9:40pm

SAINTS SUBSTITUTION (78): Fox off, Shaw on.

9:38pm

CHANCE (77): David De Gea is at full stretch to save a Rickie Lambert free-kick from 20 yards.

9:35pm

CHANCE (75): Robin van Persie heads in Wayne Rooney's cross, but the goal is chalked off for an offside against the Dutchman. Replays suggested it was very tight.

9:33pm

MANCHESTER UNITED SUBSTITUTION (73): Kagawa off, Nani on.

9:29pm

MANCHESTER UNITED SUBSTITUTION (68): Anderson off, Rafael on.

9:24pm

9:06pm

SAINTS SUBSTITUTION: Double change at half-time for Saints, as Gaston Ramirez and Jason Puncheon come off to be replaced by Adam Lallana and Steven Davis.

8:48pm

MANCHESTER UNITED 2 SAINTS 1

8:47pm

Morgan Schneiderlin (45) - for kicking the ball away.

8:42pm

CHANCE (40): Danny Welbeck cuts past Maya Yoshida inside the Saints area, but his low shot is saved by the legs of Artur Boruc.

8:30pm

MANCHESTER UNITED 2 SAINTS 1 (Rooney 27): Robin van Persie whips in a free-kick to the back post, which Patrice Evra heads back across goal to an unmarked Rooney, who taps home from about two yards out.

8:27pm

CHANCE (22): Robin van Persie hits a left-foot shot from just outside the area. Artur Boruc looked to have it covered comfortably, but the ball deflected off Maya Yoshida and spun just over the bar.

8:10pm

MANCHESTER UNITED 1 SAINTS 1 (Wayne Rooney 8): United level the game quickly as Shinji Kagawa's pass puts Wayne Rooney through. The forward slots the ball past Artur Boruc.

8:06pm

MANCHESTER UNITED 0 SAINTS 1 (Jay Rodriguez 3): A shock lead for Saints, as Jay Rodriguez races in to pounce on Michael Carrick's poor backpass. It's a howler from David De Gea too, who really should have cleared, but Rodriguez pokes the ball past him and slots in.

8:00pm

Referee Lee Mason gets the match underway.

7:56pm

The teams are out here at Old Trafford. Kick-off just a few moments away. We will have updates here for you throughout the match.

7:30pm

Here is new Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino speaking to the media ahead of tonight's match:

7:29pm

The big surprise in the Saints line-up is that Luke Shaw drops to the bench and is replaced by Danny Fox. Adam Lallana returns from injury to make the bench, having been out since early December. For Manchester United, the Premier League's top scorer, Robin van Persie, is restored to the line-up, while Nemanja Vidic returns in the centre of defence.

7:27pm

THE LINE-UPS

SAINTS: Boruc; Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Fox; Cork, Schneiderlin; Puncheon, Ramirez, Rodriguez; Lambert.

Subs: K Davis, Richardson, Shaw, S Davis, Chaplow, Lallana, Lee.

MANCHESTER UNITED: De Gea, Jones, Smalling, Vidic, Evra, Anderson Carrick, Welbeck, Rooney, Kagawa, Van Persie.

Subs: Lindegaard, Rafael, Ferdinand, Buttner, Valencia, Nani, Cleverley.

REFEREE: Lee Mason

6:27pm

6:25pm

Mauricio Pochettino has taken his team away to Barcelona so this match really represents his first proper team selcetion.

Guly do Prado is ruled out with a knee injury which opens the way for a possible return for Adam Lallana.

The Saints skipper has been out since December 8.

In that time there have been eight games in which Saints have won one, lost two and drawn the other five.

6:22pm

Welcome to the Daily Echo's live coverage of Saints' trip to face Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Saints are lookinbg for their first league victory at the home of the Premier League leaders since 1988.

Him and Guly? Barcelona must have been tough.

Reminds me when Pardew brought them back from Switzerland and Richardson had dislocated his shoulder and Lallana was not fit!!

I think Luke stayed up too late playing Minefield or whatever game he was going on about on Twitter.

No Shaw is fit hence why he's on the bench. Surprised JWP doesn't feature tonight considering he played the whole game against United at the beginning of the season and did really well. Chaplow surprises me. Interesting how a change of management changes things. As someone once said it's a game of opinions. I'd like to see JWP and Shaw go out on loan now. They're are both talented players but will not progress if they are ignored or relegated to the bench!!!!

Is it fair to say this may be tactical as Pochy likes to press from the start and play a high tempo and at 17 Shaw may not be able to sustain that for 90 minutes and fox can?

Shaw on the bench is the big surprise for me.
He does usually suffer a little towards the end of a game. Perhaps he's being saved for "Fergie time" towards the end.

It's a strange one. I can't see the logic in it myself. Fox has a wicked delivery with that left foot but Shaw is a much better all round player.

He is just a bit tired. Rather than a strict fitness regime, MP should maybe enforce a strict bedtime regime.

Good old fashioned values eeh by gum.

He will be alright come Fergie Time.

I just hope Foxy has taken notice of the dreaded bright yellow hash marks on match of the day and sorts it out!

No I think that highly unlikely. There has to be a football reason or does MP rate Fox more than Shaw in what he's seen in Barcelona. Chaplow played what 3 games under Adkins he's now featured in both games under MP.

No I think that highly unlikely. There has to be a football reason or does MP rate Fox more than Shaw in what he's seen in Barcelona. Chaplow played what 3 games under Adkins he's now featured in both games under MP.
I hope you're right mate. Brilliant player. Can't understand this at all. Luke did tweet that he was having an afternoon nap earlier. Maybe just tired?

No Shaw is fit hence why he's on the bench. Surprised JWP doesn't feature tonight considering he played the whole game against United at the beginning of the season and did really well. Chaplow surprises me. Interesting how a change of management changes things. As someone once said it's a game of opinions. I'd like to see JWP and Shaw go out on loan now. They're are both talented players but will not progress if they are ignored or relegated to the bench!!!!
arseoul you are a total knob why should Shaw be loaned out???? obviously you have not see his last 15 games ............its dickslike you that keep genuine Saints fans off forums like this just FOAD!!!!
The point I'm making is if these lads aren't going to play under MP they will no doubt want to play elsewhere. I don't particularly want either lads out on loan! I've said Shaw is a talent why do you have to be so offensive? Calm down.

I do like Chaplow and I have the impression Pochie does to. He is very disciplined and what he lacks in skill he surely makes up defensively.

@Woohaha1 Well I don't really read any of the forums anymore and negative is a subjective concept anyway - it depends on personal POV.

Kind of settles it I guess.

I'm not saying he's the best in the world but give the guy a chance. Fonte and Hoover have stepped up a gear and if he wants to be a Prem. player tonite is the nite to show the new manager that he can too.

Calm down.
Saintsstevie I've not seen posts from you before but having re read yours I'm sorry to tell someone to go and die is wholly unacceptable. As a matter of courtesy I can tell you Ive reported you

Hopefully u will be pleasantly surprised tonite. Fox took huge stick earlier in the season when he was getting absolutely zero cover. With Spider and Cork playing so well he won't be as isolated. I'm not saying he's the best in the world but give the guy a chance. Fonte and Hoover have stepped up a gear and if he wants to be a Prem. player tonite is the nite to show the new manager that he can too.
Your right clever, I will be keeping everything crossed for a positive result :)
Well let's face it it's not very likely. But then neither were the draws against Chelski and the ARS.

Just a bit of "banter".

oh I know like I said ......its envy and jealousy but from a little club from the coast just seems strange. Can't be worse than First Row Sport unless you like a bit of naughtiness over your game. I am a believer in the two should not be mixed.

Worse still I downloaded something I believed would help and it didn't.

A thorough scan is in order.

The Manc were lucky not to concede in the second half.. a draw would have been fair.... Saints Fans absolutely bossed ole Troughud! COYY.

That is how a team should be promoted!!!!!

We played awesome. Who cares about the result.

As Seed said, this was about the glamour of being in the premier league. No damage to the old goal difference. Could easily have equalized.

According to Mark Lawrenson he cannot remember MU playing so badly. It really sticks in his throat to admit Saints played well and on balance of play should have had a least a point. Still that is the sign of true champions - not be allowed to play your natural game and still win.

First impressions of MP tactics... 3/10

Puncheon plays with Clyne on the RIGHT (maybe Spanish translation required)

J-Rod... Scored the goal but is, by far, our worst player. This guy is like playing with 10 men! Gives the free kick away leading to their second goal... He has had enough chances! Why didn't we keep Billy instead?!

Forren not even on the bench... although thought Maya and Hoover wasn't too bad.

Fox did ok... But Shaw is class, why no start for him?

Different game with Lallana... Deserved to start but understandable. Was Gaston injured? Didn't play very well.

So not impressed if this is the "next level" He said he had been learning about the team for weeks... Looked like days to me.

Always proud to be a Saints fan, the pub all clapped when I went mad after 5 minutes! Soo good to be in the Premiership where we belong!

Wigan away... Please play Punch on right... Get rid of J-Rod and three points for us!

Unlike Norge, I thought JRod had a decent match. He put himself about a lot and got into some decent positions. Punch and Ramirez had a bit of an off day.

If there is a worry, it is that we are not scoring as many as we should. 21 shots and only one goal suggests that we are not very efficient finishers.

I am judging him on the Adkins effect, I feel Nigel would definitely played Puncheon on the right... Agree?
Shaw should start?
J-Rod is terrible?
No Forren? (you won't like this if your Swedish!)

Great to have praise from the big man, fantastic for the lads but we should've (could've) got something from that.

Please tell me what difference MP made to the team that drew with Chelski?

So first marks are 3/10, he hasn't done anything special yet... But I hope he does! I am behind him!

Everyone can see the difference in tactics, not going forward but out of possession we are much more aggressive and if you actually studied it you would see the defensive line about 5 yards higher up the pitch making us much tighter.
As for resting someone I actually think Adkins might have rested even more players with wigan coming up Saturday.
Puncheon was playing on the right, it was switched halfway through he half.
J-Rod worked hard, not great put tracked back and chased well.
As for Forren, only someone out of his mind would hand a centre back a PL debut at Old Trafford. Did you see Maya at Arsenal? I'm sure he will be involved on Saturday.

Happy to admit if I am wrong guys, surely you have to agree J-Rods performances have been poor, yes he got the goal... But he cost us one too by giving away a stupid foul!
His header... Free header... Yeah, we paid £7M for that. I hope he can turn it around but I would rather have Guly on!
Even the Man U fan I had to sit with laughed at the man... He nearly fell off his chair when I told him what we paid!
BUT he is a Saint and I will support him, but its getting hard.

If there is a worry, it is that we are not scoring as many as we should. 21 shots and only one goal suggests that we are not very efficient finishers.
That's due to Puncheon playing on the RIGHT! Shame as he and Clyne are class

We reckon MoPo chose his team with one eye on Saturdays game with Wigan and got it just about right with a bit of luck and some bad marking from Saints for Rooney to score we would have thrashed them he now has 6 possibly 7 fresh players for this Saturdays game, his tactical nous in reading the game is also spot on we will not be overalled by any team this season !!!

According to Mark Lawrenson he cannot remember MU playing so badly. It really sticks in his throat to admit Saints played well and on balance of play should have had a least a point. Still that is the sign of true champions - not be allowed to play your natural game and still win.
One of these days the penny will drop with one of the so-called expert pundits

v Newcastle - Never seen them so poor
v QPR - They were very poor
v Arsenal - can't remember them playing so poorly
v Chelsea - really poor performance
v Stoke - poorest performance so far

It couldn't possibly be anything to do with us could it ? Oh No!
