFC will ever better that. You're a legend.

Now time to move on methinks.

Nigels efforts will never be wiped from the history book too many people were there to witness it. Regardless of whether I am happy with the decision or not I am a supporter of Southampton FC that was still the same under any manager that has taken charge of this club and likewise any chairman/owner in charge of this club. Too many people are having knee jerk reactions to this and could end up gutted if this decision pays off. Likewise I am fully aware it could work the other way aswell

Why can't we? I mentioned Lyon the other day, went from the French 2nd division to become a French power-house, with little footballing history and no large cash injection, why can't we do the same? We just outplayed a team that's 5th in the table, outplayed arsenal and could have got results against both Manchester teams, so we have the potential to get up there.

Bankers are notorious for not needing PR. NC sees the club as figures on a balance sheet. Its as simple as that. We will be sold towards the end of or at the end of next season if we are still in the Prem, the Leibherrs will make a forture, NC will get the biggest bonus of his life and the new owner(s) will hopefully be able to keep the momentum and maintain their investment.... Football is about many things for many people, but for the current head honcho is only the 0s that matter. Ironically this will mean the club should be heading in the direction of security and it will actually be good for the medium term at least. Its just that along the way integrity, honour and simple good manners have been ejected from the club is an almost sociapathic fashion. He ain't no Saint, but he is looking like cementing the clubs future along with cementing a nice little personal fortune further up the line. Most people would have taken the position we are in a week before they bough in. Its not ideal, but few things are. I am philosophical, I am glad NC is still at the helm, I dislike many things he does but still see the bigger picture and accept the transition.

PR and club relations are seriously underperforming.

Great game last night. Very wierd reading the captains comments. It felt divirced from reality.

Saw an interview today with MP (and he gives credit where it is due to his predecessor (Adkins not Atkins as some fans forever vocally outraged by his sacking seem to call him)

Sorry gaz but I didn't agree with your post either, for different reasons from osprey though.

Writer should change the opening paragraph to:

IF you were hoping to read a simple, unbiased, fair assessment of last night’s game, you would be disappointed.

In one way, the article is newsworthy I guess. Removing Nigel isn't a nice thing to do, but where do you draw the line?

You could say it is far more honest for Cortese to say nothing than heap praise on a guy he's just thrown over the side unfairly.

As the Echo would know, changing an entire programme with a day's notice before printing probably wasn't an easy task for the team who create it and, judging by NC's communication, I honestly 100% doubt that they had any prior warning of what was happening - I'm sure the match programme was the last thing on NC's list of importance.

Up the Saints. Nigel will get a fantastic job and do brilliantly, but I hope we will too.

Concentrate on the football.

Stroppy_gramps, I think you'll find it's only the players that need to concentrate on the football.

The remainder of us need to concentrate on supporting the club and that's pretty darn difficult when it's being run by someone that doesn't recognise or respect the staff it employs, the people who support it or the foundation stones it has been built upon.

I spoke to a member of security at the ground last night. He told me the following. Last Friday Lallana was summonsed by NC to attend his office at 9.00 am. When he arrived NC was there along with the new manager and Fonte, the latter being there to translate. NC told him that he was just about to sack NA and introduced him to the new manager.

Meanwhile security were told to pack into boxes all the personal effects of NA, Wilkins, Crosby and Stannard. These were to be delivered to them on the strict instructions that none of that quartet were allowed to enter the training ground. It was described as awful!

A member of staff took a photo of the message NA had left for the players. Obviously he knew what was going to happen. That member of staff, an a sports analyst has been suspended and faces the sack!!!!!

Another interesting piece of information I was given is that NC has been a personal friend of someone for a long time. That person GULY!!!!!! I was informed that NA was playing Guly at NC's insistence. Apparently Alan Pardew's failure to pay Guly contributed to his demise!!!!

If the latter is accurate, I've no reason to believe its not, then it confirms my suspicion that NC has been heavily influential in team selection? Will that continue?

On a more positive note I attended the game last night. I was very impressed with the fans who were respectful and supportive of the new managerial team.

The team played very well IMO. They all put in a good shift. It was a shame they didn't score. I've been critical of these players in the past but I have to say last night they were a pleasure to watch and I include both Guly and Lambert in that!!!!

I have a feeling that NC appointment of the new management team, leaving aside how it was done, will turn out to be inspirational. I hope I'm right.

The new manager has an air about him - an aura he is mouriniho like and I was impressed with his actions and coaching from the technical area.

I for one am excited at this new dawn over St.Marys I have a feeling it will bring success. I really hope it does.

NA was a giant amongst men. I won't forget him, I doubt many fans will. He has moved on. I wish him well. The club now. Needs to move on and I'm confident it will - in the right direction!

If the latter is accurate, I've no reason to believe its not, then it confirms my suspicion that NC has been heavily influential in team selection? Will that continue?

On a more positive note I attended the game last night. I was very impressed with the fans who were respectful and supportive of the new managerial team.

The team played very well IMO. They all put in a good shift. It was a shame they didn't score. I've been critical of these players in the past but I have to say last night they were a pleasure to watch and I include both Guly and Lambert in that!!!!

I have a feeling that NC appointment of the new management team, leaving aside how it was done, will turn out to be inspirational. I hope I'm right.

The new manager has an air about him - an aura he is mouriniho like and I was impressed with his actions and coaching from the technical area.

I for one am excited at this new dawn over St.Marys I have a feeling it will bring success. I really hope it does.

I'd have no hesitation sacking the sports analyst! If the guy is that daft he shouldn't be employed at SFC!

Just to balance out a bit of what I have been saying, I don't like the fact that there was nothing in the Match programme about Nigels departure, the minimum mesage should have been a thank you, better still would have been an explanation. I don't appreciate fans being banned from expressing their views, freedom of speech is taking a severe battering here. The childish threats about people waving posters is also bang out of order, I think there are some in the Club hierarchy that should look at themselves and ask why they are bowing down to the current hysteria about what we would be doing. We proved by our behaviour that we are above all of that. So in future they should show a bit more respect for the fan base, we are the life blood of the Club, to alienate us would be the death knell of the Club and can easily be cured by just a little more communication. Talk to us, tell us what is going on and why, you never know we might actually have the answers to any problems that you can't solve. Wake up Nicola and smell the coffee, we want to be onside with you, but you are making it virtually impossible. Rant over.

I am a saints fan and have been since I was born in '72, my dad was a saints fan and his dad before him and so on, I am used to saints being in the top league until recently when our club faced relegation and administration this was probably the lowest time in my life as a supporter of my home club. Luckily we were saved by one Markus Liehberr a billionaire swiss businessman no less, along with his team and right-hand man NC. The repair began and we were soon back in the top flight again, very stable and finacially sound. I am a saints fan, so I am used to being just up there, mid-table, getting by, fighting to survive, battling relegation, coming 2nd...hold on why should I not won't something more? why can't SFC be a top european side? why must I just be happy with the memories of '76?
This could be it, SFC's chance to not just be good but be great...I'm happy to roll with it, whatever happens behind the scenes, I am a football fan and I want my club to suceed and I wan't to see great football, the rest is gravy...!

That statement contradicts itself, I don't want to be seen as sucking up any way, but I do want some of that dream, and unless you secure someone else of equal financial stature to buy us out, I will stand by him until it is clear that we aren't going to get it. Have you studied Barcelonas results lately? Played 20 won 18, drew 1, lost 1. Not bad, wouldn't you like us to do that in a couple of years when the dust has settled, or are you another with no ambition, no belief and no hope?

I don't see why Cortese feels the need to be such an uncompassionate jerk at every given moment. I hated the decision to sack Adkins and hope I will turn out wrong when I say it will backfire. However I still back Cortese because I believe he is the major reason why SFC are riding so high. But the way he goes about things serves only to leave an ill taste and for no apparent gain. What would be the down side to thanking Adkins in the programme? It is our football club you are running Cortese and we all think Nigel deserves some respect as we move on without him.

I spoke to a taxi driver the other day that once had a Saints player in the back of his cab and he said that if you say make enough statements about insider going ons that sooner or later one of them will turn out to be true and you can then turn around smugly and say "told you so". Or I might have made that up. I'll be taking a flask, but not because of the prices! Q'd the whole of half time for a coffee & gave up when 2nd half started - Nicola "Rupert" Cortese's improvements haven't reached the catering arrangements yet!!!

My mate cornered Roops at one of the late lamented fans forums, and it's thanks to him you've been able to enjoy Tommy K in the 'service concourse'-see, it is worth complaining!

adkins was thanked in the initial press release,so how many times do you want Cortese to thank him??Liebherr and Cortese have the same vision as we would all like-that of being a top 6 side,and NC decided that NA was not the man to take us forward.Given his tactical ineptness, the 30m spend in the summer,(3 times what west ham spent), failing to hold on to a lead to the tune of 19 or so points,I think he has been very patient with a man who was obviously out of his depth.Sure,he got us 2 promotions (with masses of spending power comapred to rivals) but I am sure NC has yet again made the right decision. Without him putting Liebherr on to us,we wouldnt have a club!

Once again, I have to point out that Adkins similarly gave Pardew no crediit for what he'd achieved either.
