Transfer Deadline Day - Live
Updated 10:14pm Thursday 31st January 2013 in Sport
By Dan Kerins, Digital Editor
This live event has finished
Latest
- No new additions for Saints on transfer deadline day
- Vegard Forren the sole January signing
- Jonathan Forte, Ben Reeves, Lee Barnard and Steve De Ridder leave on loan deals
- Relegation rivals QPR, Reading, Wigan and Villa all bring players in
10:13pm
As that is the end of play for Saints for the day we are going to wrap up this live blog.
No doubt there are still going to be some late deals elsewhere.
QPR have so far only signed one player but could finish the day with another four on their books.
It's been a quiet day for Saints in the end but then they never really needed that much.
Many thanks for your company throughout the day.
Now you can all get some sleep.
10:00pm
So it's official. That's it from Saints for the January window
10:00pm
Can confirm that Steve De Ridder to Bolton on loan for a month is our last piece of business for this window. #deadineday #SaintsFC

9:59pm
No official word yet but it sounds very much like the shutters are being pulled down at St Mary's.
Four loan departures and no arrivals on this deadline day.
9:49pm
Stoke have completed the £2.5million signing of United States winger Brek Shea from FC Dallas.
9:47pm
It's official.
Confirmation that Steve De Ridder has joined Championship side Bolton on a one month loan deal.
9:35pm
There are unconfirmed rumours that there may be one more bit of business at St Mary's before the window closes this evening.
That is expected to be a departure with Steve De Ridder reported to be the man on his way and Bolton Wanderers his likely destination.
9:31pm
Saints activity
Lee Barnard has joined League One side Oldham on loan until the end of the season.

The Odemwingie one is remarkable. The current story is this...
Confusion surrounded the future of West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie tonight as he arrived in London for talks with QPR, only for his club to deny giving him permission to do so.
Rangers boss Harry Redknapp earlier spoke of his interest in the wantaway Nigerian, and when the player was interviewed in London speaking of his excitement about a move, it looked as though a deal was on.
But West Brom reacted quickly by releasing a statement which read: "Albion have moved to clarify developments regarding Peter Odemwingie after the striker was filmed a short while ago arriving at Loftus Road.
"The club can confirm they have held further discussions with QPR today but those talks have so far proven fruitless and no agreement has been reached.
"Albion would also like to make clear that Peter has not been given permission to speak to QPR about a potential move."
Albion's words came just minutes after Sky Sports News interviewed the 31-year-old as he drove into London.
He has been critical of West Brom on Twitter over recent weeks but he tonight gave a nod to that being in the past, saying: "It's fine. West Brom was my home but this is a new chapter. I love West Brom and always will.
"I am optimistic. A few good players have arrived here (at QPR) and I am happy with the trust Harry Redknapp has in me.
"The last few results have given us a chance to stay up. I don't think the owners will bring in so many players if they don't think it will happen.
"I hope West Brom are happy with what they will get and they hope to get players themselves."
While Odemwingie was in front of the cameras, Redknapp was giving an interview to London Call-In, during which he confirmed his interest in Odemwingie, Jermaine Jenas and Andros Townsend.
"Peter Odemwingie has pace, great movement," Redknapp said. "I like him and is a player that has always given us problems when I was at Tottenham
"I think if we can get Odemwingie he would be a great signing for us, but whether we can pull it off I am not sure."
The acquisition of Jenas looks like being an easier one for Redknapp, with the Tottenham midfielder also turning up at Loftus Road ahead of what he expects to be an 18-month deal.
He told reporters: "That's initially. I am fit and ready to go, it's a top club and I am confident the manager can make sure the club stays up. I know Harry well, spent a lot of time with him at Tottenham and know him well enough.
"It's a top club, has some good players and not in that bad a position. They're four points off safety and can definitely claw that back."
Earlier in the day, Rangers broke their club transfer record when they signed Christopher Samba from Anzhi Makhachkala after triggering a release clause believed to be more than £10m.
9:24pm
It's all so quiet...
West Ham midfielder Alou Diarra has joined Ligue 1 side Rennes on loan for the rest of the season.
Tottenham have announced that goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has joined German side Hoffenheim on loan until the end of the season.
Confusion surrounded the future of West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie tonight as he arrived in London for talks with QPR, only for his club to deny giving him permission to do so.
Tottenham have given up their pursuit of Internacional striker Leandro Damiao - for now.
7:48pm
Harry Redknapp latest.
He's been speaking to a radio show and has spoken of his transfer deadline day hopes - which seem to be Peter Odemwingie, Jermaine Jenas and Andros Townsend. The deal for Peter Crouch is off with Stoke unwilling to let him leave.
"He's got pace, I really like him and I think he could help us," said Redknapp of Odemwingie.
"Whether we can get him, I'm not sure."
"Townsend has been unlucky because he's got both Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon in front of him. He's strong, quick, brave and he scores. I think both he and JJ would be good players for us."
7:36pm
Blimey. It is a quiet old day
7:09pm
Fulham have snuck one past the hacks that cover them with the loan signing of Stanislav Manolev.
6:58pm
Immediate action as Ben Reeves joins Southend United on a one month loan deal.
The 21-year-old has had a few first team opportunities under Nigel Adkins but struggled to really establish himself.
Southend are currently seventh in League Two, which is the final play-off place in that division.
They are, of course, managed by former Saints boss Paul Sturrock.
6:56pm
QPR boss Harry Redknapp talking about spending a shed load of cash, from his car window:
6:56pm
Right the King of Saints blogging is done for the day. It's time for Prince Charming to take over.
6:45pm
Right, with a little over four hours remaining, I'm going to hand over to Adam Leitch, who will have the pleasure (!) of documenting every single twist and turn and what is certain to be an action-packed evening of wheeling and dealing.
If not, I'm sure there will be a repeat of Friends somewhere on TV.
What transfer deadline day looks like at my end. Tears not shown. http://t.co/6vY2VyBU

Some also suggesting Matt Holland and Rudi Skacel. It's almost as if some people aren't taking this seriously.
6:27pm
Some of the rumours being bounced around by Saints fans online as potential signings:
- Jesus Navas
- Jermain Lens
- Davide Astori
Do you see any of them coming true?
6:24pm
Could the £8m for Italian international Davide Astori be resurrected? There was a lot of chatter about him in early January and he said last week that he'd like to play in a foreign league.
As things stand, Saints have Yoshida, Hooiveld and Martin as fully fit centre halves, with Fonte and Forren getting back to fitness.

Admittedly, that won't be the sort of deal Saints fans are hankering after, but at least it's something!
6:04pm
We have some action!
Jonathan Forte has joined Sheffield United on loan.
The striker didn't have the most fruitful time at St. Mary's, and will be best remembered for scoring a brace against MK Dons at St. Mary's after Saints had gone 2-0 down in League One.
6:03pm

It's 5pm, so that means only six hours of the wonderful adventure that is transfer deadline day remaining.
Truly, we are blessed.
4:57pm
Jim White is on the roof of Sky HQ "on this special day", making it sound like Christmas Day in an orphanage, rather than a day when millionaire footballers and their agents get big fat cheques.
The only reason for broadcasting from the roof seems to be the fact that you can just about make out the Wembley arch, which is about five miles away in the distance.

Don't forget, Pochettino did allude to the possibility of potential signings today, with his comments following last night's match.
If no-one else comes in, are you happy with the squad at his disposal?
4:39pm
Thus far, this has arguably been the quietest Transfer Deadline Day for sometime.
The 'highlights' include:
- Samba to QPR for £12m
- Becchio to Norwich
- Butland to Stoke for £4m
- Delap to Barnsley
- Beckham to PSG
- Danny Graham to Sunderland for £5m

4:17pm
Need something to help liven up Transfer Deadline Day? Try this:
4:06pm
Jack Butland has completed the move to Stoke - but he will most likely be loaned back to Birmingham for the rest of the season.
The deal is worth £4m - at least £2m less than Saints bid for the player in the summer.
You can only imagine Birmingham wish they had taken that offer when they had the chance.
4:03pm
Another deal for a club down the bottom - Aston Villa have completed the signing of 22-year-old Yacouba Sylla from Clermont Foot on a three-and-a-half year deal.
3:58pm
The players most likely to be pushed towards the exit at St. Mary's are Lee Barnard, Tadanari Lee and Jonathan Forte.
That's not to say they will or that others won't, but do you think jettisoning any of the above would be a mistake or the right thing to do?

3:23pm
As expected, Celtic have knocked back Norwich's fourth bid for Gary Hooper, who Saints bid for in the summer.
Remains to be seen if they return with a fifth offer.
3:11pm
It looks like football has broken the Internet - Twitter has collapsed, presumably under the weight of tweets expressing disgust about Rickie Lambert not being called up.
3:04pm
The Jack Butland deal offered by Stoke to Birmingham involves them loaning the young keeper back to the St. Andrew's for the rest of the season.
3:03pm
On Sky Sports News, David Garrido stays on, but Hayley McQueen has been replaced by Kirsty Gallagher.
The hype about a middle aged man preparing to do his job is already at fever pitch, such is the desire at Sky to get Jim White on screen.

Following from the disapointment for Danny Fox, neither is there any room in the England squad for Rickie Lambert.
The joint-top scoring English striker has been left out in favour of Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge.
2:06pm
Sunderland have now officially confirmed the signing of Danny Graham for £5m, from Swansea.
2:03pm

If MP/NC do not make a move to sign new players this transfer window and move "to the team to the next level", as NC stated, then WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF SACKING NA??? Makes no logical sense to me really. Still believe sacking NA was more an ego issue with NC rather than "perfect timing" to help the team.
Losing Courtinho to Liverpool was painful as he looked to be a good possession player. So if we offered 10.2M and missed out on him, then why not make a similar offer to another big name that could control the game?
I have read articles that Celtic's price demands for Hooper have reduced and they may lose him on a free this summer anyhow. Why not make another move for him now since we were already willing to pay 8M for him just a few months ago. Unfortunately I think JR was a waste of money this past summer. He just does not look up to par for the Premiership.
1:55pm
Another ex-Saint is potentially on the move. Championship strugglers Barnsley are after Rory Delap, who is still at the Britannia with the Saints Old Boys XI Stoke City.
1:44pm
According to Sky Sports, the total amount of cash spent by Premier League clubs in fees so far during this transfer window is £101m.

Sentiments being echoed by many Saints fans - a £12m deal with Samba on (rumoured) wages of £100k a week do seem reminiscent of the days of excess at Fratton Park.
Will it all end in tears for QPR or is it a gamble that will pay off?

Southampton Rejects United Stoke City's interest in Jack Butland is now taken the form of a £4m bid - presumably in case Manchester United's interest in Asimir Begovic leads to a deal.
Saints had a £6m bid for Butland rejected in the summer but the Blues are now in financial difficulty.
However, if Artur Boruc can continue the form he showed last night, do Saints really need to bring another 'keeper alongside the Pole, Kelvin Davis, and Paulo Gazzaniga?

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is a busy man ahead of Saints' visit on Saturday. Earlier he re-signed Paul Scharner, now he's put a £3m offer in for Barnsley right back John Stones.
Saints were also linked to Stones during this window, but with Nathaniel Clyne and Frazier Richardson - as well as Danny Butterfield and if needed, Jack Cork, already in the squad, right back is not a priority for Pochettini and company.

Kieron Dyer is close to signing for Boro'. If you cast your mind back to a world before transfer deadline days, Saints were vilified when Tahar El Kahlej inured Dyer prior to the 2002 World Cup.
Of course, Kieron Dyer was the greatest footballer in a generation and his inury was the reason England didn't become world champions that year. Or something.
Worryingly, Tahar is now 44 years old according Wikipedia.

Mind you, I guess you've heard that other rumour, you know, the footballer, two feet, one head, can run, tracks back, uses his feet in the tackle, knows where the goal is and could come on the cheap if the agent can talk him round.
Personally, I don't rate him. Any thoughts? :)

He probably pastes a bit of valcro to their backs when they sign. Somewhere, he's probably got a big book where he keeps all his signings and is desolate when he has to leave them all behind and start again elsewhere.
Still, Norge, look on the bright side, imagine how long your 'beating' list will be for QPR when we beat them at SMS - IF you add players to your fans list, that is.

He gets knocked off the ball like Heskey did! This happens because the England set up are not allowed to think creatively and will continue to reinforce failure year after year until new faces come in at the top level who actually want England to win and are prepared to make a decision, stick with it and drop the players who keep on failing at international level.

COME ON, YOU KNOW ITS TRUE ..
How many eunuchs do you know who play for Premier League teams ?
I know there are quite a few who seem to lack any spherical organs at all especially when they put on an England shirt. Clearly the "operation" stops them from passing the ball (?!!) forward and only enables a sideways pass or a desperate return pass to the goalkeeper who has just rolled it to them.
Mr Cortese has never answered any of my calls in this matter, which I have no problem with as he doesn't come across as a cat lover.
I think there's a massive scandal being concealed here about this and I expect the Echo to investigate with all of its internationally recognised journalistic muscle. or they could go to the BBC website and look it up.. whatever !!

Of course the club has said nothing, but that doesn't mean that nothing is happening, unless it is made explicitly clear that saying nothing means nothing is happening - otherwise it could be just a case of saying nothing when something is happening.
What they need to do is issue a statement such as: "We are not saying nothing because something is happening, but because nothing is happening and therefore there's nothing to say - although, of course, in saying this, we are actually saying something, but we're not saying something is happening apart from us saying that nothing is happening."

If nothing was on the cards at all then the club would say so rather than needlessly keeping fans guessing and on edge. So something must be happening.

Now that is a club in a mess getting messier!
I hope all the idiots who kept shouting for Arry are watching how much money he has spent. Not a lot wrong with the players that were already there. A good manager would make a team out of that lot, not tell them they were cr4p and lazy and overpaid.
MP has come in to our club and invigorated the team.
I look forward to the Wigan game.
A game we could win, that will be the test. Not games where anything is a bonus, a real chance of points against a team more desperate than us for points.

If there was why was he on the bench? Why did he play? If he'd had or had a stomach 'bug' (query norovirus) he should be no where near the rest of the squad for risk of infecting the rest of them. It'd be a huge boost if we could get Andres Iniesta's right leg on loan and put it on Puncheon. OK, maybe not in this window, but I'm convinced the dramatic advances in surgery will see clubs reducing costs in future by just buying the best bits of players and assembling all the good parts.

Confucious wrote:I would suggest that inter-racial body transplants may not be the way forward here. Theres no way even Messi's legs are gonna make Jay Rod a top player although perhaps Usain Bolts legs on Licki Rambert?
It'd be a huge boost if we could get Andres Iniesta's right leg on loan and put it on Puncheon. OK, maybe not in this window, but I'm convinced the dramatic advances in surgery will see clubs reducing costs in future by just buying the best bits of players and assembling all the good parts.
Messi's legs would be superb on Jay Rodriguez from a football point of view, even though they would look a bit small and stubby on his very long body.
I'm not a racist and I'm all for integration, but from an aesthetic point of view I'm not at all sure if a single black leg should be put on a white body or a single white leg on a black one - though two legs of any one colour would probably be okay.
Just a thought as well - whys everyone going on about MP not speaking English

It would be a better world.

Maybe MP wanted to see how Fox shaped up and he got a run out to see if he was keeping him or letting him go. Which may have made a difference to whether we got someone in or not.
We have played 8 of the top 10 teams away now.
The second half performance yesterday gives us hope. depends how soon the opposition learns how to counteract it.

I love the way it's clearly down to NC's inability to sign rather than perhaps a positive decision that the squad's good enough.
When Alex Ferguson is spouting about Saints for a half yesterday being the best team to have visited Old Trafford this year, do you think there is even the slightest possibility that we might have a decent squad? Might be worth working with them, training, improving the teamwork rather than just spending cash in the manner of old Saggy Chops. Just wondering. Perhaps you do know more than the professionals who run our club or even Fergie but I do rather doubt it.

Mayuka - Was he really signed for FOOTBALLING reasons or commercial ones. I'd rather we'd put the money into a midfield anchor man or defence.
To avoid this disappointment every year the club should in my view issue a statement stating whether they do or don't plan to strengthen.

if we do more business then so be it, however i think we have enough to stay up and that is all we need to do this season. i do worry that if srl gets injured we might struggle but then thats what jrod was brought for and we still have tad lee and mayuka. i dont think mp was brought in to get players in during this window.
the players who have gone out on loan are either surplus to requirements or youth players needing games.

So much for Cortese's ambition:
he appoints a manager who has achieved nothing to date in his coaching carreer; he brings in only one player in the window when we needed a further goalkeeper, centre-back, midfielder and striker. Is Potchettino the new Jan Poortvliet?

Can't believe Lee Barnard is still on our books.
To be fair to the idiots saying NC should have spent big, when have we ever spent close to £30M in one season? Incredible investment.
He's got Lee and Mayuka who haven't even got a game yet and anyone coming in (bar strengthening cover in defence maybe) would be taking the place of a Gazza, Shaw, J-Rod, Lallana, Puncheon, Clyne, Ward Prowse, Cork...
Well done NC for showing your confidence in the team and the coach.
Bar a bad injury crisis any club could go through, I think we have good quality throughout.

Saints will have to spend a lot more and improve this squad if they are to achieve Cortese's ambitions. Gambling on a positive but unproven manager and hoping that that will achieve top six football is just that - a gamble, just like when Lowelife appointed Poortvliet to put on the Ritz with our youth players!!
I hope I'm proved wrong, but there's too much talk and not enough walk with Cortese - the lack of spending in this window proves that. Actions not words are what count.

bringing mp in is not the same as jan poortvliet, at that point we were in the championship, had no money and were on the verge of admin and unlike other teams we were using our youth team players instead of stealing from charities to pay for expensive players that we couldnt afford! whereas now we have some of the best young players in the prem, young english players like shaw and clyne and lalla and cork etc, we also have exciting internationals like £12mill gaston. yes we could have spent lots of money but that might not have worked either, villa have done next to nothing as have reading, wigan and norwich. newcastle have brought half of france and qpr have done their normal business.

Leaving transfers to the last day is a ridiculous thing to do, the prices become inflated and normally players who are available is because they're not actually that good.

I think Cortese will make more transfers in the summer depending on what league we're in. At the moment our squad should be good enough to stay up, we've just got to start winning rather than drawing.
Baddesley Bill wrote:It's all relative - we are in the Prem and should stay up this season, but we're a long way off Cortese's dream. I'm not sure that the Academy is sole the answer. We need one or two really top flight additions.

Who was it above that said "Cortese lacks ambition" ? ........ nearly dropped my beer when I read that .......... I doubt that there's a more ambitious chairman in the whole football league !
Football is governed by cash...yes...but we are trying to do it a different way. Employ from within...create our own talent...QPR's short term tactics will fail...just watch and see!
At least the Skates are heading where they belong which is non-league football. I can't really complain.

Southampton have spent near on £35 million this season. Nicola Cortese rescued the club from the brink by introducing us to Markus liebherr.
Some moron above said why can't saints break the world transfer record? Are you living on planet earth?
Not many clubs have spent big this transfer window, as prices are over the top. QPR have bought in a few players who will earn good money, but to be honest, they are not worth it in my opinion.
Saints have a good squad, the fact that we spent another 4 million on a defender is testament to where we are as a club.
Most clubs have spent wisely except Harry and his free spending antics, which could backfire big time for them.
We have a manager who seems tactically aware and confident of improving players by working with them.
For the fans expecting more money spent remember we have invested more than 30 million on players this season. Plus the academy. Now remember back to what it was like when we suffered relegation and administration from the championship before our new regime. I think some people forget easily how far we have come. Ungrateful plastic fans need to remember!!
If you want glory and a club who spends millions upon millions then go and support man city. Oh hold on, they never signed anyone today either!!
I am fed up with some of the ungrateful plastic fans who forget where this club has come from over the last 4 years,
That's all.

That's it then try and stay up on the cheap again. Proves Adkins wasn't a yes man.
So, you didn't really answer my point, which was about your use of the "It's not his team" attack, which you used against NA. You're now using his name to make the very same argument against MP. Keep up the good work!

So much for Cortese's ambition:

To the moaners above, what a pile of tripe you spout! Those unhappy with things and saying that we should have spent millions more - like some clubs - should pop down the M27 and take a look at how things are going these days in Goldsmith Avenue.
The first important thing is to strengthen, which, with Veg, is almost certainly the case. The second important thing is to ensure that there is minimal disruption to what's already moving forward (my main concern with changing managers). If bringing in 5 players with a common (foreign) language (NUFC) or telling the press the players you currently have are not good enough and so trying to buy in an entire new team (QPR) isn't disruptive, I don't know what is.
I'd have loved one more (world class) signing but I'm really chuffed to have a team that can run rings round the champions elect and to have money in the bank ready for when we have the chance to get the right next player in at the RIGHT price.

MGRA wrote:Your post is a bit confusing, you don't need a pardon, as I don't think you have done anything illegal. As far as the 'loan outs' are concerned are you for the moves, or against them? How does the payment of wages work out, is it always the Club that takes the player on that pay their wages? Isn't it good to get some of these players out, to get them some playing time, or alternatively putting them into the shop window if we no longer think they will be part of the future? It is far too early to judge whether MoPo is ambitious or not, whatever, we have to go with what we have got to see the Season out, personally I think we are a bit on the weak side, squad wise, but hopefully Fonte and Guly will be back soon which will help. Knock Harry if you like, but if he gets QPR out of the mire by what he has done, some people will have to eat their words, hopefully it won't come to that or even matter. Our prime objective is 17th or better, we move on from there.

Yesterday I went on some Man U threads to see what they were saying about us after the game. Couldnt believe they were actually moaning about the way they have been playing this season. It would seem being 7 points clear and pretty much nailed on to win the premiership is just not enough these days!??
Whatever a club achieve it seems that some fans' expectations will constantly outpace reality.
