Eastleigh's hard work goes to waste

Daily Echo: Richard Hill Richard Hill

EASTLEIGH boss Richard Hill couldn’t hide his disappointment after last night’s game against Truro City was called off less than four hours before kick-off because the Cornish side were unable to get to the ground.

Truro informed the Spitfires that they couldn’t complete the journey for safety reasons after the team coach had been caught in a blizzard on the A38.

It came as a bitter blow to Eastleigh who had worked round the clock to ensure the Blue Square Bet South fixture went ahead.

A band of supporters and club employees, including Hill, were at the ground until 10pm on Monday clearing snow off the pitch. And they all returned at 9am yesterday to complete the job.

“It’s disappointing and frustrating because of all the hard work that went into getting the game on," said Hill.

"I’d like to thank everyone who came and helped clear snow off the pitch. It was a hard job and a lot of man hours went into it.

“Not only that, we’ve only played twice at home since the FA Trophy tie in November and, immaterial of what people believe this club have got, finances are tight and we need home games.”

With all last night’s other fixtures postponed, a positive result for Eastleigh over bottom club Truro would have done wonders for their league position.

Currently third to bottom, the Spitfires would have leapt up to 11th had they successfully followed up the 5-0 battering of Billericay two weeks ago.

“We don’t know if we’d have won but, if we had, the players, everyone, would be feeling great, but that opportunity was taken away from us,” said Hill.

Eastleigh have another home game this Saturday against Farnborough (3pm).

*Sholing’s Hampshire Senior Cup quarter-final at Havant & Waterlooville, postponed last night, has been rearranged for this evening at Westleigh Park (7.45).

Have to feel for all the folk who helped out at the club to get this game on.
It has been raised on the EFC forum, but i notice at the end of this article that H&W were able to postpone their Hant Cup game with Sholing by 24 hours. Can that be done BSS level?
