i think the bass for looking further afield is that decent English players are over priced, and over paid and few and far between.
Abroad the leagues like the Italian and Spanish are struggling financially open to offload their decent players, often have technically superior players (world/european champions) and Mau has more knowledge of these players and can attract them.

There was a published interview with Sid Little a while ago and he made it absolutely clear that he was in charge of transfers, it's out there somewhere if you google it. If the club was struggling to attract players and brought MP in for that it begs the question why Sid doesn't get the chop.
