Saints could switch transfer target as Coutinho deal cools
9:40am Saturday 26th January 2013 in Sport
Philippe Coutinho
Inter Milan are trying to rush through a deal with Liverpool for Philippe Coutinho as reports link them with another Brazilian in the shape of Roberto Firmino.
Reports in Italy say that Inter are keen to get a quick deal done for Coutinho and are pushing for it to happen by the end of the weekend.
Inter are trying to hurry through a deal for Coutinho, with Liverpool still looking his most likely destination.
The Italian giants are desperate to sign 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder Paulinho from Corinthians before the transfer window shuts on Thursday.
Due to the obviously tricky logistics of an Italian club recruiting a player from Brazil, they need to ensure they can get on with the deal as soon as possible.
They need to sell in order to buy and the sales of Wesley Sneijder, who has sealed an £8.4m move to Galatasary, and Coutinho would fund the €15m move for Paulinho and leave a bit of change left over.
Saints are the only club to get close to Inter’s asking price for Coutinho, as they were reportedly prepared to pay £10.2m for his services.
Liverpool though remain confident of landing the player because they believe Coutinho would prefer a move to Merseyside.
However, reports say that Saints are now eyeing a possible £8.5m swoop for Hoffenheim’s Brazilian midfielder Firmino.

I reckon LFC are playing on the fact that Inter need the money to buy another Brazilian geezer, and Coutinho has also expressed a preference to go to LFC - LFC have another Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva..
So they aren't upping their offer, though I think they are restructuring it to pay more up front, but refuse to go higher..
If we sign Coutinho I'd be surprised. Pleasantly mind you.

Liverpool are confident that negotiations will reach a successful conclusion with Inter Milan over the weekend so they can complete a deal for midfielder Philippe Coutinho.
Talks have continued since the Reds’ improved offer of 9m euros (£7.6m) was turned down on Thursday.
Southampton are willing to pay 12m euros (£10m) for Coutinho but the Brazil international has made it clear he wants to move to Anfield.
The player is hoping a compromise can be reached with Liverpool, who are prepared to walk away if talks drag on into next week.

What I don't think you realise is - Us Saints fans don't mind that much. He's a great little player and if he wants to go up there and sit on the bench then more fool him. If he comes to St Mary's we'll give him a great welcome (as the Liverpool fans would) and do our best to make him feel supported (as you lot would too)
It's not that big a deal for us since we've got a great strike package, Countinho would just support that for us. we can live with not getting him.
Your main concern should be Saints coming up the table in the seasons to come. Barring an utter disaster we're going to stay up since all the teams around us appear to be imploding at a great rate - Dirty 'Arry isn't going to save QPR, Newcastle are.... well god knows what Pards is doing up there, Villa..... yes well.... Villa. And Fulham arent firing on all cylinders. Reading appear to be getting some results recently but they have a long way to go before safety.
all we need to do is grind out draws against the better sides and make sure we win against the teams around us. We did it to Everton and Chelsea, we can do it to Man U next week.
But if the rumours are true and you have signed Coutinho - thats great for you and honestly, we all wish you well. I just think he's giving up guaranteed game time by going to Liverpool

Buttner: Terms agreed with Saints, then a-GREED with United at 11th hour
Michu: Heavily linked with Saints well before anyone else (we missed a trick there)
Gaston: Beat Spurs and Liverpool to his signature
Clyne: All the "big" clubs courting him...chose Saints
Forren: On trial at Liverpool, targeted by Everton, 11th hour signing for Saints
All this points to highly successful scouting network, a confident chairman and a massive leap in our profile that in the transfer market we are competing with (and beating!) the "big" clubs. Brendan Rodgers must be hating us right now, but I'd say our upward curve has crossed over Liverpools downward spiral and we are now a more enticing prospect to potential signings. After decades (90s & 00s) of selling off the family jewels, scraping the bargain basement, signing has-beens and obscure foreigners we are now entering a phase, more like the early 80s, of a high-profile, high-ambition football club. Very exciting indeed
Combine all this with the best youth academy in the land and a fantasic training system and facilites (Rickie. Spider, Cork, Fonte all converted from good League One players into excellent Premier League players) and I would say THE FUTURE'S BRIGHT...THE FUTURE'S RED AND WHITE (PINSTRIPES)
