SAINTS’ only January transfer window signing Vegard Forren will continue to wait for his Premier League debut.

The £3.5m capture from Norway has yet to make the bench for Saints since arriving, and is unlikely to be included at Wigan Athletic this afternoon either.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino has revealed Forren is still serving what he calls “an adaptation” process at St Mary’s.

With the Norwegian League season running at different times to the English one, Forren’s last league game for Molde was way back on November 18.

His last competitive match was on December 8, a Europa League game against Stuttgart.

That was just two days before Adam Lallana picked up his injury against Reading, though, and the skipper was back at Old Trafford in midweek.

Forren joined Saints last month after coming off his post-season holidays.

As such, he needs not only to bed into a new dressing room and footballing culture but also get up to speed fitness wise.

Effectively, he is having his own mini pre-season so he can take the pace of the Premier League.

Pochettino hasn’t set a timescale on whether Forren will be considered ready to play in a day, a week or a month.

But he did confirm: “Forren is still going through an adaptation period and an integration period.

“He basically arrived at the team after being away on holidays so he needs to go through that process in order to be able to play.

“Nonetheless, later on he will have to earn his place because there are other players who are playing very well so he will have to earn his spot.”

Pochettino this afternoon leads his team to face Wigan in a crunch relegation six-pointer at the DW Stadium.

He is keen to take the pressure off of the result, though.

“All games have their complexity, all games have their difficulty,” he said when asked about its importance.

“But in any game where you have the chance of getting the three points we have to go in with that mentality and go for the win.”

Saints at least go into the match at the DW Stadium on the back of an encouraging performance at Manchester United, even if they did lose 2-1 on Wednesday.

“We have seen that Manchester United playing at home is a team that plays very good football and we felt that we had a chance to press up there to destroy their creativity,” explained Pochettino.

“Especially cancelling out the channels that would lead to passes into Rooney, Welbeck or Van Persie.

“We controlled them well but we just weren’t able to win the game or get a draw.

“But I’m proud of how the team played in the second half and how we dominated during many periods of the game.”

Why did we buy Vegard Forren if he,s not fit to play? Surely we should have bought another centre half who could go straight into the team.
When all the other teams at the bottom of the premier league have brought in new players why havnt we?
Have we no money?
With the Tv money going up so much next season surely we cant afford to go down.

I think this is a valid good point. I'd said some time ago there was no money but I was proved wrong by Forren's signing. I do have to wonder just how much money there is though. One would have thought that we would have had high impact signings who would have come straight into the team. I'm putting my faith however in NC and MP accepting that they both know what they are doing. This afternoon will tell. I'm being positive and hopeful and predict a 4 1 win to Southampton!!!!!

I think Forren is one for the future, Hooiveld and Yoshida are playing well, there's no reason to disrupt that by playing someone different.

All the other teams have bought players, but have they REALLY strengthened their sides? We are by far good enough to stay up with the team we have and could realistically finish in the 2nd 3rd of the table based on the results we're capable of getting, and in my opinion the change in management has strengthened the team more than any player could have.

We're the 3rd richest club in England, i think in the top 15 richest in Europe, we have money, but just cause we have it isn't a reason to blow it on players who won't improve the team

I'd prefer us to buy the right player rather than worrying about if he was fit for the first handful of games after he'd joined.

Perhaps people in the management team have a longer timescale in mind than you and aren't prone to panic.

Hooiveld has stepped up his game since the twitchy start to the season. He and Yoshi are looking OK.

And I am OK with MP making sure that new players are "Saints fit". It is reassuring that he seems to be keeping much of what was good about the Adkins period rather than feeling that it is important to change things by default in order to make his stamp. That shows self confidence.

The manager is correct in doing this, he will obviously be our number 1 center back. Its just a waiting process he needs time to adapt and get match fit. The back two aren't playing bad at the moment so why rush him in?. I think it's a good idea and shouldn't be too long until hes playing, could be today.

Check the figures, think you'll find that we are the 3rd richest club in England.

Don't be getting upset about us spending enough money to save your club on a player who's not even been on the bench.

We've lost 4 PREMIER LEAGUE games since October, your little 'team' hasn't won a LEAGUE ONE game since then. Let's not talk about relegation, shall we?

By the way, you should probably sort your spelling and grammar out before you next sign on, screwing the tax payer is your kinda thing down there, isn't it? Even the football club is joining in.

He is being integrated in the squad, and will have to earn his place in the team based on how is preforms in training. Think a bit further than your nose! How do you know it's a poor decision?

On what FACTS have you based that? On his GPS data from the training week he had in Barcelona? On the fitness tests he's had while he's been here? On the way you've watched him fitting in with the rest of the team? Please tell us exactly what makes it a poor decision?

I have no doubt at all that if he played and was slow or didn't respond as a member of the team you'd be on here WHINING about his being played too soon.

Then again, that appears to be your aim in life; to be unhappy.

Whatever time we had bought him we'd have had a problem. If we'd bought him in the summer, then he'd have already played a lot of games and could be burnt out by the start of the season. It might have been that there was noone good enough available that would suit our style or was cost effective. If you look at the teams around us buying, they've mostly bought rubbish.
Norwich - lee camp and becchio.
West Ham - unknown brazilian
Aston Villa - french 2nd division player.
Reding - An unfit CB and a striker from Sheff Utd

I think we've got a good enough squad already that can stay up, then invest in the summer.

If we'd bought him in the summer, then he'd have already played a lot of games and could be burnt out by the start of the season. He was bought to play. But needs to reach the fitness level required to play in the PL. Maybe no one else was available, that the scouts thought would fit into the team. Always trust that NC and MP will know more about creating a good team than YOU will...

PS: Don't hit the panic button. Just get behind the team, whoever is in the starting XI...

Moron! Did you not read the story? It basically says that he's training hard to get fit to play, as his season ended a while back. He is being integrated in the squad, and will have to earn his place in the team based on how is preforms in training. Think a bit further than your nose! The manager has a long term plan, and will ALWAYS know more about how the team should be than any wannabe manager...
Excuse me!!! No need for personal insults. Why buy him if he's not good enough to come straight into the team. £3.5 million is a lot of money.

Yes, you have the right to moan but we also have the right to point out that it's all you do.

Why should players go straight into the team? Would you not want him to learn how we play? Learn instructions and signals? Get fit enough to play? Get used to playing with our other defenders?

Even if he was fully fit, would he get in the team over Hooiveld and Yoshida? Who are both playing well. Would you disrupt a comfortable defence just for the sake of putting a player, who may or may not be technically better in? Just because we've bought a player doesn't mean we should play him straight away.

I know Thomas, it is frustrating, but it's no good asking us, we can't give you an authoritive reply, we can speculate, may be he was carrying a knock, may be he is still getting used to being here, may be the new Gaffer hasn't been convinced that he is ready yet, might even be a paper work snag, we just don't know and we will just have to be patient.

Moan moan moan. Why are you not manager if you know who should play?
As a season ticket holder I earn the right to moan about a poor decision.

Yes, you have the right to moan but we also have the right to point out that it's all you do.
Thomas you're not allowed an opinion mate in some people's minds. You're entitled to your view and should be allowed to express it. You may be right you may be wrong. This applies to every post placed on here. Don't let certain people on here put you off. Some people are highly opinionated and if your opinion doesn't Agee with theirs they'll subject you to gratutuious abuse. My advice mate is to ignore it. Replying simply fuels their game and their empty lives!
Oh Gawd, Saintlysoul. Of course he has a right to say what he wants - I said that in the post. However, I also asked him what FACTS it was based upon.

And guess what, no response. Nothing.

That's his style. Whine about something, then, when asked to justify it, ignore and claim he's being attacked.

That's fine with me but he can't expect not to be called up on it.

You're just annoyed because I was the one who noticed that you have two sign ons.

yes upton is allowed to an opinion and is allowed to post it on here but can you point out any "gratutuious abuse" from either saintysaintsaint or Velleity? i cant see any. all they are doing is pointing out to upton that all he ever does is moan, and it does seem to be that he loves a moan, nothing wrong with that though. however to claim that it is a joke that VF cant even make the bench and that he should because he cost £3.5mill (which is not a lot of money in the prem) without knowledge of the players fitness or matchfitness or his knowledge of the team and positional play is taking things too far. the 1 person who has all the data on all the players is MP. if upton had said "why isnt VF even on the bench, i would have put him there he has cost the club a bit of money and i would like to see him take part in a match" would have been better no? however its not my job to put words into his mouth and as you have said he can post what he likes, but if you post in a certain `negative` way you will get people sicking up for the club they support!
Replying simply fuels their game and their empty lives. ? that doesnt help either does it you have no idea about other peoples lives on here and what `game` are they playing? if you think supporting your club and defending it against people who post obvious anti saints and MP statements is a game then you are wrong.

Moan moan moan. Why are you not manager if you know who should play?
As a season ticket holder I earn the right to moan about a poor decision.

Not based on any facts and doesn't need to be. I can't believe Saints buy a player who obviously isn't good enough to join the team and pay £3.5 million
