Ex-Barcelona midfielder Verdu linked to Southampton
9:49am Tuesday 22nd January 2013 in Sport
Pochettino
Saints have been linked with a move for one of Mauricio Pochettino’s former Espanyol stars.
Midfielder Joan Verdu, 29, was signed by the new Saints manager from Barcelona in the summer of 2009.
His current contract expires this summer.
Pochettino has also been linked with Anderlecht striker Lucas Biglia.
The Argentine, who has been on strike at his club after trying to engineer a move, has only scored three goals in 27 Belgian League and Champion League games this season.

Joan Verdu? Well, it's a while since we had a female in the team, since Marian Pahars in fact!

'Joan' incidently is John in Catalan.

1) Get your facts right before you start posting items.
2) STOP using copy and paste from other sites
3) START ACTING LIKE YOU SUPPORT THE SAINTS! (you may not like the chairman but some of the poor reporting on here sounds like your a Skate paper)
If I was in charge of the DE, half the people would be sacked and replaced with local Saints supporting kids!

Verdu is a quality player and would fit in nicely alongside Gaston, I reckon. Offers a touch more dynamism than Schneiderlin who, although a good footballer, isn't exactly terrifying going forward.

Lucas Biglia is a defensive midfielder, not a striker. Come on Echo.
On the football pitch though, he is indeed a defensive midfielder.

Sebastian Fernandez from Malaga is being touted as well, looks like we are finally going to get some quality, just hope we can offload all the nuggets that Adkins signed.

Apart from Nathaniel Clyne and Maya, few stand out as worth the money. Gaston was almost probably an NC signing. But Fox, Rodriques, Guly, Sharp, Davis etc that cost money have yet to show their worth.
I agree that we should be able to pick up some excellent players from the Iberian contacts that MC has, and the language barrier would not be an issue for the coaches, but might be for SRL et al!

Didn't I read that Pochettino said he's not even had time to consider signings so I wonder where the Echo have dug this up from. I wish there was more focus on facts rather than idle gossip

Schneiderlin has the best tackle and interception stats in Europes top 5 divisions at 165.
His role of breaking up the opposing teams play is probably the most vital and he is proving to be one of the stars of our team!

I don't think we need players like Verdu; we already have two in Gaston and AL. We should get an out and out winger - someone to stay out wide, get behind defences, and get crosses in. We try and play too much through defences instead of getting behind. RL would thrive on someone like that.

Don't start an argument when all I'm saying is we need more options going forward when players get tired or if we're trailing. Schneiderlin and Cork are good ball players but some extra attacking options would be nice when Ramirez and Lambert run out of steam/get injured. Whenever they don't play and with Lallana injured we don't have a lot on the bench do we?

billythesaint wrote:one more thing, Cork has no assists. So, despite having 2 great centre midfielders they have one assist between them. At 1-0 down with 10 minutes to go taking one of them off and sticking Verdu on wouldn't be the worst idea ever would it, Kermit.
pokersaint76 wrote:Gobbycunt, read the post. He's a good footballer but not terrifying going forward. This bloke would add a more attacking option and we've got Cork as defensive cover. How many assists has Schneiderlin had despite being a great passer? Sometimes we need to go at teams more if we're chasing the game and this bloke would be ideal. You're trying to start an argument without even thinking.

Expect the constant jeckel & hyde style reporting to continue..
Sometimes reports are full of praise....then the next minute it's doom and gloom with a bitter below the belt dig at NC....which I find immature.
Perhaps it's because they don't believe the fantastic exciting vision....which is a lost opportunity..

All our good talent since (Shaw, Lallana) have been retained. So far. As for reports SRL leaving. Anything is possible in football, especially given NA's sacking, but why offload your top scorer and current captain at such an important stage of the season? Not Likely.
upwherewebelong--- same problem as Nigel and his predecessors suffered when big clubs, Arsenal in particular, came in for Saints youngsters, Theo and Oxo, yet he managed back to back promotions and 15th in the toughest league in the World when he was sacked!

Hence why things went tits up for MP.
Just get behind the club now, the past is the past- i love NA and always will for what he did for our club, but it's time to get on with supporting the best team on the South Coast- FACT.

Think your post has been misunderstood but with no "tone of voice" in posts it's easily done. Now we've bought a decent centre back we can be a bit more dynamic in the middle of the pitch if needed and hook off Cork or Spider towards the end to add a more attacking threat if losing.
