  • Rickie Lambert and Morgan Schneiderlin had scored second-half goals for Saints

That result keeps Saints in 16th, three points clear of the drop zone. Elsewhere at the bottom, Reading beat Sunderland 2-1, Aston Villa drew 3-3 at Everton, and Newcastle shocked Chelsea 3-2. Earlier, QPR drew 0-0 at home against Norwich. We will have reaction on the website for you later. Thanks for joining us.

4:52pm

WIGAN 2 SAINTS 2

4:52pm

Wigan 2 Saints 2 (Shaun Maloney 90): A corner is headed towards goal by Paul Scharner, with the ball dropping kindly to the unmarked Maloney, who steers home from close range.

4:46pm

Wigan 1 Saints 2 (Morgan Schneiderlin 85): Jay Rodriguez races down the left, as Saints break away. His low ball into the centre picks out Schneiderlin, who made a lung-bursting run from deep, and the Frenchman slots home in front of the delirious Saints fans.

4:42pm

SAINTS SUBSTITUTION (81): Jason Puncheon off, James Ward-Prowse on.

4:34pm

CHANCE (71): A loose ball drops to Adam Lallana in the box, but his left-foot snap shot cannons back off the post and away to safety for Wigan.

4:25pm

Wigan 1 Saints 1 (Rickie Lambert 64): Jack Cork's cross from the right is flicked on by Jay Rodriguez. Rickie Lambert then nods the ball past Ali Al Habsi at close range to equalise.

4:22pm

SAINTS SUBSTITUTION (60): Nathaniel Clyne off, Adam Lallana on.

4:17pm

WIGAN SUBSTITUTION (56): Ronnie Stam off, Jordi Gomez on.

4:13pm

Jack Cork into the book after a mistimed challenge on Roger Espinoza in midfield.

4:04pm

SAINTS SUBSTITUTION: A change before the second half begins, as Steven Davis replaces Gaston Ramirez.

3:48pm

WIGAN 1 SAINTS 0

3:41pm

CHANCE (38): Saints go extremely close to an equaliser. Morgan Schneiderlin's corner is met by the head of Jos Hooiveld, with the ball spinning towards the far corner, shaving the post and going behind for a goal kick.

3:35pm

Jay Rodriguez goes in very strongly on Jean Beausejour right in front of the dugouts, and is booked.

3:28pm

Wigan 1 Saints 0 (Gary Caldwell 25): Caldwell loses Maya Yoshida and plants a brilliant header past Artur Boruc from Jean Beausejour's corner.

3:19pm

CHANCE (16): Gaston Ramirez misses a wonderful opportunity. Rickie Lambert's ball from deep picks out his run into the area. No Wigan defenders track him, leaving him completely alone, ten yards out from goal. But, as the ball drops to him, his side-foot volley balloons way over the bar.

3:16pm

CHANCE (13): Stunning save from Artur Boruc. Beausejour whips in a ball from the left, which Di Santo slides in to meet. He diverts it towards the far corner with his outstretched foot, but Boruc flies to his left to tip it away.

3:10pm

PENALTY APPEAL (7): Paul Scharner claims he is held by Jos Hooiveld as he attempts to get on the end of a Shaun Maloney corner. Nothing is given, though.

3:01pm

Referee Andre Marriner gets the match underway.

2:58pm

The teams are out here at the DW Stadium. Kick-off just a few moments away. Saints in their red kit this afternoon. We will have updates here for you throughout the match.

2:37pm

Bottom club QPR have missed a great opportunity to significantly close the gap on the rest of the relegation battlers. Adel Taarabt's saved second-half penalty means they gain just a point against Norwich, after a 0-0 draw at Loftus Road.

2:34pm

Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino hopes his side can carry their second half performance against Manchester United on Wednesday into this afternoon's fixture:

That is the way we want to play but perhaps in the first half (at Old Trafford) we weren't able to do so. I am not happy with the way we played in the first half. That is not how we wanted to play. But I am very proud and happy with the way we played in the second. Our performance in the second half is going to give my players the confidence to play on like that in the future. All games have their complexity and difficulty. But in any game, where you have a chance of getting the three points you must keep that mentality and go for the win.

Mauricio Pochettino

2:29pm

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has been speaking about new Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino this week. Here's what he had to say:

You need to remember with the new manager that he is not involved in (the decision of) changing managers - he is just coming in to do his job. He was very impressive at Espanyol. He is well-organised, he has very clear football concepts and he is used to dealing with high-pressure games and with bringing youngsters through. What he did at Espanyol was remarkable and with the way Southampton have been playing in the last two games you can see he has a relationship straight away with his team and that they reflect the way he wants to play. I think Nigel Adkins did an incredible job and I'm sure everyone who is connected to Southampton will always appreciate that. He achieved two promotions and steadied the group in the new league, so that was a phenomenal job from the outside. We can see with the two performances under the new manager what normally happens - it gives a new start for different players in the squad and the squad gets galvanised. But it is also fair to say that after their first few games this season, Southampton showed they were ready and used to the new league. They have been very, very impressive, so we expect a very difficult game.

Roberto Martinez

2:25pm

Just one change for Saints from the side that lost 2-1 at Old Trafford on Wednesday, with Luke Shaw coming back in for Danny Fox. Adam Lallana remains among the subs.

2:18pm

THE LINE-UPS

SAINTS: Boruc; Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Shaw; Schneiderlin, Cork; Puncheon, Ramírez, Rodriguez; Lambert.

Subs: K Davis, Fox, Richardson, S Davis, Ward-Prowse, Lallana, Lee.

WIGAN: Al Habsi; Stam, Scharner, Caldwell, Figueroa, Beausejour; Espinoza, McCarthy, McArthur; Maloney, Di Santo.

Subs: Robles, Jones, Henriquez, Gomez, McManaman, Golobart, Campabadal.

1:42pm

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez spoke to the media this week. Here's a clip of what he had to say ahead of the match...

1:40pm

SAINTS SQUAD NEWS: Adam Lallana returned from a knee injury to play the second half of Wednesday's 2-1 defeat at Manchester United, and could start for the first time in eight weeks. Luke Shaw could also return at left-back in place of Danny Fox, after illness resulted in him being dropped to the substitutes' bench at Old Trafford.

1:39pm

WIGAN SQUAD NEWS: Paul Scharner could make his Wigan comeback after rejoining the Latics on transfer deadline day. Scharner, who spent four-and-a-half years with Wigan before leaving in 2010, has been recruited by manager Roberto Martinez on loan from Hamburg until the end of the season as an additional option in central defence, where Ivan Ramis (knee) and Antolin Alcaraz (groin) are currently unavailable. Also not fit for selection is another defender, Adrian Lopez (hamstring), along with goalkeeper Mike Pollitt (thigh) and midfielders Ben Watson (broken leg), Albert Crusat (knee), Ryo Miyaichi (ankle) and Fraser Fyvie (soft tissue problem). Forward Arouna Kone is away on African Nations Cup duty and full-back Emmerson Boyce (hamstring) is a doubt.

1:37pm

1:31pm

Good afternoon and welcome to the Daily Echo’s blog covering this afternoon’s Premier League contest between Wigan and Saints, at the DW Stadium. This is a historical afternoon. Not one they’ll be teaching kids about in school in years to come, but historical nonetheless: It’s Southampton’s first ever trip to the home of the Latics. Plenty of Saints fans are making their way up the M6 for this one – the lure of the DW never fails to draw in the punters! – so there should be some impressive backing for the visitors. Mauricio Pochettino’s side start the day three points clear of today’s opponents, but with a far superior goal difference, meaning they are unlikely to be overtaken. There’s plenty of interest towards the bottom of the table elsewhere too, with QPR currently taking on Norwich at Loftus Road, Reading hosting Sunderland and Aston Villa visiting Everton. We’ll have the build-up, team news and match updates for you here as the day progresses.

Come on S.Soul, come clean, what IS your interest in or relationship with JWP? You hardly ever post without telling us about your affection for him.

I'd agree with the 4-1, though. A goalfest has been coming and looking at Wigan's injury list, this could just be the day.

Just watched Wigan run Stoke ragged, at least in the second half of their game last week. This wont be easy they look very strong going forward. Should be a good game though. We can win this but only if we come near to playing like we did against Man U, and for ninety minutes.

Strasbourg I've been involved in football including youth football for many years. I saw JWP when he played league football at the age of 6. This boy had something about him. He was totally different from the other 19 out players. He showed a tremendous understanding and 'football brain' even at tha t age. It was obvious to me he had a future in the game. Over the years through my involvement in youth football I have seen this young man progress to the great player he is today.

He has had tremendous comments from the likes of Stuart Pearce, Roy Hodgson, Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp, & Niall Quinn.

I genuine believe that had he been played more this season by Adkins like his contemporary Luke Shaw (another fantastic talent) he, like Luke would be with the under 21 England squad rather than the under 19s. I'm frustrated that he appears to be being held back. Hopefully today he can get back into the team and progress under MP.

I would wager that in time JWP will captain not only Southampton motion but England.

That's it Strasbourg. Nothing else. It's rare you see such talent and when it comes along you have to appreciate and enjoy it!!!!

J-Rod little better than usual.
Agree with this. Normally I'm a fan of Yoshi, but he just doesn't look like he's with it today, making some simple mistakes.
I think Lallana coming on can give us that something extra, who do you take off though?

Was wondering the same, Norgie. Very frustrating half. We're so much better until the box, but, to be honest, the better chances have been carved out by Wigan on the break.

Like the half time song, 'Let's hang on to what we've got' Stringing 6 across the back from kick off suggests that's the height of their ambitions.

Davis will be fine.. Gaston had to go needs to understand some honest fans dissatisfaction and pull his finger out or face the music.. very poor so far and not deserving of many more chances.

Adam needs to come in on the left wing Punch just hasn't done enough there. Jay is doing well on the right wing at the mo.. give him a bit longer.

Agree, when we were 1-0 down, even though we had all the possession and were dominating, we just didn't look like scoring. we have played one game less at home than Reading, QPR, Wigan, West Ham, Newcastle at home and we just have to make it count at home. At one point we had played about 3 more away from home than home and now we have played more away than home.
We only have 3 of the top 13 away to play only 3 of the top eight at home.
Thought Rodriguez played well and is getting better with each game. Davies did well when he came on. Just hope this Forren is good we need him.

not happy it was always a very big risk sacking adkins that far into the season. another massive error was not signing another defender in the window, and now it appears we have signed a defender for 4m who clearly isnt fit. some one some where in the club needs to go on a decision making course cause at the moment their not great

We have not been playing this well all season. Think the play last 3 matches is very encouraging.we will easily stay up with this work rate. Possession and shots advantage pay off over time and we will benefit soon enough.

Yes, I have some sympathy with your post Mark!

However, remember two of the previous three games were away to Chelsea and MU! Next we've got Man City - don't expect too much there either! I think we should have sewn it up against Wigan, but let's not be too hasty to judge MP yet. He's had a baptism of fire with the opposing teams so far!

Yes, keep the faith, but everyone around us is now upping their game and we can't afford any more slip-ups like today.
agree wholeheartedly my friend if mopo dont sort his goalscoring and more importantly that ramshackles of a defence then we could well be in the mire
agreed... with no fresh options appearing in the window, we have to use what we have and that won't be good enough on MP current form...BUT if you look at our run-in then its clear what he has to achieve. Can He do it ? not sure, could Nigel have ? YES in my opinion. Lets hope NC does not regret what would be seek as simple sabotage of our Premier League status.... 2-from-9 has to change soon because you have to look at who is likely to drop. Its QPR and 2 from 4 others...

Shaw needs to put his hand up for the second, too. Everyone came out, but he stayed put and played the guy onside.

Still a free header before that, though, but couldn't see who was beaten to the ball.
It was Hoover that was beaten. Shaw should not come out unless we clear, he had the post and should have stayed there, now he got somewhere in between.

not happy it was always a very big risk sacking adkins that far into the season. another massive error was not signing another defender in the window, and now it appears we have signed a defender for 4m who clearly isnt fit. some one some where in the club needs to go on a decision making course cause at the moment their not great

I expect Clynes absense was also significant, easy to lay the blame but we can't change it this week, lets hope they address the problem ready for next weeks game, defending properly is going to be critical.

Agree, when we were 1-0 down, even though we had all the possession and were dominating, we just didn't look like scoring. It was important not to lose today though and we've maintained our 3 point gap over the bottom three, and still have a superior goal difference which could be vital come the end of the season.
If we "didn't look like scoring" how come we did?

I thought we looked so much like scoring that I put my money on it. I backed us to win when we were 1-0 down. I was watching the same game and it looked impossible for us NOT to score.
Amazing how the doom mongers have creeped back out. A very creditable draw against Everton off the back of a bad week, a game at old Trafford we were never expected to win but played better than any other club there, then did what we should away to Wigan only for an error at a corner to cost us the game.

Disappointed at dropping 2 points, did not make the most of our chances and
gave away 2 soft goals.However on a
positive note the team do seem to be playing with more overall confidence.
MP must be given time to impose
his style of play and from what we have seen so far I think we can stay up.
Forren will soon be in the team and
Fonte back to fitness in the not too distant future.
I have been very frustated at times this season but do believe we are now turning the corner.Just take those chances that we are now creating and
improve our defense, which I am sure
Mopo will sort out, and we should
start to win some games.

My man of the match...
Spider, for fantastic effort and a goal 9/10
Others...
Lambert ran his socks off. 8
Boruc looking better with each game. 7
Maya... His worse game in weeks. 5
Clyne injured? 7
Hoover was ok. 7
Shaw was great. 8
Puncheon maybe needed a poo? 7
Cork hard work again. 8
J-Rod a vast improvement. 8
Gaston, really £12M?! 6
JWP looked good. 7
Lallana two bad misses but class. 7
Davis solid. 7

We just have to start winning games with this great play.

Had we held on and won, as we should have and as we deserved, the moaners above would be lost this evening. The margins are small and we're not there yet, but, add 2 or 3 great players in the summer and get a fair rub of the green, and this team really does have the makings of a top 7 side.

They went from playing a slow possession game under NA to getting the ball in the danger zone quicker under Poch. Give the lads time to adapt.

Real fight from the team and to my mind we're too good to go down.

Don't agree - he should have left the post quicker and followed the rest of the defence out, leaving Malloney well offside.

Only we can shoot ourselves in the foot time after time.24 points dropped from winning positions this season already!

Partiularly disappointing after Mr Adkins had finally appeared to have got this aspect of our game under control only to be then sacked!

The new mans record does not look too encouraging either with only two points from a possible nine gathered to date.

A very quick improvement is now required to justify all of the hype or a certain chairman is going to have a lot of egg on his face come seasons end!
not happy it was always a very big risk sacking adkins that far into the season. another massive error was not signing another defender in the window, and now it appears we have signed a defender for 4m who clearly isnt fit. some one some where in the club needs to go on a decision making course cause at the moment their not great
Not match fit - Norway has a winter break - he hasn't played since December

Quite F Fan that seemed exactly the problem to me. Given his contribution you can forgive the naive mistake but he does need to learn from it.

Good team effort and Hoover played well IMO. J-Rod gets best improver though for good commitment and effort.

Good team effort naive defending and shows we have missed Fonte last couple of games. Our attack has had 35 attempts at goal in the last two games and sadly only produced 3 goals.
Yet being realistic Everton was going to be tough, Man Utd impossible but we frightened the knickers off them.
Wigan well at half time we would all of taken a draw.
Put things in perspective Everton have only lost 3 of their last 33 league games.
Man Utd have won every game at home except against spurs. They are the highest goal scorers.
Basically start of the season Wigan ran all over us at our place.
We need to turn dominance into results.
It is worrying that we control games and then give them away by poor finishing and defensive error.
But in truth the way we are pressing the game is good. I think and only an opinion Fonte has been the difference the last 2 games. He shouts and gets things organised at the back, I don't think Rooney would have been allowed to sneak in behind the defence as he did hoov for the second Utd goal and maybe the mix up in the first would of been avoided. In fairness if Fonte had played yesterday I suspect we would of won. But it is just that maybes

We have two poor centre halfs, and we need a clinical finisher up front to support Ricki Lambert,I am sure in the coming weeks this will be sorted.

I think MP should have made a tactical sub after our second goal, just to breakup play a little,m and waste a few seconds. Saints don't seem to have a tactical game, lasts why we keep giving our lead away so much, we need to learn how to kill the game when we're ahead with mins left on the clock.
